Napoleonā€™s Rule
How a young, ambitious general
expanded Franceā€™s boarders
What Do You Know About Napoleon?
ā€¢ Who was he? What did he do?
ā€¢ What are some of his accomplishments?
ā€¢ Was he a good person or bad person (Opinion)?
ā€¢ What ended up happening to him?
ā€¢ What do you want to know about Napoleon?
Directory
ā€¢ First met in 1795
ā€¢ Held executive power in France
ā€¢ Comprised of an executive branch and 5 directors
ā€¢ Weak, corrupt and inefficient
ā€¢ Ended in 1799 when Napoleon seized power
Early Napoleon
ā€¢ Young leaderā€”age of 26 he was in charge of
protecting Franceā€™s ā€œinteriorā€
ā€¢ One year later the Directory put him in charge of
invading Italyā€”very successful
ā€¢ Expanded Frances boarders/influence
ā€¢ Moved on to invade Egyptā€”hoping to disrupt
trade between GB and India
ā€¢ Lost Battle of the Nile, most of his ships destroyed
ā€¢ Returned to France in secret to avoid
embarrassmentā€”kept defeat out of papers to
make himself look better
Napoleonā€™s Return to France
ā€¢ Directory had grown weak and ineffective
ā€¢ Napoleon capitalized on his success as a national
hero decided to seize power from Directory
ā€¢ In a coup d'Ć©tat Napoleon forced the Directory to
give him power forced transfer of power
ā€¢ Group of 3 consuls would replace the Directory
ā€¢ Napoleon was voted to be in charge of first consul
ā€¢ Napoleon ruled as a dictator and proclaimed
himself to be emperor in 1804
Emperor Napoleon
How Napoleon set about to conquer
Europe
Napoleon Crownā€™s Himself
ā€¢ Wanted to make his own power permanent and
hereditary=King
ā€¢ Submitted a question before the people:
ā€“ ā€œDid the people want France to be an Empire?ā€
ā€¢ If so, then Napoleon thought he should be
emperor
ā€¢ Pope came from Rome to crown Napoleon but
when the Pope went to crown him, Napoleon
took the crown and put it on himselfā€”no one
gives the power to Napoleon, he takes it
Desire for Empire
ā€¢ Napoleon wanted to extend Francesā€™ power
ā€¢ Wanted to move to the Americas
ā€¢ He sent an army to Saint Domingue (Haiti) to
stop a civil war there
ā€¢ Failed miserably
ā€¢ led him to abandon his quest to rule America
ā€“ Louisiana Purchase came about as a result of this
failed attempt to expand the empire
Napoleonic Wars Begin
ā€¢ Extension of those wars fought between France and
other European nations during the French Rev.
ā€¢ During this time France became dominant power in
Europe
ā€¢ Continued until 1815 with Great Britain being the
biggest enemy
ā€¢ Big thing that kept Napoleon from invading Great
Britain was water---Great Britain had better navy
ā€¢ Napoleon was more successful on land
Continental System
ā€¢ Britain was still Franceā€™s nemesis
ā€¢ Napoleon thought if he disrupted trade for GB
then he would have an advantage over them
ā€¢ Planned to set up a blockade of the ports in
Europe that GB traded withā€”Continental System
ā€¢ Prohibited French or allied ships to trade with GB
ā€¢ Mildly successful
Peninsular War
ā€¢ Portugal refused to comply with Continental
System
ā€“ 1. Friends with Spain (shared Iberian Peninsula)
ā€“ 2. Depended on trade with Great Britain
ā€¢ Napoleon sent troops to Portugal to run their
king out of town
ā€¢ Portugal and Spain were quickly defeated and
Napoleon put his brother Joseph in power
ā€¢ Spanish people revolted against his ruleā€”Joseph
was a bad leader
ā€¢ Great Britain sent its military to help Spain
fight against French rule
ā€¢ Napoleon responded by sending massive
amounts of troops to Spain to fight the
rebellionā€”France quickly won the battle
ā€¢ Bigger problem remainedā€”Spanish people
ā€¢ Spanish people used guerilla warfare to fight
ā€¢ Many innocent Spanish people killedā€”
Napoleon was force to pull his troops out of
Spain shortly afterwards
Napoleon Dominates Europe
ā€¢ Despite his setback in Spain, Napoleon
continue to dominate Europe
ā€¢ Only 4 countries remained free:
ā€“ 1. Great Britain
ā€“ 2. Sweden
ā€“ 3. Portugal
ā€“ 4. Ottoman Empire
ā€¢ He also put his relatives in power in other
conquered European countries
Politics of Napoleon
The government of Napoleon and
France
Church-State relations
ā€¢ Many in France did not like the anti-religious
nature of the French Revolution
ā€¢ Napoleon made and agreement with the Pope
ā€¢ Called the Concordatā€”agreement
acknowledged that most people in France
were Catholic
ā€¢ Agreement did not say that France had to be
Catholic, but stressed religious toleration
Economic Reforms
ā€¢ Established the Bank of France to regulate the
economy
ā€¢ Also set up better tax collection system (fairer)
ā€¢ Tried to assure that the government would
not face the financial problems they had
before the revolution
Legal and Educational Reforms
ā€¢ Napoleonic Codeā€”made laws uniform across
the country, eliminated many injustices
ā€¢ Negativeā€”stressed uniformity over individual
rights
ā€“ 1. Newspapers were censured
ā€“ 2. denied rights to womenā€¦husbands had
authority over their wives
ā€¢ Napoleon thought that a strong state had to
have strong leaders in government
ā€¢ Set up higher education and technical schools
for young men
Napoleonā€™s Legacy
ā€¢ Left legacy both in France and in Europe as a
whole
ā€¢ France:
ā€“ Basic policies of revolution would remain in the Govt.
ā€“ Historians call this the ā€œAge of Napoleonā€
ā€“ Ushered in a period where all people are equal under
the law
ā€¢ Europe:
ā€“ Fueled the idea of ā€œnationalismā€ā€”sense of unity or
identity of a people
ā€¢ Both in France and in other areas Napoleon conquered

