Rizal came from an educated family with Chinese and Spanish ancestry. He had a gifted education starting from private tutors at home before attending the Ateneo Municipal de Manila where he consistently achieved excellent grades. He went on to study medicine in Spain and earned additional degrees. Throughout his schooling, Rizal demonstrated talents in art, poetry and academics. He was influenced by incidents of injustice against Filipinos under Spanish rule that motivated his dedication to reform.
04 - Rizal's Life: Higher Education and Life Abroad (Part 1) | Life and Works...Humi
Rizal enrolled in the six-year Bachiller en Artes program at Ateneo, which exposed students to five subjects:
Christian doctrine;
Languages of Spanish, Latin, Greek and French;
History and Geography (world history and geography, history of Spain and the Philippines;
Mathematics and Sciences (geometry, trigonometry, mineralogy, chemistry, physics, botany and zoology); and the
Classic disciplines (poetry, rhetoric, and philosophy).
Teaching at Ateneo was unique because classes were divided into two groups that constantly competed against each other to foster healthy competition. One group, called the Roman Empire, was comprised of the interns (boarders), while the other, the Carthaginian Empire, consisted of the externs (non-boarders).
Within each empire, members were also in continuous competition as they vied for the top ranks, called dignitaries, with Emperor being the highest position, followed by Tribune, Decurion, Centurion, and Standard-Bearer, respectively.
On Rizal's first day, he went to mass at the college chapel and prayed for guidance and success. Then, he went to his class, which consisted of Spaniards, mestizos, and Filipinos.
Since he was new and didn't know much Spanish, Rizal was placed at the bottom of the class as an externo. However, he quickly showed that he was a hardworking and capable student. Within a week, he was moved up to a higher rank. He continued to do well, and within a month, he became the Emperor of their empire. As a reward, he received a religious picture.
To improve his Spanish, Rizal took private lessons at Santa Isabel College during his lunch breaks. He paid three pesos each month, which was a substantial amount of money at that time.
In the second half of his first year, Rizal felt like he hadn't worked hard enough. He wasn't able to stay at the top of his class like he did in the first half, and instead consistently got second place in all of his subjects. His teacher's negative comments about him made him lose motivation.
After studying at the Ateneo, Jose Rizal enrolled in the University of Santo Tomas (UST), a Dominican school that was established in 1611.
Donya Teodora, a known advocate for education, surprised her son, Jose Rizal, when she forbade him from studying at the University of Santo Tomas (UST). In his student memoirs, Rizal wrote: "I still remember and will never forget that when I was sixteen, my mother told my father, 'Don't send him to Manila any longer. He knows enough; if he gets to know more, they will cut off his head.' My father did not reply, but my brother took me to Manila despite my mother's tears."
In April 1877, nearly sixteen-year-old Jose Rizal took a course of Philosophy and Letters in the Dominican school. The reason behind this is his father, who wants him to study metaphysics. This will give him a solid foundation in the liberal arts, which could prepare him for a career in law. At the same time, he took a course of surveying in Ateneo.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

later to Manila and abroad.
The world was open to Rizal through his own mother.

Childhood Memories
Rizal had good memories of his childhood days in
Calamba. He grew up a pios Catholic owing to the
training provided his mother. At 3 yrs old he learned
how to pray and even read the bible. He learned
the value of scholarship and intellectual honesty.
At the age of four , Rizal experienced his first
sorrow. This was when his younger sister
Concepcion, with whom he fondly called Concha
died. As a young boy. He spent many hours down
the shore of Laguna….so it can be noted that he
was a good observer, noting he was a good
observer. These observations of Rizal had an
impact of his political and social ideas later.
Early Demonstration of Inborn Talents
- The young Rizal also showed his knack in
sketching, painting, sculpture, and literature.
Acc. to Romero (1978). The panoramic beauty
of Calamba, Rizal‘s admiration of his mother
led him to home his skills in the aforementioned
art forms. At 8 years old he was able to write a
poem.
- The above poem clearly reveals that Rizal,
even his tender had a concept of nationalism,
Here, he associated love for the native
language bestowed by God with the desire of
the freedom, which acc to him was on
mortgage . As a young boy he was already
aware that his people had his own language,
just like other languages, had his own alphabet,
writing, which acc to Rizal disappeared
because they were swallowed up by tidal
waves. So, here we can see a young lad
describing his native language, or Tagalog as
comfortable to Latin, and Spanish,
The First Taste of Injustice
As a young boy Rizal witnessed how his town
mates were tortured, treated rudely brutally by
Spanish officials and the Guardia Civil. In fact, he
spent a lot of thinking why the people had to
suffer such brutality and unfair treatment. An
incident, which opened his eyes to the injustice of
the regime was the arrest and incarceration of his
mother in 1871 due to her alleged complicity in
the attempted murder of his uncle s wife ( Jose
Aberto.)
Another incident that greatly influenced Rizal s
goal and life work was the martyrdom of
Gomburza ( Capino, 1977)
If it were not for the unjust execution of three
priests, Rizal would have been a member of
Jesuits in the Phils. The influence of the
aforementioned event was evident in his
dedication of the El Fiibusterismo to the memory
of Gomburza
.
2. Preparation for Formal Schooling
Rizal’ s first teacher Dona Teodora discovered that
Rizal had an aptitude in poetry.
Rizal’s first private tutor was Maestro Celestino,
followed by Maestro Lucas Padua
The third tutor however was Leon Monroy where Rizal’
s skill in reading, writing, and the rudiments of Latin
honed
Just like other children from the principalia class, was
trained to become a middle –class intellectual or
illustrado.
First he was subjected to education under private
tutors.
Then he was sent to a private secondary school and
went to a university for a college degree and
completed studies in Europe.

Rizal the moth died a victim of illusion in its
search for the light. Nevertheless, he came to
realize the sweetness of dying in search for the
light, This story can be a considered as Rizals
biography. Just like the moth that died a victim
3. of illusion. Rizal died a martyr in search of the
lights of truth, freedom and justice. From the
story, Rizal came to realize that one has to
sacrifice and to suffer the consequence of one
‘s action for the attainment of a goal.
