Essay about bram stokers dracula
Many people are familiar with the novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker. It is typically referred to as a horror
story sure to give a good scare. However, Bram Stoker was not merely out to give his Victorian
audience a thrill ride. Many symbols and themes, particularly those of the main antagonist Dracula,
were brought into the novel to teach a lesson. Oddly enough, Dracula resembles other forces of evil in
other religions as well. A strong comparison exists between Dracula, Satan, and Hindu demons. Of
course these parallels are not fully drawn across the entire novel. Some differences do exist, but the
parallels that are apparent bring attention to a cultures idea of a monster or threatening force to order.
Dracula is the perfect symbol of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This, like Stoker s evil character, also may affect all of humanity.
It is questionable to label Ravana as a chaos monster, although he does create a good amount of local
chaos among his community. Ravana has an established kingdom where all his people are happy.
Ravana also participates in the sanction of marriage. The character Dracula hits to marriage of Mina
being his bride, but this example is more of a perversion of the sanctity of marriage rather than a
sincere commitment. Ravana s wives in the story are happy and fulfilled unlike the undead
companions that Dracula enslaves.
By taking the women of London, Dracula is also taking their purity, a highly regarded trait of the time.
This situation is very similar to the situation between Ravana and Sita, the wife of Rama who Ravana
kidnaps as his own. Throughout Stoker s novel, Mina is the symbol of the perfect Victorian woman
who is pure, monogamous and supporting of her husband as she offers advice when necessary. Sita is
also excellent example purity and a devoted wife as she refuses to succumb to Ravana due to her
everlasting love and loyalty for her husband Rama.
Once Dracula has taken the women in the novel, they slowly morph into lustful vampires themselves.
Lust, in Stoker s time was a horrible trait representing evil. Sex was viewed as sin. Notice how the
characters that follow Dracula, the

Inequality In Plato s Phaedo
Reconstruction
Importantly, one needs to recall that Plato holds the human is a union of two distinct entities body and
soul he considers death to be their separation. In Phaedo, he expressly uses our notion of equality to
illustrate the way in which humans recollect knowledge (as Socrates recollection theory of knowledge
holds). His his argument from recollection posits that the soul immortal.
When we (humans) perceive sensible things that are equal in the world, we see these as deficient in
their equality. (74d 74e)
Equal things (which we perceive) and Equality itself are not the same. (74b 74c)
When we see the deficiency in perceived equality, it prompts us to recollect Equality itself. (74c 74d)
Knowledge of Equality itself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He says these perceptions are deficient, as sensible things suffer from the compresence of opposites
being both F and not F (e.g., equal and unequal) in different respects, or compared to different things.
Plato refers to a stick as an example of a sensible thing. For premise 1, imagine we have three sticks,
the first two are the same length and the third is shorter in length. So, we can say the first two are
equal to one another (in length) and both are not equal to the third stick. Therefore, sticks cannot be
equal full stop, but are equal to one stick and unequal to the other stick. This is the case for all things,
they are both F and not F when compared to different things or objects. Just as Helen of Troy will be
more beautiful compared to some women and less beautiful compared to other women. So, this
deficiency shows there is a distinction between F and F ness, (e.g., equal sticks and Equality itself). In
essence, our perceived knowledge of equal things and objects are distinct from Equality itself, in
premise 2. He says, We say that there is something that is equal. I do not mean a stick equal to a stick
or stone equal to a stone...but something else beyond all of these, the Equal itself.

The Nature Of Fertility And Its Nature
Fertility and its nature has always been a dilemma that societies, cultures, and humans have faced.
Dating all the way back to prehistoric times there have been many remedies that have been conjured
up in order to harness the power of fertility. It is as a life giver, she was identified with the mysterious
powers of procreation and exalted as Mother Earth (Fiero 5). Due to this responsibility, the numerous
female statuettes excavated by archaeologists displayed the vital role that women had in prehistoric
communities. Also, the art suggests the figurines seem to have featured certain aspects of the female
anatomy that were hyperbolized and accentuated. These features were the breasts, glutes, and
abdomen. This presented the major physical changes of woman as she carried another human being in
her whom for nine months. The art suggests how the people used these statuettes and what it meant to
the prehistoric era and its main audience. It shows how primitive these people were with the practice
of sympathetic magic and how it set up an infrastructure, where power was gained over a person,
object, or animal by capturing it visually (Fiero 5). This power enhanced itself as the users or audience
would see the power as homeopathic almost like how wearing Air Jordans will give one the ability to
play like Michael Jordan the same theory applied to this. Since, there was such high value and
responsibility for women as caretakers and child bearers this type of idolatry or praise

Organization s Internal Control Integrated Framework
The Committee of Sponsoring Organization s Internal Control Integrated Framework is a study that
establishes a common definition of internal control so as to meet the needs of various parties and it
provides a standard in which organizations can use to assess their control systems and determine if
and how to improve them. Since internal control is a process and addresses the achievement of
objectives, not all controls are relevant to an audit; the controls that may affect the reliability of
financial reporting are relevant to an audit.
In order for an audit of internal control to be performed in accordance with PCAOB requirements, the
auditors overall approach should consist of five stages. The first stage is the planning of the ... Show

Having a board of directors or audit committee oversee the company s financial reports helps prevent
management override of controls and management fraud, thus aiding in the effectiveness of internal
control.
Risk assessment contributes to effective internal control by allowing management to identify, analyze,
and respond to the variety of risks they re ordinarily faced with, including the risk of material
misstatements in the financial statements. Four factors that can result in increased financial reporting
are personnel changes, the organization grows rapidly, corporate restructurings, and the changing of or
adopting new accounting principles.
The accounting information system has five major objectives. The first one is to identify and record
transactions that are valid. The second one is to describe the transactions with sufficient detail to
permit proper classification of transactions for financial reporting. The third objective is to measure
the value of transactions in such a way that allows their proper monetary value to be recorded in the
financial statements. The fourth objective of the accounting information system is to determine the
time period in which transactions occurred so that they are recorded in the proper accounting period.
The fifth objective is to properly present the transactions and any related disclosures in the financial
statements.
Performance reviews are conducted in order to see where their personnel are

Why Plea Bargains Should Be Taken To Trial
When it comes to trials there is a great deal of uncertainty. There is no way to predict what a jury or
judge will decide. A case that a lawyer thought would go one way could completely turn and do the
opposite. This leads to the question of whether a case should be taken to trial or not. It is because of
this that plea bargaining is often put to use. Plea bargaining is beneficial to the prosecutor as well as
the defense attorney and the defendant. Plea bargains are based upon the mutual interest of all parties
involved and they can occur for a variety of reasons. One reason a plea bargain may occur is because a
prosecutors evidence is not as strong as they would like. Prosecutors want their cases to be as strong
as possible so that they can expect a win. If they are unsure of what the outcome may be, they prefer
to find a way to avoid going to trial. Plea bargains offer prosecutors a speedy conviction without
committing to the necessities of a trial. However, this does not only help the prosecutor. The accused
may find reduced charges, reduced defense costs, and sometimes even a shorter sentence than
originally planned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps the prosecutor knows that he will win the case. If he/she has enough evidence to convict the
defendant it may be that the defense attorney suggests that a plea bargain would be best for his/her
client. Sometimes plea bargains are offered when the defendant releases information about other
crimes they are aware of. In return, they get the possibility of reduced charges that I mentioned earlier.
Once again, the benefits of plea bargains are mutual to everyone involved. While there may be many
different reasons as to why a plea bargain may occur, these are just a few

