TITLE: JAPAN TO EXTEND NUCLEAR REACTOR LIFE
BEYOND 60 YEARS
Date: February 20, 2023 Daily News
EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the
following vocabulary terms below.
1. Reactor - a device or structure used in the
production of nuclear energy.
2. Transformation - a major or complete change in
appearance, structure, etc.
3. Inclusion - the action or state of including or being
included in something.
4. Secure - to successfully get something, especially
with great difficulty.
5. Maximize - to make as large or as great as possible,
or make the best use of
6. Generation - one stage or step in the development of
a particular product or technology
EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING
The Japanese government has formally approved a
plan to continue using nuclear reactors after their
current 60-year usage limit. The new energy policy,
which was officially approved on February 10, 2023,
also allows for old reactors to be replaced with
new ones.
The new plans are part of the government's
general energy policy, which it has called "GX" —
or "Green Transformation."
This policy includes the increased use of nuclear
power and renewable energy sources, as well as
energy conservation, to create a stable energy
supply, promote economic growth, and address the
problem of climate change.
The inclusion of nuclear power in the plans is a
major change in policy for the government, which
had previously said it did not plan to replace old
reactors or build new ones.
After the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011,
public feeling in Japan turned against nuclear
power, and the government's policy was to reduce
its use.
However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February
2022 dramatically changed the world's energy
situation. The rising price of energy has made
securing a stable supply of energy a global
challenge.
Japan's answer is to move away from fossil fuels
and maximize the use of nuclear power and
renewable energy sources. The government's goal
is for 20-22% of the nation's energy to come from
nuclear power by 2030, up from 6.5% in October
2022.
The figure was 25% before the Fukushima accident.
Reaching the 2030 goal will involve restarting
nuclear reactors that were shut down after 2011,
and developing and building new, next-generation
nuclear reactors, which it is believed will be safer.
Public feeling may now be with the
government. A Jiji Press survey in July 2022 found
that nearly 50% of the Japanese public supported
the restart of nuclear reactors if their safety had
been confirmed. This was compared to 27.9% who
were against it, and 23.8% who said they had no
opinion or did not know.
EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION
1) What are your thoughts on Japan’s “Green
Transformation”?
2) Do you find it surprising that the Japanese
government has changed its nuclear energy policy?
3) What do you make of the fact that nearly 50% of the
Japanese public support restarting nuclear reactors?
4) How have energy prices changed where you live in
recent months?
5) Has your town or city experienced any energy supply
issues lately??
EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION
1. Do you take any steps to save power at home?
2. What renewable energy sources is your country
investing in?
3. Would you say that your government is doing
enough to fight climate change?
4. Do you think fossil fuels will be phased out
completely within your lifetime?
5. The nation that leads the clean energy economy will
be the nation that leads the global economy. -Barack
Obama. What do you make of this statement?

TITLE - STUDY: MULTILINGUAL PEOPLE LEARN NEW
LANGUAGES FASTER
Date: June 18, 2021 Daily News
EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the
following vocabulary terms below.
1) Multilingual - able to speak more than two languages.
2) Measure - to find the size, amount, speed, etc. Of
something
3) Activity - busy or energetic action or movement
4) Increasingly - to a greater extent
5) Identify - to find out or know who or what someone
or something is
6) Repeatedly - multiple times
EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING
A study has found that multilingual people find it
easier to learn new languages than people who are
bilingual.
Researchers measured the brain activity of 21
bilingual people and 28 multilingual people as they
tried to identify words and sentences in the Kazakh
language, which none of them spoke.
All participants in the study spoke Japanese as
their first language and English as their
second. Most of the multilingual participants spoke
Spanish as their third language — and some knew
up to five languages.
The researchers taught the participants the rules
of the Kazakh language. They then gave
participants four increasingly difficult tests to find
out if they could identify words they had learned
and make sure they were used correctly in
sentences.
While participants were taking the tests,
researchers measured their brain
activity. Participants could take each test
repeatedly until they passed it and moved on to
the next one.
It was found that multilingual participants who
were stronger in their second and third languages
had to repeat the first test fewer times. And the
multilingual group actually got faster at answering
as the tests got harder.
It was also found that the brain activity of
multilingual people was similar to that of bilingual
people — but for multilingual people the activity
was much faster.
