- 1. www.understandquran.com 1 Arabic Grammar is divided into two main parts. Simplified definitions of each one of them is given below: • Sarf رفَص: How to make different words from root letters of a verb. • Nahw وْحَن : How to make pairs and sentences, using different words. This joining of words results in changes in the endings of words depending upon whether those words act as subject, object, etc. in a sentence. However, some words do not change their endings. In this course, we will focus on four types of pairs and four types of sentences. We have already learnt جملة اسمية (Nominal sentence) in the last course. Let us learn فعلية جملة (Verbal sentence) now. Please note that: • اسمية جملة is the one which starts with a noun. • فعلية جملة is the one which starts with a verb. - 2. www.understandquran.com 2 Let us take an example of فعلية .جملة َضْر َ ْاْل ُللا َقَلَخ the earth Allah created Object: ْوُعْفَمِهب ل Subject: لِعاَف :لْعِفverb state of نصب state of رفع Few more examples: The Muslim memorized the Quran. َٰانْرُقْال ُمِلْسُمْال َظِفَح The believer recites the Hadith. َثْيِدَحْال ُنِمْؤُمْال ُ أَرْقَي The pious (person) listens to the Seerah. َةَرْيِالس ُحِلاَّالص ُعَمْسَي Now, let us change the subject to plural: َٰانْرُقْال َنْوُمِلْسُمْال َظِفَح َٰانْرُقْال ُمِلْسُمْال َظِفَح َثْيِدَحْال َنْوُنِمْؤُمْال ُ أَرْقَي َثْيِدَحْال ُنِمْؤُمْال ُ أَرْقَي َةَرْيِالس َنْوُحِلاَّالص ُعَمْسَي َةَرْيِالس ُحِلاَّالص ُعَمْسَي ➢ If a verb and a subject are there in a single sentence, then the verb will be singular. ➢ Don’t worry about changing the first verb to plural. Keep it singular always! Isn’t it easy to make a sentence in Arabic! Learn to change the subject to feminine (and the verb too). َٰانْرُقْال ُةَمِلْسُمْال ِتَظِفَح َٰانْرُقْال ُمِلْسُمْال َظِفَح َثْيِدَحْال ُةَنِمْؤُمْال ُ أَرْقَت َثْيِدَحْال ُنِمْؤُمْال ُ أَرْقَي َةَرْيِالس ُةَحِلاَّالص ُعَمْسَت َةَرْيِالس ُحِلاَّالص ُعَمْسَي

The best example of this rule from the Qur’an is: رْوُفَغ َللا ِان نِا خبر اسمنِا is forgiving Allah Indeed More Examples ➢ Let us add نِا to these sentences: اًدمَحُم ِنإلْوُسَر لْوُسَر دمَحُم اًدْوُه ِنإِيبَن ِيبَن دْوُه داْيَز ِنإڑْيِغَص ڑْيِغَص ٌدْيَز ادْعَس ِنإرْيِبَك رْيِبَك ٌدْعَس ➢ Learn to add نِا to these sentences: َمِلْسُمْال ِنإقِداَص ُمِلْسُمْلَاقِداَص َنِمْؤُمْال ِنإحِلاَص ُنِمْؤُمْلَاحِلاَص َقِفاَنُمْال ِنإقِساَف ُقِفاَنُمْلَاقِساَف ➢ After adding نِا to these sentences: (Note that the plural of َمِلْسُمًة or ِلْسُمةَم is َمِلْسُمات ) ةَقِداَص َةَمِلْسُمْال ِنإ ةَقِداَص ُةَمِلْسُمْلَا ةَحِلاَص َةَنِمْؤُمْال ِنإ ةَحِلاَص ُةَنِمْؤُمْلَا ةَقِساَف َةَقِفاَنُمْال ِنإ ةَقِساَف ُةَقِفاَنُمْلَا Practice the word “َنْوُمِلْسُم” with TPI. Please note that the plural of اًمِلْسُم and مِلْسُم is َنْيِمِلْسُم. َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَا ُمِلْسُمْلَا Original state (state of )رفع َنْيِمِلْسُمْلَا َمِلْسُمْلَا When there is effect (state of )نصب ➢ After adding نِا to these sentences: َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ِنإُقِداَصَنْو َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَاُقِداَصَنْو َنْيِنِمْؤُمْال ِنإُحِلاَصَنْو َنْوُنِمْؤُمْلَاُحِلاَصَنْو َنْيِقِفاَنُمْال ِنإُقِساَفَنْو َنْوُقِفاَنُمْلَاُقِساَفَنْو ➢ Some more words behave like ِنإ. They are called: Sisters of ِنإ. نِكٰل ن َ أَك ن َ أ but as if, as though that ➢ Add these words before “ ُتْيَبْلَاِيربَك ” and practice with TPI: ِيربَك َتْيَبْال ن َ أ ن َ أ ِيربَك َتْيَبْال ن َ أَك ن َ أَك ِيربَك َتْيَبْال نِكٰل نِكٰل نِإ and its sisters نِكٰل ،ن َ أَك ،ن َ أ16b

