Essay On Psych Myths
There exists a prevailing myth that psychology is only a soft science. Soft science, indicating that the
practice of psychology is less rigorous, less precise, and, to some degree, less worthy than the hard
sciences chemistry, biology, physics. This study, conducted by Maureen A, McCarthy and Sue Frantz
called Challenging the Status Quo: Evidence that Introductory Psychology Can Dispel Myths ,
attempts to do just that. Their hypothesis was that when given the chance to take an introduction to
psychology course, participants would walk away with enough information to distinguish psych fact
from psych fiction. This would indeed prove how valuable of a science psychology is. In the study,
students enrolled in a community college were placed into two identical introductory psychology
courses. Over the course of the class, instructors taught a number of lessons that addressed popular
myths or stereotypes about human psychology and behavior. These included old adages such as
Humans only use 10% of the brain, Individuals commonly repress the memories of traumatic
experiences and People with schizophrenia have multiple personalities. Students filled out a
preliminary questionnaire to gage what they knew (or didn t know) on the very first day of class. They

the introductory psychology course as a vehicle for correcting myths and misperceptions that are held
by a large percentage of the general population. (Challenging the Status Quo) Their findings are in

Essay about Compact Flourescent Lamp and the Environment
Compact Flourescent Lamp and the Environment
Abstract
Technological advances have come a long way since the incandescent light bulb. Today, the compact
fluorescent lamp (CFL) is the most energy efficient light bulb on the market. In the beginning,
consumers had resistance toward the CFL. With governmental support in establishing energy efficient
lighting programs, the CFL have been able to stay in the market and improve throughout the years.
Introduction
With the advances in technology today, we are able to produce a variety of energy efficient products,
one of which is the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Having come a long way from the energy
absorbing incandescents, CFL is clearly the choice for the future. CFLs ... Show more content on

(Rigdon and Wadman, 1992). One must wonder why this new and improved technology is left in the
dark and why the resistance to the CFL?
Historical Significance
The incandescent light bulbs dates back to Thomas Edison s 1879 design which was a marvelous
invention for the 19th Century. The incandescent light bulb heats a filament by electric resistance
inside a sealed glass globe and makes the thin tungsten wire glow white hot (Luoma, 1991). The
incandescent blub is very inefficient because only 10% of the electricity flowing into the filament
becomes light and the remaining nine tenths is lost at heat (Luoma, 1991). A standard blub is hot to the
touch because it expends more than 90% of the electrical energy keeping its tungsten filament hot
enough to glow (Roodman, 1993).
A more advanced alternative to the standard incandescent light bulb is the CFL. Fluorescent tubes,
developed in the 1930 s, utilize a chemical physical process involving the ionization of argon gas
(Luoma, 1991). The fluorescent bulbs use one fifth to one third as much electricity to deliver the same
number of lumens as conventional incandescent light bulbs (Petrowski, 1995). However, fluorescent s
adaptability to everyday household lamps have been hampered by the bulkiness of its long tubes and
by problems with flickering and unpleasant light. With

challenging subject matter and overcoming academic struggles cause some parts of this educational
effect, but one s teachers have some of the greatest influence in education. The instructor teaches with
a personal worldview, one which will incidentally impact the students. For example, some private
schools teach the religion of Christianity, where a living God designed the universe, while public
schools are required to teach the religion of evolution, where everything exists due to a chance clash
of lifeless chemicals. This disparity in beliefs about the universe s origin fosters strongly opposing
ideas about topics such as morals and the meaning of life that are fundamental to how a person
decides to handle any given situation. The teacher can also inspire a growth or a fixed mindset in
students. Psychology professor Carol Dweck invented this idea of

Ans: the random variable is being used in statistics and probability most of the time. This is also called
stochastic or aleatory variable as his has an ability of making its values vary according to the subject

Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The...
We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting
rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply
this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some
utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept.
A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both
players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of
such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other
players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a
utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in
predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann
Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary):
completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a
player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility
maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use.
While the axioms of payoff rationality clearly imply consistency of behaviour, since transitivity and

Analysis of a Passage from The Grapes of Wrath Essay
Depicting the Dust Bowl exodus, The Grapes of Wrath is a literary masterpiece. Development and
hierarchy are portrayed. In the passage to be studied, almost at the beginning of the novel, Tom Joad,
who has just been released from prison, discovered his abandoned house. Travelling with Casy, a
former preacher, they met Muley Graves , one of his former neighbours who refused to leave the
country, after people have been tractored off. Hardly the only one to speak, Muley explained how he
then lived alone, wandering from one empty house to another. A certain evolution is present
throughout the passage that can be compared to a human being?s life. First, birth can be paralleled
with a kind of creation. Then, the adult is the one who makes a ... Show more content on

This land becomes a part of them, of the family, of their lives, and Muley expresses the weighty
significance of that place, since he ?went in the room where Joe was born? (l30 1) so as to recollect
this arrival. Being at the very place where his child was born means to remember why he decided to
live there. He was the person in charge, and for that reason, he had to act for his new born baby who
was frail. Then, children have to discover the world, as it is something new for them.
Furthermore, Tom can be compared to a young child. Indeed, he has just been released from prison,
thus, he discovers life again. Definitely, he takes pleasure in cooking the meat, and in eating it: ?I
think we better eat her now? (l37), ?le?s eat this meat ?fore it?s smaller?n a cooked mouse? (l77 8). As
a child, he is only preoccupied by one thing, here it is the meat, and nothing else. This is also
noticeable in his discourse. Undeniably, he does not really communicate with the two others: ?Joad
turned the meat, and his eyes were inward? (l11). He is self centred. Therefore, at that step in the
novel, he can be associated with a child.
Moreover, this kind of selfishness is also obvious in the fact that he is not listening to what is said, or
actually, does not seem interested, as if he were not part of the debate. He is not aware of the others
yet. When he suggests that they ?better eat [the]

