Deep in the mountains in the southwest corner of North Carolina is a river unlike any other. Halfway
through my perilous rafting journey, there was a moment when time stood still. I witnessed a natural
phenomenon which displayed the beauty of nature at its finest. During that moment, I realized the
insignificance of humanity, and why we should respect the overwhelming power of nature. The
Nantahala is a whitewater river nestled in a valley with steep mountains flanking it on all sides. The

UNSTEADY STATE HEAT TRANSFER
Heat transfer processes are prominent in engineering due to several applications in industry and
environment. Heat transfer is central to the performance of propulsion systems, design of conventional
space and water heating systems, cooling of electronic equipment, and many manufacturing processes
(Campos 3).
Unsteady state conduction is the class of heat transfer in which the temperature of the conducting
medium varies with time and position. This occurs frequently in industrial processes, especially food
preservation and sterilization, where the temperature of the food or of the heating or cooling medium

Doctor. The book started by giving insight into Claudia s life including her challenging career, whom
she spent her days with and how she used her free time. Based on the title of the book I was expecting
her to suffer from a traumatic brain injury, but I had not anticipated her reaction to it. Although I was
aware of some disorientation after the incident, and even some memory loss, I was unaware of her
disorientation to the life she once knew. Initially, when Claudia did not realize she had any memory
deficits, I was convinced it was due to denial. She was a doctor, I would have thought she would
understand her injury and recognize that her injury was as severe as it truly was. Later on in the book,
I realized that she was not completely in denial, but truly thought there was nothing truly wrong with
her. This could possibly be due to her perspective that nothing bad would happen to her. Every one
sees something bad happen whether it is a car accident, cancer, or a traumatic brain injury and they
think, It won t happen to me. In Claudia s case, it is an extremely frightening and frustrating situation.

Barak Lost Link With The Natural World
During a world literature class, we watched a film called Baraka, which was cinematically beautiful
and restored within me this lost link with the natural world. It was a compilation of footage of people
and places all over the world, spliced together to form this story of the lives we lead in this modern
world. The film juxtaposed the hectic environment of the machinery that drives the mass production
of consumer goods with footage of serene Japanese snow monkeys relaxing in hot spring baths. This
to me represented how unnatural the world filled with technology and mass consumption in which we
live really is and how it fares poorly when compared with the natural world. It caught my eye that too
often as human beings we are caught up in the motions of life. As I was watching, I was undergoing a
self realization that we forget that we have some other purpose in life besides our monotonous
routines. We aren t just some specks under the sprawling skyscrapers and cities, we must retain our
bond with nature.
Baraka presented these subliminal images that I could easily develop into connections to my life. The
film illustrated the being of nature that exists around us and how indiscreetly we human beings are
becoming forgetful of it. Images of parents driving their children in different countries to school, to
me was a metaphor of delivering them to this promised future of success. In the film this was
juxtaposed to a scene where an innocent child confined to poverty is looking