Best example of this rule from the Qur’an is: اًرْوُفَغ ُللا َن ََك خبرَن ََك اسمَن ََك forgiving Allah is Let us practice َن ََك with these sentences. Case-2: When the first one has ْلا Case-1: Both having Tanween ُمِلْسُمْال َن ََكًقِداَصا ُمِلْسُمْلَاقِداَص اًّيِبَن دْوُه َن ََك ِيبَن دْوُه ُنِمْؤُمْال َن ََكًحِلاَصا ُنِمْؤُمْلَاحِلاَص ًاڑْيِغَص ٌدْيَز َن ََك ڑْيِغَص ٌدْيَز ُقِفاَنُمْال َن ََكِساَفاًق ُقِفاَنُمْلَاقِساَف اًرْيِبَك ٌدْعَس َن ََك رْيِبَك ٌدْعَس Case-4: Plural nouns Case-3: Feminine nouns َنْوُمِلْسُمْال َن ََكِقِداَصَنْي َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَاُقِداَصَنْو ًةَقِداَص ُةَمِلْسُمْال َن ََك ةَقِداَص ُةَمِلْسُمْلَا َن ََكَنْوُنِمْؤُمْالِحِلاَصَنْي َنْوُنِمْؤُمْلَاُحِلاَصَنْو ًةَحِلاَص ُةَنِمْؤُمْال َن ََك ةَحِلاَص ُةَنِمْؤُمْلَا َنْوُقِفاَنُمْال َن ََكِقِساَفَنْي َنْوُقِفاَنُمْلَاُقِساَفَنْو ًةَقِساَف ُةَقِفاَنُمْال َن ََك ةَقِساَف ُةَقِفاَنُمْلَا Practice the word “َنْوُمِلْسُم” with TPI. Please note that the plural of اًمِلْسُم and مِلْسُم is َنْيِمِلْسُم. َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَا ُمِلْسُمْلَا Original state (state of )رفع َنْيِمِلْسُمْلَا َمِلْسُمْلَا When there is effect (state of )نصب ➢ Some more words behave like َن َ.َك They are called: Sisters of َن َ.َك Two of them are given below: woke up, has become َحَبْص َ أ reached evening, has become ىٰسْم َ أ ➢ Add these words before “ ُتْيَبْلَاِيربَك ” and practice with TPI: ُتْيَبْال َن ََكاًرِيبَك َن ََك اًرِيبَك ُتْيَبْال َحَبْص َ أ َحَبْص َ أ اًرِيبَك ُتْيَبْال ىَسْم َ أ ىٰسْم َ أ َن ََكand its sisters َ أٰسْم َ أ ،َحَبْصى16c
- 5. www.understandquran.com 5 Prepositions In the past lessons, we have learnt four important types of sentences. ورُفَغ ُهللَا ةَّيِمْسِا ُهللا َقَلَخَضْر َ اْل ةَّيِلْعِف ورُفَغ َللا نِإ نِإwith اًروُفَغ ُهللا َن ََك َن ََكwith From this lesson onwards, we will learn four important types of pairs. These pairs are given below along with a simple example. The four examples make a nice statement (if you read that downwards) that helps us remember the four types of pairs easily: Example Describes… →جر حرفwith ِضْر َ ْاْل ىِف →ةَفِصwith رْيِبَك ٌتْيَب how? →إشارةwith ُتْيَبْال َكِلٰذ which one? Showing relation → ِهللا ُتْيَب whose In this lesson, we will take the first pair (Preposition + Noun) ،ٰٰلَع ،يِف ، ِب ،ْنَع ،ْنِم ،ِلٰلِإ… ➢ The noun after it will be in Jarr state (ين ــــــ ـــِـ)ـــ Here are few examples for Jarr state: ِبــــِللـا ِضْر َ ْاْل يِف ــــِلَنْيِمِلْسُمْل َنِمَنْيِنِمْؤُمْال ➢ Few more examples for Jarr state: Practice with TPI! If you have ِل + a specified noun (with ـْال… ) If you have ِل + a general noun (ـ ًـ )ـ مِلْسُم Original state (state of )رفع ِمِلْسُمْلِل + ـِل ُمِلْسُمْال مِلْسُمِل + ـِل مِلْسُم ًمِلْسُما When there is effect (state of )نصب ِنِمْؤُمْلِل + ـِل ُنِمْؤُمْال نِمْؤُمِل + ـِل نِمْؤُم مِلْسُم After preposition (state of Jarr) ِحِلاَّلصِل + ـِل ُحِلاَّالص حِلاَصِل + ـِل حِلاَص ِرِصالنِل + ـِل ُرِصاالن رِصاَنِل + ـِل رِصاَن ➢ If you have ُللا after a preposition: ِللا ىَِلإ ← ىَِلإ ِهللا َنِم ← ْنِم ِللِاب ← ـِب ىَلَعِللا ← ىَلَع ِللا يِف ← ْيِف ِ ِلل ← ـِل 16d in Jarr state First pair (Preposition + Noun)