Study co-author Kuniyoshi L. Sakai of the
University of Tokyo said the results show that
multilingual people are better at learning a new
language than those who are only bilingual.
EXERCISE 3: QUESTIONS
1. How many people took part in the study?
2. What was the study participants’ native
language?
3. How many tests were the participants given?
EXERCISE 4: DISCUSSION
1) What are your thoughts on the findings of this
study?
2) Are many of your friends or family bilingual?
3) Do you know anyone who speaks more than
two languages?
4) What languages would you like to be fluent in?
Why?
5) Are there any languages that you started
learning but didn’t continue with?
EXERCISE 5: FURTHER DISCUSSION
1. When did you start learning English? Did you
find it fun at first?
2. Do you think all children should learn a second
language in school? Why? Why not?
3. What would you say is the best thing about
being able to speak two languages?
4. What would you say are the most useful
languages to know?
5. Language is the only thing worth knowing
even poorly. -Kato Lomb. What do you make
of this statement?

JAPAN TO GIVE UKRAINE $5.5 BILLION IN NEW AID
On February 20, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio
Kishida announced $5.5 billion — or around 740
billion yen — in new financial aid for Ukraine.
Speaking in Tokyo, Kishida said Ukraine still suffers
under the Russian invasion and its people need
help to rebuild their daily lives, as well as the
country's infrastructure that's been badly damaged
by Russian attacks.
As this year's president of the Group of Seven,
Kishida will host an online summit that will be
joined by Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
on Febuary 24 — the first anniversary of the
Russian invasion of Ukraine. This will be the first
time that Kishida hosts a G-7 summit.
Japan has joined the United States and European
nations in sanctioning Russia over its invasion
while also providing economic support for Ukraine.
Japan was quick to react to Russia's invasion
because it fears the possible influence of the war
in East Asia, where China has grown more assertive,
increasing tensions with Taiwan — which Beijing
considers to be Chinese territory.
In his speech, Kishida said he made the decision
because of a "strong concern that [today's]
Ukraine may be tomorrow's East Asia."
Kishida said Russia's invasion is not just an issue
for Europe, describing it as "a challenge to the
rules and principles of the entire international
community.”
Japan has provided loans of more than 70 billion
yen — or $520 million — to Ukraine in emergency
economic aid. The country has also accepted more
than 2,000 Ukrainian refugees and provided
support for accommodation, jobs and education.
EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION
1) What are your thoughts on Japan’s new financial aid
for Ukraine?
2) Would you agree that the Russian invasion is not just
an issue for Europe?
3) Do you have any concerns about China’s growing
influence in East Asia?
4) Do you think a large-scale conflict in East Asia is likely
in the near future?
5) Would you be willing to join the military if your
country was attacked?
EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION
Explain the following quotations from the war.
1. The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride. By:
Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
2. The world will not be destroyed by those who do
evil… but by those who watch them without doing
anything. - Sergiy Kyslytsya.
3. One year into this war, Putin no longer doubts the
strength of our coalition. -Joe Biden
4. If Russia stops the special military operation without
achieving victory, Russia will disappear; it will be torn
to pieces. -Dmitry Medvedev.

HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER
EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the
following vocabulary terms below.
1) Resume - a document that describes a person’s
education, previous jobs, etc.
2) Cover Letter - a letter sent when applying for a job
that explains why you are a good candidate.
3) Proofread - to read and correct a piece of writing.
4) Land - to be successful in getting or achieving
something
5) Ideal - the best possible or perfect
6) Stand Out - to be different, better, or more
noticeable than others.
EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING
HOW TO WRITE A GREAT COVER LETTER
When applying for a job, a strong cover letter can
really help your application stand out. Here's some
cover letter advice to help you land your dream job.
Do Your Research
Find out about the company's customers,
competitors and work culture. You should also
know which skills are needed for the job. You can
then use this information to show how your skills
will be useful, and why you're the perfect choice
for the company.
Keep It Short
Your cover letter shouldn’t be longer than one
page, and around half a page is ideal.
The letter should have about three
paragraphs. The first should explain why you're
interested in the job and how you heard about
it. The second should say why you're right for the
job, and give examples of your past experience.
In the final paragraph, give your contact
information and thank the reader for their time.
Be Original
It's a good idea to write a new or updated cover
letter for each job that you apply for. You should
also avoid clichés like, "I'm a team player," or "I
think outside the box" — many other applicants
will have written the same thing.
