RIZAL – A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Rizal’s Birth
June 19, 1861 – Wednesday between
eleven and twelve o’clock at midnight
Jose Rizal was born.
June 22 – he was baptized at a Catholic
Church of Calamba by a priest Rev.
Rufino Collantes.

November 8, 1826. She died at the age
of 85.
Rafael Palma – he said that Rizal
inherited “from his father a profound
sense of dignity and self-respect,
seriousness and self possession: and
from his mother the temperament of the
poet and dreamer bravery for sacrifice.

Jose – this name was chosen by his
mother.

Rizal Family – was a respected and
considered one of the riches families in
Calamba during that time.

Calamba : “The Cradle of a Genuis”

The Children of Rizal

Calamba – is a town named after a
native big jar.

Paciano (1851-1930) – the hero’s only
brother. He was the filosopo Tasio in
Noli Me Tangere. In 1930 he died
almost “unwept, unhonored and unsung”
and buried in Manila.

Francisco Mercado (1818-1898) – the
hero’s father born in Biñan, Laguna. Dr.
Rizal called him “a model of fathers”. He
died at the age of 80, a year after hero’s
execution.
Domingo Lamco – his great, great
grandfather was Christian Chinese.
Mercado – original family name of Don
Francisco.
June 28, 1848 – Don Francisco married
Teodora Alonzo Realonda.
Doña Teodora Alonzo (1826-1911) –
Rizal’s mother, born in Manila on

Saturnina(1850-1913),
Narcisca(1852-1939),
Olimpia(1855-1887),
Lucia(1857-1919),
Maria(1859-1945),
Concepcion(1862-1865),
Josefa(1865-1919),
Trinidad(1868-1951) , and
Solidad (1870-1929)

 All of them got married except
Josefa and Trinidad, who were
spinsters, and Concepcion who
died at the age of 3.

Rizal’s Ancestry
Lakan-Dula (The Last King of Tondo) –
Rizal’s maternal ancestor.
Eugenio Ursua – his maternal greatgreat-grandfather.
The Name Rizal
Mercado – means “market” in Spanish.
1849 – Governor Claveria issued a
decree.
Cruz, Diaz, Guzman, Luna, Ramos,
Reyes, Rivera, Santos, and Trinidad –
the list of surnames sent to Calamba.
Rizal – originated from the word racial
w/c signifies “green field”.
The Rizal House
1st Floor – bounded with thick walls of
lime and store.
2nd Floor – was made entirely of hard
wood except for the roof which was of
red tile.
Azotea – located at the back.
Tropical fruit bearing trees – located
behind the house.

Rizal 15 years old
 He is a student in Ateneo de
Manila, he reminisced a poem of
Calamba (Un Recuerdo A. Mi
Pueblo) which means In Memory
of My Town by Dr. Frank C.
Laubach.
Boyhood Memories
 Characterized by playing in the
garden watching the marveled
birds.
 Listening music at the branch of a
tree.
 At night they us to pray Angelus
with Jose and children, sharing
stories about fairytales.
 He was pious and devoted son of
the Catholic Church.
Rizal 3 years old
 His life began to bitter when little
Concha (Concepcion) whom he

fondly called died, and that’s the
first time he use to cried a lot and
intense grief.
 He learned Alphabet from his
mother.
 He was the younger brother.
I learned to write in my own town – a
poem wrote by a young hero.
Rizal 9 years old
 He was sent by his father to
Biñan to continue his studying of
latin lesson on December 7,
1871.
Rizal in Biñan School
 He excelled in all subjects.
 Stay for one and half years in
Biñan.

Paciano, Jose – one of the reasons
why fathersnwas executed.
Rizal 11 years old
 Experience when Gom-Bur-Za

extremely
mournful
execution happened.

 Doña Teodora arbitrary arrested
on a malicious charge.
 She immediately thrown to the
provincial jail in Sta. Cruz.
 She was force to scorching at the
heat of sun from Calamba to Sta.
Cruz.

February 17, 1872 - at Cavite GomBur-Za accused of Conspiracy.

SCHOOL LIFE AT ATENEO AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF STO. TOMAS

Ateneo Municipal – a college under the
supervision of Spanish Jesuits.
Escuela Pia (Charity School) – a
college was a rival of the Dominicanowned college of San Juan de Letran.
College of San Juan de Letran – Jose
took the entrance examinations on
Christian doctrine, arithmetic, and
reading. And passed then all.
Rizal’s First Day in Ateneo
He was dressed like the others with coat
and tie. He went to his class, where he
saw a great number of boys, Spaniards,
mestizos, & Filipinos, and a Jesuit who
was the professor.
Rizal’s Poem on Education
Rizal wrote this poem when he was only
fifteen years old.

Artistic Skill in Sculpture

The Council of the Gods

Young Rizal impressed his professors
and classmates when he curved the
image of the Virgin Mary on a piece of
Philippine hard wood-batikuling with a
pocket-knife.

His prize-winning poem, “A La Juventud
Filipina” whom Rizal emplored urgently
the Filipino youth to “rise from lethargy,
to let his genius fly swifter than the wind.

The students were trained by rigid
discipline and character development.
Rizal’s First Day at the

Rizal who was sixteen years old enroll in
the university taking Philosophy and
letters.
Rizal’s Days at Sto. Tomas
The academic climate at the University
of Sto. Tomas was quite different from
the Ateneo.
Rizal’s First Love
The girl who captured his heart was the
fourteen-years old Segundiwa Katigbak,
who was a boarder at La Concordia
College where his elder sisters were
studying.

