 Consultants selected for preparation of smart city plans
Of the 98 smart cities shortlisted by The Ministry of Urban Development, 88 have identified consulting firms
to prepare city-wise smart city action plans. Of the remaining 10 cities, the ones in the North-Eastern states
and the Union Territories will finalize their selection by this weekend. Some of the firms that have been
contracted include, CRISIL Risk and Infrastructure Solutions Ltd in partnership with Pri Move Infrastructure
Development Consultants Private Ltd and Probity Soft Private Ltd - for six cities, Jones Lang La Salle Property
Consultants India Pvt. Ltd in association with Townland Consultants Pvt. Ltd and Tata Consulting Engineers,
ICRA Management Consulting Pvt. Ltd in association with NJS Engineers India Pvt. Ltd and the All India
Institute of Local Self-Government - for five cities each.
 Udaipur solicits suggestions from citizens
In an effort to make it to the list of the first 20 smart cities, Udaipur has adopted an novel process to
develop a proposal for the scheme. It has established 100 booths, with around two booths in each ward,
asking citizens for inputs on their five top priorities for the city. In a classic case of citizen's engagement, so
far the city has received 60,000 forms from citizens, giving their priorities for the city. The team is analysing
the data to understand citizens' priority. The key priority areas that have emerged are cleanliness, water
supply sewerage, solid waste management and tourism.
 Indore explores smart education
The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is focusing on smart solutions to improve education standards, in its
quest for smart city status. A suggestion meet was held at SGS Institute of Technology and Science where
educationists and other dignitaries gave ideas on education in smart city concept. It was agreed that basic
infrastructure and facilities at primary schools need to be strengthened and students must be given more
practical knowledge. The city needs to be converted into a Wi-Fi zone. A diploma course in carbon
management introduced by the University would play an important role in building a smart city.
 GSIDC appoints Infosys as consultant for Panjim
The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) has finalised Software giant Infosys Ltd as
consultant by the Goa government to provide its expertise in developing Panjim as a smart city. The firm is
one of the consultants empanelled by the Union Ministry for Urban Development as experts in building
smart cities. According to the rules, the Smart City Action Plan has to be prepared within 90 days of the
consultant’s appointment.
 Cities to focus on cyber security
Cyber security is likely to be a major issue for smart city which are ‘digitally’ enabled - instrumented,
interconnected and intelligent. Smart cities will generate large amounts of big data from information
feeders such as sensors, meters, cameras and existing consumer equipment, putting both individuals and
systems at risk. Thus, digital certificates for authentication, signing and encryption will be necessary.
Industry, governments and individuals with specific capabilities have to come together to create security
architecture. Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) have been set up to coordinate and manage
cyber incidents and security.

 MCJ’s vision document - SCP
Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar (MCJ) has come up with a vision document, Smart City Proposal (SCP),
outlining its strategy for smart city. The SCP has proposed that a sustainable economy should be the main
focus of the plans. The document contains plans to mobilise resources and examines intended outcomes
of infrastructure, upgradation and smart applications. It includes a large number of infrastructure services
and smart solutions such as electricity supply - with at least 10 percent being solar energy, adequate
water supply - including waste water recycling and storm water reuse, sanitation - including solid waste
management, rainwater harvesting and smart metering.

 Centre, Maharashtra to invest on power infrastructure
To develop power infrastructure in the district of Nagpur, the Maharashtra government and the Central
Government will jointly invest INR 1,650 crore through various schemes. The Maharashtra State
Electricity Development Corporation (MSEDCL) will invest around INR 93 crore and central government
would provide over INR 1,200 crore under Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Integrated
Power Development Scheme (IPDS) and Smart City schemes. Mahatransco will invest INR 340 crore.
Other than this, works worth over INR 500 crore are going on in the district under MSEDCL and Transco's
infrastructure upgrade schemes.
 MIDC to develop Pune IT park
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will develop the Hinjewadi IT Park in Pune
as the first Smart Industrial Estate on an experimental basis and the Shendra-Bidkin integrated industrial
township project in Aurangabad. This is part of Prime Minister’s Digital India programme. MIDC has
already started working on paperless functioning and adopting e-governance.
 US firms may invest in four smart cities
A delegation from the West Bengal government met officials of the American Chamber of Commerce
(AmCham India) to discuss the ways in which US companies could partner with the four smart city
projects in the state. AmCham India will meet representatives of different urban local bodies and
consultants this month to discuss plans for smart cities as well as theme townships. The firms are
expected to express their preference for particular schemes. The state officials also highlighted the
opportunities in six-theme townships, also aiming for "smart development".
 Microsoft to offer Telangana Smart City Solutions
Microsoft India and the Telangana government are looking to jointly transform the state into a
technology-enabled one, by leveraging the latter’s technology offerings and expertise. The government
has undertaken several initiatives including a pilot project in Hyderabad to facilitate e-registration of
vehicles. The startup platform, Microsoft India, offers simple, easy to implement and low-cost solutions
within Microsoft’s CityNext programme. The company is also looking forward to supporting the
government in its digitisation efforts in the areas of transport, healthcare, public safety, water and
energy.

 Foreign companies selected for preparing Smart City plans
Global companies are showing interest in India's Smart City mission. The Ministry of Urban Development
has announced that companies from 14 countries including the US, Canada, the United Kingdom,
France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and
Abu Dhabi have been selected for the preparation of city level Smart City Plans for 42 of the Mission
cities. The deadline for the submission of city level Smart City Plans by urban local bodies is mid-
December. The plans will then be evaluated in the second stage of City Challenge Competition for the
selection of first batch of 20 cities for financing.