The noun after it will be in Jarr state (ين ــــــ ـــِـ.)ـــ Few examples: If you have ْنِم + a specified noun (with ـْال… ) If you have ِل + a specific noun (with ـْال… ) َنِمَنْيمِلْسُمْال +ْنِم َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَا َنْيمِلْسُمْلِل + ـِل َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَا َنْينِمْؤُمْال َنِم +ْنِم َنْوُنِمْؤُمْلَا َنْينِمْؤُمْلِل + ـِل َنْوُنِمْؤُمْلَا َنْيِحِلاَّالص َنِم +ْنِم َنْوُحِلاَّلصَا َنْيِحِلاَّلصِل + ـِل َنْوُحِلاَّلصَا َنِمَنْيِرِصاالن +ْنِم َنْوُرِصالنَا َنْيِرِصالنِل + ـِل َنْوُرِصالنَا Practice with TPI! َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَا مِلْسُم Original state (state of )رفع َاَنْيمِلْسُمْل ًمِلْسُما When there is effect (state of )نصب َاَنْيمِلْسُمْل مِلْسُم After preposition (state of Jarr) Examples from the Qur’an: guidance for those conscious of Allah ىدُهْيِقَّتُمْلِلَن but they are not (at all) believers مُه اَمَوْيِنِمْؤُمِبَن and became of the disbelievers َنََكَوٰكْال َنِمْيِرِفَن and Allah is the possessor of bounty for the believers لْضَف وُذ ُهللاَوْيِنِمْؤُمْال ىَلَعَن Allah is free from need of the worlds ىِنَغ َللا نِاَفَنْيِمَلٰعْال ِنَع And those who believe and do righteous deeds – We will surely admit them among the righteous [into Paradise] َنيِذَّالَوٰاْوُنَمالص واُلِمَعَو اٰحِلِت ْمُهنَلِخْدُنَلِفىْيِحِلاَّالصَن First pair (Preposition + Plural Nouns) 17a
- 7. www.understandquran.com 7 In this lesson we will practice sentences that have رفع،نصب،جر for singular nouns. ➢ See the translation in the following sentences. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. A Muslim came. مِلْسُم َءاَج Zaid saw a Muslim. اًمِلْسُم دْيَز ى ٰ أَر Zaid heard from a Muslim. مِلْسُم ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَس ➢ Practice with these sentences too, Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. The Muslim came. ُمِلْسُمْال َءاَج Zaid saw the Muslim. َمِلْسُمْال دْيَز ى ٰ أَر Zaid heard from the Muslim. َنِم دْيَز َعِمَسِمِلْسُمْال ➢ Let us take few examples from the Qur’an. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. ُلْوُقَيُرِف ََكْال ُاسالن َنَمٰا ُهللا َعِمَس The disbeliever will say The people believed Allah heard ➢ Few another examples from the Qur’an. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. َضْر َ ْاْل ُهللا َقَلَخ the earth Allah created َدِعاَوَقْال هٰرْبِا ُعَفْرَيُم the bases Ibrahim (AS) raises َلْوُسَّرال ُنْوَعْرِف ىٰصَع the messenger Fir’oun disobeyed ٰتِكْالَب َاَلَزن the book He sent down َللا اْوُعْيِطَا Allah Obey َراالن اْوُقَّاتَو the fire And fear رَج، بْصَن ،عْفَر for singular nouns17b
