4. Our Chosen Name
Essentially, we chose ‘Movie Talk’ as our magazine name because it sounds realistic and professional. It connotes to the
audience that the magazine will talk about movies and report on the latest films in the cinema. Also, we decided to go for a
general film magazine not a horror specific magazine. This is due to use believing that horror specific magazines are too low
budget compared to other magazines and usually do not look as good. Leading us to strive to create a magazine like ‘Empire’
rather than ‘Fangoria’.
We conducted a talk with multiple different members of our target audience and showed them the series of names in the
slide above. We asked them what seemed more professional and what one they would be most attracted to buy as a fan of
horror and films in general. All of them chose movie talk as they believed it was more professional than the others and
thought it would look better on the magazine and as part of the masthead. They portrayed that it followed conventions of
film magazines with a relatable and suitable name, leading us to choose this one to promote our media package.
5. Why we did not chose the
other magazine names
As a group, we decided against choosing any of the other existing names we came across due to our target audience and
originality. We felt that the magazine name ‘Total Horror’ could not be used as part of our media package as it too closely
resembled an existing film magazine called Total Film. As a group, we decided to stay away from this as we chose to be
original.
We did not choose the magazine name ‘Movie Mania’ due to the way it sounded when read out. It was initially one of our
choices but we felt it would have attracted more of a younger audience. This would not have been suitable as the content we
were creating would have included horror, this would be above their age bracket.
Finally, as a group, we came to an agreement we did not want to use the magazine name ‘All about Film’. This was really only
ruled out as we felt it was too long for a title of a magazine and it would not be able to look good as part of a conventional
masthead. We looked carefully at existing texts as examples and we saw that all of their mastheads were no longer than 2
words, leading us to choose one of this length to follow conventions.
