The Union Government will announce the names of the first 20 priority cities for the Smart Cities project by September 2015. These initial 20 cities will be selected based on certain pre-defined parameters. The Cabinet in Bihar approved 16 power projects aimed at improving rural electricity access and expanding existing power infrastructure. Smart city projects in Madhya Pradesh will be led by special purpose vehicles modeled on the Delhi Metro Corporation rather than local governments, and may involve partial private ownership. The Smart Cities Mission aims to cover 35% of India's urban population through projects in 98 nominated cities totaling over 13 crore residents.
