A Summary Of Reckitt Benckiser
Reckitt Benckiser is a British multinational company in the consumer goods industry, producing
health, hygiene and home products. Companies in this industry sell low involvement purchase
products and therefore compete on low margins and high sales volumes to survive in the market
(Tarver, 2017). For FMCGs short term activity is of utmost importance followed by long term
solvency and profitability including market value which should be monitored with using financial
ratios.
LIQUIDITY RATIOS
In the consumer goods industry, liquidity ratios are paramount (Tarver, 2017) as they determine
the company s immediate revenue generating activities and consequent ability to meet short
term liabilities. This is measured using Current and Quick Ratios (Appendix 1, a). The industry
has an average Current Ratio of 0.86 TTM (Morningstar, 2017). RB s Current Ratios seem to
have increased from 2015 s 0.57 to 0.63 in 2016 (Appendix 1, a). This means that if RB
liquidates all its Current Assets, they will only be able to cover 57% and 63% of its liabilities
and not the full amount. While there has been an increase in percentage coverage between the
years, RB is still below the industry average and therefore needs to collect back money owed to
them quicker, stop selling inventory on credit or sell off unproductive current assets. For a holistic
view of the RB s liquidity, the Quick Ratio was calculated (Appendix 1, a). By removing Inventory
from the equation, the ratio doesn t take into

What Is William Tell Overture Form
For my classical piece of choice, I chose William Tell Overture which was composed by Gioachino
Rossini. It was first premiered in 1829 and the length of the piece is approximately twelve minutes
but are broken down. For the instrumentation of the piece, there was a piccolo, flute, tow oboes, and
two clarinets, and two bassoons in the windwood. There was four french horns, two trumpets, three
trombones, in brass. Cymbals, triangle, bass drums, and timpani in percussion and a various about
of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses in string. With these selected instruments, Rossini
constructed the piece into four parts.
In the structure of this piece, it is displaying the visual image of the Swiss Alps. In his description

Relationship between Art and Technology in 1960s
Spurred on by exhibitions, industry sponsorship and education programmes, the artists of the 1960s
began to grapple with the space age. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the
world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and
Constructivist precedent. Technologydid not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s
adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the
end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The
negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean
Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely
s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg s Soundings (1968) will be used to
explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which
artist and scientist collaborated.
The technological works of Tinguely can be classified as kinetic due to their incorporation of
mechanical movement. For Pontus HultГ©n the inclusion of movement implied a complete
rejection of the holy values of art , the traditional characteristics of sculpture were abandoned and
kineticism projected sculpture onto a different course. Tinguely, like Rauschenberg, used
technology as a means to question and investigate his society. For the artist of the 1960s
technology was a tool; it offered new

Amelia Earhart Conspiracy Theory
There are many theories on what happened to Amelia Earhart but which ones are true? Nobody

Amelia Earhart was an experienced pilot. she was the first female pilot to fly across the atlantic
ocean. That by itself is a very long flight for back then, but she wanted to step it up by flying across
the whole world. (Crouch) Amelia Earhart disappeared on July 2, 1937. To this day nobody knows

Emirau Island, off Papua New Guinea, seems an unlikely place to find Earhart because it s far
from the spot where her last radio transmissions occurred. Still, a U.S. Navy crew member in
World War II told of being sent to the island and spotting a photo of Earhart tacked up in the hut
of a local man. The photo showed Earhart standing with a Japanese military officer, a missionary
and a young boy. The sailor alerted naval intelligence officers, who allegedly took the photo from
the hut against the owner s wishes. The photo has never been found. Since Emirau Island had been
a haven for Europeans stranded after a shipwreck in 1940, it s likely the photo contained a

The Age Discrimination In Employment Act Of 1967 (ADEA)
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act were
established to protect the rights of American Citizens on their jobs, in schools, and by age. It is
unlawful to discriminate against any person because of their age or disability. Both of the Acts
prevent employers and others small companies from retaliating against individuals who
complained or filed a charge of discrimination. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of
1967 (ADEA) is a federal law that protects workers and job applicants age 40 and over from age
based discrimination in all aspects of employment, (AARP, 2014). With this act it makes it difficult
to retaliate against a person because he/she complained about discrimination on the job.

Examples Of Evil In Black Friday
Walmart is an example of a significant event that was the result of evil. The members who work
at Walmart seem to make it like a friendly place and nothing will go wrong, yet the most unique
people with awkward traits decide to go there, making it chaotic. Moreover, when Black Friday
occurs, there is violence occurring all over the stores just to get what these shoppers desire,
causing an abundant amount of severe injuries as a result of the chaotic state of mind.
Specifically, people are fighting each other just to get a TV or an Xbox causing unorganization

those people want what they desire most, as in this case meat or a signal fire. With these

The Terms Of A Contract
The terms of a contract refer to the obligations of the parties entering into the contract. These terms
are the contents of the contract, which determine the parties rights and obligations. Consequently,
the law classifies the terms in two ways. Firstly, the law can look at the terms according to the
consequences of breach involving the nature of each term as a condition, warranty or innominate.
Secondly, they may investigate the method through which the terms got into the contract,
explicitly or implicitly. Courts have the option to examine these two methods to reach an
understanding of the obligations of each party in the contract breached by one party. In reference
to the first method, this essay will focus on the ability of implicit terms to enter into a contract.
An implicit term is not expressly agreed to by the parties, but nevertheless are either read into the
contract or arise from other sources of law. To clarify, parties may not have expressly included the
term due to forgetfulness, previous contract with the party or because it may have been obvious
due to the parties presence in the same trade. If the parties do not include a term, the court can
imply a term for business efficacy. This is done in order to make a contract work. Accordingly, the
court aims to make valid the intention of the parties. The Moorcock (1889) involved a term not
included, but of such an obvious nature that the parties did not think to include it in the contractual
terms. Subsequently,

Desmond Tutu Statement On Oppression
Humanity has always oppressed and discriminated against one another since the beginning of time.
Never at a point in history has everyone been completely equal in their civil rights and treatment.
Whether the discrimination stems from the color of one s skin to their religious beliefs to anything
that separates them from the larger population, a target has been placed upon them for others to
attack. In this paper I will investigate how Desmond Tutus statement on oppression relates to
primary texts that I viewed during the course of this semester.
As Desmond Tutu stated, If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of
the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral,
the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. (1984) This example has been illustrated in human
treatment of one another since the start of recorded history. Those who are viewed as different
were persecuted in a variety of ways such as Perpetua being imprisoned and sentenced to death for
her religious beliefs to that of Martin Luther King Jr. who was murdered due to his advocating of
equal rights for all. Neutrality in situations of injustice helps nobody but the oppressor