  • 5. Napoleonā€™s Return to France ā€¢ Directory had grown weak and ineffective ā€¢ Napoleon capitalized on his success as a national hero decided to seize power from Directory ā€¢ In a coup d'Ć©tat Napoleon forced the Directory to give him power forced transfer of power ā€¢ Group of 3 consuls would replace the Directory ā€¢ Napoleon was voted to be in charge of first consul ā€¢ Napoleon ruled as a dictator and proclaimed himself to be emperor in 1804

Napoleon Crownā€™s Himself ā€¢ Wanted to make his own power permanent and hereditary=King ā€¢ Submitted a question before the people: ā€“ ā€œDid the people want France to be an Empire?ā€ ā€¢ If so, then Napoleon thought he should be emperor ā€¢ Pope came from Rome to crown Napoleon but when the Pope went to crown him, Napoleon took the crown and put it on himselfā€”no one gives the power to Napoleon, he takes it
  • 8. Desire for Empire ā€¢ Napoleon wanted to extend Francesā€™ power ā€¢ Wanted to move to the Americas ā€¢ He sent an army to Saint Domingue (Haiti) to stop a civil war there ā€¢ Failed miserably ā€¢ led him to abandon his quest to rule America ā€“ Louisiana Purchase came about as a result of this failed attempt to expand the empire
  • 9. Napoleonic Wars Begin ā€¢ Extension of those wars fought between France and other European nations during the French Rev. ā€¢ During this time France became dominant power in Europe ā€¢ Continued until 1815 with Great Britain being the biggest enemy ā€¢ Big thing that kept Napoleon from invading Great Britain was water---Great Britain had better navy ā€¢ Napoleon was more successful on land
  • 10. Continental System ā€¢ Britain was still Franceā€™s nemesis ā€¢ Napoleon thought if he disrupted trade for GB then he would have an advantage over them ā€¢ Planned to set up a blockade of the ports in Europe that GB traded withā€”Continental System ā€¢ Prohibited French or allied ships to trade with GB ā€¢ Mildly successful
  • 11. Peninsular War ā€¢ Portugal refused to comply with Continental System ā€“ 1. Friends with Spain (shared Iberian Peninsula) ā€“ 2. Depended on trade with Great Britain ā€¢ Napoleon sent troops to Portugal to run their king out of town ā€¢ Portugal and Spain were quickly defeated and Napoleon put his brother Joseph in power ā€¢ Spanish people revolted against his ruleā€”Joseph was a bad leader
  • 12. ā€¢ Great Britain sent its military to help Spain fight against French rule ā€¢ Napoleon responded by sending massive amounts of troops to Spain to fight the rebellionā€”France quickly won the battle ā€¢ Bigger problem remainedā€”Spanish people ā€¢ Spanish people used guerilla warfare to fight ā€¢ Many innocent Spanish people killedā€” Napoleon was force to pull his troops out of Spain shortly afterwards

Church-State relations ā€¢ Many in France did not like the anti-religious nature of the French Revolution ā€¢ Napoleon made and agreement with the Pope ā€¢ Called the Concordatā€”agreement acknowledged that most people in France were Catholic ā€¢ Agreement did not say that France had to be Catholic, but stressed religious toleration
  • 16. Economic Reforms ā€¢ Established the Bank of France to regulate the economy ā€¢ Also set up better tax collection system (fairer) ā€¢ Tried to assure that the government would not face the financial problems they had before the revolution
  • 17. Legal and Educational Reforms ā€¢ Napoleonic Codeā€”made laws uniform across the country, eliminated many injustices ā€¢ Negativeā€”stressed uniformity over individual rights ā€“ 1. Newspapers were censured ā€“ 2. denied rights to womenā€¦husbands had authority over their wives ā€¢ Napoleon thought that a strong state had to have strong leaders in government ā€¢ Set up higher education and technical schools for young men
  • 18. Napoleonā€™s Legacy ā€¢ Left legacy both in France and in Europe as a whole ā€¢ France: ā€“ Basic policies of revolution would remain in the Govt. ā€“ Historians call this the ā€œAge of Napoleonā€ ā€“ Ushered in a period where all people are equal under the law ā€¢ Europe: ā€“ Fueled the idea of ā€œnationalismā€ā€”sense of unity or identity of a people ā€¢ Both in France and in other areas Napoleon conquered