- 8. www.understandquran.com 8 In this lesson we will take sentences that have رفع،نصب،جر for plural nouns. ➢ Translate the following. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. Muslims came. َنْوُمِلْسُم َءاَج Zaid saw Muslims. دْيَز ى ٰ أَرَنْيِمِلْسُم Zaid heard from Muslims. َنْيِمِلْسُم ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَس ➢ Translate the following. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. The Muslims came. َنْوُمِلْسُمْال َءاَج Zaid saw the Muslims. َنْيِمِلْسُمْال دْيَز ى ٰ أَر Zaid heard from the Muslims. َنِم دْيَز َعِمَسَنْيِمِلْسُمْال ➢ Examples from the Qur’an. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. َنْوُنِمْؤُمْال ُحَرْفَي َنْوُرِف ََكْال ُلْوُقَي َالَقالَونُمِلاَّظ The believers rejoice The disbelievers say The wrongdoers said ➢ Few another examples from the Qur’an. Show the TPI sign for the nouns only. الظْيِمِلَن ُللا ُّلِضُي the wrongdoers Allah sends astray الشْيِرِكَن ِزْجَيَسىُللا the grateful ones Allah will soon reward َنْيِلَسْرُمْال ُدْوُمَث ْتَبَّذَك the messengers Thamud denied ٰكْالَنْيِرِف ُّبِحُي ََل the disbelievers He does not like الظْيِمِلَن ُّبِحُي ََل wrongdoers He does not like الصَنْيِرِب ِرِشَب those who are patient Give good news ،عْفَررَج، بْصَن for plural nouns17c
- 9. www.understandquran.com 9 In this lesson, we will learn the second pair, made of a singular noun and its attribute (ةَفِص + مْسِا). In Arabic, the noun is written first, and then its attribute. رْيِبَك تْيَب ةَفِص مْسِا Therefore, in Arabic, we say, “house big” instead of “big house.” If I say, “I saw a big black scary hairy …(insect or a bear?)” So, instead of keeping you in suspense till the end, in Arabic, I have to say “insect” first and then describe its attributes. ➢ Practice with TPI. Show the TPI sign two times for the two words. اَذٰهرْيِبَك ٌتْيَب رْيِبَك ٌتْيَب Original state (رفع state) ى ٰ أَراًرْيِبَك اتْيَب دْيَز اًرْيِبَك اتْيَب When there is effect (نصب state) رْيِبَك ٍتْيَب ْيِف ٌدْيَز رْيِبَك ٍتْيَب After preposition (جر state) ➢ Practice with TPI! قِداَص ٌمِلْسُم (A true Muslim). قِداَص ٌمِلْسُم َءاَج قِداَص ٌمِلْسُم Original state (رفع state) اًقِداَص امِلْسُم دْيَز ى ٰ أَر اًقِداَص امِلْسُم When there is effect (نصب state) ٍمِلْسُم ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَسقِداَص ٍمِلْسُمقِداَص After preposition (جر state) ➢ Example with “ْل:”ا If the اسم has ْلا , صفة will also have ْل.ا ُقِداَّالص ُمِلْسُمْلَ:ا the honest Muslim. َءاَجُقِداَّالص ُمِلْسُمْال ُقِداَّالص ُمِلْسُمْلَا Original state (رفع state) َمِلْسُمْال دْيَز ى ٰ أَرَقِداَّالص َمِلْسُمْلَاَقِداَّالص When there is effect (نصب state) ِمِلْسُمْال َنِم دْيَز َعِمَسِقِداَّالص ِمِلْسُمْلَاِقِداَّالص After preposition (جر state) ➢ Examples from the Quran َنِم ِللِاب ُذْوُعَاِمْيِجَّرال ِنٰطْيَّالش اَنِدْهِاْيِقَتْسُمْال َاطَرِالصَم I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the outcast Guide us to the straight path ٰذَوَكِلْيِبُمْال ُزْوَفْالُن َوِاْمُكُٰلهِاو ٰلهدِحا And that is the clear attainment And your god is one God ْوُقَوْوُلْمُهَل اًَلْوَقْوُرْعماًف ِاهنْيِرَك ٌٰانْرُقَل،مْىِفٰتِكْوُنْكم بن and speak to them words of appropriate kindness Indeed, it is a noble Qur’an, In a Register well-protected Second pair ةَفِص + مْسِا (Singular)17d