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are autoimmune disease whose incidence and prevalence are
increasing worldwide. The two major types of IBD are ulcerative colitis (UC), which is limited to the
colonic mucosa, and Crohn disease (CD), which can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract
from the mouth to the anus, involves skip lesions , and is transmural. There is a genetic predisposition
for IBD, and patients with this condition are more prone to the development of malignancy. Although
both UC and CD have distinct pathologic findings, approximately 10 15% of patients cannot be
classified into either type; in such patients, the disease is labeled as indeterminate colitis. Systemic
symptoms are common in IBD and include fever, sweats, malaise, and arthralgias. UC and CD share
many extraintestinal manifestations, although some of these tend to occur more commonly with either
condition. Eye skin mouth joint extraintestinal manifestations (such as oral aphthae, erythema
nodosum, large joint arthritis, and episcleritis) reflect active disease, whereas pyoderma gangrenosum,
primary sclerosing cholangitis, ankylosing spondylitis, uveitis, kidney stones, and gallstones may
occur in quiescent disease. In UC, the inflammation begins in the rectum and extends proximally in an

be taken over by other factors like inflation, competition, etc. . For the growth of GIFC, it is important
for them to develop a mission and vision statement. The mission statement expresses the organization
s purpose while the vision statement describes the organization s long term direction and strategic

use the six stages decision making model.
Their first goal should be to create a reputation of quality and consistency, so the name Papa Joe s

The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence
In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is
understandable that a child s intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect,
popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents believing that simply exposing their child to music
composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997). The claim was founded by
research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be temporarily
enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It
will be argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies
will increase their intelligence. Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool
aged children exposing them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study
showed no empirical evidence that listening to Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior
conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart makes a child smarter also
making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of
other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the
Mozart effect in children. Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used
to assess intelligence between the participants. The portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the
original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning (Rauscher et al, 1993).
Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in
overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as
cultural environment has an influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found
(Weinberg, 1989). Sternberg (2004) found that IQ tests are effective at predicting academic success in
western individuals but are not conclusive measures of overall intelligence or ability to succeed.
Gardner (1999) also proposed that IQ test also

Conquistadors Summary
The reshaping of the New World began the moment Spaniards set foot on the continent. Those first
conquistadors documented their encounters with native peoples, emphasizing their desire to convert
these peoples to Christianity and away from their heathenistic rituals. The documents presented by
Stuart B. Schwartz portray accounts from the perspectives of both the conquerors and the conquered.
His work does not provide much in the way of personal interpretation but rather displays the
documents so the reader can compare better both sides of the New World inhabitants. These
documents present an opportunity to consider moments of heroism, greed, and despair born during the
clashing of Spanish and Nahua cultures and challenge the way historians view such cultures and the
interpretation of primary texts. Schwartz s goal, it would seem, is not to persuade readers of the
accuracy of one source over another but rather to call attention to how personal interests, class and
ethnic biases, and politics influence the interpretation of the conquering of the Aztec empire. Irene
Silverblatt examines the new Spanish lands after Spaniards have established themselves in and
amongst the native peoples. She describes the development of a modern world through the views of
Spanish imperialism and argues that the Inquisition provides such evidence. Using church records,
sermons, and missionary guides, Silverblatt examines how the modern world was build, experienced,
and understood by the

continental drift carried the North American continent westward, tectonic uplift raised the shore line
several hundred feet above the current sea levels. Over time, the river wore through the uplifted

continental shelf was reclaimed by the ocean. As the ocean waters rose, rivers were covered and

What Is The Impact Of Poverty On Children In The United...
One in five children that live in the United States are living in poverty (Sime, 2016). Poverty is the
state of not having enough money to meet one s basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. What
is it like for a child to live in a home with a low income? What effects does it have on children?
Children living in low income homes face more challenges than others. They often have to endure the
pain of not having family members at home when they need them. At times children living in poverty
have to cope with the stress of taking care of themselves as well as their siblings, while trying to
maintain satisfactory grades in school. In this paper I will discuss the impact of poverty on a child s

It was shown that if the mother had depression or anxiety when she was pregnant it may increase the
child s risk of having a mental disability. Child who have mental disabilities are likely to have low self
esteem, impaired cognitive development, and social isolation (Wickman,2017). Many people who live
in poverty do not have a car and have to ride the bus to get to places. They do not have enough money
to have a health diet. In order to eat healthy food they have to get to the store and have enough money
to buy the food. The closest organic store is sometimes miles away. In most areas, the closest eating
places they have are fast food restaurants. Sometimes the nearest hospital is an hour away, and they
cannot get there without a car. In some places, they have is a free health clinic, which does not provide
the same care as a hospital does. The prices of medication are so expensive that without health
insurance, which most do not have, they cannot afford it. If a child has Down syndrome or any disease
that requires tons of money, they will not be able to get the help they need. The buildings and homes
they live in are in poor conditions and are sometimes filled with mold (Mullins, 2013). The buildings
can affect their health and can form new health problems for them. The media tends to turn a blind eye
to the health conditions in areas where there is poverty, until it gets out of control. When the media
broadcasts cases like the Flint, Michigan water crisis, it was not until years later that other parts of the
United States were informed about it. Not only did the media take longer, but the government tended
to act like they are doing all they can when they are not helping. In the Flint case, it was stated that

The Total Rewards Program
Organization Overview
This paper will discuss the total rewards program. This company is a beverage and bottling company
that has been in business for over 100 years. Currently we operate in about 3 continents and in about
20 different countries all over the world. SZT Corp is the home to over 20,000 employees with about
2,000 management level employees worldwide.
Armstrong (2012) affirms that definitions of total rewards characteristically includes not only
traditional, quantifiable elements such as salary, variable pay and benefits but comprises also more
intangible non cash components such as gaining knowledge, ability to acquire and act or take
responsibility, progress in career, and the conducive environment provided by the organization. SZT
Corp requires a pretty complex and flexible total rewards program to meet the needs of their multi
national colleagues. The total rewards programs has to slightly vary for each country that SZT Corp
operates in and must cover compensation, benefits, performance and recognition, learning and
development, and a work life balance. SZT Corp has to maintain a total rewards program that remains
competitive with the competitors in the different nations all over the world.
Total Rewards Strategy
In order to meet the HR needs of this company, HR must accomplish the elements discussed in the
succeeding paragraphs that address the fundamentals of this type of total rewards system while
complying with the regulatory environments.

