Psychological Factors Of A Serial Killer Essay
Psychological Factors of a Serial Killer
Alyssa Phillips
Caledonia Mumford High School
Abstract
Neurologically, serial killers have common brain structure abnormalities that cause them to lack
emotions as well as to think irrationally. Their family history includes unhappy relationships with their
parents who usually have beaten them or mentally/sexually abused them. This may cause them to be
unable to form healthy relationships and lack empathy and remorse. Serial killers can be distinguished
by their deceitfulness and their need to control people. Depending on if they are organized or
disorganized killer, they have certain personality characteristics. Personality disorders such as
Antisocial and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as schizophrenia, are common among serial
killers. Since serial killers are exposed to traumatic environments, their brains change their structure in
order to respond to their experiences.
Intro
A serial killer: a person who murders three or more people; taking place over more than a month with
significant breaks in between. How do you tell who these murderers are? How do you distinguish
them from a next door neighbor, a family member, or a friend? By their brain structure, personality
and family history. There is a commonality among serial killers; not just physically but mentally and
neurologically! How they think, how they act, their family history. Several studies into the social

Literary critic Mark Cunningham presents personal views and ideas about the character, Louise
Mallard, in The Story of an Hour. He presents the argument that Louise did not pass away after seeing
her husband, Brently Mallard, arrive home. Rather he argues she passed away from the emotional
strain brought on by the awakening moments of freedom experienced soon after learning of her loss.

Unraveling The Meaning Of `` Kill The Indian, Save The Man...
Unraveling the meaning of Kill the Indian, Save the Man
There are so many different definitions of the word racism, but how does each peron define it? One
individual, Richard Henry Pratt, clearly knew how to thoroughly define the word, Segregating any
class or race of people apart from the rest of the people kills the progress of the segregated people or
makes their growth very slow (Howard 2016). Unfortunately, we are still living in the repercussion of
Pratt s word. The United States history is full of examples that have led to the ethnocentric
development of the country. One of the most remote examples of this ethnocentric belief is displayed
with the construction of off reservation boarding schools for Native Americans first started in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania, by former general, Richard Henry Pratt. The purpose of the schools was to strip Native
Americans of their cultural traditions and teach them the skills necessary to function in American
Society. Pratt keyed this belief with the saying Kill the Indian, save the man, in order to justify his
reasons to assimilate the Indians to the white culture. However, were the American Indians really
forced to assimilate because society wanted to help them, or because they wanted America to be solely
made of true Americans with American culture? How was the assimilation of the Indians satisfactory
when it created cultural genocide? Having assimilated the Indian man did not save him, it merely
replaced him.

A Study On High Rise Apartments
Abstract
High rise apartments are probably the fires posing most danger to life and property in residential areas.
The spread of flame in high rise Buildings up the vertical walls has been studied computationally and
experimentally all around the globe for decades now. Flames in the high rise building fires can travel
up the shafts provided for lifts, through spacing in the interior walls, up and down the stairwells and
ductwork provided for air conditioning but one of the quickest ways the flames spread to floor above
is through the open windows via the exterior of the building. The depth of the balcony and the height
of the spandrel wall greatly affects the spread of fire in the vertical direction. By changing the balcony
depth and the height of spandrel wall, the intend of this study is to find an optimal configuration
individually and as a combination of balcony and spandrel wall that reduces fire spread in the vertical
direction via external wall.
Introduction
According to US Fire Administration, from 2007 to 2011, there were about 15,400 fires in high rise
buildings in the United States of America [1] and more than 75% of these fires were residential
buildings. More than 60%of these fires in the high rise buildings initiated below 50 feet i.e.at or below
the fourth floor level. These fires in the residential high rise structures are not pecuniary costly as
compared to high rise fires in commercial structures, on the other hand they pose a great risk to lives

Hamlet Ghost Is Real Essay
Maybe he s real and maybe he s not, either way, the ghost certainly seems real to Hamlet. Throughout
Hamlet, both the reader and young Hamlet are in a dilemma as to whether or not the ghost of Hamlet s
father is a spirit sent to tempt and destroy Hamlet or if it is truly his father who has come to reveal the
tragedy of his death so that revenge can be sought. On the one hand, it is rather easy to believe that the
general Shakespearian attitudes and assumptions about apparitions are correct, that they are spirits
sent from hell to tempt and wreak havoc on the living. On the other hand, however, the reader, like
Hamlet, cannot help but feel compelled to listen to the ghost s tale about his death and his lack of
peace. Because of the verbal power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So It is clearly possible that the ghost as a father might just be a figment of Hamlet s imagination, as
Hamlet is also the only one who has a dialogue with the ghost and he s the only one who sees or hears
it when the ghost shows up, for instance, in Gertrude s chamber to remind Hamlet to be nice to his
mom. Even before Hamlet finds out that the ghost has been appearing on the castle walls, he says to
Horatio My father methinks I see my father [...] in my mind s eye Has Hamlet been imagining his
conversations with the ghost the whole time? Creating the ghost out of his wild imagination could be
Hamlet s way of dealing with the loss of the father he loved and idolized. Regardless of whether or not
the ghost actually exists though, the spirit perhaps represents the way young Hamlet is haunted by his
father s memory. Even though Claudius insists Hamlet s deep grief is unmanly and Gertrude pushes
Hamlet constantly to just move one, the prince just mentally and emotionally

The Galileo Controversy
The 17th century was full of challenges to the authority of the Catholic Church. Many of these
challenges were indirectly related to the Church s power, as they indicted the Church s teachings
rather than its authority. Those who disagreed with the Church formulated various theories that were
oppositional to those of the Church. In 1609,
Galileo made a revolutionary discovery. He utilized a telescope to gaze into the night sky, and found
that the sun was located at the center of the solar system. Furthermore, he found that the planets
revolved around the sun. These findings were against popular belief and that of the Church. Galileo
promoted his theory of heliocentrism through various writings and conversations with individuals, but
in 1633, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, in a private letter to the Duchess of Tuscany in 1615, Galileo defended his beliefs, expressing
that he did not believe that the same God who has given senses, reason and intellect has intended for
[them] to not use them. However, upon a closer reading of this evidence, one finds that Galileo never
opposed his alleged heresy in the letter. The weakness in this evidence is that it defends Galileo s
beliefs, contending that they may be true, but never addresses how it interacts with the beliefs of the
Church. Even if this letter were a perfect source, it would still not be able to show that Galileo was not
a heretic because Galileo never rejects the fact that his belief was different from the belief of the
Church. A heretic is one whose beliefs are at odds with the teachings of the Church, which means that
even if Galileo was correct in saying that the sun was at the center of the universe, he was still a
heretic for believing in a theory contrary to one taught by the Church. These alternative pieces of
evidence fail to definitively show that Galileo was not a