I happen to be sympathetic to that argument, but it s not the one I want to make here. I think there is
another way to assess the social virtue of pop culture, one that looks at media as a kind of cognitive
workout, not as a series of life lessons. There may indeed be more negative messages in the
mediasphere today. But that s not the only way to evaluate whether our television shows or video
games are having a positive impact. Just as important if not more important is the kind of thinking you
have to do to make sense of a cultural experience. That is where the Sleeper Curve becomes visible.

we associate with quality entertainment The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Murphy Brown, Frasier the
intelligence arrives fully formed in the words and actions of the characters on screen. They say witty
things to one another and avoid lapsing into tired sitcom cliches, and we smile along in our living

the sentences they re saying, there s no intellectual labor involved in enjoying the show as a viewer.

Essay about Cleaner Alternative Transportation
When people think pollution, most think straight to automobiles producing harmful emissions which
contribute to global warming or climate change. Well, this is true. Motor vehicles account for about
half of the toxic air pollutant emissions in the United States. A large part of these toxic air pollutants is
the need to rely on oil as a fuel source. The fact that oil is still the main source of energy for things
like automobiles, when there are other alternatives like electric vehicles, creates many problems
within our society. The United States dependency on oil causes incidents like the Deepwater Horizon.
The estimated amount of oil released stood at 4.9 million barrels and polluted the area significantly.

Automobiles have since evolved and become almost a necessity for people. While they have become
of major importance, they also hold many drawbacks to our environment. They are the leading cause
of transportation emissions and they generate a majority of America s global warming emissions. Even
though air pollution emissions from motor vehicles have dropped considerably since 1950,
Automobiles still produce about 60% of US transportation emissions and generate nearly 30% of
America s global warming emissions (Car Emissions and Global Warming). The average conventional
automobile can be seen as fairly gas inefficient. Compared to a hybrid electric vehicle, conventional
cars produce about 1.5 times more greenhouse gas emissions and costs more in fuel costs. Within a
100 mile trip, conventional vehicles produce about 87 lb CO2, hybrid electric vehicles produce 57 lb
CO2, plug in hybrid electric vehicles produce 62 lb CO2, and all electric vehicles produce 54 lb CO2
(see table 1). This shows that hybrid and electric cars produce less greenhouse gas emissions and costs
less for fuel, compared to a conventional pure gas powered vehicle.

So it s time to take a step back and think why would the color be red? It s actually really simple red is
a color that catches the eye on most background colors perfect examples would be human skin color

bulb or led. That same color is also used to indicate importance like a stop sign for an example is that

watching reruns of any show that had to do with that aspect. I would take out my notebook as if it

the lawyers. The thought of being able to help someone while also punishing those who broke the law
was fulfilling to me.
To become a lawyer it requires attending college. A bachelor degree is needed and takes about four
years to obtain. Next, is taking the LSAT also known as the Law School Admission Test. After doing
so you must proceed to attend law school. A minimum of three is required to earn your Juris Doctor
degree. Finally, it is essential to take the state bar exam in order to legally practice law. However,
when taking the exam and passing only means you can practice law according to the state you took the

the number one law school in the United States. Harvard and Stanford were also highly ranked and

The Caliph Harun Al Rashid
Aside from this general emphasis on the value of cleverness and intelligence however, the story of the
Caliph Harun al Rashid and his much exalted qadi Abu Yusuf also highlights an interesting point about
religion and the works to follow or otherwise remain within the confines of certain religious mandates
while simultaneously being able to pursue whatever personal ends one desires. Though the qadi claims
that the actions of the Caliph all fall within accordance with the Qur an and the teachings of Islam, the
series of events required to allow the Caliph to consummate a marriage with the slave girl which
involve such workarounds as the ordering of her marriage to a male slave in order to divorce them and
avoid the three month period of legal purification (Schroeder, 1955) required for sexual conduct, as
well as ordering the male slave to become the property of the girl in order to annul their marriage
when the male slave refuses to divorce her on his own it certainly seems that these actions probably
violate the spirit of the law, even if they avoid violation of the letter. The story itself makes a
somewhat humorous and sly mention of this fact towards the end of the tale, confirming that as to the
expiation of the oaths, Abu Yusuf s ruling would hardly be confirmed by jurists of the Shafi i school,
(Schroeder, 1955) but noting that Abu Yusuf treated it in accord with the views of his own, the Hanafi
school. In other words, whether or not the actions of the qadi

The personnel responsible for process selection must be cognizant of the effect of quality
characteristic variances on the quality of the product.
This process, developed by Dr. Taguchi, Robust design, which is based upon loss function, Process
capability analysis, which is an important step for selection of processes for manufacture of the
components and the product, Process capability analysis cannot be completed without ascertaining
that the process is in control. The effect of measurement error should also be taken into consideration.
Emphasis is given to modeling of errors, estimation of error variances, and the effect of measurement
errors on decisions related to quality. After process selection is completed, optimal means for
obtaining the quality characteristics must be determined; the emphasis is on the methodologies used
and the development of objective functions and solution procedures used by various researchers. The
next step in the methodology is process setting, in which the actual process mean is brought as close
as possible to the optimal value determined earlier. Once the process setting is completed,
manufacture of the components can begin. During the entire period of manufacture, the mean and
variance of the process must be kept at their respective target values, which are accomplished, through
process control, using control charts. Design of experiments, can be used in any of the steps