The Effects Of Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho In The Horror...
The Effects of Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho in the Horror Film Genre
Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho is one of the foundational films in cinema, especially in the horror
genre. The film set new box office records around the world and received 4 OSCAR nominations.
The movie is characterized by plot simplicity, a small cast, new effects, and a handful of locations.
In the plot, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals 40,000 dollars from her employer to spend it with
her boyfriend and ends up in an isolated motel where she meets the proprietor, Norman Bates, who
ushers her in a friendly way. The young woman is later brutally murdered without an explanation,
turning the film into a mystery. The subsequent events indicate that Norman has been hiding a most
bizarre secret. A secret that, at the time, no one watching the film would have guessed. Since its
release in 1960, the movie has had a significant influence on film making and audiences alike.
Psycho changed the way movies worked by owning up to the notion that rather than existing as a
dream to be inhabited, movies are a game to be played. This paper will demonstrate just how
profoundly the movie Psycho has affected the film industry.
Tactical Changes in Video Production

The Importance Of Health Assessment
Health assessment is important for both the patient and the nurse as it helps draw the baseline of
the healthcare that the patient is to receive (Jeanfreau et al., 2010). The aim of this assessment
piece is gain an understanding on the purpose of health assessment in a healthcare setting and how,
depending on the age of a client, it will be conducted differently. In this essay, the following will be
included, definition of the term, health assessment, a brief description on the major components of
a health assessment; the purpose of a health assessment from a nursing perspective; and a
discussion on how a health assessment might be conducted differently for a child in a community
setting (i.e., General practice or well baby clinic) and an elderly person in an aged care facility.
Health assessment is a key component of nursing practice used to make judgement about the health
status and life processes of individuals, families and communities (The Royal Children s Hospital
Melbourne (TRCHM), 2014). The utilisation of health assessment is a very valuable and efficient
way of determining the differential diagnosis of both acute and chronic health alterations in patients
(Jeanfreau et al., 2010). Further stated in The Journal of Nursing Practitioners (2010), health
assessment has a systematic method of collecting data through the use of: health and physical
assessment; risk assessments (behavioural and environmental); developmental, educational, and
functional assessment;

Rhetorical Analysis Deborah Tannen
In this excerpt, Deborah Tannen speaks anecdotally about her observations of behavioral and
communicative differences between boys and girls in peer groups that are sex separate. I m going
to assume she s talking about all boys and all girls schools. Deborah Tannen describes girls as
typically inclined to choose one femalefriend with whom they ll build a strong and exclusive
bond that revolves around secretive conversation. She goes on to generalize boys as being much
more willing to socialize with a broader peer group in the form of playful activities, and to use
those activities to exhibit their skill, verbally express their knowledge, and to establish their rank in
a pecking order.

That s where I become reluctant to recommend Deborah Tannen s teaching strategy. Looking back
on my public education experience I can think of a lot more exceptions to this description of how
boys and girls use language differently than agreements. Again, I m relying on personal
experiences and I can of course also recall instances where men have dominated a classroom
discussion. However, for me to say that all boys dominated girls during classroom discussions in
Phoenix, AZ during the last stretch of the 20th century or that all girls are reluctant to speak
publicly outside of the comfort of their peer group in Honolulu, HI during the beginning of the 21st
century would be disingenuous and could probably be attributed to an expectancy bias.
Could these statements hold true in a different time, culture or geography? Absolutely. My guess
is that none of the cited researchers whose work this article was predicated upon could have
possibly conceived of a world where, new students that are assigned a questionnaire on Alcohol and
Other Drugs , have six categories to choose from under gender . Though, I have been to plenty of
countries that are ostensibly 20 30 years behind our cultural revolutions where segregation is more
prevalent and gender identity is sufficiently binary to benefit from Deborah s

Wanting a pay raise, an employee looked for a method to obtaining a raise without going through
the proper channels, such as their manager. So, instead of discussing the raise with a manager, the

Betrayal. One of the themes in Julius Caesar is betrayal between the group that killed Julius
Caesar and Julius Caesar. For example, Julius Caesar speaks this quote to Antony saying Yond
Cassius has a lean and hungry look;/ He thinks too much: such men are dangerous (Shakespeare).
This explains how Julius Caesar thought that Cassius was doing something bad. This was
significant because Cassius started to form a group of conspirators to betray Julius Caesar, and
Julius Caesar knew that Cassius could do something bad against him, he did not do something
about it because he thought Cassius was his friend, and then Cassius created the group of
conspirators to betray Julius Caesar. The article named Julius Caesar wrote A successful political

An Alcoholic Case By F. Scott Fitzgerald And My Son The...
People might sometimes find themselves in a situation in which there is nothing they can do to
help those who they care about, but they do it against all odds anyway. In both An Alcoholic
Case by F. Scott Fitzgerald and My Son the Murderer by Bernard Malamud, the deuteragonists
are dealing with the effects war had on them: one falling into alcoholism and the other into
depression. Meanwhile the protagonists, the Nurse and Leo respectively, are trying to prevent
them from suffering with no favorable outcome. Although both protagonists were concerned
about the repercussions war had on their respective deuteragonists, they wanted to lessen their
pain for different reasons. Overall, the differences and similarities between these short stories
vary from the unpredictable repercussions war has on people s lives and the despair of not being
able to heal the ones you care about. An Alcoholic Case is the story of a nurse who is assigned
with an alcoholic case. Throughout the story, she struggles to take care of her patient, but at the
same time is worried about his sanity. One comes to realize the cause of the patient s alcoholism
when the narrator states, She knew there were three medals from the war in his jewel box... and

Joseph Mccarthy And The Mccarthy Era
In the United States, the 1950s was a time riddled with heightened political repression due to the
fear of communism. This fear was instilled in the people by the American government, who saw the
growing fondness of communism around the world as a threat to the American way of life. With
Senator Joseph McCarthy as the head of the communist witch hunt, this period in time is often
referred to as the McCarthy Era. The McCarthy Era is marked by unjust accusations of disloyalty to
the United States without consideration for appropriate evidence. During this time, thousands of
American citizens were accused of communism and communist sympathy. Of these thousands, a
particular case stands out amongst the others. This was the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, the
first Americans ever executed for espionage against the United States. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
were a married couple who were accused by the United States government of conspiracy against
America by running the operation of a Soviet spy ring that was leaking information about the
atomic bomb back to the Soviet Union. Although Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were both eventually
convicted as spies, there was little hard evidence ever presented at their trial. However, many co
conspirators testified for the trials, which would eventually lead to their conviction. The Rosenberg
s may have been spies for Soviet Russia, but they were American citizens nonetheless who
deserved a just trial. The Rosenberg s did not have any