Alexandria In Justine
The representation of Alexandria in Lawrence Durrell s Justine In his novel, Justine, Lawrence Durrell
gives his readers a new version of Alexandria, claiming that this is the real city . The novel would
arouse many questions to an Alexandrian reader s mind; does Durrell factually represent the
Cosmopolitan city of the time? Do his characters reflect the kind of life which the Alexandrian
inhabitants had back then? Or is he giving, throughout Justine, a parallel mythical city which he
created out of his imagination? The book clearly reflects Durrell s viewpoint regarding Alexandria; he
exhibits it as an erotic city that enforces a state of total indulgence in sensual pleasures upon its
inhabitants. Moreover, he tackles the city ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Durrell presents two Alexandrias; the Arabic Alexandria which is always related to negative
descriptions and always looked at with resentment and disgust, and the European Alexandria which
comes along with the clean streets and the civilized characters. Durrell exhibits the Arab Quarters as
an undefined mass; he does not name their streets or their cafes; he gives them no identity. In contrast,
the European streets are named, for instance; Rue Foaad, Rue Sherief and Naby Daniel. The voice of
the Arabs is shut; we do not get to see any Egyptian characters except for Nessim, whom we know
lately in the Alexandria Quartet about his national treason; a person who has no sense of belonging
towards Egypt. Nessim also is so westernized; the fact that Nessim s voice is heard in the novel goes
back to his wealthy state and his high social rank that did enable him to neglect his Egyptian
nationality and have a European lifestyle. Hence, Nessim does not represent the real Egyptian
Alexandrian inhabitant of the time. Durrell s claim that only the city is real is questionable; you cannot
write a novel as a representative of Alexandria and its inhabitants while choosing to foreground only
the western voices and background the Arab ones. So Durrell s colonial ideology is shown in his
writing; his tone is racial and biased against the Egyptians. Moreover, Durrell depicts Muslim Arabs
as racist violent people who persecute

CA; Mammoth Lakes, CA; Central Falls, RI and Boise County, ID. Between these eight broke cities
Mammoth Lakes, Harrisburg and Boise County were amongst those that were dismissed. The Chapter

It is the federal government s duty to take action on behalf of the state and its people. History has
shown us when the federal government does not take affirmative action and assure the people matters
are in order; people become frantic, hence the 1920 s stock market crash. According to the Wall Street
Journal, the federal government should not be held accountable for everything. In their views, the
current level of expectation regarding the federal government is extremely unrealistic. It is only fair to
agree with the Wall Street Journal. The people should realize that the federal government cannot
supervise every aspect of government or the citizens or each individual. The federal government
should not feel obligated nor should they provide funding to any cities to preserve them from going
into bankruptcy. Unless the federal government is a direct contributor, the government should not be
held responsible to bail out any city and I believe the idea alone is very detrimental to the current
economy. At this very moment the United States total national deficit currently stands at
$16,787,451,118,147. Opening the door for bailouts is comparable to opening Pandora s Box, a very
dangerous thing for our economy and for our children s futures. I do expect the federal government to
step in, formulate a plan, and seek ways to get the city out of debt;

Taking a Look at the Spiritual Warfare
the Spiritual warfare
Spiritual warfare is not a theory. Spiritual warfare is not a rote. Spiritual warfare is not just to simply
unknown. No. Spiritual warfare is a daily practice of those who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and
Savior.
Ephesians 6: 12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
powers of this dark world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
The enemy we face is not a man but a demon with all his minions. Who is actually the devil and his
friends? They are a third of the angels with the boss named Lucifer who has been a rebellion in
heaven, therefore they were expelled from Heaven and wander in this world while waiting for the
punishment of hell fire.
People would not want to believe, like it or not will be involved in spiritual warfare. You can not say, I
love peace, I do not want to be involved although the battle of spiritual warfare! Because of this fact
there is always a battle in everyday life. Since you became a follower of Christ, the devil will make
you his enemy and constantly trying to attack and deceive you.

John 10:10 a
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.
Satan obviously wants to steal thanks to you, kill your life, and you destroy the earth and in hell. That
is why every follower of Christ shall participate in this spiritual warfare.

The Mind Argument And The Evil Demon Argument
Renѐ Descartes is known to be the founder of modern philosophy aswell as a man who was superior in
the scientific revolution. As a catholic and a man of science he wanted to show how the scientific
world had space for God and freedom which hence led to the Mediditions published in 1641. In the
first meditation Descartes introduces the idea that in order for him to establish anything in the sciences
which is stable and likely to last he must build truths of which he can be certain. In order to do so he
believes he must start right from the foundations, demolishing all of his previous opinions. He finds
out that his senses often deceive him and concludes that it is prudent never to trust completely those
who have deceived us even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The evil demon argument is the idea that there might be a spiritual being, almost like god, deceiving
us in matters that are not put into doubt by the dreaming argument the simpler and more universal
things . A key point to be remembered throughout this argument is that Descartes is not trying to have
us believe in the possibility of the evil demon but in turn he is just trying to make the reader consider
it in order to dismiss the idea. This argument is similar to the dreaming argument from the perspective
that everything we know to believe could be false. There is no evidence for simple mathematic
equations like 2+3=5 to be true just as there is no evidence to prove we are not living within a dream.
The argument puts into question whether the evil demon deceives us into believing things in which are
simply made into a virtual reality when in fact there could be no earth, no sky, no extended thing, no
shape, no size, no place . Just as the dreaming argument can be broken up into premises and a
conclusion the same can be done for the evil demon;
If I am certain to be certain of anything at all then I need to be certain that I am not being deceived by

Positive And Negative Effects Of The Media
The media industry influences society by providing entertainment, spreading information, and
allowing for communication. The abundance of technology such as cell phones, tablets, computers,
and television has made the world much more connected than ever. Consequently, more and more
Americans are becoming dependent on such devices that make daily tasks easier. Through these
connections, the media is able to implement itself into everyday lives, and although these
advancements improve people s lives, there are aspects that are negative. The media tends to be
enjoyed for the benefits it offers with a disregard for its risks. Unfortunately, the current generation