- 10. www.understandquran.com 10 In this lesson, we will learn: Second pair ةَفِص + مْسِا )Plural). For example: َونُقِداَص َونُمِلْسُمTrue Muslims ➢ Practice with TPI. Show the TPI sign two times for the two words. َنْوُقِداَص َونُمِلْسُم َءاَج َنْوُقِداَص َنْوُمِلْسُم Original state (رفع state) َنْيِقِداَص َنْيمِلْسُم دْيَز ى ٰ أَر َنْيِقِداَص َنْيِمِلْسُم When there is effect (نصب state) َنْيِقِداَص َنْيمِلْسُم ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَس َنْيِقِداَص َنْيِمِلْسُم After preposition (جر state) ➢ Example with “ْل.”ا If the اسم has ْل,ا صفة will also have ْل.ا َنْوُمِلْسُمْلَاُقِداَّالصَنْو (the honest Muslims) َنْوُقِداَّالص َونُمِلْسُمْال َءاَج َنْوُقِداَّالص َونُمِلْسُمْلَا Original state (رفع state) َنْيِقِداَّالص َنْيمِلْسُمْال دْيَز ى ٰ أَر َنْيِقِداَّالص َنْيمِلْسُمْلَا When there is effect (نصب state) َنْيِقِداَّالص َنْيمِلْسُمْال َنِم دْيَز َعِمَس َنْيِقِداَّالص َنْيمِلْسُمْلَا After preposition (جر state) ➢ Examples from the Qur’an: َفِاِنَع ىٰضْرَي ََلَللا نٰفْال ِمْوَقْالْيِقِسَن Allah is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people ََلُهللاَوىِدْهَيالظ َمْوَقْالْيِمِلَن and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people واُالَقِاانُااَنْلِسْرِاٰلْيِمِرْجُّم مْوَقَن They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals" Second pair ةَفِص + مْسِا (Plural)18a
- 11. www.understandquran.com 11 We will now learn the 3rd pair. We know the words: ء ََلُؤٰه ،اَذٰه (This, These). If you point out to anything while saying اَذٰه then that thing will become specific. Therefore, ْلا (the) is added to that word. ُتْيَبْال اَذٰه this house This pair is a pair with اشارة word (pointer word). It answers the question: Which one? ➢ For the pointer words, there is no change in any state. So, Only one sign will be shown because only one word changes its sign. اَذٰهُتْيَبْال اَذٰه Original state (رفع state) اَذٰهَتْيَبْال اَذٰه When there is effect (نصب state) اَذٰهِتْيَبْال اَذٰه After preposition (جر state) ➢ Practice the above pairs in sentences using TPI! يِتْيَباَذٰهُتْيَبْال اَذٰه Original state (رفع state) دْيَز ى ٰ أَراَذٰهَتْيَبْال اَذٰه When there is effect (نصب state) يِف ٌدْيَزاَذٰهِتْيَبْال اَذٰه After preposition (جر state) ➢ Let us take practice with another word: “مِل ْسُم”. اَذٰه َءاَجُمِلْسُمْال اَذٰهُمِلْسُمْال Original state (رفع state) اَذٰه دْيَز ى ٰ أَرَمِلْسُمْال اَذٰهَمِلْسُمْال When there is effect (نصب state) اَذٰه ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَسِمِلْسُمْال اَذٰهِمِلْسُمْال After preposition (جر state) Third pair ةَراَإشةَفِص + (Plural) )ِء ََلُؤٰه ،اَذٰ(ه18b
- 12. www.understandquran.com 12 Practice of plural: ➢ As you learnt that there is no change in any state of the pointer words. In plural too, there will be no change in any state. While doing TPI, Only one sign will be shown because only one word changes its sign. ِء ََلُؤٰهَنْوُمِلْسُمْال ِء ََلُؤٰه Original state (رفع state) ِء ََلُؤٰهَنيِمِلْسُمْال ِء ََلُؤٰه When there is effect (نصب state) ِء ََلُؤٰهَنيِمِلْسُمْال ِء ََلُؤٰه After preposition (جر state) ➢ Practice these sentences using TPI! ِء ََلُؤٰه َءاَجَنْوُمِلْسُمْال ِء ََلُؤٰه دْيَز ى ٰ أَرَنيِمِلْسُمْال ِء ََلُؤٰه ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَسَنيِمِلْسُمْال ➢ Other words of Isharah are: َِئكٰٓول ُ أ َكِلٰذ those that ➢ Examples from the Qur’an: (Keep the verb & subject together during practice) َكْيَلِا ۤاَنْيَحْوَااَذٰهَٰانْرُقْال We have revealed to you this Qur'an نِااَذٰهِدْهَي َٰانْرُقْالْى Indeed, this Qur'an guides ىِف ِاسلنِل اَنْبَرَض ْدَقَلَواَذٰهلَثَم ِ ُك ْنِم ِنٰاْرُقْال And We have certainly presented for the people in this Qur'an from every [kind of] example.