Nail Polish Research Papers
There are dozens of brands of nail polish in hundreds of colors and textures. Of these brands
several make the claim to be the fastest drying. However, do all nail polishes dry at the same
speed? Does the brand, texture or even color make a difference in the speed at which a nail
polish dries? It is my belief that polish of a thinner consistency would dry the quickest. Based on
the consistency of the four brands I will be experimenting with, this leads me to believe that Sally
Hansen Insta dri will be the fastest drying nail polish.
What is nail polish? Nail polish is a form of paint that can be applied to fingernails or toenails to
decorate them. All nail polish contains the same basic ingredients: Nitrocellulose, resins and

How Does Liesel Use Irony In The Book Thief
When one thinks of a thief, they think of sneaky men in black masks trying to steal a precious
jewel. However, in The Book Thief the thief is in fact not a man in a black mask but a girl. The
definition of a thief is someone who steals items of important value resulting in negative
consequences for the victim. Instead, in the novel, when the main character, Liesel, steals books,
they have a positive effect on the people that she stole it from and even the people she comes in
contact with. This is why it is ironic that the title of the novel is The Book Thief , because Liesel
in a way isn t really a thief. Throughout the book there are multiple signs that point to the fact that
even though Liesel steals several books, she ameliorates the... Show more content on

Liesel from now on starts stealing books; but is she really stealing them? Throughout the book,
Death says that Liesel is stealing these books, but when examined closely, it seems as if some of
the books she stole weren t really stolen, but rather given to her in an indirect way. During Liesel
s first days as a Hubermann, she gets to meet Ilsa Hermann, the cold and distant wife of the
mayor, who at this point in the book, appears to be another lazy privileged client of Rosa
Hubermann, the hardworking, underprivileged service provider. However, as the book
progresses the importance of Ilsa Hermann increases because of something she possesses.
Books. Ilsa Hermann has a lot of them, so much that it attracted one girl. Liesel Hubermann. The
skinny and orphaned girl who has an obsession for these bundles filled with words, that speak to
her in different ways. Some of these words are evocative; other words are didactic, teaching
Liesel many lessons on how to cope with life. To Liesel, books are as valuable as a diamond is to
a thief. For example, when Liesel and Ilsa meet for the second time, Ilsa invites Liesel into her
mausoleum of a house. What Liesel saw next would have impressed any bibliophile: rows and
rows, stacks and stacks full of one thing. Books. Like a child entering his first candy store, was
Liesel when she entered her first library. Going through her head was probably this one thought.

Canadian Corporate Bonds
Corporate Bonds are the financial instruments through which corporates can raise capital by
borrowing money from investors. In return company pays interest on the principal. And the
principal is returned to the lender after pre determine period also called as maturity. It is more cost
effective to raise money through bonds than through equity. Even if the company is going through a
difficult financial crisis, it still has a legal commitment to pay interest and principal to lenders. Bond
investors have priority over shareholders on the company s properties in case of bankruptcy.
Companies issue bonds for a variety of purposes, including buying new assets, investing in research
and development, refinancing debt, or financing mergers and acquisitions. Corporate bonds are
one of the main products of the fixed income market. These instruments have similar features that
of a bank loan, except that they can be transferrable from one lender (investor) to another, and
can be traded in market which is known as corporate bond market. Trading is performed either on
price or yield basis. Bond usually trades either at premium or at discount to its face value. The

Racist Language In Literature
Racist language within literature is largely controversial, but there are benefits and drawbacks of
using such language within literature. Using racially charged language depicts the historical time
and mindset of people living within a certain time period. Furthermore, it allows readers a chance
to learn about their own culture from the use of racially insensitive language. Though there are
benefits to using such language, there are consequently some drawbacks to allowing the use of
such language. One of the primary drawbacks of allowing the use of racially insensitive language
within literature is that it normalizes the use of such language within the current culture. The
Things They Carried often uses racially insensitive language throughout the story. This language
often comes from the American military and is directed against the Vietnamese. The guy was a
little crazy, for sure, but crazy in a good way, a real daredevil, because he liked the challenge of
it, he liked testing himself, just man against gook (O Brien 44). While this racial slur is extremely
offensive and problematic, it is acceptable to use in the context that this literature is based in
because it is striving to accurately depict a historical time period and the mindset of people living
during that time. Furthermore, the use of this type of language within literature exposes the stains
and issues within one s own culture; especially those of European descent or who classify
themselves as Caucasian.

Wal Mart s fears of cannibalization are unsubstantiated as current online buying trends and patterns
indicate that many customers still prefer to use physical stores. Higher end customers that shop at
Futreshop.com still do majority of their shopping at the physical stores. Regarding the target
segment Walmart.com is trying to reach; recent research indicates that profitability is closely
related to local strategy. (Harvard Business Review, September 2005) Local environments still have
different tastes, business practices, cultural norms and other characteristics. Simply offering
internet connection to those customers may not be enough to create consistent online sales form
them. Local retailers may server these segments better and offer customized services due to their
small customer base. Therefore, Walmart.com is facing two obstacles: local retailers and customer
buying habits. Changing them may prove to be a difficult undertaking. SWOT analysis approach
Strengths: 1.Walmart.com has an alliance with the master of retail process: Wal Mart. Having the
best process and infrastructure when it applies to supply chain is definitely a competitive

The article from The Washington Post informs us that two police officers were shot while sitting
in their squad cars in central Iowa Wednesday morning at 1:06am. They said it was an ambush
style attack. The man involved in the killings was waving a Confederate flag in front of a
school. The police officers asked him to leave the school premises because he was showing
offence to the African American s in that school. He then showed up at a football game and
performed the same actions. His actions were repugnant to the school and the people within the

China s Recent Urban Planning
Study Context and Data Sources
2.1 Beijing s Recent Urban Planning
Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most populous cities in the world. The current
population as of 2014 was over 21 million. The area of Beijing Metropolitan Area (BMA) is
16,410 square kilometers. According to land use dataset of Beijing Institute of City Planning, the
total urban area as of 2012 was 1,675 square kilometers. The BMA currently comprises 16
administrative subdivisions, as presented in Figure 1.
Figure 1 The Beijing Metropolitan Area Since the latest administrative boundary adjustment of
Beijing in 1958, there have been five urban master plans drafted in 1958, 1973, 1982, 1992 and
2004. Each master plan was associated with a planned overall land use map. Individual land parcels
in the map were assigned with a land classification of either urban (residential, commercial,
industrial, public green land, and mixed use land) or non urban (farmland, forestland, and wetland)
(Long, Gu, Han, 2012). The maps guide the future urban development, and actual land uses should
conform to the land classification plan.
Since the beginning of the 1990s, the BMA has experienced an unprecedented increase in
population growth and urban development. By the year 2003, Beijing s population and urban
built up area had already surpassed the capacity set forth in the 1992 2010 Master Plan, seven
years ahead of the plan s scheduled expiration date. To address new challenges and plan for greater