lower frequencies and they require need more energy to power the devices. The clarity of signal is
normally good and less interference than the other 802.11 standards. The cost for 802.11a is more
expensive than both 802.11b and 802.11g. However, it is very worth because it provides the great
speed. 802.11a is not compatible with other types of standard. The users have to have the Wi Fi card to
receive the 802.11a signals.
2. 802.11b
802.11b is the type of standard that is less expensive, faster, and easier to use than the other kind of
standard. This technology includes a wireless router that is able to send radio signals over the air to
other computers or electronic devices. Generally, Wi Fi router is connected to computer server or
broadband internet connection. 802.11b can distribute speeds up to 11 mega bytes per second. This
standard delivers a signal for about 50 meters (150 feet). The range depends on the area and condition
whether you are in an apartment building, having your router on another floor than your computer or
being in open area. 802.11b has the good signal because it has the lower frequencies, so it will be able
to move through the walls and other obstacle. The cost expended for this technology is affordable.
3. 802.11g
802.11g uses a 2.4 to 2.5

Introduction: The acceleration toward the center that keeps objects in uniform circular motion
(circular motion at a constant speed) is called centripetal acceleration. An understanding of centripetal
acceleration was one of the key elements that led to Newton s formulation of the law of universal
gravitation.
Question: How is centripetal acceleration related to radius, mass, and velocity?

Child Health and Well Being
Introduction
The purpose of this project is how we can ensure the health and safety of children in a childcare
setting. We have to consider the welfare of every child who will be under our care once we are
working in Childcare. We have to follow some certain guidelines and this project will help me to
outline the requirements necessary to provide for the health and well being of the children, including
their protection and ensuring a safe environment for them. This project will further discuss the Health
and Safety Regulations, some Legislation involved in Childcare and we have to come up with some

Childcare Act 1991
The Child Care Act of 1991 was the first piece of Irish legislation to focus on children. It defines a
child as someone who is under 18 years of age (unless they are married). The Act is an extensive piece
of legislation, and it is not within the remit of this text to discuss all aspects of it. For purposes, we
will focus on Part VII of the Act, which defines a pre school child and pre school service.
Pre school child: a child under six years of age who is not attending a national school or school
providing an educational program similar to national school.
Pre school service: any pre school, playgroup, day nursery, crèche, daycare or other similar service
which caters for preschool children. These include sessional, full time and drop in services.
The Child Care Act of 1991 is very important in relation to the protection of children. The Act puts a
legal responsibility on any person charged with the care of any child to act in the child s best interests
this is the most fundamental requirement of every person who works with children with whatever
situation. It is also the primary legislation regulating the childcare policy.
Childcare (Preschool) Regulations 2006
The Childcare (Pre School Services) (No. 2) Regulations 2006 provides for standard of service,
upkeep and care for any setting defined as pre school. The regulations define a pre school child to be

A Rose For Emily, By William Faulkner Essay
Isolate is defined as to remain alone or keep separate from others whereas solitude is the state of being
alone. Isolation and solitude are tremendous, effective and beating emotions. They forces the capacity
to devastate a people life by overpowering it with despair and murkiness. A short story, A Rose for
Emily, by William Faulkner, was initially published on April 30, 1930. William Cuthbert Faulkner was
born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25, 1897. As he experienced childhood in New
Albany, Mississippi, the Southern culture impacted to him. Through his works such a Sartoris (book,
1931), The Sound and The Fury (1929), As I Lay Dying (ballad, 1930), The Sanctuary (1931), and A
Famle (1954), he delineated sequentially the rotting Southern culture. Nathaniel Hawthorne, an
American creator of Young Goodman Brown, born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts,
experienced childhood in an exceptionally strict Puritan family, which is the place his motivation
originated from. Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street (1853) is a short story composed by
Herman Melville. He was Born in 1819 in New York City. He did most of his learning on his own,
reading literature, technical manuals, historical textbooks and religious texts. The story echoes
Melville s self criticism of his current work. In the stories: A Rose for Emily, Young Goodman Brown

Characteristics of Drama
History of Drama
Ancient Drama
The origins of Western drama can be traced to the celebratory music of 6th century BC Attica, the
Greek region centered on Athens. Although accounts of this period are inadequate, it appears that the
poet Thespis developed a new musical form in which he impersonated a single character and engaged
a chorus of singer dancers in dialogue. As the first composer and soloist in this new form, which came
to be known as tragedy, Thespis can be considered both the first dramatist and the first actor. Of the
hundreds of works produced by Greek tragic playwrights, only 32 plays by the three major innovators
in this new art form survive. Aeschylus created the possibility of developing conflict between
characters by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subject matter was drawn from nature and natural man (such as the supposedly untouched Native
American). Perhaps one of the best examples of Romantic drama is Faust (Part I, 1808; Part II, 1832)
by the German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Based on the classic legend of the man who
sells his soul to the devil, this play of epic proportions depicts humankind s attempt to master all
knowledge and power in its constant struggle with the universe. The Romantics focused on emotion
rather than rationality, drew their examples from a study of the real world rather than the ideal, and
glorified the idea of the artist as a mad genius unfettered by rules. Romanticism thus gave rise to a
vast array of dramatic literature and production that was often undisciplined and that often substituted
emotional manipulation for substantial ideas.
Romanticism first appeared in Germany, a country with little native theatre other than rustic farces
before the 18th century. By the 1820s Romanticism dominated the theatre of most of Europe. Many of
the ideas and practices of Romanticism were evident in the late 18th century Sturm und Drang
movement of Germany led by Goethe and the dramatist Friedrich Schiller. These plays had no single
style but were generally strongly emotional, and, in their experimentation with form, laid the
groundwork for the rejection of Neo Classicism. The plays of the