Proofread
Always proofread your cover letter before you
send it. There may be hundreds of cover letters
being sent in for the same job, so even a small
mistake can make you look bad compared to
everyone else.
Look for grammar and spelling mistakes and check
the company's information so that any names you
use are correct. Consider asking a friend or family
member to read it too.
EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION
1. When was the last time you applied for a job?
2. If you were writing a cover letter, would you ask
someone to help?
3. When was the last time you updated your resume?
4. How did you find your current job? (If any) Just write
None if you don’t have one. Please share your story.
5. If you land on your dream job years from now will
you use Linked In or any other professional
networking sites? Explain.
EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION
1) What’s the most enjoyable job you’ve ever had?
2) If you could work for any company in the world,
which would you choose?
3) How do you usually prepare for job interviews?
4) Do you think you’d enjoy conducting job interviews?
Why? Why not?
5) What qualities would you look for if you were hiring
someone?

TITLE: OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY ADDS 1,400
NEW WORDS
EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the
following vocabulary terms below.
1. Debate - a formal discussion in which different
opinions are presented; an argument about a
particular topic involving many people.
2. Abrreviation - a version of a word or phrase that has
been reduced in length.
3. Approval - the feeling that something is good or
acceptable.
4. Idiot - a very unintelligent person
5. Insult - words or actions that offend someone
6. Relevant - appropriate or connected to a particular
subject, situation, etc.
EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING
This year, 1,400 words and phrases have been
added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) or
have had their definitions updated. Among the
newest words are “fam,” “upvote,” and “idiocracy,”
showing how much social media and politics have
influenced the English language.
Many of the 'new' words are already in use. For
example, “areligious” is an adjective meaning “not
influenced by or practicing religion”, and “dine-in”
describes food that is eaten in a restaurant, as
opposed to take-out food.
However, some of the new words are less common
and have led to serious debates online. These
include “fam,” which is short for family, and
“updation,” which OED defines as “the act of
updating something.”
OED says “fam” has been used as an abbreviation
for family since the 16th century, but it is now
used to refer to a person's group of friends. This
word is mostly used on social media, where some
users call their followers as “fam.” For this reason,
some say that it’s too uncommon for the dictionary.
Similarly, several Twitter users have asked OED to
delete “updation,” saying it’s “unnecessary” or
that they’ve “never heard it before.” But others
have noted that the word is common among
computer workers in India.
Other new, computer-related words include
“upvote” and “laggy.” To upvote is to show
approval of something online, such as clicking the
“like” button on Facebook. Laggy is an adjective
meaning “slow to respond,” as in “My computer
has been pretty laggy lately.”
Several political words also made the list. One of
the most interesting is “idiocracy,” which means “a
government formed by idiots.” The word was used
to describe an actual government in the 2006
movie Idiocracy, but it’s now used as an insult.
On average, about 5,400 English words are
invented every year, according to the Global
Language Monitor. But only about 1,000 of them
are added to the dictionary. And only some of
those make it into everyday language.
New words can be created, borrowed, or they may
come from other words; but to survive, a word
must be both popular and relevant.
EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION
1) Which of the words featured in the article do you
find the most interesting? Why?
2) Do you find it surprising that over 5,000 English
words are invented every year? Why? Why not?
3) Which of the words featured in the article do you
imagine will still be popular and relevant 10 years
from now? Why?
4) Have any words become popular in your language
recently? If so, do you ever use them?
5) If you were to add one word from your language to
English, which would it be and why?
EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION
1. Are there many words in your language that have
been borrowed from English? Please explain your
answer.
2. Are there any English words that you think should be
adopted into your language? If so, which ones and
why?
3. Do you think you’d enjoy working as a dictionary
editor? Why? Why Not?
4. Which dictionary do you mainly use to look up
English words? Why?
5. Have you ever read a dictionary from start to finish?
If so, what made you want to do this? If not, would
you like to?
EXERCISE 5: QUOTES - Kindly Explain.
1) Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you
where its people come from and where they are
going.
2) The limits of my language means the limits of my
world.

EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING
Google has created a new free-to-use tool
designed to help people prepare for job
interviews.
The system, called Interview Warmup, is
powered by artificial intelligence (AI), and
creates interview test questions related to jobs
in the technology industry. These include
information technology and support, project
management, data analytics and online sales
and marketing.