These advertisements are present in many of today s viewing programs and as alcohol is shaped into
adolescents lives, the more harmful the media becomes.
Alcohol is only one of the many damaging impacts the media promotes. Commercials, a form of
media, is persistent in providing goods that harm the community that is exposed to it. For example,
when a child or adult is viewing television, they are exposed to commercials that reference food
products at approximately ten times an hour, and these are foods with high amounts of calories
(Rosiek). The way in which the media presents such foods makes adolescents much more vulnerable
to making unhealthy choices. As a consequence, for every extra hour a child spends viewing television
weekly, the risk of them developing obesity is increased by three percent (Rosiek). As inactivity
decreases and the malicious food consumption increases during these television seasons, the obesity
rates take a leap in number as well. Moreover, obesity has its own risks as well, as many children are
faced with obesity, they are also challenged with diabetes, respiratory disorders, cancer, and
cardiovascular diseases (Rosiek). The more media specifically commercials is influenced by

The Case Law Has Established A Formal And Sufficiency Test
o Regarding given circumstance, the issue is to determine the status as such the rights derived by
Arvind, his partner Stephanie as well as their two children under EU law. In order to do this each of
them will be discussed below. Arvind Article 20 TFEU states that every person holding the nationality
of a member state shall be a citizen of the union. In addition Article 21 further provides for the rights
of citizens to move freely within any member state subject to conditions and limitations. Arvind being
a British national under the above provisions automatically becomes an EU citizen and for the purpose
of ART 21 is entitled to move freely within any member state (Czech Republic.). A union citizen can
stay for a period more than 3months if he is a worker or self employed . Article 45 48 TFEU
establishes the rights of a worker under free movement of people in EU law. The meaning of a worker
is further found in case law. The case law has established a formal and sufficiency test The sufficiency
test is based on the nature and quality of the work such that a person can be regarded as engaged in
effective and genuine work . This was illustrated in Levin. The formal test is set in Lawrie Blum.

The first error that might have occurred was that the water and vinegar might have been covering the
entire penny and the penny might not have been exposed to enough air. If the penny was not exposed
to enough air, then the penny could have reacted differently toward the experiment. The paper towels
were dry towards the end of the experiment and more water and vinegar was not added to the cups.
This could have affected the way the penny was affected. With more water and vinegar, the pennies
may have gotten more green or may have has a stronger reaction. At the end of the experiment, the
pennies were taken out of the cups and placed a new paper towel. The towel was then labeled with
sharpies and left to sit there for a day. The different chemicals in the sharpies could have affected the
way the penny reacted. Since the sharpie marker was so close to the pennies, they could have easily
been affected. Another experiment that people may want to do next is to the same experiment, but
with different liquids. Instead of the vinegar being white vinegar, maybe one could try the experiment
with a different type of vinegar, like apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has different ingredients
and could be affected differently and have very different results. To conclude, there were many
possible errors during this experiment and many scientific reasons on why the pennies reacted the way

Theme Of Racism In Home And God Help The Child
Race is a biological reality that causes differentiation and results in racism (Henry). Toni Morrison
discusses this constructed racism in her books Home and God Help the Child with an explicit fashion.
The female protagonists, Cee and Bride, in the two novels share some mutual experiences; they were
both abused in their childhoods. These tragic childhoods have made them into vulnerable adults. The
book Home portrays how a white doctor makes use of Cee s ignorance and abuses her. Although
Bride, the protagonist in God Help the Child, is successful, she is still haunted by her childhood. They
both are naïve and willing do anything to please others for attentions and affections. Through her
novels, Morrison leads the readers to her fictional world fills with reality so that they can realize the
unjust agony the black has endured throughout the history. With Cee and Bride in her novels Home

Hester Prynne Religion
There is a Puritan society in the Scarlett letter which incorporates their organized religion into the
political system. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter and inside of the text he implies a
criticism and dislike of organized religion. The text itself critiques the style of organized religion by
describing the people as a group of people with sad coloured garments and grey steeple crowned hats
(Hawthorne 142). Hawthorne pictures the people of the town, as a simple and dark people. The
heathen of the story who divided the code of the town, Hester Prynne, is described as beautiful from

much. She says that she will instruct pearl about sin and what to believe. Hester is a prime example of
someone who wishes to resist the oppression, but is forced by social standards and even economical
ones to abide by them. She is paid by the people who believe strongly from organized religion, so if
she resists the entirety of the oppression from the organized group then she would be out of money, a

Furthermore, Hester is her torment as well as happiness because if not for her becoming pregnant, she

because it is still her child and she loves her. Then, Hester, being brought up in this society herself,
appeals to the emotion of the minister to try and persuade them to let her keep Pearl. She says that
God gave her into my keeping and that She should have complete care of her (Hawthorne 325).

individual (Frijda, 1986). This approach is intrinsically relational and suggests that one cannot
understand emotion without considering the individual within any given context. Thus, emotions are
conceptualized as being flexible, contextually bound, and goal directed, and are critical for guiding
interpersonal relations (Butler, Lee, Gross, 2007; Campos, Mumme, Kermoian, Campos, 1994). In
order to understand how emotions influence interpersonal relations one must consider the role of
cultural context. Culture influences the way in which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the goal of this study is to examine cultural differences in peer socialization of emotions within
children s close, same sex friendships. In order to appreciate the role of culture on emotion, one must
first gain an understanding of the importance of emotional development and socialization. Once these
concepts have been explained, past research regarding culture and emotion will be evidenced in
support for the current study proposal.
Emotional Development and Socialization
Emotional development is the emergence of a child s experience, expression, understanding, and
regulation of emotions. This developmental process begins in infancy and continues through late
adolescence, with the most dramatic increase in skills often occurring during the transition from
middle childhood to adolescence (von Salisch, 2001). Emotional development is strongly related with
healthy psychological functioning, as research consistently supports the link between deficits in
emotional competency and a variety of negative social and psychological outcomes such as increases
in internalizing and externalizing symptomology (Garner Hinton, 2010; Perry Parish Zeman, 2011). It
is because of this strong association that researchers have pushed for increased attention to identify
components deemed necessary for adaptive

Senator Tim Scott Essay
If I were to choose a figure in the government who I admire the most, that person would be Senator
Tim Scott of South Carolina. Ever since I began to take an interest in politics, I always leaned towards
the conservative side of the spectrum but everyone else around me identified as a liberal. As an
African American male, it is hard to come out as a black republican, especially when you attend a
Historically Black College. For the last couple of decades, the black community has tended to vote
Democrat and when they see one of their own come out as a republican, they reject that person and
instantly decry them. So many blacks who do share conservative views choose not to come out as
republican, partly because of the backlash they expect to face. However, this is not the case of Senator
Tim Scott. I look up to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a political science major, I aspire to be an elected official, but the office I desire the most is that of
a United States Senator and with Tim Scott holding that office I look up to him even more. Senator
Scott because is also not afraid to speak about issues that affect that black community, in a mature
way. Police brutality is a hot topic and Senator Scott acknowledges that as a black man, he has been
mistreated at times by law enforcement and that there is policeman who abuse their power and
mistreat others. While pointing out these faults with law enforcement, Senator Scott acknowledges
that the job law enforcement officials have is not easy or always perfect but he still supports and
respects our law enforcement officials. Finally, Senator Tim Scott is an inspiration to me and
testament to other black republicans that we can exist and work as elected officials. He is man whose
character is built on a moral and spiritual foundation and I could not think of a better man in public