Japonisme And Western Art
The term Japonisme, refers to the influence of Japanese art on Western art ( Japonisme ). During the
second half of the nineteenth century, there was an outbreak of admiration for all things Japanese;
being that the hidden works of Japan had finally been unveiled to the Western population. In 1859,
Japan opened its doors to the concept of overseas trade in turn allowing for Oriental art and household
goods to come flooding into Europe. Japanese prints became an immediate hit amongst Western
artists; being that they were significantly different from the works of art in which were prevalent
within the West. The bright, exotic colors were immensely captivating and the Japanese notion of
space opened the eyes of many artists. Vincent Van Gogh did not bat much of an eye towards the
concept of Japonisme at first. It was not until his move to Paris in early 1886 that he became fully
submerged/engaged within the idea Japanese art. It was in Paris where his eyes became open to
artworks that were not specifically Western, Van Gogh had begun to see that the Oriental works were
equal to the great masterpieces of Western art history ( Inspiration from Japan ). Prior to this point, his
views towards Oriental art mirrored that of his brother as they believed that Japanese art is something
like the primitives ( Inspiration from Japan ). The notion of viewing Japanese works of art as primitive
could have been what sparked the interest of many artists of this time alongside Van Gogh and

Domestic Violence Against Women in Canada Essay
Introduction Intimate partner violence has been a significant issue for centuries in all countries. Since
1974, nearly 2,600 spousal homicides have been recorded in Canada (Bunge, 2002). Of these
homicides, more than three quarters have been against women. Although through feminism and the
women s liberation movement, there has been a slight improvement in the incidences of violence
against women, there has also been a drastic change in the perception of the issue by society. After
reviewing the most recent literature on violence against women and victimization through intimate
partners, it has become prevalent that there are now two crucial stances that are taken. The first
position is that of the women being victimized as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, changing nature of intimate relationships, increasing gender equality, legislative
changes, policy and procedural changes, etc. (Bunge, 2002). Between 1974 and 2000, the homicide
rate for women decreased by 62% and the homicide rate for men dropped by more than half 55%
(Bunge, 2002) which demonstrates the drastic decline in intimate partner violence including
homicides. Secondly, one of the general concepts behind the literature examined would be the idea
that intimate partner violence is now going through a process of normalization. For instance, popular
women s magazines frame domestic violence in a way that normalizes the victims s responsibility
while ignoring the role of the abuser and society (Berns, 2001). Individuals construct their own
conceptions of what is normal and acceptable. These conceptions, what Cicourel (1968) calls
background expectancies govern all social interaction (Berns, 2001). With the norms that society
creates being the main control of interaction amongst society, it is clear that by allowing the
perspective of intimate partner violence as normal will create unawareness about the issue and may
perpetuate further issues. Women who have respect and power outside the home through community
activities, including participation in microcredit schemes, are less likely to be abused than those who
do not (Jewkes, 2002).

Children In The Chocolate War
Adults within The Chocolate War bring a variety of both positive and negative messages for the
adolescent characters to develop. In terms of positivity impacting Jerry, his father plays an important
role in helping him decide what he does not want to be. In the novel Jerrys mother had died recently to
a sickness. This resulted in his father acting like a sleepwalker going through the motions and like a
puppet being maneuvered by invisible strings (The Chocolate War: 48). To Jerry this is brought back
up at the end of the chapter where he fears that he will become like his father. After seeing some of the

Essay about Nathaniel Hawthorne s Use of Symbolism
Nathaniel Hawthorne is a prominent writer who uses many different elements in his works. He uses
elements such as symbolism, figurative language, metaphor, irony and etc. to make his work
prominent. In the works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses symbols for secret sin in The Scarlet Letter,
The Minister s Black Veil, and Dr. Heidegger s Experiment.
As seen in The Scarlet letter, the symbol for secret sin is the Scarlet letter A. The A represents the sin
in which Hester commits adultery with the town s minister, Dimmesdale. One example of secret sin is
when Hester first walks out of prison; for the first time she wore the letter A on her breast to show her
crime. The A very well represents her secret sin. Even Dimmesdale curves ... Show more content on

In addition, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many symbols in The Scarlet Letter.
Moreover, the symbol of secret sin also appears in The Minister s Black Veil. When the people of the
town first saw Mr. Hooper wearing the black veil, they were all wondering why he would wear such
thing. To Mr. Hooper, the black veil means deceit and sins to those who can not separate themselves
from their sins. One example is when he is wearing the black veil to the wedding, and everyone is
kind of skeptic about why he is wearing it but in reality, he wore it to remind everyone of their sins.
Because of this, people call him evil, and he soon became an outcast. The black veil can also represent
his own sin that he committed in the past in which he can never forgive himself. Symbols for secret
sin are once again used in Nathanial Hawthorne s works.
Additionally, symbols for serest sin are also use in Dr. Heidegger s Experiment. In this story, Dr.
Heidegger s sin is playing with God because he basically made up a story about the whole Fountain of
Youth to his friends. But for him, this is all an experiment because he wants to see how his friends will
react to their pretend younger selves, and if they have changed their personality. One example is when
they drank the Water of Youth; Dr. Heidegger s friends became addicted to the water asking for more.
Dr. Heidegger is playing God to his friends just for his experiment. Once again, Nathaniel Hawthorne

The Function Of The Thyroid Gland
Hypothyroidism occurs when there is deficient thyroid hormone secretion by the thyroid gland. It is
also referred to as an underactive thyroid. This paper will discuss the function of the thyroid gland, as
well as the causes, classification, risk factors, clinical features, laboratory values, diagnostic imaging,
and treatment of hypothyroidism.
The thyroid gland is located anteriorly in the lower neck, just inferior to the laryngeal prominence,
which is also referred to as the Adam s apple. It extends from the fifth cervical vertebra to the first
thoracic vertebra. The gland varies in shape, ranging from an H shape to a U shape. It is formed by
two extended lateral lobes connected by a median isthmus.
The thyroid is an endocrine gland which functions to regulate metabolism in the body. Three
hormones are produced: triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and calcitonin. T3 and T4 increase the
basal metabolic rate in the body. These hormones also affect brain development, body temperature,
breathing, cholesterol levels, heart and nervous system functions, menstrual cycles, muscle strength,
skin dryness, and weight (National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service, 2013).
Calcitonin maintains calcium levels in the blood.
Thyroid hormones are produced by iodine metabolism. The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is
produced by the pituitary gland and releases thyroid hormones into the bloodstream when necessary.