Green Phytoplankton Research Paper
New studies have shown that the tiny, little sea creatures known as plankton can have a huge impact
on the atmosphere and could even help cool the earth. The Southern Ocean

therefore making it a perfect isolated area for scientists and researchers to study. The new revelation

Green phytoplankton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytoplankton) get their color from chlorophyll,
the chemical that makes plants green as well as lets them absorb sunlight. The byproduct of the

How Rain can cool the Earth
Rain falls when clouds contain so much moisture that they can t hold anymore and force it down to the
ground. While all the moisture is still in the cloud, though, it acts as a sort of deflector for sunlight.
Each individual drop of water that is in a cloud catch the sunlight, and therefore the solar radiation,
and keep it from coming through to the earth. Clouds that are very bright have a lot of moisture in
them that is catching the sunlight and deflecting it back.
This deflection of sunlight, and more importantly the solar radiation, keeps the heat off of the earth.
This breaks up the constant bombarding of heat that comes from the sun that breaks down the
atmosphere. Basically, the more moisture that is up in the clouds, the more that it will cool the earth.
Because green phytoplankton release a chemical that brings more moisture into the clouds, they help
cool the earth by proxy.

Lu Xun And Mrs Dalloway Essay
Both Lu Xun and Virginia Woolf explore alienation as manifested in the growing emotional distance
between people. In Lu Xun s short story Hometown, the narrator finds himself unable to meaningfully
connect with old friends and acquaintances in his hometown, from which he has been away for over
twenty years. Similarly, Mrs. Dalloway by Woolf features characters with rich inner lives who
nevertheless fail to express their feelings with others. Despite the similarity in symptoms, however,
the two authors portray the causes and implications of alienation in disparate ways. While Lu Xun
attributes alienation to a kind of spiritual poverty or mediocrity that can be fought against, Woolf
provides a more nuanced view where alienation results from people attempting to rise above
mediocrity in the first place and is thus almost inescapable. These differing portrayals are reflected in
the solutions prescribed: Lu Xun recommends resistance, whereas Woolf suggests a cheerful
acceptance of the bittersweet tension between the pain of isolation and the ... Show more content on

Lu Xun calls us to take arms against the spiritual poverty that afflicts society and causes alienation.
His prescription is hope. At the end of Hometown, the narrator succeeds in establishing an (albeit
indirect) connection with Runtu, whose superstitious idol worship the narrator realizes is no different
from his own idol of hope (99) expressed in a different way. For Lu Xun, hope is a form of resistance
against the spiritual poverty the characters experience. Even something as simple as hope for the next
generation to have a new life can suffice to create a spiritual foundation for the characters. Only with
such a foundation for their own lives can they then communicate on meaningful terms with one
another. Lu Xun envisions a world where people are united in a collective hope (100). By resisting the
spiritual poverty of society through hope, alienation can be

body of her husband, Walter. Although the relationships these women shared with the dead men were

to as the man . When Laura was standing over Mr. Scott, she still thought of him as a young man and
simply him (Mansfield 2433). Despite Laura s concern over his death, he was still of a lower class
than her and not a part of her upper class world. The cottages around where Mr. Scott and his family
lived were described as disgusting and sordid, and Laura used the word creature (Mansfield 2429)
when referring to the widow and her sister. This suggests that she felt that Mr. Scott and his family
were not thought of as people with names. To Laura they were creatures who

Analysis Of Column 7L
During the initial site walk, cracking was observed on the north corbel of column 7B, as labeled on the
2014 structural drawings for the site. During the renovations in 2014, steel columns were added in the
vicinity of the B line of columns in this area of the structure. Given that these new columns may have
been added to take additional stresses caused by the renovations and/or additions, observation of the
deteriorated conditions of this corbel warranted additional investigation of other corbels in the area.
This was not part of the original scope of work, but TKW has observed and reported on the condition
of some of these corbels as a courtesy to the client.
The first corbels inspected were at column 7B. Both the north and south ... Show more content on

From this position, the northern corbel at column 5B appears to have similar conditions compared to
column 6B. A significant portion of the corbel has fallen off and is lying on top of the CMU wall in
that area (Figure 26). The bearing conditions look similar to column 6B, but exact measurements were
not possible. The condition of the beam bearing on the corbel was not visible, but padding for bearing
can be seen in the location.
At column 4B, the northern corbel has cracked significantly at one corner of the corbel (Figure 27).
The cracked portion is hanging from the corbel by a small section of concrete at the top of the corbel.
Due to spatial constraints, measurements could not be made, but the section of concrete hanging from
the corbel appears to be about ½in thick. Small pieces of concrete were found on the ground in this
area, suggesting that the corbel is slowly deteriorating. Bearing pads appear to be in use on the
southern corbel only, which shows no signs of deterioration.
The northern corbel at column 3B is beginning to crack along one of its corners (Figure 28). Spatial
constraints did not permit actual measurements, but the crack appears to be 0.012in 0.025in wide. Due
to the presence of drywall in the area, it is difficult to gauge the depth of the crack as the attached
drywall could be helping to holding the concrete in place. The southern corbel does not exhibit any
signs of deterioration. Bearing pads appear to be utilized on both corbels.

Masculinity In The Full Monty
The Full Monty The Full Monty, directed by Peter Cattaneo is a 1997 British comedy drama that
brings into question everything that is supposedly known to be true of traditional masculinity. This is
done largely through showing the struggle of unemployed men in Sheffield, England. Going for the
Full Monty: Comedy, Gender, and Power, an essay by Jill Marshall assists in addressing the status quo
breaks presented in the film. Marshall discusses the issues associated with masculinity and how
director Cattaneo uses his comedic artistry to bring to light these important issues. In order to grasp
the entire meaning of this film, reviewing The Full Monty while also looking at Marshalls essay and
her take on the film. When first thinking about masculinity and what we traditionally associate with
masculinity, some of the first adjectives to come to mind are strong, powerful, emotionless, provider.
Males in society are held to a very high standard in being such, and this is immediately challenged at
the beginning of The Full Monty. Each of the main characters is a male who is going through an
identity crisis. Gaz, being unable to provide for his child, Dave being uncomfortable in his body, even
Lomper and Guy s sexuality. This film focuses on these characters working through letting go of what
they are expected to do and being comfortable in a new lifestyle. This struggle of letting go of society
s standards while still clutching them in a comedic fashion carries this film.

