Our Genre Choice
We began today's lesson as a group and talked about
different possible genres that we could base our own
piece around. After careful consideration we narrowed
it down to our two favourite options as a group.
Our first thought was to base our short film on the
drama genre. We thought this would be a good idea
because, being a group of girls it’s likely that we would
be able to relate to most drama film story lines and feel
passionate about the piece that we create. I researched
into the drama genre and here are some popular films
that I found.

Then we talked about what kind of things are usually
demonstrated within films of the drama genre and
below is a mind map that I created which presents some
of the typical conventions that we talked about. I feel as
though this was am important discussion because it is
essential to understand what is stereotypically expected
of us during production if we decided to chose this
option.
Our next task was to come up with some potential ideas
for our storyline, we did this by sitting in a group and
having a discussion. We came up with many ideas such
as relationships and family problems, cultural issues
and grief. However, taking into consideration all of out
ideas as well as our actors, facilities and locations we
decided that it would be a great idea to create our short
film on Cyberbullying because we felt that it was a
unique idea.
Although we liked the idea of creating a drama film, we
had to review our other options too. The second genre
that we liked the idea of was Horror. We felt that this
genre would be more challenging but more rewarding.
We carried out the same process, so here are some
popular films that I found from the horror genre.
Again we talked about things which are usually
demonstrated in the horror genre, I have made another
mind map to present our discussion. This discussion
was important essential to understand what is
stereotypically expected of us during production if we
decided to chose this option.
Then we had to think of some potential storylines, as a
group we found this much easier than doing the same
thing for the drama genre discussion. We felt that our
ideas were become more developed and we were all
actively involved in the discussion. Initially, we were
set on creating a Halloween party but out idea soon
changed to a ‘school haunting’.
Our Decision
We liked the idea that the purpose of horror films are to
thrill and entertain and we found it much easier to come
up with and develop ideas for our story-line using this
genre. We came to our final decision by having a group
vote and this led us to finalising the choice of the
Horror genre. We are all happy with our choice and
looking forward to getting started.
