1. RIZAL – A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Rizal’s Birth
June 19, 1861 – Wednesday between
eleven and twelve o’clock at midnight
Jose Rizal was born.
June 22 – he was baptized at a Catholic
Church of Calamba by a priest Rev.
Rufino Collantes.
November 8, 1826. She died at the age
of 85.
Rafael Palma – he said that Rizal
inherited “from his father a profound
sense of dignity and self-respect,
seriousness and self possession: and
from his mother the temperament of the
poet and dreamer bravery for sacrifice.
Jose – this name was chosen by his
mother.
Rizal Family – was a respected and
considered one of the riches families in
Calamba during that time.
Calamba : “The Cradle of a Genuis”
The Children of Rizal
Calamba – is a town named after a
native big jar.
Paciano (1851-1930) – the hero’s only
brother. He was the filosopo Tasio in
Noli Me Tangere. In 1930 he died
almost “unwept, unhonored and unsung”
and buried in Manila.
Francisco Mercado (1818-1898) – the
hero’s father born in Biñan, Laguna. Dr.
Rizal called him “a model of fathers”. He
died at the age of 80, a year after hero’s
execution.
Domingo Lamco – his great, great
grandfather was Christian Chinese.
Mercado – original family name of Don
Francisco.
June 28, 1848 – Don Francisco married
Teodora Alonzo Realonda.

Rizal’s mother, born in Manila on

Saturnina(1850-1913),
Narcisca(1852-1939),
Olimpia(1855-1887),

Josefa(1865-1919),
Trinidad(1868-1951) , and
Solidad (1870-1929)
All of them got married except
Josefa and Trinidad, who were
spinsters, and Concepcion who
died at the age of 3.
Rizal’s Ancestry
Lakan-Dula (The Last King of Tondo) –
Rizal’s maternal ancestor.
Eugenio Ursua – his maternal greatgreat-grandfather.
The Name Rizal
Mercado – means “market” in Spanish.
1849 – Governor Claveria issued a
decree.
Cruz, Diaz, Guzman, Luna, Ramos,
Reyes, Rivera, Santos, and Trinidad –
the list of surnames sent to Calamba.
Rizal – originated from the word racial
w/c signifies “green field”.

3. SCHOOL LIFE AT ATENEO AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF STO. TOMAS
Ateneo Municipal – a college under the
supervision of Spanish Jesuits.
Escuela Pia (Charity School) – a
college was a rival of the Dominicanowned college of San Juan de Letran.
College of San Juan de Letran – Jose
took the entrance examinations on
Christian doctrine, arithmetic, and
reading. And passed then all.
Rizal’s First Day in Ateneo
He was dressed like the others with coat
and tie. He went to his class, where he
saw a great number of boys, Spaniards,
mestizos, & Filipinos, and a Jesuit who
was the professor.
Rizal’s Poem on Education
Rizal wrote this poem when he was only
fifteen years old.
Artistic Skill in Sculpture
The Council of the Gods
Young Rizal impressed his professors
and classmates when he curved the
image of the Virgin Mary on a piece of
Philippine hard wood-batikuling with a
pocket-knife.
His prize-winning poem, “A La Juventud
Filipina” whom Rizal emplored urgently

to let his genius fly swifter than the wind.