Domestic Violence And Social Learning Theory
Social learning theory is described by different environmental factors that s influence the behavioral
response of a person (Bandura, 1965). For example, social learning theory assumes a person bases
their responses through an actual environmental stimuli, such as violence. In addition, when applied to
the domestic violence, social learning theory states the actual act of violence is learned, through role
models, such as parents, siblings or relatives as a natural coping mechanism when conflict is present.
As described in the book (I am not your Victim) the countless abuses that Sam did over Beth was a
form coping mechanism for him to avoid the conflicts around. Sam s initial reaction of violence could

Tactical Training For Medical Responders
Today s society has seen an increase of unpredictable violent events that require an increasing need for
tactical medical responders. While some if not all departments in the United States have a form of
Tactical Emergency Medical Support, in the present time it almost seems as if there is a growing need
for awareness, education, and personnel to have a tactical mindset. Tactical Emergency Medical
Support is an out of hospital EMS system that focuses on medical support for law enforcement special

Gabrielle Norris Reflection
To a sixth grade Gabrielle Norris, talking to an entire school at a pep rally would have been
impossible. To an eighth grade Gabrielle Norris, dressing like a princess and standing on a football
field to be recognized would have been preposterous. As a senior now, I wish I had done the things
that I wanted to do in my intermediate and early secondary school years. I was holding myself back. I
was unhappy because of my circumstance, but did not know how to talk about it. Social anxiety runs
within my family s genetics, but I overcame it with a simple speech that changed my life forever.
I was afraid of people as early as elementary school. My fear was not the usual stranger danger fear. I
would have issues with asking questions and talking, yet I did not know of what I was afraid of. I was
comfortable with seclusion. I eventually became depressed in intermediate school, because I had no
friends. I remained miserable as a child and teenager, until I decided that I needed to change. I wanted
positive and pleasurable memories and longed for my high school experience to be different. ... Show

The Roaring Twenties By F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Roaring Twenties were a time of leisure and parties. The media and events surrounding this time
period greatly impacted the carefree, extravagant lifestyle. This era was one of the most dramatic and
energetic times in American history. To many, the symbols of the roaring Twenties were F. Scott
Fitzgerald and his wife, due to their tales of the young and the wealthy (Hanson 96). The Roaring
Twenties influenced many literary works, throughout the 1920s such as F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great
Gatsby and This Side of Paradise.
At the start of the 1920s, prohibition had just begun, banning the purchase, sale, and manufacture of
alcohol. This actually had adverse effects as people began to make their own alcohol and sell it
illegally (Hanson 96). World War I had also recently ended, and soldiers were coming home to a
recession in the U.S. The end of the war meant a drop in government spending and exports. Business
bankruptcies tripled between 1919 and 1920. Many businesses were forced to cut wages and lay off
workers (McDonnell 296). As the 1920 recession came to an end, Americans had more leisure time
and money to spare (353). By 1922 the economy had fully rebounded and there was even a shortage of
workers (319). World War I fueled the fire of American s suspicions of foreigners (McDonnell 296).
The Red Scare had Americans paralyzed by the fear of a possible communist infiltration (301). Along
with foreign intolerance, racial intolerance broke out due to wartime migration

Essay about The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club
Almost 150 years ago, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., expressed the following sage but sad observation
in his book The Professor at the Breakfast Table : Society is always trying in some way or other to
grind us down to a single flat surface. Unfortunately, this is still true today. Last week I saw the movie
The Breakfast Club written and directed by John Hughes which expressed a similar theme.
Fortunately, youth of every age are quite aware of what they are going through and have the ability to

Sublime In Frankenstein Essay
Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors which
lie beneath the reader s mentality. The term Gothic suggests a genre which deals with frightening and
mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime
experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, …a matter of treatment. The particular form of the
sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in
which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the first Gothic novel written
by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through its physical, transcending

Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, …Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas
of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible
objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime [2] . The critic attempts
to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as
symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s
control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the
Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole
implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto,
attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke
commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar
to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger
connected with it [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is
closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a
sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the overthrow of the Roman
Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to

Requirements Of Requirements And Requirements
Question 1: When writing a requirements document, it is important to understand what it is that you re
writing. Requirements documents must be hierarchical, and also must be consistent. Consistency is
important, because one must be able to follow for whom he is defining requirements. System
requirements vary significantly from stakeholder requirements. As the requirements are written, it is
also important to maintain order along with consistency. If requirements are not ordered very
specifically, it will be easy to lose place of which requirements have already been defined. When
writing requirements statements and sets of requirements statements, one must maintain uniqueness
among each set. Consistency is not enough to disallow requirements from becoming redundant. One
may remain consistent with the hierarchy of the requirements statements, however it is important to
maintain uniqueness. The concept of hierarchy allows for a level of inheritance to be developed. If a
systems engineer finds that he or she is writing redundant requirements, it is important that the SE
evaluates the levels of inheritance. Repeating requirements can be detrimental in a requirements
document for multiple reasons. These requirements take up time and space for one. This document can
be lengthy, but it must be easy to follow and as concise as possible while being thorough. Also, the
level of redundancy in a document predetermines the difficulty of understanding by its reader. As an
extension to

There made its appearance that deadly pestilence, which, whether disseminated by the influences of

These are the lines from Giovanni Boccaccio s magnum opus The Decameron , which consists of

A person, according to the damage, may experience blurriness, nausea and/or vomiting, confusion,

as when a player may receive a minor concussion and recognize the symptoms and goes back into the
game, the symptoms and results worsen significantly. In this case Dr. Fernicola describes Second
Impact Syndrome where the symptoms that may be experienced are such as loss of consciousness
and/or loss of short term memory (Fernicola). Before the mid 1990s the medical field was not as
cautious about concussions as they are today, the treatments and test were primitive. Because of the
lack of knowledge on the issue, this has created many former players not understanding why they are

The Effects Of Thalidomide And Its Effects On Children
Thalidomide Paper Thalidomide is a drug that was invented in Germany in the 1950 s. It was
originally intended to treat respiratory infections but during testing, it was noted that the drug worked
to relieve morning sickness for pregnant women. This new reason allowed the drug to be prescribed to
many new patients all over the world. Eventually Thalidomide was discovered to be causing birth
defects in all of the pregnant women that were taking it. It caused the fetus to not develop correctly by
causing limbs of the body or ears to develop improperly or not develop at all. It also cause spinal cord
and digestive system defects as well as problems to the heart and kidneys. Thalidomide stopped being
prescribed but not before many children and families were affected worldwide who had taken the
drug. It took a couple of years before other countries caught up to realize that thalidomide was causing
the birth defects and removed from being an over the counter drug in many countries. It wasn t until
1961 that it was completely removed after it was confirmed that it was causing birth defects. More
than 10000 babies were born with defects and approximately killed 2000 before birth, but fewer than
100 were born here in the U.S.
Short term effects included possible still born babies, and children with many health problems and
complications that severely impacted their quality of life. How much damage the Thalidomide did to
the fetus depended on how early on the mother took the drug.

guilt and regret, Alas, alas. It s all come out so clearly. Light, let me see the last of you now,
surrounded by those I ought to avoid born from them, living with them, killing them, so as one can see
Oedipus is truly just starting to feel guilty. Throughout the play one notices important things, like how
oedipus feels guilty, but also regretful and painful as it shows here, Ah! Ah! How miserable is my life!
Where does my pain take me? How does my voice rush about me? O doom, how you ve pounced!
Oedipus feels guilty because he murdered Laius, Laius, his own father, his own blood and not to
mention marrying his own mother, his blood. By far one of the most important things in the play (or at
least that s what some may believe) is when all the pieces Oedipus is looking for finally start to fall in
place, Oh, my friend! You are still my only companion, for

