Network management required managing devices and their basic functions. Today, multifunctional and virtual devices are common. New device types and services are going to market every day. During this webcast, we discuss network management and flow analysis evolved to keep pace with today’s complicated and dense IT environments. Specifically we’ll discuss managing data centers, changes in WAN technologies and WAN management, and best practices for flow analysis, including where to deploy flow exporters.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) has become a buzzword and file-sharing applications like Kazaa are very popular and account for a lot of Internet traffic nowadays. The emphasis of my talk will be on the evolution of P2P file-sharing and the technology behind the scenes. I also try to give examples how P2P can be used for other applications like Skype. From Mainframe to Microservice: An Introduction to Distributed Systems

An introductory overview of distributed systems—what they are and why they're difficult to build. We explore fundamental ideas and practical concepts in distributed programming. What is the CAP theorem? What is distributed consensus? What are CRDTs? We also look at options for solving the split-brain problem while considering the trade-off of high availability as well as options for scaling shared data.

The CMS online cluster consists of more than 2700 computers, mostly running under Scientific Linux CERN. They run the 15000 application instances responsible for the data acquisition and experiment control in a private network. The high availability of the network and services and the independence from external networks allows their operation around the clock. After testing virtualization, it is being deployed to further enhance high availability while allowing even easier servicing. Due to the ever increasing luminosity provided to CMS by the LHC, the cluster size and software running in it has been evolving to meet the increased demand of performance. Only in the last year, the processing power of the High Level Trigger farm was increased by 50% without disruption to ongoing operations and it is foreseen to continue growing. At the same time, large updates of the running software happen once every two weeks with smaller updates occurring all the time due to the many developers of the different subsystems. The configuration management infrastructure based on quattor has been instrumented accordingly to be flexible and easy to use by the software librarians while still performant and robust. Big parts of the cluster can be reconfigured and failing computers reinstalled in only a few minutes. The monitoring infrastructure is being revamped to increase performance and allow a fine grained and user configurable notification that will allow the final experts to receive the notifications of the problems directly and on demand. Details will be given on the adopted solutions which include the following topics: implementation of the redundant and load balanced network and core IT services; deployment and configuration management infrastructure and its customization; the new monitoring infrastructure; virtualization techniques for redundant services… Special emphasis will be put on the scalable approach allowing to increase the size of the cluster with no administration overhead. Finally, the lessons learnt from the two years of running will be presented together with the prospects for the short and long term upgrades and the new technologies now in the pipeline.

The realization of network softwarization, an overarching buzzword to encompass all software-centric developments from the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) trends, is being enabled through a set of innovations in high-speed data plane design and implementation. Recent efforts include te-architecting the hardware-software interfaces and exposing programmatic interfaces (e.g., OpenFlow), programmable hardware-based pipelines (e.g. Protocol Independent Switch Architecture – PISA) along suitabe programming languages (e.g., P4), and multiple advances on low overhead virtualization and fast packet processing libraries (e.g. DPDK, FD.io) for Linux based general purpose processor platforms. This talk provides an overview of relevant ongoing work and discusses the trade-offs of each design and implementation choice of software-defined dataplanes regarding Programmability, Performance, and Portability.

The main scope of up-gradation to the advanced computer networks is to make the technical advancement in the network management and so managing the traffic control (that is the control plane and data or forwarding plane) while abridging it in the Multi-Controller Domain. SDN refers to the isolation of the network control plane from the forwarding plane, with a control plane overseeing many networking systems. This paper investigates how new improvements in SDN and the programmability of networks can be helpful to abridge tasks, improve dexterity, and encounter new task necessities within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and open networks. These improvised network services across the digital network entail a multi-controller domain. This paper represents the research in SDN and multi-controller domain, aiming at OpenFlow Protocol and its upcoming challenging tasks.

Network-aware Data Management for High Throughput Flows Akamai, Cambridge, ...

As current technology enables faster storage devices and larger interconnect bandwidth, there is a substantial need for novel system design and middleware architecture to address increasing latency, scalability, and throughput requirements. In this talk, I will outline network-aware data management and present solutions based on my past experience in large-scale data migration between remote repositories. I will first describe my experience in the initial evaluation of 100Gbps network as a part of the Advance Network Initiative project. We needed intense fine-tuning in network, storage, and application layers, to take advantage of the higher network capacity. I will introduce a special data movement prototype, successfully tested in one of the first 100Gbps demonstrations, in which applications map memory blocks for remote data, in contrast to the send/receive semantics. Within this scope, I will introduce a flexible network reservation algorithm for on-demand bandwidth guaranteed virtual circuit services. Flexible reservations find best path in a time-dependent dynamic network topology to support predictable application performance. I will then present a data-scheduling model with advance provisioning, in which data movement operations are defined with earliest start and latest completion times. I will conclude my talk with a very brief overview of my other related projects on performance engineering, hyper-converged virtual storage, and optimization in control and data path for virtualized environments.
