ANSWER
EVOLUTION
The Evolution and Structure of
Objectives:
1. Enumerate the different
structure of ocean basin
2. Determine the evolution of
ocean basin
What is Ocean Basins?
Ocean basins form initially by the
stretching and splitting (rifting) of
continental crust and by the rise
of mantle material and magma
into the crack to form new
oceanic lithosphere.
Ocean basins is also a
consequence of plate motion.
Subducting slabs pull on their
plates leading to spreading at
divergent plate boundaries.
5 MAJOR OCEAN
BASINS
1. Pacific Basin
2. Atlantic Basin
3. Indian Basin
4. Artic Basin
5. Southern Basin
The structure of ocean basins,
involves measuring the size
and shape of the Earth’s
ocean basins.
THE “CONTINENTAL MARGINS” OF
MAJOR FEATURES OF THE OCEAN
FLOOR ARE:
STRUCTURE OF OCEAN BASIN
1. Continental Shelf- Partly shallow extension of the
continent underwater.
2. Continental Slope- Transition zone of continental
shelf and deep ocean floor. It stars from oceanic crust
to continental crust.
3. Continental Rise- It is where the ocean begins. All
basaltic and oceanic rocks are found here. It is the
place where sediments from land are washed. The
continental margin starts from continental shelf up to
continental rise.
Continental shelf
Continental slope
Abyssal plain
Volcanic arc
Volcanic island
Coral reef
Trench
Continental rise
TYPES OF MARGINS
PASSIVE- inactive surface is slow to
change and does little more than collect
sediment.
ACTIVE- active ocean basins have a lot of
new structures being created and shaped.
STRUCTURE OF OCEAN BASIN
4. Trench- It is the deepest part of the ocean.
5. Abyssal Plain- The flattest part of the ocean.
50% of the Earth’s surface is being covered by
this plain.
6. Mid-Oceanic Ridge- The seafloor mountain
system which is situated in the middle of the
ocean basin. It is where upwelling of magma
happens which causes the sea floor to spread.
STRUCTURE OF OCEAN BASIN
7. Deep Ocean Basin – are typically flat or
subdued topography.
EVOLUTION OF
OCEAN BASIN
According to Wilson cycle, the
stages of ocean basin evolution
includes:
1. Embryonic Ocean Basin
2. Juvenile Ocean Basin
3. Mature Ocean Basin
4. Declining Ocean Basin
5. Terminal Ocean Basin
6. Suturing (Continental Collision)