Europe s Gender Pay Gap And The Factors Affecting The Gap
Europe s gender pay gap and the factors affecting the gap
Europe has a significantly wide gender wage gap. In the broader sense, women are paid an average
of 16% less per hour than men in European countries. As a result of this wage gap, women earn
much less than men over their lifetimes. This causes for lower pensions as well as a risk for
poverty once a woman reaches old age. In 2012 alone, 21.7% of women aged 65 and over were at a
high risk for poverty due to their pay. This is significantly less than the 16.3% of men aged 65
and over who were at a high risk for poverty (EU Commission, 2014, p. 2). One of the reasons for
this difference in pay is due to the employment rate in Europe. Looking at European employees
aged 20 64, the employment rate for women is 62.3% and for men is 75%. The main reason for
this is due to the fact that a majority of women are part time employees 31% of women in
Europe work part time in comparison the only 9% of men. As a result, women are less likely to
work full time, higher paying jobs that will allow for them to earn rights for pension, health
benefits, and so much more (EU Commission, 2014, p. 2). Discrimination is an additional factor
that leads to the gender pay gap. Per Beckerian Discrimination, discrimination is defined as the
valuation in the marketplace of personal characteristics of the worker that are unrelated to worker
productivity (Wikipedia). Personal characteristics include physical features such as one s race or
sex,

The Spectroscopy Lab Centralized On The Properties Of Waves
The spectroscopy lab centralized on the properties of waves and they relate to the emission
spectrum, however one must understand the Bohr model of the atom first. The Bohr model for the
atom depicts a planetary like structure, with a positively charged nucleus in the center with small,
negatively charged electrons rotating around in specific, fixed orbits at different distances from the
nucleus. When an electrontransitions from a higher orbital, where it is in its excited state, back
down to a lower orbital where it is relaxed or in its ground state, it emits light. The emitted light is a
result of the electron releasing the previously absorbed energy. It is possible to observe an
electron in one state or another, however an electron never possesses the capability to be observed
in between states. Transitions between states that are closer together, produce a light of lower
energy transitions of a longer distance.
A spectroscope is able to display the emitted light by presenting the bright interference patterns of
the diverse wavelengths which make up the spectrum. By looking through the eyepiece, a spectrum
will appear on either side of the slit the slit starts all of the light waves passing down the tube in
phase so that they arrive at the slits in the diffraction grating at the same time. When wavelengths
are in phase, they create constructive interference, which results in double the amplification, while
wave lengths that are out of phase produce destructive

The Jim Crow Laws
From the end of Reconstruction in 1877 to the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in 1954,
laws were in place that enforced racial segregation (referred to as Jim Crow laws). Beginning in
the late 1870s , Southern state legislatures, which were no longer under the control of freedmen
and carpetbaggers, passed legislation that required whites to be separated from persons of colour
in schools and public transportation, which was anyone who was strongly suspected of black
ancestry. Along with this, the segregation principle extended to theatres, restaurants, cemeteries,
and parks in an attempt to prevent contact between whites and blacks as equal members of
society. At the state and local level, it was codified and in the infamous U.S. Supreme Court case
Plessy v. Ferguson. On June 7, 1892, Homer Plessy bought a first class ticket to Covington at the
Press Street Depot in New Orleans. After telling the conductor that he was a colored man , the
former asked him to move to the coloured car, but the latter refused because he exclaimed that he
was an American citizen and that he intends to ride to Covington. Soon afterward, Plessy was
arrested and dragged off of the train. Four months after his arrest, Plessy s attorneys entered a plea
claiming that Louisiana s Separate Car Act, which Plessy violated, was unconstitutional.
Consequently, this would mean that the court didn t have the jurisdiction to hear or determine all

What Will The People Read My Essay And Application Find...
When I first sat down to start this essay, I asked myself: What will the people reading my essay
and application find most important? Will it be the fact that I ve got strong experience in several
areas of sports media? Will it be the fact that I attend a top 10 public university in the entire
country? Will any of that even matter?
Personally, I believe the most important factor on why someone should receive a job or an
internship or any other opportunity is passion. Anyone can be a great writer, but is that person
willing put in the work daily, write against deadlines and even sometimes receive criticism for
their work? Do they wake up ready to get better each day? Do they wake up with a smile on their
face knowing that they are in their dream job, doing what they love?
If they don t, I certainly do. I believe that my passion is what sets me apart from other candidates.
A former professor of mine once told me a story about a young man who had talent he had never
seen. Everything came so easily to this young man prior to coming into college. This young man
was the star football player at his high school, he talked on camera for the school s morning news
show and he was a good looking guy. The problem? He had no passion for anything he did; rather,
he simply managed to coast through high school doing the bare minimum.
When he got to college, he expected everything to be handed to him. When he was asked to help
with anything, he d say no. He was only interested in being a

I was in English 111 this semester and this is my self assessment on how I did in the class based on
several elements. I will base it off of the four P s: Participation, Performance, Progress, and

reflect on one of my Midterm skills and tell how I improved on it over the semester. I will then
talk about my Overall Skill Development throughout the semester. I feel overall I did decent in
these areas considering I had a lot of personal things going on in my life this semester.

did not do good with being prepared for some of my meeting but there were certain circumstances
that kept me from going and I could not make it. I hope to improve on my attendance and being
prepared for meetings with the teacher in my next English class. I will change this because I do
not need to miss a lot of days in class. I will also be more prepared for my meetings with my
teacher because I need those conferences so the teacher can help me out in the class. Overall I
believe I did pretty fair with this area in the class and will continue to improve on what needs to be
improved next semester.
I will discuss my performance and progress based on two areas of writing in the class. The two
areas I will reflect on are my essay writing and following the MEAL plan in my writing. I believe
that I improved with my essays over the semester with this class. My first couple of essays were
horrible, but my last few essays turned out to be great because I finally got help and more

Cruel Intentions Movie Review
In the film Cruel Intentions, Kathryn Merteuil is portrayed as a manipulative mastermind, who
suffers from the addiction of cocaine. She is prideful of herself on destroying the lives of others
while having the benefit of meeting her own needs. Kathryn comes from a wealthy family. She
portrays herself differently while being in the public eyes; a popular student, a devoted Christian
and a student body president at her prestige s school. She comes off as a lady with moral integrity.
However, Sebastian her stepbrother is the only one who sees past Kathryn s deception and in fact
knows that she s a troublemaker. Throughout the film Kathryn seem have been sufferingfrom a

I believe criterion 1 is met because she believes that she and her brother are two of a kind but

two of the characters who actually commit legal crimes. This is where the title of the play is

Typically, they re loath to introduce wild strains of yeastto their product, because they tend to
impart funky off putting flavors. So when Sebastian Ibarra, an entomologist and instructor at Simon

that his lab partners had isolated a beneficial strain of wild yeast found in wasp intestines, Gsomer
became intrigued.
After all, Humans have experimented with fermentation for thousands of years, and it may be our

about the appeal of alcohol to a broad cross section of the animal kingdom, ranging from fig wasps

The question is, can wild yeast extracted from wasp guts work also wonders for beer and where

and both teams are willing to discuss their forays into flavor with wild yeast at the helm.