Users first choose the field they are interested
in for a practice interview. They are then asked
a series of questions, which they can answer
by typing or speaking into a microphone. If the
user speaks their answers into a microphone,
the system automatically turns what they have
said into written words.
According to Google, there are three main
types of questions: background, which cover
the user's education and work experience;
situational, which are about how the user
would respond to certain scenarios; and
technical, which are about skills that the user
might need to perform the job they are being
interviewed for.
The system uses AI technology to analyze the
user's answers and suggests ways to improve
them. For example, it can tell the user if they
are using too many or too few terms that are
related to the specific job they are applying for,
and whether this will help or hurt their
chances at getting the job.
Jasmin Rubinovitz, who helped create the
Interview Warmup tool, explained in a video
that there are currently more than 1.3 million
job openings in the US for high-paying
technology jobs across several different fields.
"We found that the one thing [job seekers] had
a hard time with was interviewing," Rubinovitz
said. So we tried to think: could we use
machine learning and large language models to
build a tool to help you practice for a job
interview?" she added.
EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION
1) What are your thoughts on Interview Warmup?
2) How do you usually prepare for interviews?
Have you ever done a practice interview?
3) Have you ever helped someone prepare for a
job interview?
4) Why do you think so many job seekers find
interviewing difficult?
5) Are there a lot of job opportunities in your
industry at the moment?
EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION
1. Do you remember your first job interview? What
was it like?
2. When did you start your current job? Were you
happy with your interview for it?
3. Have you ever interviewed someone? If so, how
did you find it? If not, do you think you’d be
good at it?
4. If you were an employer, what qualities would
you look for in applicants?
5. One important key to success is self-confidence.
An important key to self-confidence is
preparation. Do you agree?

News Activity of College Students in Cebu City

  • 1. SOCIO 101 - THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD PRELIM TOPIC: THE GLOBAL ECONOMY Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ TITLE: JAPAN TO EXTEND NUCLEAR REACTOR LIFE BEYOND 60 YEARS Date: February 20, 2023 Daily News EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1. Reactor - a device or structure used in the production of nuclear energy. 2. Transformation - a major or complete change in appearance, structure, etc. 3. Inclusion - the action or state of including or being included in something. 4. Secure - to successfully get something, especially with great difficulty. 5. Maximize - to make as large or as great as possible, or make the best use of 6. Generation - one stage or step in the development of a particular product or technology EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING The Japanese government has formally approved a plan to continue using nuclear reactors after their current 60-year usage limit. The new energy policy, which was officially approved on February 10, 2023, also allows for old reactors to be replaced with new ones. The new plans are part of the government's general energy policy, which it has called "GX" — or "Green Transformation." This policy includes the increased use of nuclear power and renewable energy sources, as well as energy conservation, to create a stable energy supply, promote economic growth, and address the problem of climate change. The inclusion of nuclear power in the plans is a major change in policy for the government, which had previously said it did not plan to replace old reactors or build new ones. After the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, public feeling in Japan turned against nuclear power, and the government's policy was to reduce its use. However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 dramatically changed the world's energy situation. The rising price of energy has made securing a stable supply of energy a global challenge. Japan's answer is to move away from fossil fuels and maximize the use of nuclear power and renewable energy sources. The government's goal is for 20-22% of the nation's energy to come from nuclear power by 2030, up from 6.5% in October 2022. The figure was 25% before the Fukushima accident. Reaching the 2030 goal will involve restarting nuclear reactors that were shut down after 2011, and developing and building new, next-generation nuclear reactors, which it is believed will be safer. Public feeling may now be with the government. A Jiji Press survey in July 2022 found that nearly 50% of the Japanese public supported the restart of nuclear reactors if their safety had been confirmed. This was compared to 27.9% who were against it, and 23.8% who said they had no opinion or did not know. EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION 1) What are your thoughts on Japan’s “Green Transformation”? 2) Do you find it surprising that the Japanese government has changed its nuclear energy policy? 3) What do you make of the fact that nearly 50% of the Japanese public support restarting nuclear reactors? 4) How have energy prices changed where you live in recent months? 5) Has your town or city experienced any energy supply issues lately?? EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION 1. Do you take any steps to save power at home? 2. What renewable energy sources is your country investing in? 3. Would you say that your government is doing enough to fight climate change? 4. Do you think fossil fuels will be phased out completely within your lifetime? 5. The nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy. -Barack Obama. What do you make of this statement? #FTD
