This document discusses the railway reservation system project undertaken by students. It includes an introduction to the Indian railway system and IRCTC portal. It outlines the problem statement of simulating the basic concepts of online reservation. It provides UML diagrams including use case, state, sequence, and activity diagrams to model the system. It also describes the entity relationship diagram and class diagram. Finally, it discusses how to book tickets online through the IRCTC website and by visiting the railway station booking counter.

INTRODUCTION
We havetaken railway reservation system as a topic
of project in research methodology , Indian Railway is
one of the biggest railway network in the world. And
also its reservation portal maintained by IRCTC is very
popular.
With some recent changes they have made it very
easier to use and book tickets online.
Users can register themselves on the portal and can
make booking , query train status , query booking
status, etc.
We have taken IRCTC as reference to design our study
and have taken library to use our notations and ideas

PROBLEM STATEMENT
“Railway ReservationSystem” is an attempt to simulate the basic
concepts of the online reservation system. The system enables to
perform the following functions:-
Search for train
Booking of a selected flight
Payment
Cancellation
Passenger Revenue enhancement
Improved and optimize service

HOW TO BOOKA RAILWAY
TICKET ONLINE
By India Today Web Desk: Except for General class train tickets, Indian
Railways requires reservations or booking on all classes of travel. Reservation
or booking allows the travelers to find a confirmed berth in the selected class
of a train. There are two main ways in which you can make a booking or
reservation. A passenger can make online advance reservations through the
IRCTC portal, which is also called as the e-ticketing of Indian Railways. Other
than that, a passenger can make a booking physically through the Indian
Railways booking counter at the railway station.
14.
CONT…..
A passenger canmake an advance reservation for up to 120 days in
advance, excluding the date of the journey at the train originating
station, according to IRCTC's website - irctc.co.in
Once a ticket is booked, a Unique PNR (Passenger Name Record) is
generated against every ticket.
15.
ADVANTAGES
The onlinereservation system is a very good
feature, because standing in Queues all the
time and jostling away wasting your time is
not the best thing to do, so the IRCTC website
does help a great deal to book your tickets.
Railways is a central government department
that offers numerous opportunities to both
travellers and employees.
The reservation system was provided by Indian
Railways on various trains to various locations.
16.
CONT…..
You canget the seat of your choice and book
the ticket before anyone else by reserving our
ticket.
Reservations are especially useful during festival
seasons, when it is extremely crowded and we
are unable to take a ticket.
The reservation is very helpful for the elderly,
and they can get food in the compartment
itself.
The reservation system saves you from having
to stand in line to get your ticket.
17.
DISADVANTAGES
Under theearlier arrangement, IRCTC used
to shut down its main server for one hour
every day – from 23.30 hours to 00.30 hours
— for its repair.
During this one hour, e-ticketing service was
fully closed. With the introduction of the
new system on September 20, IRCTC's main
server will be closed for 45 minutes only—
from 2345 hours to 0030 hours.
With this development, the passengers can
now avail e-ticketing facility for an extra 15
minutes.

HOW TO BOOKRAILWAY TICKET BY
GOING TO THE STATION
Passengers who book tickets from the ticket counter of Indian railway
station get more privilege. You can opt for various quotas and
concessions. Generally, these options are not available for online train
ticket booking.
Passengers booking tickets from the ticket counter can opt for the Senior
Citizens, Ladies quota and other related concessions.
Here are the steps you need to follow to get a train ticket from the Indian
Railways booking counter:
19.
CONT…..
For bookinga train ticket through Indian Railways booking counter, you
have to visit the nearest railway station and ask for the reservation form.
Fill the passenger details (Like: Name/s, age, gender, berth preference).
Once you are with done with form return it to the booking counter with
payment.
And you will get your tickets with the unique PNR number!
In case you stay from the railway station you can go to the online booking.
It is a most simple and easiest way of booking ticket.
20.
Recently, IRCTC,a 'mini Ratna' PSU of Indian
Railways, had imported five new HP Itanium
servers from Singapore to speed up e-ticketing
operations on its digital platform. Earlier on June
1, it had installed two Linux-enabled servers,
substantially raising the booking capacity of e-
tickets.
"The introduction of these new high-speed
servers has substantially enhanced the website
performance, including log-in time and payment
gateway. That is why passengers are getting 15
more minutes for e-ticketing service," said Dr A K
Manocha, chairman and managing director,
IRCTC.
