Occupational Health
and Safety
Training for new and
existing employees
By Jodie Lowe
Welcome and Introduction
Welcome everyone
Today we are covering our company’s Occupational
Health and Safety policies for new and existing
employees.
Let’s get started with some information to help
familiarize new workers with key information.
Induction for New Employees
Your supervisor, George Clooney, will manage your
induction. Ask any questions of him except those about
his recent marriage to brilliant lawyer, Amal.
You will be personally introduced to the team shortly.
George will also show you around the building so you
know where everything is.
A map will be included of the building in your Induction
Pack as well a chart showing Who’s Who in the business.
George will explain day to day requirements of the job,
hours you will work, meal breaks and daily logistics.
Your supervisor, George Clooney
Occupational Health and Safety
for New Employees
Your Health and Safety
Representatives
Ewan McGregor (left) and Colin Firth
(right)
Occupational Health and Safety for
new employees
Ewan and Colin will do a separate
OHS presentation for you
explaining matters such as
correct posture, keyboard use
and other OHS practices used in
our company.
FYI, Colin doesn’t like talking
about Pride and Prejudice and
just wants to be known for
taking OHS seriously.
So do we.
Equipment safety
checks
Computers are maintained by our IT department
Employees log computer faults using a maintenance form.
Ergonomic chairs in our office are checked every six months and staff are
encouraged to report any problems.
Company cars are serviced every 12 months and are in excellent working
order.
Electrical cabling is safely installed in the building and regularly checked by a
qualified person to ensure it meets the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760.
The Fire Service checks all our smoke alarms are working every six
months
Existing and potential hazards
Not having any emergency plan
Not clearly showing where emergency exits are
Walkways cluttered with objects
Electrical cabling left out for people to trip over
Incorrect lifting of heavy objects
Employee fatigue
Mats that can cause people to slip
Spills not cleaned up off the floor
Toxic chemicals on site
Poor ventilation
Bullying
Our procedure for
controlling risks
Reporting workplace OHS incidents and store these on a safe, central database
Recording injuries caused in these incidents
Getting regular feedback from employments about unsafe features of the
business; equipment and/or the building itself
Conducting regular risk assessments and work out how you would deal with
the most serious OHS risks and formulate a plan
Educating employees about how to avoid injury at work
Ensuring all equipment is correctly and regularly maintained.
Safety representatives meet regularly with staff and senior management to
discuss important OHS issues and fix problems
Our process for consulting
about OH&S issues
Our safety representatives, Ewan McGregor and Colin
Firth, meet weekly with all employees and senior
management.
It’s a chance for people to share information about safety
concerns at work
The information from staff is relayed to senior
management and an action plan is developed as a priority.
Senior management will come back to staff with the
response to the OHS concerns identified
All this information is stored on a central database
Procedure for reporting risks and
incidents
Employees report risks and incidents by filling out a form available from
reception. This is given to our company’s Safety Representatives
The information and responses are stored on a central database.
As well as filling out this form, the employee must advise their direct
supervisor of the risk/incident.
Safety Representatives take the matter to senior management to ensure it
is fully investigated.
Outcome of investigation is reported back to staff as a priority and the
response to the incident will be reviewed to see how it could have been
dealt with better.
How we discuss OHS issues
Report the incident to your supervisor and safety advisor and tell
colleagues.
Every week we discuss these issues during our staff meetings
If you have a suggestion for how we can deal with an OHS issue
more effectively, tell the Safety Reps
If you are still dissatisfied with how a matter has been dealt with,
you are welcome to discuss it with Senior Management
Fire
In a fire emergency
Follow the Emergency Plan.
Copies are in every desk and on the tearoom wall
Follow all instructions from your Fire Warden, Michael Scott
Fire Emergency continued
Leave the building as directed by your Fire Warden
and if smoke is present crawl down low
Do not panic
Once you are safely outside please move to the
designated emergency meeting location and
remain there and await further instructions
The Fire Warden will have rung the Fire Brigade
and they will be on their way
Injury
Immediately contact the First Aid
Officer, Jerry Seinfeld
Call the ambulance on 000
Assault
If someone is assaulted at work
Immediately dial 000 and call Tasmania Police and
Ambulance Tasmania
In an electricity emergency dial 000
For power outages contact the
distributor Tas Networks on 13 2004
Gas emergencies and faults 180 2111
Your Employer’s OHS
Obligations
In Tasmania you’re employer must give you:
 A safe work environment
 Procedures which allow you to work safely
 Tell you if any work tasks come with hazards
 Training so that you can do your job safely
 Supervision
 Protective equipment and clothing