  • 2. NGEC 5 - PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION PRELIM TOPIC: VARIETIES AND REGISTERS OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ TITLE - STUDY: MULTILINGUAL PEOPLE LEARN NEW LANGUAGES FASTER Date: June 18, 2021 Daily News EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1) Multilingual - able to speak more than two languages. 2) Measure - to find the size, amount, speed, etc. Of something 3) Activity - busy or energetic action or movement 4) Increasingly - to a greater extent 5) Identify - to find out or know who or what someone or something is 6) Repeatedly - multiple times EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING A study has found that multilingual people find it easier to learn new languages than people who are bilingual. Researchers measured the brain activity of 21 bilingual people and 28 multilingual people as they tried to identify words and sentences in the Kazakh language, which none of them spoke. All participants in the study spoke Japanese as their first language and English as their second. Most of the multilingual participants spoke Spanish as their third language — and some knew up to five languages. The researchers taught the participants the rules of the Kazakh language. They then gave participants four increasingly difficult tests to find out if they could identify words they had learned and make sure they were used correctly in sentences. While participants were taking the tests, researchers measured their brain activity. Participants could take each test repeatedly until they passed it and moved on to the next one. It was found that multilingual participants who were stronger in their second and third languages had to repeat the first test fewer times. And the multilingual group actually got faster at answering as the tests got harder. It was also found that the brain activity of multilingual people was similar to that of bilingual people — but for multilingual people the activity was much faster. Study co-author Kuniyoshi L. Sakai of the University of Tokyo said the results show that multilingual people are better at learning a new language than those who are only bilingual. EXERCISE 3: QUESTIONS 1. How many people took part in the study? 2. What was the study participants’ native language? 3. How many tests were the participants given? EXERCISE 4: DISCUSSION 1) What are your thoughts on the findings of this study? 2) Are many of your friends or family bilingual? 3) Do you know anyone who speaks more than two languages? 4) What languages would you like to be fluent in? Why? 5) Are there any languages that you started learning but didn’t continue with? EXERCISE 5: FURTHER DISCUSSION 1. When did you start learning English? Did you find it fun at first? 2. Do you think all children should learn a second language in school? Why? Why not? 3. What would you say is the best thing about being able to speak two languages? 4. What would you say are the most useful languages to know? 5. Language is the only thing worth knowing even poorly. -Kato Lomb. What do you make of this statement? #FTD

SOCIO 101 - THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD MIDTERM TOPIC: WORLD OF REGIONS Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ TITLE: JAPAN TO GIVE UKRAINE $5.5 BILLION IN NEW AID EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1. Sanction - to force a punishment, restriction, etc. On a person or thing. 2. Assertive - having the ability to express your opinions or desires in a confident and forceful way. 3. Invasion - an act of entering a country or region with an army. 4. Territory - an area that is controlled by a particular country, group. Etc. 5. Summit - a gathering of leaders of different countries or organizations. 6. Tension - a difficult, uncomfortable, or hostile state or relationship EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING JAPAN TO GIVE UKRAINE $5.5 BILLION IN NEW AID On February 20, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced $5.5 billion — or around 740 billion yen — in new financial aid for Ukraine. Speaking in Tokyo, Kishida said Ukraine still suffers under the Russian invasion and its people need help to rebuild their daily lives, as well as the country's infrastructure that's been badly damaged by Russian attacks. As this year's president of the Group of Seven, Kishida will host an online summit that will be joined by Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Febuary 24 — the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This will be the first time that Kishida hosts a G-7 summit. Japan has joined the United States and European nations in sanctioning Russia over its invasion while also providing economic support for Ukraine. Japan was quick to react to Russia's invasion because it fears the possible influence of the war in East Asia, where China has grown more assertive, increasing tensions with Taiwan — which Beijing considers to be Chinese territory. In his speech, Kishida said he made the decision because of a "strong concern that [today's] Ukraine may be tomorrow's East Asia." Kishida said Russia's invasion is not just an issue for Europe, describing it as "a challenge to the rules and principles of the entire international community.” Japan has provided loans of more than 70 billion yen — or $520 million — to Ukraine in emergency economic aid. The country has also accepted more than 2,000 Ukrainian refugees and provided support for accommodation, jobs and education. EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION 1) What are your thoughts on Japan’s new financial aid for Ukraine? 