combating a variety of issues present in slums through its grassroots foundation and
focus on female empowerment. SHOFCO originated in the Kibera slum of Nairobi,

Kiberais the largest urban slumin Kenya, and one of the largest in the entire world. Its
residents live in extreme povertywithout access to basic needs, and diseases such as

Once World War II began, America was in desperate need of workers, so this gave
women a food chance to find high paying jobs. For example, about 350,000 women
were able to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II. There was an
increase of job offers for women ranging from service pilots, military doctors,
politicians, factory workers, and participation in the Armed Forces (Yellin 112,
299). Between 1940 and 1945, the female percentage of the U.S. workforce
increased from 27 percent to nearly 37 percent, and by 1945 nearly one out of every
four married women worked outside the home ( History 1). If there is one person to
thank for the new job opportunities, it is none other than the famous Rosie the
Riveter. This well known fictional woman served not only to promote the changes of
fashion during the war, but was also used as a tool for recruiting women to work,
especially in the Armed Forces, and it was a success. In movies, newspapers,
posters, photographs, articles, and even a Norman Rockwell pained Saturday
Evening Post cover, the Rosie the Riveter campaign stressed the patriotic need for
women to enter the work force and they did, in huge numbers ( History 1). Women

In India, the Jan Lokpal Bill (Hindi: а¤ња¤Ё а¤ІаҐ‹а¤•а¤Єа¤ѕа¤І
а¤µа¤їа¤§аҐ‡а¤Їа¤•) (also referred to as the citizens ombudsman bill) is a proposed
anti corruption law designed to effectively deter corruption, redress grievances and
protect whistleblowers. The law would create an ombudsman called the Jan Lokpal;
this would be an independent body similar to the Election Commission of India with
the power to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without prior government

Every month on its website, the Lokayukta will publish a list of cases dealt with,
brief details of each, their outcome and any action taken or proposed. It will also
publish lists of all cases received by the Lokayukta during the previous month,
cases dealt with and those which are pending. Investigations of each case must be
completed in one year. Any resulting trials should be concluded in the following
year, giving a total maximum process time of two years. Losses caused to the

the anti corruption branch of the CBI) will be merged into Lokpal which will have
complete power and authority to independently investigate and prosecute any officer,
judge or politician. Whistleblowers who alert the agency to potential corruption cases

consider a candidate s maturity or complete a thorough background check. There
was no close investigation of instances where drill sergeants had beaten their wives,
