OFFICE
BROWBEAT
The top most
difficult things to
deal with in the
workplace is the
office browbeat.
• Even things have changed in terms of Science
& Technology Bullying has been the same in
work place in all sectors.
There are a few ways to identify and render the
bully inoperable. I will begin with identifying the
bully. This is usually done by observing their
behavior.
1) The Know-It-All : These are the people who hear
and see everything. They use this knowledge of
the office as a weapon. They will not inform their
peers of changes being made or they will give
them false information.
The Critic: No matter what you or
anybody else does, it falls short of
their expectations. And they have
no qualms about telling everyone
this.
• The Defender: They are always at the ready to
justify and rationalize their behavior.
• The Under miner: These people are usually in a
position of authority. What they do is block an
employee's work or progress on a project. They
might promise a project to someone then reassign
it to someone else in the office without
explanation.
• The Thief: These people take credit for someone's
work without acknowledging that person.
1)The Know -it-All only has as much power as
you allow them to. Their power comes from
incoming information. If you feel as though
you are missing out on vital information, seek
out other people as an alternative source.
Once you get your information from elsewhere,
they will cease to be bothered with you. That is
how bullies are.
2) When dealing with the critic, it is important to
remember that you NEED to look bad to them
so they can look better. It does not mean that
their work is any better than yours. They just
want it to appear that way.
I have found the best way of dealing with these
people is to make sure your work is as perfect
as you can make it. Because at some point
someone is going to disagree with the bully
and they will end up being silenced. People in
the workplace grow tired of constant
complaining.
3) The Defender is a little more difficult to deal
with. Since they always have an excuse for their
behavior. The one thing they do run out of though
is time. You see while they are defending what
they have not been able to accomplish, other
people will be moving ahead of them in the firm.
All you have to do is remain consistent with your
work and the rest will take care of itself. While
your work will get praise the defender will be
spending a lot of time explaining themselves.
4) It is no fun at all being passed over for a project.
Often when this happens, the project you are
given instead , is inferior in comparison. Being
able to complete the assignment you are given is
of the utmost importance. Allowing this situation
to make you depressed only feeds this bullies ego.
Showing them you are not bothered in the least is
the best revenge. Remember, bullies have a short
attention span. As soon as they know you are not
affected by their behavior, they will move on.
5) Whenever I have had a boss who tries to steal
my work, I have found that they can only take
so much credit for so long. You see they will be
able to take credit for your work on a specific
project. But when it comes down to the
intricacies of the account you are working on
they will invariably fall short on information.
When this happens the undermining will cease.
Once people discover your true talent nothing
can stop you.
Unfortunately, bullies never grow up. Their tactics
are the same as they were on the playground in
school. Only now they are wearing professional
clothing. By paying attention to these people you
can learn how to avoid the pitfalls that bullies
want you to fall into.
They cannot survive positive people at all, because
no matter how much success they achieve, they
are truly never happy or satisfied. You will be
satisfied when you realize that they are powerless
over you and your actions!
