 Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and
technology conducted at the nanoscale (about 1 to 100
nanometers)
 Nano can refer to technologies, materials, particles, objects –
we are focusing on nanomaterials as these are already
being used in workplaces more widely
 A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick, a human
hair is around 80,000- 100,000 nanometers wide.
 The study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and
molecular scale ie. 1 Nanometer and involves developing or
modifying materials or devices within that size.
Units in nanometers (µm)
• Nanomaterials can :
 occur naturally
 be produced by human activity either as a product of another activity
 on purpose (engineered)
• At nano-scale,
 the material properties change - melting point, fluorescence,
electrical conductivity, and chemical reactivity.
 Surface size is larger so a greater amount of the material
comes into contact with surrounding materials and increases
reactivity.
• Nanomaterial properties can be ‘tuned’ by varying the size of
the particle (e.g. changing the fluorescence colour so a particle
can be identified).
• Their complexity offers a variety of functions to products .

claims that: “Nanotechnology is an
enabling technology that will change
the nature of almost every human-made
object in the next century.”
 Nanotechnology helps to understand the world
around us, and will provide inspiration and
drive for many generations of scientists.
 Thus the future generation is going to continue
the fantastic voyage with Nano technology in
advanced level making life easier.

  • 3.  Nanotechnology is science, engineering, and technology conducted at the nanoscale (about 1 to 100 nanometers)  Nano can refer to technologies, materials, particles, objects – we are focusing on nanomaterials as these are already being used in workplaces more widely  A sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick, a human hair is around 80,000- 100,000 nanometers wide.  The study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and molecular scale ie. 1 Nanometer and involves developing or modifying materials or devices within that size.
  • 5. • Nanomaterials can :  occur naturally  be produced by human activity either as a product of another activity  on purpose (engineered)
  • 6. • At nano-scale,  the material properties change - melting point, fluorescence, electrical conductivity, and chemical reactivity.  Surface size is larger so a greater amount of the material comes into contact with surrounding materials and increases reactivity. • Nanomaterial properties can be ‘tuned’ by varying the size of the particle (e.g. changing the fluorescence colour so a particle can be identified). • Their complexity offers a variety of functions to products .

  • 10.  Loss of jobs (in manufacturing, farming, etc).  Carbon Nanotubes could cause infection of lungs.  It has very high initial investment costs along with high manufacturing costs.  Atomic weapons could be more accessible and destructive.
  • 11.  National Science and Technology Council (USA) claims that: “Nanotechnology is an enabling technology that will change the nature of almost every human-made object in the next century.”
  • 12.  Nanotechnology helps to understand the world around us, and will provide inspiration and drive for many generations of scientists.  Thus the future generation is going to continue the fantastic voyage with Nano technology in advanced level making life easier.
