Hydronephrosis is the swelling of one or both kidneys due to a build-up of urine caused by a blockage or obstruction preventing urine from draining normally from the kidney to the bladder. Pyonephrosis occurs when hydronephrosis is further complicated by a kidney infection, resulting in pus collecting in the swollen kidney. Treatment options for hydronephrosis include minimally invasive procedures like percutaneous nephrostomy tubes, ureteral stents, and nephrolithotripsy, as well as open surgical operations to bypass or remove the obstruction.