Capitalism Is A Social System Essay
For several centuries, capitalism, or more precisely free market capitalism has dominated the
economies of several developing countries around the world. Capitalism, according to the Merriam
Webster dictionary, is defined as an economic system characterized by private or corporate
ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices,
production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free
market ( Capitalism, n.d.). Capitalism is a social system which is based on individual rights in the
free market and is run based on the idea of a laissez faire economy, an economy that is free of
government control and intervention. A capitalist system is operated by private corporations in
business sectors with the main incentive of gaining profits from the free market through the
exchange of consumer goods and services. Therefore, capitalism is generally perceived to allow
for more economic freedom and competition in the market to produce quality consumer goods and
services in exchange of commodities, including wage labour. Generally, as private corporations in
various business sectors gain profits in the market, they can then use a portion of their profits to
contribute towards further building their commodities. This means that the value of labour
increases as workers are provided with higher wages for their labour work.
Thus, overall, free market capitalism supposedly allows for all members of

Fred Lewis Pattee asserted, American short story began in 1819 wit Washington Irving. (Gale

A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters:
I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler,
1824) (Oldstyle 1)
This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature.
He used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in
Chapter 1 of Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader:
When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold
outlines on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless,
they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting
sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2)
This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking
place in the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared
through Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought
life to his non fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his
mother s death Sarah Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic

Why Is Beowulf Be Considered An Epic Hero
Beowulf as an Epic Hero
Beowulf is looked upon as a hero who saved everyone from a vicious demon named Grendel who
killed everyone and anyone he wanted. He would do this by slurping them up and crunching on
their bones. Back when the story was written, the monks were the only one s who could write.
Because of this they hand wrote the book and put some Christian references in it to spread the word
out on the Christian religion. If the book did not have Christian references Beowulf would not be
considered an Epic Hero, and even with the Christian references he still would not be an Epic
Hero. To prove that both codes do not make him and Epic hero there is a list of what the person
should and should not do. According to the Universal Moral code, the list of the negative
statements are do no harm, do not lie, do not steal, do not commit incest and adultery, do not
physically and verbally abuse others, and do not murder . For Beowulf, he commits murder and
physically and verbally abuses others. Beowulf abused Grendel and killed him. According to the
story Beowulf (Gummere), he would boast about how he could kill Grendel with one hand and no
weapon which would be a way of verbal abuse. This proves that he is ... Show more content on

Roof Restoration Cost Essay
How much does modern roof restoration cost in Australia?
At some point in the lifetime of your home you will need to replace the roof. Perhaps it has
succumb to corrosion, has worn out and leaks, or is otherwise too damaged to be patched and
easily repaired. The roof restoration cost can feel daunting but there are a few factors that come
into play that can make a big difference.
Can the roof be cleaned, repaired, or restored instead of fully replaced?
One of the first things you ll want to consider is if the roof can be repaired without needing to be
completely replaced. If you can repair damaged sections vs. replacing the whole roof you ll
certainly save some money. This is one of the great benefits to having a tiled roof. If a section is
damaged it is simple to remove the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If your repair is small they will most likely charge a base amount. When the contractor comes out
they will inspect your roof and will let you know if the damage is repairable. They should give you
a quote if it is or can discuss roofing options with you if the whole building needs to be reroofed.
Other factors that affect cost:
The cost of the modern roof restoration or replacement will also be affected by a number of
aspects including the pitch of your roof, how complex the roof design is, do the gutters and/or
insulation also need to be replaced, how high the roof is, and which type of roofing material you
want to use.
Once some of these factors are considered you can expect the reroofing to cost between $80 and
$120 per square metre. If you have a have with an exceptionally complex design or feature than
the cost will be more. When you discuss this with your contractor make sure you ask them if the
cost includes removal and disposal or the debris from the roof you are replacing. In all cases it
should be included but it is best to double check the quote before signing

Respect Of A Child In The South During The Late 1800 s
Imagine a child in the south, during the late 1800 s. There was certain manners and values that a
child would have been raised with. One of the most important of these values was to respect one s
elders. A child raised in these values would listen to an adult and think that they re right no matter
the circumstance because they are older. Also, a child would have been raised to accept certain
social injustices like slavery. This was mainly because the adults said it was alright. Mark Twain
wanted people to realize the immorality of society during the 1800s. Mark Twain first shows this
with the Widow Douglas and Ms. Watson. Huck listens to Ms. Watson and Widow Douglas
because they are civilized in his elders. He doesn t question the fact

Comparing The Diary Of Lady Murasaki And The Tale Of Genji
Did you know that there was a time where black teeth were considered beautiful? Or that the
stationary a poem was written on was just as important the poem itself? These customs are
showcased in both The Diary of Lady Murasaki and The Tale of Genji, which are both written by
Murasaki Shikibu and set in the Heian periodof Japan. Poetry and story writing were highly valued
art forms during this period, poems were usually printed on beautifully decorated stationary. As for
stories, most of them were written by women and considered classics of the time. Aestheticswere
also highly valued. From the way a ladies hair was done, the color choice of her clothing, the
blackness of her teeth, and makeup. All of these were considered determining factors of status. As
for religion, during this time it was heavily influenced by Buddhism and Shintoism. During the
Heian period a huge emphasis was placed on art, aesthetics, and religion, which is prominently
featured in The Diary of Lady Murasaki and The Tale of Genji. Poetry, music, and art were
considered the most important human accomplishments in this time period , not only was
poetry a valued art form it was also a source of expression. Lovers would use poetry as a means to
communicate their love. These affairs would either be successful or not according to the
sensitivity of the poem and the beauty of the writer s handwriting. This is seen in The Diary of
Lady Murasaki when Murasaki wrote a poem to a dear friend whom she

Lorax
ENDANGERED SPECIES: THE LORAX The Introduction
The Lorax is a story about a man who abused the environment and about what he learned. The
story begins in the most run down part of a dull, gray town. A small boy asks the Once ler to
share the secret of the Lorax and how he was taken away. Thus, the story is told as a flashback as
the Once ler talks about the Lorax and past events.
The Characters:
A. The Once ler, a businessman
B. The Lorax, a leader of the plants and animals
The Once ler s Story: The Beginning
The Once ler moved across the land to his wagon. He came upon a new land with an important
natural resource. (A natural resource is a plant, animal or mineral that can be used by people.)