The Mongols And The Mongols
According to the background essay on the Mongols, The Mongols were a small tribe during the 13th
century. They were from the grasslands of Central Asia and conquered much of the known world. The
essay also said that They operate from the backs of horses and sometimes use siege weapons. It was
also explained how the Mongols were one of the several nomadic peoples who competed with one
another for pasture land and livestock. They also had no metal working, no written language, and no
permanent homes. The Mongols also were first led by Genghis Khan and did not have a good
reputation. The Mongols may have been successful, but it was due to mostly negative examples and
information. The Mongols were although positive in a way. For example their Yam System, to make
them go faster and farther. However, this example and many other positive examples are ways for the
Mongols to fight better and kill more people. The Mongols were barbaric because they were brutal
and ruthless.
The Mongols were first off very brutal people whose only focuses were to kill people to get what they
wanted, land. One reason why the Mongols were so brutal was because of their brutal leaders who told
them what to do and go for. According to the background essay on the Mongols Numerous chinese

Major Depressive Disorders Paper
Depression is defined as an alteration in mood that is expressed by feelings of sadness, despair, or
pessimism (Neeb s, 397). There are seven types of depressive disorders which are major depressive
disorder, dysthymic disorder, postpartum depression, major depressive disorder with seasonal pattern,
substance induced depressive disorder, depressive disorder associated with another medical condition,
and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Each type of depression has it s own criteria for a patient to be
diagnosed under. Depression often goes hand in hand with anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders,
substance use disorders, eating disorders, and personality disorders (ATI, 97). Depressive disorders are

Simulated Violent Role-Playing Video Games
Fellow peers of Mountain View Middle School,
I have been aware for quite some time about the ongoing argument over simulated violent role playing
games. Quite a few of you believe that they can be dangerous and have negative effects on adolescents
today, while they themselves have few interactions and experiences with these types of games.
Specifically, a student by the name of Monica Louka strongly believes that these role playing games
are harmful and thinks adults should be stricter on limiting these games. I would like to ask that this
single person, and everyone with similar views reconsider this position. Students who are rallying

Included in the article Violent video games may stop crime by keeping criminals busy playing violent
video games is the idea that children that play these simulated games are having fun, and have the
potential to not be violent in real life. Meaning that contrary to popular belief, these games can be
beneficial for the youngsters and keep them out of trouble. Since these games are so popular with
children today, they include many people and are only getting to be more popular. The result of this is
kids are getting excited to play with each other, and look forward to getting to play. They also result in
crime rates going down, proving how helpful these games actually are. Games such as these also
cause little damage to adolescents because all these games are about is having fun, and have little
intention of causing harm to any players. This overall highlights how simulated violent role playing
games are all about helping children, and keep them out of

Better Life Analysis
Within Isaac Julien Playtime exhibition that is presented by Fort Mason Center for Arts and Culture
with the Kramlich Collection and San Francisco Art Institute, there is a film called Better Life (Ten
Thousand Waves). This film is located in the Gray Box Gallery, within the San Francisco Art Institute.
Based on Isaac Julian s essay entitled The Multilayered Storytelling in Film Installation , Better Life
conveys Julian s style of incorporating different artistic discipline to create a unique poetic and visual
language that is within the art context . By repeating 1000 waves the form of calligraphy and poetry, it
conveys loss and separation ; The movement of Mazu and the lover convey the Chinese perspective of
the tragedy. conveys the theme of migration that the Chinese cockle pickers did in search for a better

10000 waves in the form of a poetry and calligraphy, it conveys the loss and death of the tragedy . To
pay homage to the inspiration for the film, Isaac Julian incorporated sections of the poem of the same
name in the film by having a narrator recite particular sections. While the female narrator states, I
have no time to make love to my wife the woman head and eyes are facing down. The visual and

Neil Postman Knowledge
Knowledge has come about through many different forms throughout history and has constantly
changed along with the times. To equate media to epistemology is to say how media relates to how we
understand knowledge. In this chapter, Neil Postman discusses how modern media has created an
epistemological shift and whether it has affected us for better or for worse. Postman argues that this
shift has altered the structure of discourse no differently than how every new medium before it has
always done. The way we perceive truth has consistently changed along with a new change in medium
as truth can be different things to different people in different time periods. Postman discusses how
law used to be conducted orally as there was no written law so rhetoric and proverbs had to be used in
order for justice to be done (18). Now there is so much written law as every trial is recorded and there
is endless precedents that can be looked up in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That isn t to say that the spoken word is useless, but, as Postman says, The written word endures, the
spoken word disappears; and that is why writing is closer to the truth than speaking (21). The written
word endures greater than the spoken word because it is well thought out, cannot be changed once it is
written down, and it reveals the truth through means that can t often be reached through verbal
communication. Before the written word poems and rhetoric were of greater importance than they
were after as knowing things off the top of one s head meant that person was of greater intelligence.
This is different to modern times where there is no reason to memorize things as everything important
is already written down and can, for the most part, be found at a moment s notice. I think that Postman
is trying to convey that knowledge is greater benefitted by the written word rather than the spoken

The Effects Of Hip Hop Music On Adolescents
Effects of Hip Hop Music on Adolescents Music is a significant part of the lives of most people all
over the world. In the United States, people listen to more than 25 hours each week [1]. Hip hop
makes up a large percentage of adolescent music genre preference. It goes without saying that this
overwhelming presence of music in the lives of so many people will have a psychological effect on
American culture and our way of life. But how exactly is Hip Hop affecting us psychologically and
culturally? The effects of music videos on adolescences have been the subject of controversy for
decades. The common reason for the concern has been appropriately summed by Arnett (a Research
Professor of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts), who explained, women are
used as props for the illusive life the music video is portraying the artist to have. The concern that hip
hop culture, as seen in music videos, has become heavily influential on young people s views of
sexuality. The concern about mainstream hip hop music and music videos sexualizing women, in
particular, is so omnipresent, many can even be referenced as rape culture by embedded sexual
violence in the lyrics being disguised as pleasurable elements of hip hop. The Kaiser Family
Foundation in the year 2001 reported that teenagers rank entertainment media as the main source for
information about sexuality and sexual health [3]. Descriptive language and sexual imagery in music
videos directly affect

