 HIDCO to recycle rainwater in Rajarhat – New Town
The West Bengal government, along with Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO), is
looking to optimise the use of rainwater in the commercial areas of Rajarhat – New Town. The state’s
public health engineering department has been tasked with preparing a concept note, within one
month, outlining steps to harvest rainwater. The authorities are considering the possibility of using the
treated water, with a second stage purification, for gardening and washing in establishments like the Eco
Park, children's parks and community toilets for flushing and washing. HIDCO officials plan to send the
rainwater to the Tarulia raw water reservoirs and bring in 6 feet pipes from Hooghly river to supply
additional water into distribution channels. New Town is being developed into a Smart City and the
model could be used in other three places - Bidhannagar, Asansol and Durgapur - which have been
included in the centre's list for Smart Cities.
 Foundation laid for Amaravati Smart City
The foundation stone of Amaravati - the new capital of Andhra Pradesh – has been laid. The fifth
planned capital city in independent India, Amaravati is being developed as the country’s first greenfield
Smart City, involving multiple stakeholders – both national and international. The new Smart City would
be spread over 32,000 acres of land and will have nine specialised cities - knowledge city, financial city,
health city, tourism city, government city, sports city, electronics city, justice city and education city. The
state government has signed memorandums with the Governments of Singapore and Japan for financial
resources and technologies. The Union Government started the large-scale urbanization process with an
investment of INR 1,00,000 crore under the Smart City and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation initiatives.
 TMC hires CRISIL for Smart City project
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is hiring Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited
(CRISIL) to coordinate between residents and the government for its Smart City initiative. The analytics
firm’s services are being requisitioned for INR 1.25 crore for five years. CRISIL will formulate suggestions
received from residents and experts for the improvement of the city. It will also help in prioritizing
projects to be taken up through funding. The cost of conversion into Smart City will be divided between
the centre 50 percent, while the rest will be divided equally between the state government and the
corporation. TMC is awaiting formal approval from the general body to hire the consultant.

 GMC taking suggestions for Ghaziabad Smart City
Ghaziabad, one of the 98 cities selected for the Smart City project, has won 82 points in an assessment
conducted in August 2015 with 20 different parameters. It also ranked 138th among 476 cities in the
Swachh Bharat rankings. The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) has activated a webpage, a
Facebook page and a Twitter handle for taking views of residents for the Smart City proposal. A meeting
of Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs) was also held at the corporation's office and was attended by
50 RWA presidents. The points that emerged at the meeting included special consideration of the
interests of the underprivileged living in the districts such as creation of infrastructure to provide
healthcare, education and affordable housing for them. To work towards developing the city as an IT
hub and constructing a sports complex was also suggested. Further, Ghaziabad will be extending the
metro network from Dilshad Garden to New Bus Stand and has started work on building 18 km of cycle
tracks. Doors Consultant India has been appointed by the Union Urban Development Ministry to help
civic agencies to prepare detailed project reports.
 MCT invites citizens’ ideas for Smart City
The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) is involving voters and alternative stakeholders in finalising
proposals for its Smart City project. Citizens’ consultation is an important part of the Smart City
proposal, for which the corporation has already consulted 65,000 citizens through the Interactive Voice
Response System (IVRS) and through nearly 8,000-10,000 members of Self-Help Groups. The MCT is also
conferring with various social and professional groups like doctors, school teachers, university
professors, advocates, tax consultants, journalists, hoteliers, youth associations, members of the Tirupati
Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India - Tirupati
Chapter and the Institution of Engineers. The last date for holding consultations has been extended by a
week due to back-to-back festive events like Dusserah. The MCT is also using social media - Facebook
page ‘Smart City, Tirupati’ and Twitter - to get the ideas and has already received 1,000 suggestions.

 Sweden supporting the way for smart Delhi
In order to make Delhi a smart city, the ministers and officials of the Ministries of Health and Public
Works and Transport from Delhi are visiting Stockholm on a five-day knowledge sharing trip. The agenda
is to find ways to roll out citywide free Wi-Fi facilities, eco-friendly public transport solutions and energy
efficient housing. Ways to improve transportation infrastructure, traffic management, road planning and
public transportation to solve traffic congestion is also high on priority. The Indian delegation will be
visiting on-ground projects to assess benefits. The state government is open to the idea of inviting
investors and to exploring partnerships with Sweden to deliver affordable solutions to problems ranging
from waste management to energy-efficient public transport. Technology-efficient Stockholm is known
for its dynamic underground fibre-optic cable networks for high-speed connectivity and sustainability.
