Work-based learning (WBL) has several key characteristics: 1) Learners are employees of a company; 2) Learning projects are based on workplace needs and learner interests; 3) Learning builds on existing skills and identifies new goals. WBL allows learners to gain skills for their current job, new knowledge beyond job requirements, and ability to handle unfamiliar situations. When involved in WBL, learners develop in a knowledge-based work environment where learning and work overlap but are not the same. WBL is important because workplaces are increasingly sites for applying academic knowledge to professional practice.