Psychodynamic Theories Of Psychology On The Subconscious Self
Psychodynamic theories of psychology focuses on the subconscious self, influencing behaviors of an
individual and are used to explain the development of mental illness and abnormalities. The basis of
psychodynamics is Sigmund Freud s theory in which he describes three states of mind vying for their
preferred goal: the Id concerned with obtaining pleasure, the Superego concerned with upholding
morality, and the Ego which uses reason to balance the desires of the two extremes. Freud describes
three levels of consciousness the conscious which is what ideas we always know about, the
preconscious which is ideas that we can make conscious, and the unconscious which is the ideas that
are underneath our understanding which may include suppressed memories of traumatic events. He
sees human motivation coming from a vague notion of instincts which include the life instinct which
drives people to stimulate themselves/survive and the death instinct which drives people to be calm,
serene, slipping into death. Freud gives great importance to human sexuality in his theories by linking
such dilemmas during the childhood stages of development of the sex instinct to mental problems in
adulthood in the form of subconscious ideas about the past influencing current actions. He sees
defense mechanisms in people s actions as an attempt to protect the person s view of self or to protect
from revealing something they don t want known, certain cues like forgetting what to say reveal that

Artifacts and Creations The most visible level is artifacts and creations. This level of culture is
observable. Artifacts include any visible, verbally or touchable definable elements in an organisation,
such as interior design, decoration, dress code and staff uniform, even speech. All may be visible
standards of culture, but difficult to interpret. Artifacts and creations also may make people know what
a group is achieving. 2. Values and Beliefs Values and beliefs is a level next to visibility. They are the
organisation s stated values and rules of behavior. But they are not directly observable, as behaviors
are. It is how the members represent the organisation both to themselves and to others. This is often
expressed in philosophies and public identity. It can sometimes often be a reflection for the future, of
what the members hope to become. Examples of this would be employee professionalism. Problems
may arise if espoused values by leaders are not in link with the general assumptions of the culture. 3.
Basic Assumptions Basic assumptions is in the deeply core of a culture, it help us to understand a
organisational culture. It is deeply embedded, taken for granted behaviors which is usually
unconscious, but constitute the essence of culture. These assumptions are typically so well integrated
in the office dynamic that they are hard to explain from within. Schein contends

St Brigid Research Paper
St Brigid of Kildare was born in 452 AD. She was a catholic nun who became one of the patron saints
of Ireland. She dedicated her whole life to following Jesus s message; which was to love god, and love
others. She shared this as her own message, through the love and support she gave to others in the
community. Like Jesus she wanted to help the less fortunate and give to those that were in need,
offering them hope and faith. She chose to seek out justice among her community and society,
working around the lives of many. She was inspired by Jesus spirituality, nature and love, that she
wanted to demonstration her appreciation and strength to those who were struggling. For example, she
used her middle class lifestyle to contribute to feeding the poor and nursing those who were injured or
sick. Her childhood was filled with donating her mothers and father s possessions to anyone who
asked (Online, n.d.).
St Brigid impacted all people around her. She inspired greatness to those who needed her compassion
and belief. For her endless time and support, it is suggested that her message transcends time well
beyond her death to the individuals and groups along the years to today. Discussion of her
transcendence will be ruminated throughout this text. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recently I have decided in the next few years to study and become a teacher, which I think in my own
way, that I will be able to connect and help students with educating them of life skills, beliefs and
morals, like what St Brigid and Jesus have done to many in their lives. I would also like to think that
by being a teacher I can have an inspiration to children, to do good in school and follow they passions,
like St Brigid was an inspiration to many throughout centuries. St Brigid is one of the person I inspire
to show the world who I want to

Progression Of Confucianism Essay
The progression of Confucianism Before Confucianism during the Shang dynasty the method of
reasoning was much different than it is today. The practice of oracle bone divination was used to guide
the shang and even though this specific ritual is not practiced much today the Shang did provide the
idea of a mutual relationship between the living and the dead. I believe that most religions leave some
sort of lasting contribution to society and Confucianism s will be both the culture of literate elite as
well as the interdependence required for social harmony. The central confucian texts are The five
classics that were rumored to be written by Confucius himself. Confucianism was sometimes seen as a
philosophy and not a religion, but confucius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However I believe she misinterpreted the next type of friend because she describes this friend as the
forgiving one, in the text it says To make friends with the upright, faithful, with the well informed, is
beneficial (Book 16 Ch.4). I interpreted the second beneficial friend as one who continuously has
faith, in other people and himself. I believe the reason she changed this in her reinterpretation is
because she wants to make Confucianism more appealing and having a faithful friend might not
resonate with people in this modern era due to the decline of religion in general. After researching
Professor Yu Dan I came across an article titled She makes Confucianism cool again just the title
would have me believe that one of her goals is to relate to today s youth this is not necessarily a bad
thing but I do believe that she might have to compromise some teachings in order to present a more
appealing form of

John Mcdonald s Influence On Canadian History
I view the old cover as telling me that Canadian history is made up of many different people and
events. Many different individuals who helped shape Canada today bare the cover, as well as different
objects that represent different events.
Near the top of the textbook, right near the title, there is a British flag. Britain had a gargantuan impact
on Canadian history, as Canada was a British colony and Britain continues to influence Canada today.
For example, in Canada we often use British spelling instead of American spelling, like the words
colour, instead of color, and grey, instead of gray.
To the right of the title is a picture of John A. Macdonald, who was essential to Canadian history. He
was the first prime minister of Canada, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These women represent the part women took in Canadian history. Women did not get the right to vote
in federal elections in Canada until 1918, and the first female to practice medicine did not get licensed
in Canada until 1875. The first female judge in Canada was appointed in 1916, and she faced many
challenges, such as male lawyers stating that, because she was a woman, she was therefore not a
person under the law. It was not until 1929 that women were considered persons .
Underneath the two women are RCMP officers. RCMP stands for Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
When people from foreign countries think of Canada, many think of the RCMP. The RCMP was
founded in 1920, and continues to be a symbol of Canada today.
The last picture on the front cover is of a female nurse. She represents the nurses of World War I.
World War began in 1914, and ended in 1918. A total of 3141 Canadian volunteered in this war, and
out of the 2,504 nurses overseas, 53 were killed either by drowning, disease, or enemy fire, while
others were killed in the line of duty by bombings in Europe at Canadian hospitals.
Now, we go to the back cover. The first picture on the back cover, in the top right corner, is a
gramophone. A gramophone is a music player that plays records. In Canada, the gramophone s leading
seller was the Berliner Gram o phone Company of

