Unit 1 – 3 weeks
1. Identify the characteristics which distinguish
between developed and developing states
2. State the factors which classify territories as
small island developing states SIDS
3. Describe the profiles of selected SIDS
4. Analyse the lobbying role played by regional
and international groups for SIDS
1. Review at least three definitions of
developed and developing countries
2. Discuss the factors that help to classify
territories as SIDS e.g. location, size etc.
3. Select a SIDS identify the characteristics
which classify it as such
4. Outline how ONE regional or international
lobby group represents the interests of SIDS
(use the resource at
http://www.sidsnet.org/partnerships/orga
nizations)
 Outline the characteristics of developed and
developing countries in a table and post in
the forum provided
 Summarize the factors which classify
territories as SIDS and post in the forum for
the unit
 Review the support given by lobbying
organizations to SIDS and create a newspaper
article and share in a group wiki.
Unit 2 : 4 weeks
 Assess natural and human related factors
that help to influence climate changes
 Analyse various arguments surrounding the
issue of whether or not climate change is
taking place
 Cite evidence of the vulnerabilities faced by
SIDS as a result of climate change
 Critique steps being taken by SIDS to help
them adapt and respond to climate change.
 Cite evidence of the existence of climate
change
 Identify the indicators of the human
(manmade) and factors which influence
climate change
 Describe the vulnerabilities faced by SIDS as
a result of climate change
 Evaluate at least three steps being taken to
adapt and respond to climate change
 Write an evaluative essay on “The Impact of
Natural and Human Factors of Climate
Change on SIDS” and post in the assignment
dropbox.
Unit 3: 4 weeks
1. Explain the importance of sustainable
development
2. State the challenges faced by SIDS in carrying
out and maintaining sustainable development
practices
3. Assess initiatives taken by national and
regional bodies in promoting sustainable
development in SIDS
 Examine the importance of the concept
“sustainable development”
 Discuss challenges faced by SIDS in carrying
out sustainable development practices
 Assess initiatives taken by national, regional
and international bodies in promoting
sustainable development SIDS
 Outline how best practices and initiatives
have helped SIDS in their quest for
susainability  

Suggest viable solutions for sustainability in
SIDS

Unit 4 – 4 weeks
1. Identify the social issues affecting SIDS
2. Evaluate the causes and effects of social issues
on development of SIDS
3. Propose alternatives solutions to reduce the
effects of negative social issues on development
of SIDS
4. Identify economic issues influencing the
performance of SIDS
5. Evaluate the effects of economic issues on SIDS
economies
6. Assess the strategies for achieving sustainable
development of SIDS economies.
 Examine the causes and effects of social
issues on SIDS
 Discuss alternatives to reduce the effects of
social ills on SIDS
 Discuss the effects of economic issues on the
performance of SIDS economies
 Assess the strategies employed for
achievement of economic sustainability
 In the Commentary on Social Issues wiki
provided, examine selected social issues on
named SIDS
 Critique the strategies for achieving
sustainable economic development in SIDS in
the workshop Economic Issues in SIDS
