The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 released at least 10.8 million gallons of oil, severely damaging the coastal ecosystem and killing numerous animals, with long-lasting environmental consequences. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill, triggered by a BP drilling rig explosion, is on track to exceed the Exxon Valdez spill, spilling thousands of barrels daily and affecting a large area visible from space. In response, Louisiana is actively working on containment efforts as the spill continues to grow.