  • 2. Essay about bram stokers dracula Many people are familiar with the novel Dracula, by Bram Stoker. It is typically referred to as a horror story sure to give a good scare. However, Bram Stoker was not merely out to give his Victorian audience a thrill ride. Many symbols and themes, particularly those of the main antagonist Dracula, were brought into the novel to teach a lesson. Oddly enough, Dracula resembles other forces of evil in other religions as well. A strong comparison exists between Dracula, Satan, and Hindu demons. Of course these parallels are not fully drawn across the entire novel. Some differences do exist, but the parallels that are apparent bring attention to a cultures idea of a monster or threatening force to order. Dracula is the perfect symbol of ... It is questionable to label Ravana as a chaos monster, although he does create a good amount of local chaos among his community. Ravana has an established kingdom where all his people are happy. Ravana also participates in the sanction of marriage. The character Dracula hits to marriage of Mina being his bride, but this example is more of a perversion of the sanctity of marriage rather than a sincere commitment. Ravana s wives in the story are happy and fulfilled unlike the undead companions that Dracula enslaves. By taking the women of London, Dracula is also taking their purity, a highly regarded trait of the time. This situation is very similar to the situation between Ravana and Sita, the wife of Rama who Ravana kidnaps as his own. Throughout Stoker s novel, Mina is the symbol of the perfect Victorian woman who is pure, monogamous and supporting of her husband as she offers advice when necessary. Sita is also excellent example purity and a devoted wife as she refuses to succumb to Ravana due to her everlasting love and loyalty for her husband Rama. Once Dracula has taken the women in the novel, they slowly morph into lustful vampires themselves. Lust, in Stoker s time was a horrible trait representing evil. Sex was viewed as sin. • 3. Inequality In Plato s Phaedo Reconstruction Importantly, one needs to recall that Plato holds the human is a union of two distinct entities body and soul he considers death to be their separation. In Phaedo, he expressly uses our notion of equality to illustrate the way in which humans recollect knowledge (as Socrates recollection theory of knowledge holds). His his argument from recollection posits that the soul immortal. When we (humans) perceive sensible things that are equal in the world, we see these as deficient in their equality. (74d 74e) Equal things (which we perceive) and Equality itself are not the same. (74b 74c) When we see the deficiency in perceived equality, it prompts us to recollect Equality itself. (74c 74d) Knowledge of Equality itself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says these perceptions are deficient, as sensible things suffer from the compresence of opposites being both F and not F (e.g., equal and unequal) in different respects, or compared to different things. Plato refers to a stick as an example of a sensible thing. For premise 1, imagine we have three sticks, the first two are the same length and the third is shorter in length. So, we can say the first two are equal to one another (in length) and both are not equal to the third stick. Therefore, sticks cannot be equal full stop, but are equal to one stick and unequal to the other stick. This is the case for all things, they are both F and not F when compared to different things or objects. Just as Helen of Troy will be more beautiful compared to some women and less beautiful compared to other women. So, this deficiency shows there is a distinction between F and F ness, (e.g., equal sticks and Equality itself). In essence, our perceived knowledge of equal things and objects are distinct from Equality itself, in premise 2. He says, We say that there is something that is equal. I do not mean a stick equal to a stick or stone equal to a stone...but something else beyond all of these, the Equal itself. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Nature Of Fertility And Its Nature Fertility and its nature has always been a dilemma that societies, cultures, and humans have faced. Dating all the way back to prehistoric times there have been many remedies that have been conjured up in order to harness the power of fertility. It is as a life giver, she was identified with the mysterious powers of procreation and exalted as Mother Earth (Fiero 5). Due to this responsibility, the numerous female statuettes excavated by archaeologists displayed the vital role that women had in prehistoric communities. Also, the art suggests the figurines seem to have featured certain aspects of the female anatomy that were hyperbolized and accentuated. These features were the breasts, glutes, and abdomen. This presented the major physical changes of woman as she carried another human being in her whom for nine months. The art suggests how the people used these statuettes and what it meant to the prehistoric era and its main audience. It shows how primitive these people were with the practice of sympathetic magic and how it set up an infrastructure, where power was gained over a person, object, or animal by capturing it visually (Fiero 5). This power enhanced itself as the users or audience would see the power as homeopathic almost like how wearing Air Jordans will give one the ability to play like Michael Jordan the same theory applied to this. Since, there was such high value and responsibility for women as caretakers and child bearers this type of idolatry or praise ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organization s Internal Control Integrated Framework The Committee of Sponsoring Organization s Internal Control Integrated Framework is a study that establishes a common definition of internal control so as to meet the needs of various parties and it provides a standard in which organizations can use to assess their control systems and determine if and how to improve them. Since internal control is a process and addresses the achievement of objectives, not all controls are relevant to an audit; the controls that may affect the reliability of financial reporting are relevant to an audit. Having a board of directors or audit committee oversee the company s financial reports helps prevent management override of controls and management fraud, thus aiding in the effectiveness of internal control. Four factors that can result in increased financial reporting are personnel changes, the organization grows rapidly, corporate restructurings, and the changing of or adopting new accounting principles. The accounting information system has five major objectives. The first one is to identify and record transactions that are valid. The second one is to describe the transactions with sufficient detail to permit proper classification of transactions for financial reporting. The third objective is to measure the value of transactions in such a way that allows their proper monetary value to be recorded in the financial statements. The fourth objective of the accounting information system is to determine the time period in which transactions occurred so that they are recorded in the proper accounting period. • 6. Why Plea Bargains Should Be Taken To Trial When it comes to trials there is a great deal of uncertainty. There is no way to predict what a jury or judge will decide. A case that a lawyer thought would go one way could completely turn and do the opposite. This leads to the question of whether a case should be taken to trial or not. It is because of this that plea bargaining is often put to use. Plea bargaining is beneficial to the prosecutor as well as the defense attorney and the defendant. Plea bargains are based upon the mutual interest of all parties involved and they can occur for a variety of reasons. One reason a plea bargain may occur is because a prosecutors evidence is not as strong as they would like. Prosecutors want their cases to be as strong as possible so that they can expect a win. If they are unsure of what the outcome may be, they prefer to find a way to avoid going to trial. Plea bargains offer prosecutors a speedy conviction without committing to the necessities of a trial. However, this does not only help the prosecutor. The accused may find reduced charges, reduced defense costs, and sometimes even a shorter sentence than originally planned. ... The two major types of IBD are ulcerative colitis (UC), which is limited to the colonic mucosa, and Crohn disease (CD), which can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus, involves skip lesions , and is transmural. There is a genetic predisposition for IBD, and patients with this condition are more prone to the development of malignancy. Although both UC and CD have distinct pathologic findings, approximately 10 15% of patients cannot be classified into either type; in such patients, the disease is labeled as indeterminate colitis. Systemic symptoms are common in IBD and include fever, sweats, malaise, and arthralgias. UC and CD share many extraintestinal manifestations, although some of these tend to occur more commonly with either condition. Eye skin mouth joint extraintestinal manifestations (such as oral aphthae, erythema nodosum, large joint arthritis, and episcleritis) reflect active disease, whereas pyoderma gangrenosum, primary sclerosing cholangitis, ankylosing spondylitis, uveitis, kidney stones, and gallstones may occur in quiescent disease. • 10. The Mozart Effect and Infant Intelligence In modern society intelligence is highly competitive and subject to scrutiny; therefore, it is understandable that a child s intelligence is a primary concern for many parents. The Mozart effect, popularised in the 1990s, resulted in many parents believing that simply exposing their child to music composed by Mozart would improve their intelligence (Campbell, 1997). The claim was founded by research