Profession
A profession is a paid occupation especially one that involves
prolonged training and a formal qualification.
Profession is any type of work that needs special training or a
particular skill, often one that is respected because it involves
high level of education.
NURSING
Nursing is to assist the individual (sick or well) in the
performance of those activities contributing to health, its
recovery(or to a peaceful death) that he would perform
unaided, if he had the necessary strength, will or the
knowledge and to do this in such a way as to help him
gain independence as rapidly as possible.
NURSING AS A PROFESSION
Nursing is an art and science. It requires the
understanding and application of specific
knowledge and skills, and it draws on knowledge
and technique derived from the humanities as
physical, mental, medical and biological sciences.
CRITERIA OF NURSING PROFESSION
Specialized body of knowledge: Nursing has developed a
specialized body of knowledge which forms the theoretical
basis and applies its body of knowledge for the practice in
nursing.
High intellectual level of functioning: Nursing is a profession
which needs individuals of high intellectual and personal
qualities to provide quality care.
High level of individual responsibility and accountability: Nurses
must be accountable and are responsible to the service they
provide to clients.
Evidence-based practice: Nursing profession practices
nursing, in which care and interventions are based on
data available for research.
Autonomy: Nursing is a profession which provides
freedom for action and opportunity for continued
professional growth and economic security.
Service to society: Nursing has been associated with
service to others. Professionals service to society requires
integrity and responsibility for ethical practice and a
lifelong commitment.
PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING
PHILO - LOVE
SOPHY - WISDOM
Leddy and Pepper(2003) defined philosophy of nursing as
the intellectual and affectionative outcomes of the
professional nurses, efforts to understand the ultimate
relationship among humans, environment, and health; to
approach nursing as a scientific discipline; to integrate a
sense of values into practice; and to articulate a personal
belief system about human beings, environment, health
and nursing.
CHARACTERISTICS OF NURSING PROFESSION
 Nurses make contributions to society and have
relationship to the society, its culture and institutions.
 In nursing profession, there is a body of knowledge
that is continually enlarged through research and
applies this knowledge in nursing practice.
 Nursing profession uses nursing theories as a basis
for practice.
 The nursing services involve responsibilities and
intelligent decisions and care.
 Nursing practitioners are relatively independent and control their
own policies and activities.
 In nursing profession, there is code of ethics to guide nursing
practice.
 nursing profession provides its practitioners freedom of action and
opportunity for personal and professional growth.
 In nursing service, there are professional organization as TRAINED
NURSES ASSOCIATION OF INDIA (TNAI) which encourages high
standards of nursing practice.
QUALIFICATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSE
A GOOD NURSE SHOULD:
o Have faith in the fundamental values that underlie the democratic
way of life.
o Have faith in the reality of spiritual and esthetic values and
awareness of the value in the pleasure of self development.
o Have the basic skills and knowledge necessary to apply to present
day social problems realistic and well ordered.
o Have skill in using written and spoken language.
o Understand and appreciate the importance of
good health
oLike hard work and possess a capacity for it.
oAppreciate high standards of workmanship
oKnow nursing so thoroughly that every person will
receive excellent care.

Nursing as a profession

  • 3. Profession A profession is a paid occupation especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification. Profession is any type of work that needs special training or a particular skill, often one that is respected because it involves high level of education.
  • 4. NURSING Nursing is to assist the individual (sick or well) in the performance of those activities contributing to health, its recovery(or to a peaceful death) that he would perform unaided, if he had the necessary strength, will or the knowledge and to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible.
  • 5. NURSING AS A PROFESSION Nursing is an art and science. It requires the understanding and application of specific knowledge and skills, and it draws on knowledge and technique derived from the humanities as physical, mental, medical and biological sciences.
  • 6. CRITERIA OF NURSING PROFESSION Specialized body of knowledge: Nursing has developed a specialized body of knowledge which forms the theoretical basis and applies its body of knowledge for the practice in nursing. High intellectual level of functioning: Nursing is a profession which needs individuals of high intellectual and personal qualities to provide quality care. High level of individual responsibility and accountability: Nurses must be accountable and are responsible to the service they provide to clients.
  • 7. Evidence-based practice: Nursing profession practices nursing, in which care and interventions are based on data available for research. Autonomy: Nursing is a profession which provides freedom for action and opportunity for continued professional growth and economic security. Service to society: Nursing has been associated with service to others. Professionals service to society requires integrity and responsibility for ethical practice and a lifelong commitment.
  • 8. PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING PHILO - LOVE SOPHY - WISDOM Leddy and Pepper(2003) defined philosophy of nursing as the intellectual and affectionative outcomes of the professional nurses, efforts to understand the ultimate relationship among humans, environment, and health; to approach nursing as a scientific discipline; to integrate a sense of values into practice; and to articulate a personal belief system about human beings, environment, health and nursing.
  • 9. CHARACTERISTICS OF NURSING PROFESSION  Nurses make contributions to society and have relationship to the society, its culture and institutions.  In nursing profession, there is a body of knowledge that is continually enlarged through research and applies this knowledge in nursing practice.  Nursing profession uses nursing theories as a basis for practice.  The nursing services involve responsibilities and intelligent decisions and care.
  • 10.  Nursing practitioners are relatively independent and control their own policies and activities.  In nursing profession, there is code of ethics to guide nursing practice.  nursing profession provides its practitioners freedom of action and opportunity for personal and professional growth.  In nursing service, there are professional organization as TRAINED NURSES ASSOCIATION OF INDIA (TNAI) which encourages high standards of nursing practice.
  • 11. QUALIFICATIONS OF PROFESSIONAL NURSE A GOOD NURSE SHOULD: o Have faith in the fundamental values that underlie the democratic way of life. o Have faith in the reality of spiritual and esthetic values and awareness of the value in the pleasure of self development. o Have the basic skills and knowledge necessary to apply to present day social problems realistic and well ordered. o Have skill in using written and spoken language.
  • 12. o Understand and appreciate the importance of good health oLike hard work and possess a capacity for it. oAppreciate high standards of workmanship oKnow nursing so thoroughly that every person will receive excellent care.
