1. Review comprehension listening from
yesterday
 What did we listen to?
 What was the topic of the listening?
 What were the caller’s opinions?
 Do you agree or disagree with the
opinions? Why?
 Identify phrases used to agree or
disagree in listening.

 Support opinions with simple personal
examples in simple complete sentences
 Use level-appropriate vocabulary to
communicate ideas in discussions
 Identify topic, main idea, and details of short
interviews
 Demonstrate comprehension by answering
s imple questions
 Identify basic phrases to agree and disagree
pol itely
o How wi ll this be assessed in the

(summarize information)
o How wi ll this be assessed in the
lesson?
 I wi l l ask ss to identify
phrases that the host uses
to s ignal his summary
sentences.
 Ss should use some kind
of s ignal phrase in their
example summary
sentences as well.
Signal phrases for summaries in text: “to wra p up”
Thi s outcome will also be assessed in the Unit 4
l i stening test.
1. This task was designed to review a listening we did in class the day before. In addi tion, the task is
meant to allow students to recognize and identify opinions expressed in the listening. Students will also
be able to express their agreement or disagreement with the opinions expressed in the listening. This is
a review of language we covered in Unit 2 (p. 44). Finally, this task will allow students to draft a
summary sentence as if they were the host of the radio program. We’ve done concluding/summary
sentences briefly in previous units (for presentations), and this task will help us transition to talking
more specifically about identifying and using summaries.
ESL 130
Daily Lesson Plan
Wednesday, October 15th For observation.
2. This task is designed as a follow-up task to the comprehension review. Students will be able to
compare their own summary sentences from the first task with the example given by the host in the
listening. We will highlight the signal phrase the host used to show he was going to summarize/conclude
the show as well as brainstorm a list of other signal phrases that students could use in such
summaries/conclusions. We did a similar brainstorming during Unit 2.
I will ask students to notice how phrases of agreement are used to signal smaller summaries for each
individual caller, and the final signal phrase to summarize the entire program. We will also discuss when
such phrases could be useful for them (small group discussions, presentations, etc.).
Both primary learning objectives (in red above) will be informally assessed during the class activities.
They will also be assessed in the Unit 4 listening test.

In addi tion, the task is meant to allow students to recognize and identify opinions expressed in the listening. Students will also be able to express their agreement or disagreement with the opinions expressed in the listening. This is a review of language we covered in Unit 2 (p. 44). Finally, this task will allow students to draft a summary sentence as if they were the host of the radio program. We’ve done concluding/summary sentences briefly in previous units (for presentations), and this task will help us transition to talking more specifically about identifying and using summaries.
  • 2. ESL 130 Daily Lesson Plan Wednesday, October 15th For observation. 2. This task is designed as a follow-up task to the comprehension review. Students will be able to compare their own summary sentences from the first task with the example given by the host in the listening. We will highlight the signal phrase the host used to show he was going to summarize/conclude the show as well as brainstorm a list of other signal phrases that students could use in such summaries/conclusions. We did a similar brainstorming during Unit 2. I will ask students to notice how phrases of agreement are used to signal smaller summaries for each individual caller, and the final signal phrase to summarize the entire program. We will also discuss when such phrases could be useful for them (small group discussions, presentations, etc.). Both primary learning objectives (in red above) will be informally assessed during the class activities. They will also be assessed in the Unit 4 listening test.