published in the journal Nature, which suggested that spatial reasoning could be temporarily enhanced by listening to one of Mozart s compositions for ten minutes (Rauscher, Shaw Ky, 1993). It will be argued that there is not sufficient evidence to support the claim that playing Mozart to babies will increase their intelligence. Firstly, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A study intending to emulate the results expressed in the original study was performed on preschool aged children exposing them to similar variables as those in the original study (Hui, 2007). The study showed no empirical evidence that listening to Mozart is more beneficial for children than ulterior conditions (Hui, 2007). This disproves the belief that listening to Mozart makes a child smarter also making the generalization from the Rauscher et al (1993) inconclusive. There are also a number of other factors that have been overlooked when comparing the finding of the original study to the Mozart effect in children. Another discerning factor expressed in the original study was the test used to assess intelligence between the participants. The portion of the Stanford Binet test used in the original study focuses on one aspect of intelligence, namely, spatial reasoning (Rauscher et al, 1993). Therefore, it would be invalid to assume that high scores on this specific test delineate an increase in overall general intelligence. The test itself is also bias as specific cultures outperform others, as cultural environment has an influence on intelligence, which may lead to deficits in the results found (Weinberg, 1989). • 11. Conquistadors Summary The reshaping of the New World began the moment Spaniards set foot on the continent. Those first conquistadors documented their encounters with native peoples, emphasizing their desire to convert these peoples to Christianity and away from their heathenistic rituals. The documents presented by Stuart B. Schwartz portray accounts from the perspectives of both the conquerors and the conquered. His work does not provide much in the way of personal interpretation but rather displays the documents so the reader can compare better both sides of the New World inhabitants. These documents present an opportunity to consider moments of heroism, greed, and despair born during the clashing of Spanish and Nahua cultures and challenge the way historians view such cultures and the interpretation of primary texts. Schwartz s goal, it would seem, is not to persuade readers of the accuracy of one source over another but rather to call attention to how personal interests, class and ethnic biases, and politics influence the interpretation of the conquering of the Aztec empire. Irene Silverblatt examines the new Spanish lands after Spaniards have established themselves in and amongst the native peoples. She describes the development of a modern world through the views of Spanish imperialism and argues that the Inquisition provides such evidence. In Lu Xun s short story Hometown, the narrator finds himself unable to meaningfully connect with old friends and acquaintances in his hometown, from which he has been away for over twenty years. Similarly, Mrs. Dalloway by Woolf features characters with rich inner lives who nevertheless fail to express their feelings with others. Despite the similarity in symptoms, however, the two authors portray the causes and implications of alienation in disparate ways. While Lu Xun attributes alienation to a kind of spiritual poverty or mediocrity that can be fought against, Woolf provides a more nuanced view where alienation results from people attempting to rise above mediocrity in the first place and is thus almost inescapable. These differing portrayals are reflected in the solutions prescribed: Lu Xun recommends resistance, whereas Woolf suggests a cheerful acceptance of the bittersweet tension between the pain of isolation and the ... The cottages around where Mr. Scott and his family lived were described as disgusting and sordid, and Laura used the word creature (Mansfield 2429) when referring to the widow and her sister. This suggests that she felt that Mr. Scott and his family were not thought of as people with names. To Laura they were creatures who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the renovations in 2014, steel columns were added in the vicinity of the B line of columns in this area of the structure. Given that these new columns may have been added to take additional stresses caused by the renovations and/or additions, observation of the deteriorated conditions of this corbel warranted additional investigation of other corbels in the area. This was not part of the original scope of work, but TKW has observed and reported on the condition of some of these corbels as a courtesy to the client. From this position, the northern corbel at column 5B appears to have similar conditions compared to column 6B. A significant portion of the corbel has fallen off and is lying on top of the CMU wall in that area (Figure 26). The bearing conditions look similar to column 6B, but exact measurements were not possible. The condition of the beam bearing on the corbel was not visible, but padding for bearing can be seen in the location. At column 4B, the northern corbel has cracked significantly at one corner of the corbel (Figure 27). The cracked portion is hanging from the corbel by a small section of concrete at the top of the corbel. Due to spatial constraints, measurements could not be made, but the section of concrete hanging from the corbel appears to be about ½in thick. Small pieces of concrete were found on the ground in this area, suggesting that the corbel is slowly deteriorating. Bearing pads appear to be in use on the southern corbel only, which shows no signs of deterioration. The northern corbel at column 3B is beginning to crack along one of its corners (Figure 28). Spatial constraints did not permit actual measurements, but the crack appears to be 0.012in 0.025in wide. Due to the presence of drywall in the area, it is difficult to gauge the depth of the crack as the attached drywall could be helping to holding the concrete in place. The southern corbel does not exhibit any signs of deterioration. Bearing pads appear to be utilized on both corbels. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Masculinity In The Full Monty The Full Monty The Full Monty, directed by Peter Cattaneo is a 1997 British comedy drama that brings into question everything that is supposedly known to be true of traditional masculinity. This is done largely through showing the struggle of unemployed men in Sheffield, England. Going for the Full Monty: Comedy, Gender, and Power, an essay by Jill Marshall assists in addressing the status quo breaks presented in the film. Marshall discusses the issues associated with masculinity and how director Cattaneo uses his comedic artistry to bring to light these important issues. In order to grasp the entire meaning of this film, reviewing The Full Monty while also looking at Marshalls essay and her take on the film. When first thinking about masculinity and what we traditionally associate with masculinity, some of the first adjectives to come to mind are strong, powerful, emotionless, provider. Males in society are held to a very high standard in being such, and this is immediately challenged at the beginning of The Full Monty. Each of the main characters is a male who is going through an identity crisis. Gaz, being unable to provide for his child, Dave being uncomfortable in his body, even Lomper and Guy s sexuality. To an eighth grade Gabrielle Norris, dressing like a princess and standing on a football field to be recognized would have been preposterous. • 25. The Roaring Twenties By F. Scott Fitzgerald The Roaring Twenties were a time of leisure and parties. The media and events surrounding this time period greatly impacted the carefree, extravagant lifestyle. This era was one of the most dramatic and energetic times in American history. To many, the symbols of the roaring Twenties were F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, due to their tales of the young and the wealthy (Hanson 96). The Roaring Twenties influenced many literary works, throughout the 1920s such as F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and This Side of Paradise. At the start of the 1920s, prohibition had just begun, banning the purchase, sale, and manufacture of alcohol. This actually had adverse effects as people began to make their own alcohol and sell it illegally (Hanson 96). World War I had also recently ended, and soldiers were coming home to a recession in the U.S. The end of the war meant a drop in government spending and exports. Business bankruptcies tripled between 1919 and 1920. Many businesses were forced to cut wages and lay off workers (McDonnell 296). As the 1920 recession came to an end, Americans had more leisure time and money to spare (353). By 1922 the economy had fully rebounded and there was even a shortage of workers (319). World War I fueled the fire of American s suspicions of foreigners (McDonnell 296). The Red Scare had Americans paralyzed by the fear of a possible communist infiltration (301). The particular form of the sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . The critic attempts to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto, attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger connected with it [3] . • 31. Requirements Of Requirements And Requirements Question 1: When writing a requirements document, it is important to understand what it is that you re writing. Requirements documents must be hierarchical, and also must be consistent. Consistency is important, because one must be able to follow for whom he is defining requirements. System requirements vary significantly from stakeholder requirements. As the requirements are written, it is also important to maintain order along with consistency. If requirements are not ordered very