2. Symptoms
• Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, arms, or
groin
• Abdominal pain or swelling
• Chest pain, coughing, trouble breathing
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Night sweats
• Weight loss
3. Diagnosis
• If a persistent lump is detected, additional
tests are done
• Tissue biopsy used to detect the lymphoma
• Doctor cuts into a lymph node and removes a
sample of tissue
• If Non Hodgkin lymphoma is detected,
additional tests are run, such as:
• Blood test, bone marrow biopsy, chest x-ray,
PET scan, spinal tap, MRI
4. Causes
• Actual cause is unknown
• More likely to occur in people with weakened
immune systems
• Most often affects adults, especially males
• More likely to develop in people that have had
organ transplants or HIV infection
5. Epidemiology
• Most common in adult males, commonality
has doubled in western hemisphere over past
two decades
• High rates of lymphoma among people with
autoimmune diseases
• Ultra violet radiation has been linked to NHL
7. Prognosis
• Survival rate varies widely
• 63% 5 year survival rate
• 51% 10 year survival rate
• Patients with slowly growing lymphomas more
likely to live longer
• Depends on age and whether or not organs
outside the lymphatic system are affected
