In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as
hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests
that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities
and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the
physical styles with one chooses to present.
One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated,
rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames
slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties
have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling
slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior,
therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American
community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth
identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is

The reaction time (RT) of students was measured in the experiment to determine whether light or
sound stimulus initiates a quicker response time. The question of whether or not RT was related to
movement time (MT) was also challenged. Each student performed two test in random order; one
testing the reaction time of a red light stimulus, or visual reaction time (VRT); and the other testing
the reaction time of a beeping sound stimulus, or auditory reaction time (ART). The student
completed the VRT trial by simply receiving the stimulus and pressing a button. The student placing
and holding their hand on a button starts the ART trial. Once the student receives the stimulus
(beep) they press the adjacent button as fast as they can. The ART trial does not only include the
data of the RT, but also the data from the MT. Having previous knowledge that light travels faster
than sound; one can predict that VRT is faster than ART. The prediction that MT is independent
upon RT can be made with the thought that there are so many opposing variables that could affect
the MT of an individual unrelated RT such as old age

the big movers in the field of occupational therapy and eating disorder recovery, I felt I was
grasping at nothing. I did actively pursue many authors of papers that focused on OT and ED
but received no response. This was regardless of my mode of communication, zero phone calls
back and emails unresponsive. I decided to change my approach to this and stepped outside of the
field of OT. This is when I found a professional willing to speak with me.
I interviewed Miranda Phelps from Waterville, Maine. Phelps is a clinical psychologist who has
been practicing since 1998. I found the contact information for Phelps through the eating disorder
treatment team directory from the Eating Disorders Association of Maine. We sat down for the
interview on March 2nd at her Waterville office. I chose to pursue this interview with Phelps
because I perceived her to be client centered and she mentioned using various approaches that I am
interested in implementing when I m working with clients that would like to utilize them. These
approaches included reflective listening, narrative therapy and mind body perspectives. Upon
arrival I learned that though Dr. Phelps is on the ED treatment team for the Waterville area, she has
not had much experience in treating individuals with ED but that this was a common thread among