Optical And Electrical Properties Of Pva Ag
ABSTRACT In the present work, PVAAg nanocomposite films with thickness 0.18 mm, constant
silver content (0.4 wt. %) and different time of reactions (0.1, 3, 5, 7, 9 h) were prepared by chemical
reduction methods. Surface topology, optical and electrical properties of PVAAg nanocomposite were
studied using absorption spectroscopy, electrometer, atomic force microscope (AFM) and
photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared nanocomposites. Optical
absorption coefficient studies showed a peak at 427 nm for all samples, in addition to the peak at 200
nm for undoped PVA film. There is observable change in the absorbed intensity at 427 nm with the
time of reaction. The refractive index was found increase with increasing the time of reaction. It was

The Conspiracy Theories Of The United States
What if what you had been told your whole life was a lie? How would you feel if everything reported
about a terrorist attack or a shooting was actually a conspiracy by the United States? What is a
conspiracy? According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a conspiracy is a secret plan made by two
or more people that is harmful or illegal . There are so many conspiracy theories out there in the world
starting as early as the 1800s. These theories range from scientific, terrorist, criminal, political,
economic and business, and even religious conspiracies. The two conspiracy theories that I am talking
about is the attack that changed the United States, as we knew it, the one that we believed was a
terrorist attack, also known as 9/11, and the Sandy Hook shooting. There are multiple reasons that lead
me to consider these two attacks to be something more than a terrorist and criminal attack. The
reasons are because the timelines do not add up, there are too many inconsistencies, and the benefits
are too great.
The attack on American soil on September 11, 2001 is one conspiracy theory to consider. The
timelines given to the American people concerning the 9/11 attack do not make sense. At
approximately 8:46 am the American Airlines Flight 11 heading to Los Angeles crashes into the North

She emphasized her role in the Black Liberation party, its impact on her life and how she perceived
herself. Throughout the novel Assata used a lowercase I , I think she used this technique to show
readers that this movement is bigger than her. I am about life, i said to myself. I m gonna live as hard
as i can and as full as i can until i die. And i m not letting these parasites, these oppressors, these
greedy racist swine make me kill my children in my mind, before they are even born. (Shakur 93).
Assata went on to describe how some people in the black community accepted the European standards
of beauty, thus disregarding their own identity. But behind our fights, self hatred was clearly visible.
(Shakur 30). Assata then says that the history they have taught us were all lies and she had to find facts
herself. Moreover, this novel discussed black people accepting the Europeans standard of beauty and
not their own. There were quite a few girls who tried to bleach their skin white with bleaching cream
and who got pimples instead. And, of course we went to the beauty parlor and got our hair
straightened. I couldn t wait to go to the beauty parlor and get my hair all fried up. I wanted Shirley

Analysis Of The Book Leningrad

songwriter who toured Russia in the later days of the Cold War in the mid 1980 s. Billy Joel was the
first American to tour any communist country since the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and the raising

Billy Joel also makes it clear that we can not judge a group of people strictly on their leader s actions
because they do not necessarily represent the popular opinion that their nation s people have. The song
Leningrad is of interest to me because I am a musician myself and I play the piano as does Billy Joel.
Music has always played a substantial role in my life so I decided to use a music as the artifact of this
assignment. To me, it is interesting to find out how a popular song can change and affect the opinions
and thinking of its listeners through the use of a mass media outlet. The average person does not
typically take an analytical approach to a song to figure out the message behind it. It is also interesting
that a listener can still be persuaded by a song s message whether the listener knows it is happening or
not. The use of song as a way to shed light on social situations has been around for many years and
frequently these songs usually focus on issues on a more minor scale. Leningrad does the exact
opposite by not only being used for entertainment but also by using a war that most people had grown
up through and showing how we can help resolve these issues that caused the war. Approaching the
song Leningrad from a theoretical understanding is useful in that it shows how Billy Joel uses his
words and experiences with the Russian people to persuade and change the opinions that the American
people have towards the Russian s system of

The European Union Law Has A Big Impact On How The Uk Law...
The European Union law has had a big impact on how the UK law monitor their water pollution as
there are now specific standards that have to be adhered to as the government are now monitored and
measured. The EU first regarded water pollution as an important matter in 1973 and have been
introducing new directives since. The directives have looked at a number of topics referring to water
pollution. In 2000 the European Commission produced The Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC
(WFD) legislation as a major driver for achieving sustainable management of water in the UK and
other EU member states for many years to come. The WFD requests that all inland and coastal waters
within river basin districts must reach at least good status by 2015 and states how this should be
reached through the establishment of environmental objectives and ecological goals for surface
waters. As a result, there will be healthy water environment, achieved by taking due account of
environmental, economic and social considerations (European Communities, 2000). The WFD is a
legal structure that protects all rivers, lakes, estuaries, inland coastal waters and groundwater bodies
across Europe. It aims to do this by: Encouraging sustainable water consumption Protecting,
Enhancing and stopping any deterioration of aquatic systems Stopping hazardous substances entering
the marine environment Reducing ground water pollution Over the past decade there have been

Did you know that polar bears are the only bears that do not hibernate? Polar bears live In the cold, so
there is no need. However, lately the bears icy habitat has not been as cold as it should be. Although
these animals are incredible, climate change, ice thawing, and food sources declining is starting to
affect this species in a very negative way. The polar bear species is very unique when it comes to
where, and how it lives. Living mainly in places such as The United States, Canada, Greenland,
Norway, and Russia. Polar bears have elongated necks and smaller heads, black skin, and white fur.
Every part of their outside bodies are covered in fur except for their noses and mouths. They typically
over 1,000 pounds. Females are much smaller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because the females do not have enough food. If they do not have the right amount of protein
and energy, they really cannot reproduce. Also, the bear cubs cannot survive in a warmer climate.
Their small bodies are not able to handle the warmth when they should be living in the cold. There is
not enough breeding going on to keep this species safe and not endangered. The ideal living to keep
them reproducing is cold climate, enough food, and endless amounts of ice. Right now, polar bears are
losing everything that they need to