and he must have industrial progress. Can t shut down and fire 100,000 workers; bad economics.
And he was greedy.
Going Broke
The Once lers business failed. The Once ler started business in a small shop. As more and more
thneeds were made and sold, more workers were needed. That is how a town grew up around the
thneed factory.
What happened to cause the failure of the business?
What happened to the workers and the town after the factory closed?
Lessons to Be Learned
The Once ler learned that he had made a mistake.
What was his mistake?
What makes you think that the Once lers ideas about the use of natural resources changed?
Explain what must happen for the Lorax and his animals to return.
Going in depth:
What analogies and parallels can be made when comparing this story with real life situations?
(Which country do you think Dr. Suess was trying to copy?)
IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS AND ISSUES
Environmental Problems:
You probably noticed changes in the environment as the Once ler went about the business of
making thneeds. You might, for example, remember that the Lorax complained about the smoggy
air caused by the Once ler s factory. The smoggy air is an environmental problem. An environmental
problem occurs when the condition of something or someone in the natural environment is
threatened by a change. The air was clean and fresh before the Once ler s activities; but pollution
made it dirty and smelly. That is, the

A Comparison of Religion in Sir Gawain and Green Knight...
Role of Religion in Sir Gawain and Othello
Respect for religion and government is an important part of any country, but what happens to a
country when these values begin to change? England was beginning to go through this change in
1603 when Othello was written by William Shakespeare. Comparing the religious themes and
heroes of Othello to the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight which was written during the
Middle English era, will demonstrate just how far England had come. Both heroes are clearly
religious, but Gawain maintains his faith until the end, while Othello falls into the snare of
temptation. The spiritual hero of Middle English is quite different from the tragic hero of the
Machiavellian era. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Immediately after this, his prayer is answered, and fittingly he offers his thanks / To Jesus and
Saint Julian (773 74). His ride to the Green Knight s castle is called a holy ride, and he gives honor
to not only Christ, but Mary and Saint Julian as well. He almost comes off as self righteous with
his request from Mary for a place to stay so he could hear mass. He doesn t ask for a place to stay
so he does not have to sleep on his horse, he asks for a place to stay so he can hear mass. He is
not saying a prayer for good luck. It says he prays, with all his might. He really believes that his
prayers will make a difference. He is not the only one because immediately his prayer is answered.
This description demonstrates a religious or spiritual hero who depends on his spirituality to get
him through tough times. This is further supported by the narrative because it appears in this story
that Gawain s prayer pays off.
Religion is addressed extensively in the story of Othello as well. Even though Othello comes from
Africa, a pagan land, he demonstrates Christian faith. For example, when Othello finds that
Montano and Cassio have been fighting he says:
Why, how now ho! From whence ariseth this?
Are we turned Turks, and to

Essay On Triple Jump
From creating a performance profiling sheet for the triple jump I have found out what my two key
qualities that are strengths and three key qualities that are areas for improvement in the triple jump.
Performance profile
My two strengths are my rhythm and avoid wasting my energy; it is important that everyone has a
good rhythm when performing the triple jump this is because as the triple jump consists of 3
phases you will need a good rhythm so you are most likely not to mess it up meaning your score
will not be cancelled. And as you have a good rhythm going you will gain momentum and power,
increasing your jump resulting in a higher score. The reason why... How I could maintain this
strength is by practicing only the 3 phases on a regular basis. From the performance profiling sheet
my discrepancy value for rhythm was 9.
My second strength was using my energy efficiently and effectively. This is important key quality
to have in triple jump because the triple jump consists of many stages and ... Show more content on

triple jump; this is because power is required for an effective long jump take off, resulting in you
jumping further giving you a high score, which other competitors may struggle to beat. To
improve my power in the triple jump I will perform exercises such as squat leaps, this is because it
will develop power in my lower body meaning that my vertical jump will be higher allowing me to
get a higher score in the triple jump. I will perform this exercise with 5 reps and 10 sets. I will also
perform interval sprinting which involves high intensity short distance sprinting for 10 15
seconds which will improve my power, this is because it will increase power in my leg resulting in
also increasing my vertical jump. I will also do these 3 times a week with 30 seconds rest i will

Annie Get Your Gun By Ethel Merman And Ray Middleton
Anything you do, I can do better; I can do anything, better than you , in Annie Get Your Gun
performed by Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton, is one of many examples that are still battled
today on the topic of gender roles playing essentially to modern society. Historically, the
relationship between female and male has almost always been unequal and oppressive; but, a
feminist critic would aim to critique the nature of genderroles. In a feminist theory, it mainly focuses
women s role as well as their social standing in a society. In today s society, women empower
society to promote matriarchy whereas a female becomes the head of the family. Since the
nineteenth century up until today in the twenty first century, society has made assumptions about
female based on their gender. For instance, people often assume that men are strong and women are
weak and that women cannot control their emotions, and that men are better at hunting, and that
women belong in the kitchen. Oftentimes, books and movies can confirm such stereotypes of
males as action heroes and women as housewives; however, through the characters of Katniss and
Peeta in The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins tries to show her readers that these assumptions are
false.
Moreover, Katniss is an individual who breaks away from the typical gender stereotypes that one
would assume while reading. In fact, showing her feminine side to readers, Katniss is simply a
nurturer because of how she takes care of others like Rue and Peeta