The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has a mission to protect the welfare of wage earners,
job seekers, and retirees. They also improve working conditions and ensure work related benefits and
rights. The DOL has many laws and reregulation s protecting workers that range from the Fair Labor
Standards Act, which sets standards for wages and overtime pay, to the Occupational Safety and
Health Act, which focuses on workplace safety and health. With the wide range that the DOL has
employees can feel that they have standards in place to ensure fair pay, fair treatment, and a safe

Analysis Of George Ritzer s The Fast Food Industry
George Ritzer, a notable American sociologist who is most known for his concept of
McDonaldization. His ideas are based upon Weber s idea of rationalization, the historical process by
which nature, society, and individual action are increasingly mastered by an orientation to planning,
technical procedure and rational action; through the eyes of the fast food industry. McDonaldization is
the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more
sectors of American society as well as the rest if the world. Ritzer s idea of McDonaldization is
developed through his five concepts of: efficiency, calculability, predictability, control by technology,
and the irrationality of rationality.
What society is faced with are these specific questions: Is McDonaldization good for society? and
How will it affect our future? These questions will be unanswered for many years to come as humans
digest the likability of social control.
When someone thinks of McDonald s, what do they usually think about? The Big Mac, French fries,
Chicken McNuggets. However, what does not come to mind is the influence of McDonald s on
various aspects of life and society; health, media, and even education. An example of Ritzer s idea of
McDonaldization is the idea of McEducation; relates to colleges and students. Through Ritzer s
central concepts, education will be evaluated as either rational or irrational.

Some people who have made it out of the prison have tried to swim in the bay, but since they were
accustomed to warm waters they either died of hypothermia or drowned. If a prisoner was found
escaping, they usually were put in the hole, which is a cell that has a solid door to block off all light.
The cells in the hole have no bed, no blankets, no AC which made it cold. Prisoners were not allowed
to wear clothes except for boxer shorts. A day in the life of a prisoner at Alcatraz is pretty tough. At
6:30 AM the prisoners woke up and tidied up their cells. At 6:45 they went to the mess hall to eat

Dieter s job involved a repetitive task: using a straight pole with a hook on the end to pull out the
polystyrene bin liner from each empty kiwifruit bin as it passed by on the conveyor line. After this
task, the bins moved along on the conveyor at a slow and steady pace until they reached a stacking
machine. This machine was an automatic forklift that stacked five empty bins on top of one another
ready for moving along to be loaded on to trucks for transport back to the orchard. Here they were
filled again, and the process repeated. On the night of the incident, Dieter had started his shift on time

Description Of A Person s Personality

ESTJ vs. INFJ What is the Difference? A person s personality is his or her essence. It is what guides
decisions, emotions, and even thoughts. Some may wonder if it is possible to explore every nuance of
such a complex part of a being, but there are ways to determine what type of personality a person has,
and then branch off into a more detailed examination of that person specifically. Combined with other
factors, such as personality disorders and the environment that someone has grown up in, the Myers
Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, test and analysis can determine an accurate portrayal of a personality.
Created in 1943 by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, it is a system made up of four basic
functions and sub functions that combine to make a personality type. The mother and daughter team
constructed it off of Jung s theories (History 2). Based on this system, one of the most common
personality types in the US population is called an ESTJ, and one of the least common personality
types is called an INFJ. There are many differences and similarities between these two types. An ESTJ
personality, overall, is practical, fact based, and outgoing, whereas an INFJ personality is more private
and makes decisions based on feelings; however, both are organized people who make good leaders
and are capable of great success in roles that involve helping others.