The King In Oedipus The King
In the popular Greek tragedy Oedipus the King, the plot shows how a single bad trait can lead to the
fall of a once great man. The author Sophocles portrays the story of the titular where a hero rises to
fame after solving the city of Thebes great riddle. The solution to the riddle frees Thebes of its curse
from the Sphinx and relieves the city s misery. Although Oedipus is praised and crowned king for
freeing the city, he is not entirely a good man. Oedipus is very arrogant, which causes him to make
several bad decisions. Through the story of Oedipus the King, Sophocles warns readers not to let
arrogance blind them from reality, for it will eventually result in tremendous suffering.
At the beginning of this Greek drama, Oedipus is blind due to his arrogance. For example, when the
city is in shambles and the Chorus marches around the altar praying to the gods, Oedipus walks in and
says to them, You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers (245). He believes he can answer the
people of Thebes prayers. Additionally, Oedipus is convinced he has god like powers because of his
role as king and his previous success in solving the Sphinx s riddle. His past leads him to believe he is
always right, which is exactly what happens when he encounters the prophet. Oedipus says, Blind, /
lost in the night, endless night that nursed you! / You can t hurt me or anyone else who sees the light /
you can never touch me (425 28). Oedipus attacks the prophet with insults for saying that he was the
one that killed Laius. Again, Oedipus reveals his exaggerated sense of his own abilities and believes
that it is impossible for him to be wrong. Oedipus considers himself to be one of the fortunate who are
able to see the light (427) and cannot be steered in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, in King
Oedipus case, his high ego leads to his great demise.
As this drama progresses, Oedipus begins connecting the dots and restoring his vision. When Jocasta
explains how her husband died to Oedipus, he says, I have a terrible fear the blind seer can see (823).
Oedipus is now suspecting that the prophecy is true because of the similarities between Laius death
and the man he had killed. He begins to stop worrying about his ego and

Gst Reform Case Study
The Grattan Institute s proposal to broaden the base and increase the rate of the goods and services tax
(GST) is rooted in principles of economic rationalism that fail to sufficiently consider political and
pragmatic concerns. Comprehending the manner in which policy networks in Australia have evolved
in recent decades is crucial towards placing the Grattan Institute s role into context as the
identification of key actors and political groups in this debate otherwise would be opaque. Issues of
constitutionality and political controversy naturally arise when considering this far reaching reform
due to pressures that the GST impose on the very essence of federalism and power in Australia. The
advantages of reforming the GST are largely derived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The heuristic and iterative approach of the policy cycle suggests that proposals to amend the GST
appear to be languishing during its early phases. Of the eight distinct segments that comprise the
policy cycle, it seems that the government has so far only progressed through the first four: the
identification of the issue, policy analysis, policy instruments, and consultation. The government has
certainly advanced to at least the second stage of the policy cycle as the Department of the Treasury
(2016, p. 1) has publicly released economic modelling asserting [a] tax mix switch involving income
tax cuts and increasing the GST to 15 per cent would deliver negligible GDP gains. Whilst it is
debateable as to whether the government can be considered as having entered the consultation phase,
the presence of numerous public comments on GST reform by Liberal Party Members of Parliament
indicates that the party room has likely discussed the topic in at least a peripheral sense. However, the
policy cycle does possess serious limitations that detract from its ability to serve as an effective prism
through which to judge government movement on the GST. A powerful criticism of the cycle is that it
ignores the role that non ministerial, non major party parliamentarians play in shaping the course of
public policy,

Social Media Wellness, By Ana Homayoun
Ana Homayoun, author of Social Media Wellness: Helping Teens and Tweens Thrive in an
Unbalanced Digital World, wrote an article in The New York Times about the conflicts parents face
with allowing their children to have smartphones. She gives insight on how to minimize the risk of
smartphone addiction by establishing guidelines and monitoring children s use. Reasons for Concern
In Homayoun s article, she cites a study done by Common Sense Media in 2016 which found that half
of teenagers felt addicted to their smartphones, 78 percent checked their devices hourly, and 72
percent of teens felt pressured to respond immediately to social media messages, texts, or any kind of
notification. Homayoun also cites another study done by Pew Research in 2015 which found that 74
percent of teenagers from 13 to 17 year olds had smartphones and a quarter of them felt like they were
online continuously. Distinguishing Appropriate Use from Abusive Behavior ... Show more content on

Many times children are using their devices for both school work and free time simultaneously.
Homayoun suggest looking for certain signs to see whether their smartphone use is counterproductive
or not. Hilarie Cash, a psychotherapist and the chief clinical officer at reSTART, says to look for
sudden intense anxiety, irritability, or even aggression when the device is taken away; lying, breaking
rules, skipping social events to spend more time on the phone, and sleep deprivation can also be red
flags for abuse. A 10 item questionnaire developed by South Korean researchers was published in the
journal PLOS One and is great tool for identifying those red flags and determining smartphone
addictions in

Ballad Of Birmingham Essay
Dudley Randall s poem, Ballad of Birmingham, takes the reader to its dilemma and environment
leading to the death of an innocent little girl. The poet guides his audience through the struggles,
hardships, and surroundings that his protagonist faced in Birmingham. The reader learns who or what
is the antagonist in this piece of literature that leads to the problem of the poem. Randall demonstrates
his thought of racial violence that is shown in the setting and situation of his poem, Ballad of
Birmingham. The poem is based on true events. On September 15, 1963, a church was bombed in the
city of Birmingham. The city got a nickname, Bombingham because of the bombing occurrences that
happened often by the KKK. This is why the poet, Dudley Randall, wrote a poem about this tragic
event because he had a strong feeling about people being mistreated for their color of skin. They
suffered and wanted to put an end to racism and segregation. This is what influenced them to march
and protest. In the poem, the little girl is asking her mother if she can go and march for their freedom
but the mother says no because it is too dangerous for her to go. She rather have her child go to church
and be safe than be in danger, but it turned out to be a tragic accident taking her daughter to church.
No, baby, no, you may not go,
For I fear those guns will fire.
But you may go to church instead
And sing in the children s choir. (Randall 13 16)
As a result, the poem is a ballad. A ballad is a form of poetry that is written as a song. It is meant to
sound like a nursery rhyme. Since it sounds very child like, it is easy to understand. The poem, Ballad
of Birmingham is telling a story about a little girl who wants to join the civil rights movement march
in Birmingham, but her mother does not let her attend which turns out to be a tragic ending. It makes a
reader surprised when they read the last stanzas because no one would have thought the little girl
would ve died because of how the poem is written in a song like structure.
By introducing the poem, the protagonist asks her mother a question:
Mother dear, may I go downtown
Instead of out to play,
And march the streets of Birmingham
In a Freedom March today? (Randall 1 4)