  • 1. RIZAL – A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Rizal’s Birth June 19, 1861 – Wednesday between eleven and twelve o’clock at midnight Jose Rizal was born. June 22 – he was baptized at a Catholic Church of Calamba by a priest Rev. Rufino Collantes. November 8, 1826. She died at the age of 85. Rafael Palma – he said that Rizal inherited “from his father a profound sense of dignity and self-respect, seriousness and self possession: and from his mother the temperament of the poet and dreamer bravery for sacrifice. Jose – this name was chosen by his mother. Rizal Family – was a respected and considered one of the riches families in Calamba during that time. Calamba : “The Cradle of a Genuis” The Children of Rizal Calamba – is a town named after a native big jar. Paciano (1851-1930) – the hero’s only brother. He was the filosopo Tasio in Noli Me Tangere. In 1930 he died almost “unwept, unhonored and unsung” and buried in Manila. Francisco Mercado (1818-1898) – the hero’s father born in Biñan, Laguna. Dr. Rizal called him “a model of fathers”. He died at the age of 80, a year after hero’s execution. Domingo Lamco – his great, great grandfather was Christian Chinese. Mercado – original family name of Don Francisco. June 28, 1848 – Don Francisco married Teodora Alonzo Realonda. Doña Teodora Alonzo (1826-1911) – Rizal’s mother, born in Manila on Rizal Sisters Saturnina(1850-1913), Narcisca(1852-1939), Olimpia(1855-1887), Lucia(1857-1919), Maria(1859-1945), Concepcion(1862-1865), Josefa(1865-1919), Trinidad(1868-1951) , and Solidad (1870-1929)  All of them got married except Josefa and Trinidad, who were spinsters, and Concepcion who died at the age of 3. Rizal’s Ancestry Lakan-Dula (The Last King of Tondo) – Rizal’s maternal ancestor. Eugenio Ursua – his maternal greatgreat-grandfather. The Name Rizal Mercado – means “market” in Spanish. 1849 – Governor Claveria issued a decree. Cruz, Diaz, Guzman, Luna, Ramos, Reyes, Rivera, Santos, and Trinidad – the list of surnames sent to Calamba. Rizal – originated from the word racial w/c signifies “green field”. The Rizal House 1st Floor – bounded with thick walls of lime and store. 2nd Floor – was made entirely of hard wood except for the roof which was of red tile. Azotea – located at the back. CHILDHOOD MEMORIES IN CALAMBA  He grew up in a environment characterized and contentment.  Ideal place for artist, budding writer and lovers who traveled from Manila. home by joy poets, of art Rizal 15 years old  He is a student in Ateneo de Manila, he reminisced a poem of Calamba (Un Recuerdo A. Mi Pueblo) which means In Memory of My Town by Dr. Frank C. Laubach. Boyhood Memories  Characterized by playing in the garden watching the marveled birds.  Listening music at the branch of a tree.  At night they us to pray Angelus with Jose and children, sharing stories about fairytales.  He was pious and devoted son of the Catholic Church. Rizal 3 years old  His life began to bitter when little Concha (Concepcion) whom he fondly called died, and that’s the first time he use to cried a lot and intense grief.  He learned Alphabet from his mother.  He was the younger brother. I learned to write in my own town – a poem wrote by a young hero. Rizal 9 years old  He was sent by his father to Biñan to continue his studying of latin lesson on December 7, 1871. Rizal in Biñan School  He excelled in all subjects.  Stay for one and half years in Biñan. Paciano, Jose – one of the reasons why fathersnwas executed. Rizal 11 years old  Experience when Gom-Bur-Za was extremely mournful execution happened. The Parable of Moth  The poem reveals Rizal t0 being nationalistic sentiments and ideals even at an early age. 8 years old  Revealed him talent given by God into literacy by writing poems.  Sa aking mga Kabata (To my fellow Children). Rizal’s Mother: A Victim of Injustice  Doña Teodora arbitrary arrested on a malicious charge.  She immediately thrown to the provincial jail in Sta. Cruz.  She was force to scorching at the heat of sun from Calamba to Sta. Cruz. GOM – BUR – ZA’S Martyrdom February 17, 1872 - at Cavite GomBur-Za accused of Conspiracy.   • 3. SCHOOL LIFE AT ATENEO AND THE UNIVERSITY OF STO. TOMAS Ateneo Municipal – a college under the supervision of Spanish Jesuits. Escuela Pia (Charity School) – a college was a rival of the Dominicanowned college of San Juan de Letran. College of San Juan de Letran – Jose took the entrance examinations on Christian doctrine, arithmetic, and reading. And passed then all. Rizal’s First Day in Ateneo He was dressed like the others with coat and tie. He went to his class, where he saw a great number of boys, Spaniards, mestizos, & Filipinos, and a Jesuit who was the professor. Rizal’s Poem on Education Rizal wrote this poem when he was only fifteen years old. Artistic Skill in Sculpture The Council of the Gods Young Rizal impressed his professors and classmates when he curved the image of the Virgin Mary on a piece of Philippine hard wood-batikuling with a pocket-knife. His prize-winning poem, “A La Juventud Filipina” whom Rizal emplored urgently the Filipino youth to “rise from lethargy, to let his genius fly swifter than the wind. Education under the Jesuits The students were trained by rigid discipline and character development. Rizal’s First Day at the Pontifical University Rizal who was sixteen years old enroll in the university taking Philosophy and letters. Rizal’s Days at Sto. Tomas The academic climate at the University of Sto. Tomas was quite different from the Ateneo. Rizal’s First Love The girl who captured his heart was the fourteen-years old Segundiwa Katigbak, who was a boarder at La Concordia College where his elder sisters were studying.