  • 2. Essay On Psych Myths There exists a prevailing myth that psychology is only a soft science. Soft science, indicating that the practice of psychology is less rigorous, less precise, and, to some degree, less worthy than the hard sciences chemistry, biology, physics. This study, conducted by Maureen A, McCarthy and Sue Frantz called Challenging the Status Quo: Evidence that Introductory Psychology Can Dispel Myths , attempts to do just that. Their hypothesis was that when given the chance to take an introduction to psychology course, participants would walk away with enough information to distinguish psych fact from psych fiction. This would indeed prove how valuable of a science psychology is. In the study, students enrolled in a community college were placed into two identical introductory psychology courses. Over the course of the class, instructors taught a number of lessons that addressed popular myths or stereotypes about human psychology and behavior. These included old adages such as Humans only use 10% of the brain, Individuals commonly repress the memories of traumatic experiences and People with schizophrenia have multiple personalities. Students filled out a preliminary questionnaire to gage what they knew (or didn t know) on the very first day of class. They were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These were the results of the first test. From the second test, the one taken at the end of the course, participants reported disagreement with almost all of the myths. One year on, the third test, the same result. To quote the article directly, In general, the results of this study demonstrate promise for using the introductory psychology course as a vehicle for correcting myths and misperceptions that are held by a large percentage of the general population. • 3. Essay about Compact Flourescent Lamp and the Environment Compact Flourescent Lamp and the Environment Abstract Technological advances have come a long way since the incandescent light bulb. Today, the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is the most energy efficient light bulb on the market. In the beginning, consumers had resistance toward the CFL. With governmental support in establishing energy efficient lighting programs, the CFL have been able to stay in the market and improve throughout the years. Introduction With the advances in technology today, we are able to produce a variety of energy efficient products, one of which is the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). Having come a long way from the energy absorbing incandescents, CFL is clearly the choice for the future. CFLs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Rigdon and Wadman, 1992). One must wonder why this new and improved technology is left in the dark and why the resistance to the CFL? Historical Significance The incandescent light bulbs dates back to Thomas Edison s 1879 design which was a marvelous invention for the 19th Century. The incandescent light bulb heats a filament by electric resistance inside a sealed glass globe and makes the thin tungsten wire glow white hot (Luoma, 1991). The incandescent blub is very inefficient because only 10% of the electricity flowing into the filament becomes light and the remaining nine tenths is lost at heat (Luoma, 1991). A standard blub is hot to the touch because it expends more than 90% of the electrical energy keeping its tungsten filament hot enough to glow (Roodman, 1993). A more advanced alternative to the standard incandescent light bulb is the CFL. Fluorescent tubes, developed in the 1930 s, utilize a chemical physical process involving the ionization of argon gas (Luoma, 1991). The fluorescent bulbs use one fifth to one third as much electricity to deliver the same number of lumens as conventional incandescent light bulbs (Petrowski, 1995). However, fluorescent s adaptability to everyday household lamps have been hampered by the bulkiness of its long tubes and by problems with flickering and unpleasant light. With ... My American Journey By Wes Moore [A] recent author and public figure...[Colin Powell, wrote a] book, My American Journey, [that] helped me harmonize my understanding of America s history and my aspiration to serve her in uniform...Powell gave me another way to think about the American dilemma and, more than that, another way to think about my own life (Moore 131 2). Author Wes Moore wrote the book The Other Wes Moore, both an autobiography and a biography about a man who shares his name and has a similar backstory, to demonstrate how people s destinies are primarily influenced by the environment into which they are born. Examining stories including and similar to those of both Wes Moores, as well as reflecting on one s own personal experience, can provide insight into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, even after his positive experience at Job Corps, Moore was so scarred by the environment in which he was raised that he ended up in prison for life without parole. Because the two Wes Moores had such different friends, they ended up becoming separate people and experienced differing levels of success in their lives. Most people form many of their friendships at school, but even outside of friends, individuals education alters their mentalities. Without a doubt, actions like conquering challenging subject matter and overcoming academic struggles cause some parts of this educational effect, but one s teachers have some of the greatest influence in education. The instructor teaches with a personal worldview, one which will incidentally impact the students. For example, some private schools teach the religion of Christianity, where a living God designed the universe, while public schools are required to teach the religion of evolution, where everything exists due to a chance clash of lifeless chemicals. This disparity in beliefs about the universe s origin fosters strongly opposing ideas about topics such as morals and the meaning of life that are fundamental to how a person decides to handle any given situation. The teacher can also inspire a growth or a fixed mindset in students. Psychology professor Carol Dweck invented this idea of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Is The Rational Actor Hypothesis Used Throughout The... We can usefully predict the behaviour of others in group contexts by assuming that they are acting rationally. This is the rational actor hypothesis used throughout the social sciences. To usefully apply this idea we need a definition of rationality; the one we will analyze is that people maximize some utility in deciding on an action. To understand what is meant by utility consider the following concept. A payoff is a reward in a game that has a definite expected worth (e.g. money) that is known to both players of a game. A utility is then something which causes payoff maximization, the maximization of such payoffs by players, given the information available to them plus the assumption that other players are playing to maximize their payoffs. A key assumption of the model is that maximizing a utility leads to a fixed set of preferences, in order for any sort of uniqueness to be present in predictions. This idea of rationality through payoff maximization rests on the Von Neumann Morgenstern utility theorem. This theorem says that given four axioms (defined in the Glossary): completeness, transitivity, continuity, and independence, there always exists a utility function which a player in a game maximizes when making a decision. My contention in this paper is that utility maximization and therefore the rational actor hypothesis is too broad of an idea to be of practical use. In the passage to be studied, almost at the beginning of the novel, Tom Joad, who has just been released from prison, discovered his abandoned house. Travelling with Casy, a former preacher, they met Muley Graves , one of his former neighbours who refused to leave the country, after people have been tractored off. Hardly the only one to speak, Muley explained how he then lived alone, wandering from one empty house to another. He was the person in charge, and for that reason, he had to act for his new born baby who was frail. Then, children have to discover the world, as it is something new