  • 2. A Summary Of Reckitt Benckiser Reckitt Benckiser is a British multinational company in the consumer goods industry, producing health, hygiene and home products. Companies in this industry sell low involvement purchase products and therefore compete on low margins and high sales volumes to survive in the market (Tarver, 2017). For FMCGs short term activity is of utmost importance followed by long term solvency and profitability including market value which should be monitored with using financial ratios. LIQUIDITY RATIOS In the consumer goods industry, liquidity ratios are paramount (Tarver, 2017) as they determine the company s immediate revenue generating activities and consequent ability to meet short term liabilities. This is measured using Current and Quick Ratios (Appendix 1, a). The industry has an average Current Ratio of 0.86 TTM (Morningstar, 2017). RB s Current Ratios seem to have increased from 2015 s 0.57 to 0.63 in 2016 (Appendix 1, a). This means that if RB liquidates all its Current Assets, they will only be able to cover 57% and 63% of its liabilities and not the full amount. While there has been an increase in percentage coverage between the years, RB is still below the industry average and therefore needs to collect back money owed to them quicker, stop selling inventory on credit or sell off unproductive current assets. For a holistic view of the RB s liquidity, the Quick Ratio was calculated (Appendix 1, a). By removing Inventory from the equation, the ratio doesn t take into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Relationship between Art and Technology in 1960s Spurred on by exhibitions, industry sponsorship and education programmes, the artists of the 1960s began to grapple with the space age. The launch of Sputnik in 1957 prompted a new interest in the world of the machine, yet the artistic approach to technology differed from the Futurist and Constructivist precedent. Technologydid not hold utopian potential; rather the artists of the 1960s adopted varied approaches, ranging from sheer admiration to fearful pessimism. However, by the end of the 1960s technology became closely associated with the American war effort. The negativity that developed in response resulted in the technological work of artists such as Jean Tinguely and Robert Rauschenberg being pushed aside in favour of Conceptualism. Jean Tinguely s Homage to New York (1960) and Robert Rauschenberg s Soundings (1968) will be used to explore how these particular artists responded to the rising technology, and the extent to which artist and scientist collaborated. The technological works of Tinguely can be classified as kinetic due to their incorporation of mechanical movement. For Pontus HultГ©n the inclusion of movement implied a complete rejection of the holy values of art , the traditional characteristics of sculpture were abandoned and kineticism projected sculpture onto a different course. Tinguely, like Rauschenberg, used technology as a means to question and investigate his society. For the artist of the 1960s technology was a tool; it offered new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Still, a U.S. Navy crew member in World War II told of being sent to the island and spotting a photo of Earhart tacked up in the hut of a local man. The photo showed Earhart standing with a Japanese military officer, a missionary and a young boy. The sailor alerted naval intelligence officers, who allegedly took the photo from the hut against the owner s wishes. The photo has never been found. The Age Discrimination In Employment Act Of 1967 (ADEA) The Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act were established to protect the rights of American Citizens on their jobs, in schools, and by age. It is unlawful to discriminate against any person because of their age or disability. Both of the Acts prevent employers and others small companies from retaliating against individuals who complained or filed a charge of discrimination. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) is a federal law that protects workers and job applicants age 40 and over from age based discrimination in all aspects of employment, (AARP, 2014). • 8. The Terms Of A Contract The terms of a contract refer to the obligations of the parties entering into the contract. These terms are the contents of the contract, which determine the parties rights and obligations. Consequently, the law classifies the terms in two ways. Firstly, the law can look at the terms according to the consequences of breach involving the nature of each term as a condition, warranty or innominate. Secondly, they may investigate the method through which the terms got into the contract, explicitly or implicitly. Courts have the option to examine these two methods to reach an understanding of the obligations of each party in the contract breached by one party. In reference to the first method, this essay will focus on the ability of implicit terms to enter into a contract. An implicit term is not expressly agreed to by the parties, but nevertheless are either read into the contract or arise from other sources of law. To clarify, parties may not have expressly included the term due to forgetfulness, previous contract with the party or because it may have been obvious due to the parties presence in the same trade. If the parties do not include a term, the court can imply a term for business efficacy. This is done in order to make a contract work. Accordingly, the court aims to make valid the intention of the parties. The Moorcock (1889) involved a term not included, but of such an obvious nature that the parties did not think to include it in the contractual terms. Subsequently, ... • 9. Desmond Tutu Statement On Oppression Humanity has always oppressed and discriminated against one another since the beginning of time. Never at a point in history has everyone been completely equal in their civil rights and treatment. Whether the discrimination stems from the color of one s skin to their religious beliefs to anything that separates them from the larger population, a target has been placed upon them for others to attack. In this paper I will investigate how Desmond Tutus statement on oppression relates to primary texts that I viewed during the course of this semester. As Desmond Tutu stated, If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. (1984) This example has been illustrated in human treatment of one another since the start of recorded history. Those who are viewed as different were persecuted in a variety of ways such as Perpetua being imprisoned and sentenced to death for her religious beliefs to that of Martin Luther King Jr. who was murdered due to his advocating of equal rights for all. • 10. The Effects Of Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho In The Horror... The Effects of Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho in the Horror Film Genre Alfred Hitchcock s Psycho is one of the foundational films in cinema, especially in the horror genre. The film set new box office records around the world and received 4 OSCAR nominations. The movie is characterized by plot simplicity, a small cast, new effects, and a handful of locations. In the plot, Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) steals 40,000 dollars from her employer to spend it with her boyfriend and ends up in an isolated motel where she meets the proprietor, Norman Bates, who ushers her in a friendly way. The young woman is later brutally murdered without an explanation, turning the film into a mystery. The subsequent events indicate that Norman has been hiding a most bizarre secret. A secret that, at the time, no one watching the film would have guessed. Since its release in 1960, the movie has had a significant influence on film making and audiences alike. Psycho changed the way movies worked by owning up to the notion that rather than existing as a dream to be inhabited, movies are a game to be played. This paper will demonstrate just how profoundly the movie Psycho has affected the film industry. Tactical Changes in Video Production Firstly, Psycho spearheaded one of the most decisive changes in censorship. Psycho was of movie of many firsts, including the first movie in history to show a toilet flushing on screen. At the time of its production, censorship rules referred to as Motion Picture ... Rhetorical Analysis Deborah Tannen In this excerpt, Deborah Tannen speaks anecdotally about her observations of behavioral and communicative differences between boys and girls in peer groups that are sex separate. I m going to assume she s talking about all boys and all girls schools. Deborah Tannen describes girls as typically inclined to choose one femalefriend with whom they ll build a strong and exclusive bond that revolves around secretive conversation. She goes on to generalize boys as being much more willing to socialize with a broader peer group in the form of playful activities, and to use those activities to exhibit their skill, verbally express their knowledge, and to establish their rank in a pecking order. However, for me to say that all boys dominated girls during classroom discussions in Phoenix, AZ during the last stretch of the 20th century or that all girls are reluctant to speak publicly outside of the comfort of their peer group in Honolulu, HI during the beginning of the 21st century would be disingenuous and could probably be attributed to an expectancy bias. Could these statements hold true in a different time, culture or geography? Absolutely. My guess is that none of the cited researchers whose work this article was predicated upon could have possibly conceived of a world where, new students that are assigned a questionnaire on Alcohol and Other Drugs , have six categories to choose from under gender . Julius Caesar also is extremely focusing on the betrayal of Brutus to his friend Julius