Unraveling the meaning of Kill the Indian, Save the Man There are so many different definitions of the word racism, but how does each peron define it? One individual, Richard Henry Pratt, clearly knew how to thoroughly define the word, Segregating any class or race of people apart from the rest of the people kills the progress of the segregated people or makes their growth very slow (Howard 2016). Unfortunately, we are still living in the repercussion of Pratt s word. The United States history is full of examples that have led to the ethnocentric development of the country. One of the most remote examples of this ethnocentric belief is displayed with the construction of off reservation boarding schools for Native Americans first started in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, by former general, Richard Henry Pratt. The purpose of the schools was to strip Native Americans of their cultural traditions and teach them the skills necessary to function in American Society. Pratt keyed this belief with the saying Kill the Indian, save the man, in order to justify his reasons to assimilate the Indians to the white culture. However, were the American Indians really forced to assimilate because society wanted to help them, or because they wanted America to be solely made of true Americans with American culture? How was the assimilation of the Indians satisfactory when it created cultural genocide? Having assimilated the Indian man did not save him, it merely replaced him. There is a ... • 5. A Study On High Rise Apartments Abstract High rise apartments are probably the fires posing most danger to life and property in residential areas. The spread of flame in high rise Buildings up the vertical walls has been studied computationally and experimentally all around the globe for decades now. Flames in the high rise building fires can travel up the shafts provided for lifts, through spacing in the interior walls, up and down the stairwells and ductwork provided for air conditioning but one of the quickest ways the flames spread to floor above is through the open windows via the exterior of the building. The depth of the balcony and the height of the spandrel wall greatly affects the spread of fire in the vertical direction. By changing the balcony depth and the height of spandrel wall, the intend of this study is to find an optimal configuration individually and as a combination of balcony and spandrel wall that reduces fire spread in the vertical direction via external wall. Introduction According to US Fire Administration, from 2007 to 2011, there were about 15,400 fires in high rise buildings in the United States of America [1] and more than 75% of these fires were residential buildings. More than 60%of these fires in the high rise buildings initiated below 50 feet i.e.at or below the fourth floor level. Throughout Hamlet, both the reader and young Hamlet are in a dilemma as to whether or not the ghost of Hamlet s father is a spirit sent to tempt and destroy Hamlet or if it is truly his father who has come to reveal the tragedy of his death so that revenge can be sought. On the one hand, it is rather easy to believe that the general Shakespearian attitudes and assumptions about apparitions are correct, that they are spirits sent from hell to tempt and wreak havoc on the living. On the other hand, however, the reader, like Hamlet, cannot help but feel compelled to listen to the ghost s tale about his death and his lack of peace. Because of the verbal power ... Even before Hamlet finds out that the ghost has been appearing on the castle walls, he says to Horatio My father methinks I see my father [...] in my mind s eye Has Hamlet been imagining his conversations with the ghost the whole time? Many of these challenges were indirectly related to the Church s power, as they indicted the Church s teachings rather than its authority. Those who disagreed with the Church formulated various theories that were oppositional to those of the Church. In 1609, Galileo made a revolutionary discovery. He utilized a telescope to gaze into the night sky, and found that the sun was located at the center of the solar system. Furthermore, he found that the planets revolved around the sun. These findings were against popular belief and that of the Church. Galileo promoted his theory of heliocentrism through various writings and conversations with individuals, but in 1633, ... The weakness in this evidence is that it defends Galileo s beliefs, contending that they may be true, but never addresses how it interacts with the beliefs of the Church. Even if this letter were a perfect source, it would still not be able to show that Galileo was not a heretic because Galileo never rejects the fact that his belief was different from the belief of the Church. Alexandria In Justine The representation of Alexandria in Lawrence Durrell s Justine In his novel, Justine, Lawrence Durrell gives his readers a new version of Alexandria, claiming that this is the real city . The novel would arouse many questions to an Alexandrian reader s mind; does Durrell factually represent the Cosmopolitan city of the time? Do his characters reflect the kind of life which the Alexandrian inhabitants had back then? Or is he giving, throughout Justine, a parallel mythical city which he created out of his imagination? The book clearly reflects Durrell s viewpoint regarding Alexandria; he exhibits it as an erotic city that enforces a state of total indulgence in sensual pleasures upon its inhabitants. Durrell presents two Alexandrias; the Arabic Alexandria which is always related to negative descriptions and always looked at with resentment and disgust, and the European Alexandria which comes along with the clean streets and the civilized characters. Durrell exhibits the Arab Quarters as an undefined mass; he does not name their streets or their cafes; he gives them no identity. In contrast, the European streets are named, for instance; Rue Foaad, Rue Sherief and Naby Daniel. The voice of the Arabs is shut; we do not get to see any Egyptian characters except for Nessim, whom we know lately in the Alexandria Quartet about his national treason; a person who has no sense of belonging towards Egypt. Nessim also is so westernized; the fact that Nessim s voice is heard in the novel goes back to his wealthy state and his high social rank that did enable him to neglect his Egyptian nationality and have a European lifestyle. Hence, Nessim does not represent the real Egyptian Alexandrian inhabitant of the time. Durrell s claim that only the city is real is questionable; you cannot write a novel as a representative of Alexandria and its inhabitants while choosing to foreground only the western voices and background the Arab ones. So Durrell s colonial ideology is shown in his writing; his tone is racial and biased against the Egyptians. Moreover, Durrell depicts Muslim Arabs as racist violent people who persecute ... The Functionalist Perspective On Emotions According to the functionalist perspective on emotions, emotions are defined as an attempt by the individual to establish, maintain, change, or terminate the relation between the environment and the individual (Frijda, 1986). Emotional development is strongly related with healthy psychological functioning, as research consistently supports the link between deficits in emotional competency and a variety of negative social and psychological outcomes such as increases in internalizing and externalizing symptomology (Garner Hinton, 2010; Perry Parish Zeman, 2011). It is because of this strong association that researchers have pushed for increased attention to identify components deemed necessary for adaptive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ever since I began to take an interest in politics, I always leaned towards the conservative side of the spectrum but everyone else around me identified as a liberal. As an African American male, it is hard to come out as a black republican, especially when you attend a Historically Black College. For the last couple of decades, the black community has tended to vote Democrat and when they see one of their own come out as a republican, they reject that person and instantly decry them. So many blacks who do share conservative views choose not to come out as republican, partly because of the backlash they expect to face. However, this is not the case of Senator Tim Scott. To equate media to epistemology is to say how media relates to how we understand knowledge. In this chapter, Neil Postman discusses how modern media has created an epistemological shift and whether it has affected us for better or for worse. Postman argues that this shift has altered the structure of discourse no differently than how every new medium before it has always done. The way we perceive truth has consistently changed along with a new change in medium as truth can be different things to different people in different time periods. It goes without saying that this overwhelming presence of music in the lives of so many people will have a psychological effect on American culture and our way of life. But how exactly is Hip Hop affecting us psychologically and culturally? The effects of music videos on adolescences have been the subject of controversy for decades. The common reason for the concern has been appropriately summed by Arnett (a Research Professor of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts), who explained, women are used as props for the illusive life the music video is portraying the artist to have. The concern that hip hop culture, as seen in music videos, has become heavily influential on young people s views of sexuality. The concern about mainstream hip hop music and music videos sexualizing women, in particular, is so omnipresent, many can even be referenced as rape culture by embedded sexual violence in the lyrics being disguised as pleasurable elements of hip hop. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a conspiracy is a secret plan made by two or more people that is harmful or illegal . There are so many conspiracy theories out there in the world starting as early as the 1800s. These theories range from scientific, terrorist, criminal, political, economic and business, and even religious conspiracies. The two conspiracy theories that I am talking about is the attack that changed the United States, as we knew it, the one that we believed was a terrorist attack, also known as 9/11, and the Sandy Hook shooting. The reasons are because the timelines do not add up, there are too many inconsistencies, and the benefits are too great. The attack on American soil on September 11, 2001 is one conspiracy theory to consider. The timelines given to the American people concerning the 9/11 attack do not make sense. Music has always played a substantial role in my life so I decided to use a music as the artifact of this assignment. To me, it is interesting to find out how a popular song can change and affect the opinions and thinking of its listeners through the use of a mass media outlet. The average person does not typically take an analytical approach to a song to figure out the message behind it. It is also interesting that a listener can still be persuaded by a song s message whether the listener knows it is happening or not. The use of song as a way to shed light on social situations has been around for many years and frequently these songs usually focus on issues on a more minor scale. Leningrad does the exact opposite by not only being used for entertainment but also by using a war that most people had grown up through and showing how we can help resolve these issues that caused the war. For example, when the city is in shambles and the Chorus marches around the altar praying to the gods, Oedipus walks in and says to them, You pray to the gods? Let me grant your prayers (245). He believes he can answer the people of Thebes prayers. Additionally, Oedipus is convinced he has god like powers because of his role as king and his previous success in solving the Sphinx s riddle. His past leads him to believe he is always right, which is exactly what happens when he encounters the prophet. Oedipus says, Blind, / lost in the night, endless night that nursed you! / You can t hurt me or anyone else who sees the light / you can never touch me (425 28). Oedipus attacks the prophet with insults for saying that he was the one that killed Laius. Again, Oedipus reveals his exaggerated sense of his own abilities and believes that it is impossible for him to be wrong. Oedipus considers himself to be one of the fortunate who are able to see the light (427) and cannot be steered in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, in King Oedipus case, his high ego leads to his great demise. As this drama progresses, Oedipus begins connecting the dots and restoring his vision. When Jocasta explains how her husband died to Oedipus, he says, I have a terrible fear the blind seer can see (823). Oedipus is now suspecting that the prophecy is true because of the similarities between Laius death and the man he had killed. He begins to stop worrying about his ego and ... • 42. Gst Reform Case Study The Grattan Institute s proposal to broaden the base and increase the rate of the goods and services tax (GST) is rooted in principles of economic rationalism that fail to sufficiently consider political and pragmatic concerns. Comprehending the manner in which policy networks in Australia have evolved in recent decades is crucial towards placing the Grattan Institute s role into context as the identification of key actors and political groups in this debate otherwise would be opaque. Issues of constitutionality and political controversy naturally arise when considering this far reaching reform due to pressures that the GST impose on the very essence of federalism and power in Australia. The advantages of reforming the GST are largely derived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The heuristic and iterative approach of the policy cycle suggests that proposals to amend the GST appear to be languishing during its early phases. Of the eight distinct segments that comprise the policy cycle, it seems that the government has so far only progressed through the first four: the identification of the issue, policy analysis, policy instruments, and consultation. The government has certainly advanced to at least the second stage of the policy cycle as the Department of the Treasury (2016, p. 1) has publicly released economic modelling asserting [a] tax mix switch involving income tax cuts and increasing the GST to 15 per cent would deliver negligible GDP gains. Whilst it is debateable as to whether the government can be considered as having entered the consultation phase, the presence of numerous public comments on GST reform by Liberal Party Members of Parliament indicates that the party room has likely discussed the topic in at least a peripheral sense. However, the policy cycle does possess serious limitations that detract from its ability to serve as an effective prism through which to judge government movement on the GST. A powerful criticism of the cycle is that it ignores the role that non ministerial, non major party parliamentarians play in shaping the course of public policy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A 10 item questionnaire developed by South Korean researchers was published in the journal PLOS One and is great tool for identifying those red flags and determining smartphone addictions in ... • 44. Ballad Of Birmingham Essay Dudley Randall s poem, Ballad of Birmingham, takes the reader to its dilemma and environment leading to the death of an innocent little girl. The poet guides his audience through the struggles, hardships, and surroundings that his protagonist faced in Birmingham. The reader learns who or what is the antagonist in this piece of literature that leads to the problem of the poem. Randall demonstrates his thought of racial violence that is shown in the setting and situation of his poem, Ballad of Birmingham. The poem is based on true events. On September 15, 1963, a church was bombed in the city of Birmingham. The city got a nickname, Bombingham because of the bombing occurrences that happened often by the KKK. This is why the poet, Dudley Randall, wrote a poem about this tragic event because he had a strong feeling about people being mistreated for their color of skin. They suffered and wanted to put an end to racism and segregation. This is what influenced them to march and protest. In the poem, the little girl is asking her mother if she can go and march for their freedom but the mother says no because it is too dangerous for her to go. She rather have her child go to church and be safe than be in danger, but it turned out to be a tragic accident taking her daughter to church. No, baby, no, you may not go, For I fear those guns will fire. But you may go to church instead And sing in the children s choir. (Randall 13 16) As a result, the poem is a ballad. A ballad is a form of poetry that is written as a song. It is meant to sound like a nursery rhyme. Since it sounds very child like, it is easy to understand. The poem, Ballad of Birmingham is telling a story about a little girl who wants to join the civil rights movement march in Birmingham, but her mother does not let her attend which turns out to be a tragic ending. It makes a reader surprised when they read the last stanzas because no one would have thought the little girl would ve died because of how the poem is written in a song like structure. By introducing the poem, the protagonist asks her mother a question: Mother dear, may I go downtown Instead of out to play, And march the streets of Birmingham In a Freedom March today?