specifically, it will be easy to lose place of which requirements have already been defined. When writing requirements statements and sets of requirements statements, one must maintain uniqueness among each set. Consistency is not enough to disallow requirements from becoming redundant. One may remain consistent with the hierarchy of the requirements statements, however it is important to maintain uniqueness. The concept of hierarchy allows for a level of inheritance to be developed. If a systems engineer finds that he or she is writing redundant requirements, it is important that the SE evaluates the levels of inheritance. Repeating requirements can be detrimental in a requirements document for multiple reasons. These requirements take up time and space for one. It was originally intended to treat respiratory infections but during testing, it was noted that the drug worked to relieve morning sickness for pregnant women. This new reason allowed the drug to be prescribed to many new patients all over the world. Eventually Thalidomide was discovered to be causing birth defects in all of the pregnant women that were taking it. It caused the fetus to not develop correctly by causing limbs of the body or ears to develop improperly or not develop at all. It also cause spinal cord and digestive system defects as well as problems to the heart and kidneys. Thalidomide stopped being prescribed but not before many children and families were affected worldwide who had taken the drug. It took a couple of years before other countries caught up to realize that thalidomide was causing the birth defects and removed from being an over the counter drug in many countries. It wasn t until 1961 that it was completely removed after it was confirmed that it was causing birth defects. More than 10000 babies were born with defects and approximately killed 2000 before birth, but fewer than 100 were born here in the U.S. Short term effects included possible still born babies, and children with many health problems and complications that severely impacted their quality of life. The basis of psychodynamics is Sigmund Freud s theory in which he describes three states of mind vying for their preferred goal: the Id concerned with obtaining pleasure, the Superego concerned with upholding morality, and the Ego which uses reason to balance the desires of the two extremes. Freud describes three levels of consciousness the conscious which is what ideas we always know about, the preconscious which is ideas that we can make conscious, and the unconscious which is the ideas that are underneath our understanding which may include suppressed memories of traumatic events. He sees human motivation coming from a vague notion of instincts which include the life instinct which drives people to stimulate themselves/survive and the death instinct which drives people to be calm, serene, slipping into death. Freud gives great importance to human sexuality in his theories by linking such dilemmas during the childhood stages of development of the sex instinct to mental problems in adulthood in the form of subconscious ideas about the past influencing current actions. He sees defense mechanisms in people s actions as an attempt to protect the person s view of self or to protect from revealing something they don t want known, certain cues like forgetting what to say reveal that there is ... Artifacts and Creations The most visible level is artifacts and creations. This level of culture is observable. Artifacts include any visible, verbally or touchable definable elements in an organisation, such as interior design, decoration, dress code and staff uniform, even speech. All may be visible standards of culture, but difficult to interpret. Artifacts and creations also may make people know what a group is achieving. 2. Values and Beliefs Values and beliefs is a level next to visibility. They are the organisation s stated values and rules of behavior. But they are not directly observable, as behaviors are. It is how the members represent the organisation both to themselves and to others. This is often expressed in philosophies and public identity. It can sometimes often be a reflection for the future, of what the members hope to become. Examples of this would be employee professionalism. Problems may arise if espoused values by leaders are not in link with the general assumptions of the culture. 3. Basic Assumptions Basic assumptions is in the deeply core of a culture, it help us to understand a organisational culture. It is deeply embedded, taken for granted behaviors which is usually unconscious, but constitute the essence of culture. These assumptions are typically so well integrated in the office dynamic that they are hard to explain from within. Schein contends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. St Brigid Research Paper St Brigid of Kildare was born in 452 AD. She was a catholic nun who became one of the patron saints of Ireland. She dedicated her whole life to following Jesus s message; which was to love god, and love others. She shared this as her own message, through the love and support she gave to others in the community. Like Jesus she wanted to help the less fortunate and give to those that were in need, offering them hope and faith. She chose to seek out justice among her community and society, working around the lives of many. She was inspired by Jesus spirituality, nature and love, that she wanted to demonstration her appreciation and strength to those who were struggling. For example, she used her middle class lifestyle to contribute to feeding the poor and nursing those who were injured or sick. Her childhood was filled with donating her mothers and father s possessions to anyone who asked (Online, n.d.). St Brigid impacted all people around her. She inspired greatness to those who needed her compassion and belief. For her endless time and support, it is suggested that her message transcends time well beyond her death to the individuals and groups along the years to today. Discussion of her transcendence will be ruminated throughout this text. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I would also like to think that by being a teacher I can have an inspiration to children, to do good in school and follow they passions, like St Brigid was an inspiration to many throughout centuries. • 42. Progression Of Confucianism Essay The progression of Confucianism Before Confucianism during the Shang dynasty the method of reasoning was much different than it is today. The practice of oracle bone divination was used to guide the shang and even though this specific ritual is not practiced much today the Shang did provide the idea of a mutual relationship between the living and the dead. I believe that most religions leave some sort of lasting contribution to society and Confucianism s will be both the culture of literate elite as well as the interdependence required for social harmony. The central confucian texts are The five classics that were rumored to be written by Confucius himself. Confucianism was sometimes seen as a philosophy and not a religion, but confucius ... However I believe she misinterpreted the next type of friend because she describes this friend as the forgiving one, in the text it says To make friends with the upright, faithful, with the well informed, is beneficial (Book 16 Ch.4). I interpreted the second beneficial friend as one who continuously has faith, in other people and himself. I believe the reason she changed this in her reinterpretation is because she wants to make Confucianism more appealing and having a faithful friend might not resonate with people in this modern era due to the decline of religion in general. After researching Professor Yu Dan I came across an article titled She makes Confucianism cool again just the title would have me believe that one of her goals is to relate to today s youth this is not necessarily a bad thing but I do believe that she might have to compromise some teachings in order to present a more appealing form of ... • 43. John Mcdonald s Influence On Canadian History I view the old cover as telling me that Canadian history is made up of many different people and events. Many different individuals who helped shape Canada today bare the cover, as well as different objects that represent different events. Near the top of the textbook, right near the title, there is a British flag. Britain had a gargantuan impact on Canadian history, as Canada was a British colony and Britain continues to influence Canada today. For example, in Canada we often use British spelling instead of American spelling, like the words colour, instead of color, and grey, instead of gray. To the right of the title is a picture of John A. Macdonald, who was essential to Canadian history. He was the first prime minister of Canada, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These women represent the part women took in Canadian history. Women did not get the right to vote in federal elections in Canada until 1918, and the first female to practice medicine did not get licensed in Canada until 1875. The first female judge in Canada was appointed in 1916, and she faced many challenges, such as male lawyers stating that, because she was a woman, she was therefore not a person under the law. It was not until 1929 that women were considered persons . Underneath the two women are RCMP officers. RCMP stands for Royal Canadian Mounted Police. When people from foreign countries think of Canada, many think of the RCMP. The RCMP was founded in 1920, and continues to be a symbol of Canada today. The last picture on the front cover is of a female nurse. She represents the nurses of World War I. World War began in 1914, and ended in 1918. A total of 3141 Canadian volunteered in this war, and out of the 2,504 nurses overseas, 53 were killed either by drowning, disease, or enemy fire, while others were killed in the line of duty by bombings in Europe at Canadian hospitals.