Caesar. In Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare uses detail to reveal theme. Betrayal. One of the themes in Julius Caesar is betrayal between the group that killed Julius Caesar and Julius Caesar. For example, Julius Caesar speaks this quote to Antony saying Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;/ He thinks too much: such men are dangerous (Shakespeare). This explains how Julius Caesar thought that Cassius was doing something bad. This was significant because Cassius started to form a group of conspirators to betray Julius Caesar, and Julius Caesar knew that Cassius could do something bad against him, he did not do something about it because he thought Cassius was his friend, and then Cassius created the group of conspirators to betray Julius Caesar. The article named Julius Caesar wrote A successful political and military leader, Caesar returns to Rome triumphantly after defeating the forces of Pompey, but his shrewdness and grandiosity earn the enmity of the prominent nobleman Cassius, who begins plotting against Caesar (Julius Caesar). This quote explains why and how Cassius wanted to betray Julius Caesar. This is significant because Cassius made people think that they needed to kill Caesar because Caesar was a dangerous leader for Rome, and then Cassius convinces people to join to the group of conspirators to ... • 18. An Alcoholic Case By F. Scott Fitzgerald And My Son The... People might sometimes find themselves in a situation in which there is nothing they can do to help those who they care about, but they do it against all odds anyway. In both An Alcoholic Case by F. Scott Fitzgerald and My Son the Murderer by Bernard Malamud, the deuteragonists are dealing with the effects war had on them: one falling into alcoholism and the other into depression. Meanwhile the protagonists, the Nurse and Leo respectively, are trying to prevent them from suffering with no favorable outcome. Although both protagonists were concerned about the repercussions war had on their respective deuteragonists, they wanted to lessen their pain for different reasons. Overall, the differences and similarities between these short stories vary from the unpredictable repercussions war has on people s lives and the despair of not being able to heal the ones you care about. An Alcoholic Case is the story of a nurse who is assigned with an alcoholic case. Throughout the story, she struggles to take care of her patient, but at the same time is worried about his sanity. One comes to realize the cause of the patient s alcoholism when the narrator states, She knew there were three medals from the war in his jewel box... and it becomes clear why the man is suffering so much (Fitzgerald 334). With Senator Joseph McCarthy as the head of the communist witch hunt, this period in time is often referred to as the McCarthy Era. Using racially charged language depicts the historical time and mindset of people living within a certain time period. Furthermore, it allows readers a chance to learn about their own culture from the use of racially insensitive language. Though there are benefits to using such language, there are consequently some drawbacks to allowing the use of such language. One of the primary drawbacks of allowing the use of racially insensitive language within literature is that it normalizes the use of such language within the current culture. • 31. Europe s Gender Pay Gap And The Factors Affecting The Gap Europe s gender pay gap and the factors affecting the gap Europe has a significantly wide gender wage gap. In the broader sense, women are paid an average of 16% less per hour than men in European countries. As a result of this wage gap, women earn much less than men over their lifetimes. This causes for lower pensions as well as a risk for poverty once a woman reaches old age. In 2012 alone, 21.7% of women aged 65 and over were at a high risk for poverty due to their pay. This is significantly less than the 16.3% of men aged 65 and over who were at a high risk for poverty (EU Commission, 2014, p. 2). One of the reasons for this difference in pay is due to the employment rate in Europe. Looking at European employees aged 20 64, the employment rate for women is 62.3% and for men is 75%. The main reason for this is due to the fact that a majority of women are part time employees 31% of women in Europe work part time in comparison the only 9% of men. As a result, women are less likely to work full time, higher paying jobs that will allow for them to earn rights for pension, health benefits, and so much more (EU Commission, 2014, p. 2). Discrimination is an additional factor that leads to the gender pay gap. The Bohr model for the atom depicts a planetary like structure, with a positively charged nucleus in the center with small, negatively charged electrons rotating around in specific, fixed orbits at different distances from the nucleus. When an electrontransitions from a higher orbital, where it is in its excited state, back down to a lower orbital where it is relaxed or in its ground state, it emits light. The emitted light is a result of the electron releasing the previously absorbed energy. It is possible to observe an electron in one state or another, however an electron never possesses the capability to be observed in between states. Transitions between states that are closer together, produce a light of lower energy transitions of a longer distance. For example, at the beginning of the movie, she and her brother are manipulative and conspire to cruel intentions between seduction and betrayal. They made a bet in which Sebastian will seduce a virgin name Annette and if Sebastian fails to do so, he will lose his most valuable possession, his car. And if he succeeds, he would have the pleasure the pleasure to sleep with Kathryn in whom he has wanted since the day their parents married. In the near future, yeast obtained from wasp guts might make the leap from the lab bench to the beer hall. So when Sebastian Ibarra, an entomologist and instructor at Simon Fraser University, approached the chief brewer Condrad Gsomer at BrassNeck Brewery with news that his lab partners had isolated a beneficial strain of wild yeast found in wasp intestines, Gsomer became intrigued. After all, Humans have experimented with fermentation for thousands of years, and it may be our greatest feat since the taming of fire. The discovery of yeast in wasp guts also speaks volumes about the appeal of alcohol to a broad cross section of the animal kingdom, ranging from fig wasps to humans clinking beer steins. The question is, can wild yeast extracted from wasp guts work also wonders for beer and where does that lead? At least two research labs based in North America are investigating this phenomena and both teams are willing to discuss their forays into flavor with wild yeast at the helm. • 40. Capitalism Is A Social System Essay For several centuries, capitalism, or more precisely free market capitalism has dominated the economies of several developing countries around the world. Capitalism, according to the Merriam Webster dictionary, is defined as an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market ( Capitalism, n.d.). Capitalism is a social system which is based on individual rights in the free market and is run based on the idea of a laissez faire economy, an economy that is free of government control and intervention. A capitalist system is operated by private corporations in business sectors with the main incentive of gaining profits from the free market through the exchange of consumer goods and services. Therefore, capitalism is generally perceived to allow for more economic freedom and competition in the market to produce quality consumer goods and services in exchange of commodities, including wage labour. Generally, as private corporations in various business sectors gain profits in the market, they can then use a portion of their profits to contribute towards further building their commodities. This means that the value of labour increases as workers are provided with higher wages for their labour work. Thus, overall, free market capitalism supposedly allows for all members of ... A comment made by Irving himself expressed his feelings towards his characters: I am always at a loss to know how much to believe of my own stories. (From Tales of a Traveler, 1824) (Oldstyle 1) This comment is used to show the significance of Irving s fictional works to American literature. He used styles such as manipulation and imagery to captivate the reader. Imagery such as in Chapter 1 of Rip Van Winkle is enchanting and grabs the reader: When the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their bold outlines on the clear evening sky; but, sometimes, when the rest of the landscape is cloudless, they will gather a hood of gray vapors about their summits, which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will glow and light up like a crown of glory. (Knickerbocker 2) This sentence, alone, shows his technique in which gives to reader a picture of what is taking place in the piece. This style is typical now and is among many that has been brought or shared through Washington Irving s fictional works, as well as his European experiences have brought life to his non fictional pieces. During the seventeen years he spent in Europe (following his mother s death Sarah Sanders Irving) from 1815 to 1832, Irving not only served many diplomatic purposes, but many (of course) literal as well. Why Is Beowulf Be Considered An Epic Hero Beowulf as an Epic Hero Beowulf is looked upon as a hero who saved everyone from a vicious demon named Grendel who killed everyone and anyone he wanted. Historically, the relationship between female and male has almost always been unequal and oppressive; but, a feminist critic would aim to critique the nature of genderroles. In a feminist theory, it mainly focuses women s role as well as their social standing in a society.