for them. Furthermore, Tom can be compared to a young child. Indeed, he has just been released from prison, thus, he discovers life again. Definitely, he takes pleasure in cooking the meat, and in eating it: ?I think we better eat her now? (l37), ?le?s eat this meat ?fore it?s smaller?n a cooked mouse? (l77 8). As a child, he is only preoccupied by one thing, here it is the meat, and nothing else. This is also noticeable in his discourse. Undeniably, he does not really communicate with the two others: ?Joad turned the meat, and his eyes were inward? (l11). He is self centred. Therefore, at that step in the novel, he can be associated with a child. Moreover, this kind of selfishness is also obvious in the fact that he is not listening to what is said, or actually, does not seem interested, as if he were not part of the debate. He is not aware of the others yet. When he suggests that they ?better eat [the] ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Cleaner Alternative Transportation When people think pollution, most think straight to automobiles producing harmful emissions which contribute to global warming or climate change. Well, this is true. Motor vehicles account for about half of the toxic air pollutant emissions in the United States. A large part of these toxic air pollutants is the need to rely on oil as a fuel source. The fact that oil is still the main source of energy for things like automobiles, when there are other alternatives like electric vehicles, creates many problems within our society. Though the qadi claims that the actions of the Caliph all fall within accordance with the Qur an and the teachings of Islam, the series of events required to allow the Caliph to consummate a marriage with the slave girl which involve such workarounds as the ordering of her marriage to a male slave in order to divorce them and avoid the three month period of legal purification (Schroeder, 1955) required for sexual conduct, as well as ordering the male slave to become the property of the girl in order to annul their marriage when the male slave refuses to divorce her on his own it certainly seems that these actions probably violate the spirit of the law, even if they avoid violation of the letter. The story itself makes a somewhat humorous and sly mention of this fact towards the end of the tale, confirming that as to the expiation of the oaths, Abu Yusuf s ruling would hardly be confirmed by jurists of the Shafi i school, (Schroeder, 1955) but noting that Abu Yusuf treated it in accord with the views of his own, the Hanafi school. As the first composer and soloist in this new form, which came to be known as tragedy, Thespis can be considered both the first dramatist and the first actor. Subject matter was drawn from nature and natural man (such as the supposedly untouched Native American). Perhaps one of the best examples of Romantic drama is Faust (Part I, 1808; Part II, 1832) by the German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Based on the classic legend of the man who sells his soul to the devil, this play of epic proportions depicts humankind s attempt to master all knowledge and power in its constant struggle with the universe. The Romantics focused on emotion rather than rationality, drew their examples from a study of the real world rather than the ideal, and glorified the idea of the artist as a mad genius unfettered by rules. Romanticism thus gave rise to a vast array of dramatic literature and production that was often undisciplined and that often substituted emotional manipulation for substantial ideas. Romanticism first appeared in Germany, a country with little native theatre other than rustic farces before the 18th century. By the 1820s Romanticism dominated the theatre of most of Europe. Many of the ideas and practices of Romanticism were evident in the late 18th century Sturm und Drang movement of Germany led by Goethe and the dramatist Friedrich Schiller. During the second half of the nineteenth century, there was an outbreak of admiration for all things Japanese; being that the hidden works of Japan had finally been unveiled to the Western population. In 1859, Japan opened its doors to the concept of overseas trade in turn allowing for Oriental art and household goods to come flooding into Europe. However, online learning cannot be a complete replacement to traditional learning. Users/learners would just lean on these easily available tools and the rewiring of brain for critical analysis might get effected in a long run and influence further generations genetically. If in case learners totally rely on the modern educational tools, then the classroom teaching may not exist. As a result there will be unemployment to the good qualified and potential teachers. • 27. Domestic Violence Against Women in Canada Essay Introduction Intimate partner violence has been a significant issue for centuries in all countries. Since 1974, nearly 2,600 spousal homicides have been recorded in Canada (Bunge, 2002). Of these homicides, more than three quarters have been against women. Although through feminism and the women s liberation movement, there has been a slight improvement in the incidences of violence against women, there has also been a drastic change in the perception of the issue by society. After reviewing the most recent literature on violence against women and victimization through intimate partners, it has become prevalent that there are now two crucial stances that are taken. The first position is that of the women being victimized as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, changing nature of intimate relationships, increasing gender equality, legislative changes, policy and procedural changes, etc. (Bunge, 2002). Between 1974 and 2000, the homicide rate for women decreased by 62% and the homicide rate for men dropped by more than half 55% (Bunge, 2002) which demonstrates the drastic decline in intimate partner violence including homicides. Secondly, one of the general concepts behind the literature examined would be the idea that intimate partner violence is now going through a process of normalization. For instance, popular women s magazines frame domestic violence in a way that normalizes the victims s responsibility while ignoring the role of the abuser and society (Berns, 2001). Individuals construct their own conceptions of what is normal and acceptable. These conceptions, what Cicourel (1968) calls background expectancies govern all social interaction (Berns, 2001). With the norms that society creates being the main control of interaction amongst society, it is clear that by allowing the perspective of intimate partner violence as normal will create unawareness about the issue and may perpetuate further issues. Women who have respect and power outside the home through community activities, including participation in microcredit schemes, are less likely to be abused than those who do not (Jewkes, 2002). ... In terms of positivity impacting Jerry, his father plays an important role in helping him decide what he does not want to be. In the novel Jerrys mother had died recently to a sickness. This resulted in his father acting like a sleepwalker going through the motions and like a puppet being maneuvered by invisible strings (The Chocolate War: 48). • 31. Essay about Nathaniel Hawthorne s Use of Symbolism Nathaniel Hawthorne is a prominent writer who uses many different elements in his works. He uses elements such as symbolism, figurative language, metaphor, irony and etc. to make his work prominent. In the works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he uses symbols for secret sin in The Scarlet Letter, The Minister s Black Veil, and Dr. Heidegger s Experiment. As seen in The Scarlet letter, the symbol for secret sin is the Scarlet letter A. The A represents the sin in which Hester commits adultery with the town s minister, Dimmesdale. One example of secret sin is when Hester first walks out of prison; for the first time she wore the letter A on her breast to show her crime. The A very well represents her secret sin. Even Dimmesdale curves ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many symbols in The Scarlet Letter. Moreover, the symbol of secret sin also appears in The Minister s Black Veil. When