Petroglyphs and pictographs are ancient forms of artwork and symbols carved or painted on rock surfaces that were used by many early cultures worldwide to communicate ideas, express themselves, and represent their culture and tribes. While some date back to 1600 BC, most modern examples have been found in locations around the world, such as Hawaii, China, Arizona, Canada, Africa, and Egypt. Ancient peoples created them for ceremonial and cultural purposes, and many symbols from petroglyphs and pictographs are still used today to represent ideas, groups, concepts, and communicate messages although modern technology has also given rise to new symbols like the Apple logo.
