Native Americans used pictographs as a form of non-written communication and record keeping. Pictographs used pictorial symbols to represent people, events, and stories. They were a primary means of recording histories and events for many Native American tribes who did not have written languages. Pictographs appeared on items like buffalo hides, rocks, and tipis to commemorate important information for tribes.

- The rest of us had ancestors that came from somewhere else, Europe, Asia, Africa. Native Americans lived in groups that we sometimes call tribes. They lived throughout the continent from the arctic to the forest to the desert. Native Americans used the natural resouces they found around them.
- They drew their pictographs on hides & bark. Later they used paper they got from European settlers. Other kinds of communication included sign language, smoke signals, signal fires, and mirrors.
- Native Americans kept track of the years in pictographs by making hide drawings called winter counts. They showed the most important thing that happened during the year. Sometimes the pictograph had more than one meaning. A sun symbol could mean the sun, but it is also a symbol of happiness. The pictograph of a bear claw could represent a bear, or it could be a symbol of leadership. Other civilizations and cultures used pictographs as well. The Ancient Egyptians used elaborate pictographs called hieroglyphics, and the Chinese written language has been developed from Ancient Chinese pictographs.
- By reading the pictographs on the tipi, you can tell the history of the family or tribe.
- This was probably used as a robe or blanket by a warrior from the battle shown.
- The name of our state, Iowa, is taken from the Iowa or Ioway Indian tribe.
- Pictographs painted or carved on rocks are called petroglyphs. Petroglyph means writing on rock.
- Winter counts were a history kept by each group. Usually one event per year was painted. This one and the one on the tipi shown were painted from top to bottom. The earliest events are on the top. The winter count on the first slide in this presentation was made in a spiral from the center out.
- This is a page of “translations” from the Delaware tribe (Eastern Woodlands tribe). It is from the end of the 18th century.