the people of the town first saw Mr. Hooper wearing the black veil, they were all wondering why he would wear such thing. To Mr. Hooper, the black veil means deceit and sins to those who can not separate themselves from their sins. One example is when he is wearing the black veil to the wedding, and everyone is kind of skeptic about why he is wearing it but in reality, he wore it to remind everyone of their sins. Because of this, people call him evil, and he soon became an outcast. The black veil can also represent his own sin that he committed in the past in which he can never forgive himself. Symbols for secret sin are once again used in Nathanial Hawthorne s works. Additionally, symbols for serest sin are also use in Dr. Heidegger s Experiment. In this story, Dr. Heidegger s sin is playing with God because he basically made up a story about the whole Fountain of Youth to his friends. But for him, this is all an experiment because he wants to see how his friends will react to their pretend younger selves, and if they have changed their personality. One example is when they drank the Water of Youth; Dr. Heidegger s friends became addicted to the water asking for more. Dr. Heidegger is playing God to his friends just for his experiment. • 32. The Function Of The Thyroid Gland Hypothyroidism occurs when there is deficient thyroid hormone secretion by the thyroid gland. It is also referred to as an underactive thyroid. This paper will discuss the function of the thyroid gland, as well as the causes, classification, risk factors, clinical features, laboratory values, diagnostic imaging, and treatment of hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland is located anteriorly in the lower neck, just inferior to the laryngeal prominence, which is also referred to as the Adam s apple. It extends from the fifth cervical vertebra to the first thoracic vertebra. The gland varies in shape, ranging from an H shape to a U shape. It is formed by two extended lateral lobes connected by a median isthmus. The thyroid is an endocrine gland which functions to regulate metabolism in the body. Three hormones are produced: triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and calcitonin. T3 and T4 increase the basal metabolic rate in the body. These hormones also affect brain development, body temperature, breathing, cholesterol levels, heart and nervous system functions, menstrual cycles, muscle strength, skin dryness, and weight (National Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Information Service, 2013). Calcitonin maintains calcium levels in the blood. Thyroid hormones are produced by iodine metabolism. The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced by the pituitary gland and releases thyroid hormones into the bloodstream when necessary. TSH is regulated by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The creation of the Human Resource Department has helped create a safety net for all employees to fall under and create a stable environment for employees to feel safe and secure. The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has a mission to protect the welfare of wage earners, job seekers, and retirees. They also improve working conditions and ensure work related benefits and rights. The DOL has many laws and reregulation s protecting workers that range from the Fair Labor Standards Act, which sets standards for wages and overtime pay, to the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which focuses on workplace safety and health. With the wide range that the DOL has employees can feel that they have standards in place to ensure fair pay, fair treatment, and a safe environment to work in. Without the enforcement of the DOL corporations are left to establish pay and safety standards internally. In a business atmosphere where the importance of profit is often placed before the employees, an environment without laws and regulations can be dangerous. An example can be seen in other countries where labor laws are not in place compassion and common sense also seem to be absent. In these areas workers, many times children often works long hours for little pay. Sadly it has been shown that when corporations are unregulated the importance for the fair treatment of employees takes a less important role. The faith in corporate America has been somewhat fragile with the knowledge of many corporate wrongdoings like the Enron scandal, recent financial buyout, and the ethical issues with bonuses for executives. • 34. Analysis Of George Ritzer s The Fast Food Industry George Ritzer, a notable American sociologist who is most known for his concept of McDonaldization. His ideas are based upon Weber s idea of rationalization, the historical process by which nature, society, and individual action are increasingly mastered by an orientation to planning, technical procedure and rational action; through the eyes of the fast food industry. McDonaldization is the process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest if the world. Ritzer s idea of McDonaldization is developed through his five concepts of: efficiency, calculability, predictability, control by technology, and the irrationality of rationality. What society is faced with are these specific questions: Is McDonaldization good for society? and How will it affect our future? These questions will be unanswered for many years to come as humans digest the likability of social control. When someone thinks of McDonald s, what do they usually think about? The Big Mac, French fries, Chicken McNuggets. However, what does not come to mind is the influence of McDonald s on various aspects of life and society; health, media, and even education. An example of Ritzer s idea of McDonaldization is the idea of McEducation; relates to colleges and students. Through Ritzer s central concepts, education will be evaluated as either rational or irrational. McEducation touches the first idea of efficiency, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cells in the hole have no bed, no blankets, no AC which made it cold. Prisoners were not allowed to wear clothes except for boxer shorts. A day in the life of a prisoner at Alcatraz is pretty tough. At 6:30 AM the prisoners woke up and tidied up their cells. At 6:45 they went to the mess hall to eat breakfast. Dieter s job involved a repetitive task: using a straight pole with a hook on the end to pull out the polystyrene bin liner from each empty kiwifruit bin as it passed by on the conveyor line. After this task, the bins moved along on the conveyor at a slow and steady pace until they reached a stacking machine. This machine was an automatic forklift that stacked five empty bins on top of one another ready for moving along to be loaded on to trucks for transport back to the orchard. Here they were filled again, and the process repeated. On the night of the incident, Dieter had started his shift on time at 11.00pm. A person s personality is his or her essence. It is what guides decisions, emotions, and even thoughts. Some may wonder if it is possible to explore every nuance of such a complex part of a being, but there are ways to determine what type of personality a person has, and then branch off into a more detailed examination of that person specifically. Combined with other factors, such as personality disorders and the environment that someone has grown up in, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, test and analysis can determine an accurate portrayal of a personality. Created in 1943 by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, it is a system made up of four basic functions and sub functions that combine to make a personality type. The mother and daughter team constructed it off of Jung s theories (History 2). Based on this system, one of the most common personality types in the US population is called an ESTJ, and one of the least common personality types is called an INFJ. There are many differences and similarities between these two types. An ESTJ personality, overall, is practical, fact based, and outgoing, whereas an INFJ personality is more private and makes decisions based on feelings; however, both are organized people who make good leaders and are capable of great success in roles that involve helping others.