2) Would you agree that the Russian invasion is not just an issue for Europe? 3) Do you have any concerns about China’s growing influence in East Asia? 4) Do you think a large-scale conflict in East Asia is likely in the near future? 5) Would you be willing to join the military if your country was attacked? EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION Explain the following quotations from the war. 1. The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride. By: Volodymyr Zelenskyy. 2. The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil… but by those who watch them without doing anything. - Sergiy Kyslytsya. 3. One year into this war, Putin no longer doubts the strength of our coalition. -Joe Biden 4. If Russia stops the special military operation without achieving victory, Russia will disappear; it will be torn to pieces. -Dmitry Medvedev. #FTD
  • 4. NGEC 5 - PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION MIDTERM TOPIC: RESUME, COVER LETTER, AND JOB INTERVIEW Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1) Resume - a document that describes a person’s education, previous jobs, etc. 2) Cover Letter - a letter sent when applying for a job that explains why you are a good candidate. 3) Proofread - to read and correct a piece of writing. 4) Land - to be successful in getting or achieving something 5) Ideal - the best possible or perfect 6) Stand Out - to be different, better, or more noticeable than others. EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING HOW TO WRITE A GREAT COVER LETTER When applying for a job, a strong cover letter can really help your application stand out. Here's some cover letter advice to help you land your dream job. Do Your Research Find out about the company's customers, competitors and work culture. You should also know which skills are needed for the job. You can then use this information to show how your skills will be useful, and why you're the perfect choice for the company. Keep It Short Your cover letter shouldn’t be longer than one page, and around half a page is ideal. The letter should have about three paragraphs. The first should explain why you're interested in the job and how you heard about it. The second should say why you're right for the job, and give examples of your past experience. In the final paragraph, give your contact information and thank the reader for their time. Be Original It's a good idea to write a new or updated cover letter for each job that you apply for. You should also avoid clichés like, "I'm a team player," or "I think outside the box" — many other applicants will have written the same thing. Proofread Always proofread your cover letter before you send it. There may be hundreds of cover letters being sent in for the same job, so even a small mistake can make you look bad compared to everyone else. Look for grammar and spelling mistakes and check the company's information so that any names you use are correct. Consider asking a friend or family member to read it too. EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION 1. When was the last time you applied for a job? 2. If you were writing a cover letter, would you ask someone to help? 3. When was the last time you updated your resume? 4. How did you find your current job? (If any) Just write None if you don’t have one. Please share your story. 5. If you land on your dream job years from now will you use Linked In or any other professional networking sites? Explain. EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION 1) What’s the most enjoyable job you’ve ever had? 2) If you could work for any company in the world, which would you choose? 3) How do you usually prepare for job interviews? 4) Do you think you’d enjoy conducting job interviews? Why? Why not? 5) What qualities would you look for if you were hiring someone? #FTD
  • 5. SOCIO 101 - THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD MIDTERM TOPIC: GLOBAL MEDIA & CULTURE Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ TITLE: OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY ADDS 1,400 NEW WORDS EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1. Debate - a formal discussion in which different opinions are presented; an argument about a particular topic involving many people. 2. Abrreviation - a version of a word or phrase that has been reduced in length. 3. Approval - the feeling that something is good or acceptable. 4. Idiot - a very unintelligent person 5. Insult - words or actions that offend someone 6. Relevant - appropriate or connected to a particular subject, situation, etc. EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING This year, 1,400 words and phrases have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) or have had their definitions updated. Among the newest words are “fam,” “upvote,” and “idiocracy,” showing how much social media and politics have influenced the English language. Many of the 'new' words are already in use. For example, “areligious” is an adjective meaning “not influenced by or practicing religion”, and “dine-in” describes food that is eaten in a restaurant, as opposed to take-out food. However, some of the new words are less common and have led to serious debates online. These include “fam,” which is short for family, and “updation,” which OED defines as “the act of updating something.” OED says “fam” has been used as an abbreviation for family since the 16th century, but it is now used to refer to a person's group of friends. This word is mostly used on social media, where some users call their followers as “fam.” For this reason, some say that it’s too uncommon for the dictionary. Similarly, several Twitter users have asked OED to delete “updation,” saying it’s “unnecessary” or that they’ve “never heard it before.” But others have noted that the word is common among computer workers in India. Other new, computer-related words include “upvote” and “laggy.” To upvote is to show approval of something online, such as clicking the “like” button on Facebook. Laggy is an adjective meaning “slow to respond,” as in “My computer has been pretty laggy lately.” Several political words also made the list. One of the most interesting is “idiocracy,” which means “a government formed by idiots.” The word was used to describe an actual government in the 2006 movie Idiocracy, but it’s now used as an insult. On average, about 5,400 English words are invented every year, according to the Global Language Monitor. But only about 1,000 of them are added to the dictionary. And only some of those make it into everyday language. New words can be created, borrowed, or they may come from other words; but to survive, a word must be both popular and relevant. EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION 1) Which of the words featured in the article do you find the most interesting? Why? 2) Do you find it surprising that over 5,000 English words are invented every year? Why? Why not? 3) Which of the words featured in the article do you imagine will still be popular and relevant 10 years from now? Why? 4) Have any words become popular in your language recently? If so, do you ever use them? 5) If you were to add one word from your language to English, which would it be and why? EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION 1. Are there many words in your language that have been borrowed from English? Please explain your answer. 2. Are there any English words that you think should be adopted into your language? If so, which ones and why? 3. Do you think you’d enjoy working as a dictionary editor? Why? Why Not? 4. Which dictionary do you mainly use to look up English words? Why? 5. Have you ever read a dictionary from start to finish? If so, what made you want to do this? If not, would you like to? EXERCISE 5: QUOTES - Kindly Explain. 1) Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going. 2) The limits of my language means the limits of my world.
  • 6. NGEC 5 - PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION MIDTERM TOPIC: JOB INTERVIEW Name: _____________________________________ Schedule: ___________________ Date: __________ TITLE: FREE GOOGLE AI TOOL AIMS TO IMPROVE JOB INTERVIEW SKILLS EXERCISE 1: VOCABULARY - Create a sentence on the following vocabulary terms below. 1. Power - to give something the energy it needs to work 2. Marketing - the activity of advertising products, services, etc. 3. Series - a number of related objects, events, etc. coming one after another 4. Automatically - by itself and with little or no human control 5. Scenario - a possible situation or series of events 6. Analyze - to study or examine something in detail EXERCISE 2: ARTICLE READING Google has created a new free-to-use tool designed to help people prepare for job interviews. The system, called Interview Warmup, is powered by artificial intelligence (AI), and creates interview test questions related to jobs in the technology industry. These include information technology and support, project management, data analytics and online sales and marketing. Users first choose the field they are interested in for a practice interview. They are then asked a series of questions, which they can answer by typing or speaking into a microphone. If the user speaks their answers into a microphone, the system automatically turns what they have said into written words. According to Google, there are three main types of questions: background, which cover the user's education and work experience; situational, which are about how the user would respond to certain scenarios; and technical, which are about skills that the user might need to perform the job they are being interviewed for. The system uses AI technology to analyze the user's answers and suggests ways to improve them. For example, it can tell the user if they are using too many or too few terms that are related to the specific job they are applying for, and whether this will help or hurt their chances at getting the job. Jasmin Rubinovitz, who helped create the Interview Warmup tool, explained in a video that there are currently more than 1.3 million job openings in the US for high-paying technology jobs across several different fields. "We found that the one thing [job seekers] had a hard time with was interviewing," Rubinovitz said. So we tried to think: could we use machine learning and large language models to build a tool to help you practice for a job interview?" she added. EXERCISE 3: DISCUSSION 1) What are your thoughts on Interview Warmup? 2) How do you usually prepare for interviews? Have you ever done a practice interview? 3) Have you ever helped someone prepare for a job interview? 4) Why do you think so many job seekers find interviewing difficult? 5) Are there a lot of job opportunities in your industry at the moment? EXERCISE 4: FURTHER DISCUSSION 1. Do you remember your first job interview? What was it like? 2. When did you start your current job? Were you happy with your interview for it? 3. Have you ever interviewed someone? If so, how did you find it? If not, do you think you’d be good at it? 4. If you were an employer, what qualities would you look for in applicants? 5. One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation. Do you agree?