- 13. www.understandquran.com 13 In this lesson we will learn the pair that shows relation between two words. ➢ You must have heard this pair: ِللا ُتْيَب of Allah the house ➢ Place Dhammah on the 1st word & Kasrah on the 2nd . It shows the relation between the two words. ِللا ُتْيَب The second word answers to the question: Whose? ➢ Most of the names occur on this pattern, for example: Slave of Allah ِهللا ُدْبَع Slave of the most Beneficent. ِنٰمْحَّرال ُدْبَع Helper of the Deen ِنْيِالد ُرْيِصَن ➢ Here are some more examples with proper nouns: the house of Zaid دْيَز ُتْيَب Nation of Hood (AS) دْوُه ُمْوَق Rabb of Muhammad ﷺ دمَحُم ُّبَرﷺ ➢ Let us take few more examples from the Qur’an: دمَحُمُلْوُسَّرِهللا Muhammad ﷺ (is) the Messenger of Allah َءٓاَج اَذِاِهللا ُرْصَنُحْتَفْالَو When the victory of Allah and the conquest comes ْمُهَلْبَق ْتَبَّذَكوحُن ُمْوَق Before them the people of Noah denied Introduction - Third Pair (that shows relation) 18c
- 14. www.understandquran.com 14 In the last lesson, we learnt the pair that shows relation between the two words. In this lesson we will learn how to use the third pair in sentences. ➢ We already know the pair (ِهللا ُتْيَب). Let us now learn the three states for this pair. Please note that the second word is already in Jarr state so there is no change in this word, only the first word will change. Therefore, you have to show only one TPI sign for the first word. Look at the given sentences and practice with TPI: ِهللا ُتْيَب اَذٰه ِهللا ُتْيَب Original state (رفع state) ِهللا َتْيَب دْيَز ى ٰ أَر ِهللا َتْيَب When there is effect (نصب state) ِللا ِتْيَب ْيِف ٌدْيَز ِللا ِتْيَب After preposition (جر state) ➢ Let us take second example: ِضْر َ ْاْل ُّبَر (Rabb of the earth). Practice with the given sentences and show TPI only once because only one word will change. ِضْر َ ْاْل ُّبَرُهللَا ِضْر َ ْاْل ُّبَر Original state (رفع state) َّبَر ُدُبْع َ أِضْر َ ْاْل َّبَرِضْر َ ْاْل When there is effect (نصب state) ُذْوُع َ أِضْر َ ْاْل ِبَرـِب ِضْر َ ْاْل ِبَر After preposition (جر state) ➢ Now, let us take few examples from the Qur’an: ْيِذَّالنَي َنْوُضُقَنَدْهَعِهللا Who break the covenant of Allah ُمَلْعَا ْۤىِنِاِضْرَ ْاَلَو ِتٰوٰمَّالس َبْيَغ I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth نِمِاسَوْسَوْال ِرَش from the evil of the whisperer ْلُقَاْوُعِب ُذِاسالن ِبَر Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind َاَكُّبَر َلَعَف َفْيَك َرَت ْمَلِلْيِفْال ِبٰحْصَِاب Have you not considered, [O Muhammad], how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? ْىِف َنْوُلُخْدَي َاسالن َتْيَاَرَوِللا ِنْيِداًجاَوْفَا And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes Third Pair (that shows relation) رَج ،بْصَن ،عْفَر 18d

For example, we will take هُتْيَب instead of ِهللا ُتْيَب. ➢ There will be on effect on pronouns: اَـن ،ْمُـك ،يِـ ،َـك ،مُـه ،ـه. Let us use this pair in sentences and practice with TPI. هُتْيَب اَذٰه ــهُتْيَب Original state (رفع state) هَتْيَب دْيَز َلَخَد ــهَتْيَب When there is effect (نصب state) هِتْيَب ْيِف ٌدْيَز ــهِتْيَب After preposition (جر state) Note: For the third case, instead of هِتْيَب it is read هِتْيَب for the convenience. ➢ Let us take another examples with a female pronoun. اَهُّبَرُهللَا اَـــهُّبَر Original state (رفع state) اَهَّبَر ُدُبْع َ أ اَـــهَّبَر When there is effect (نصب state) اَِهبَرِب ُذْوُع َ أ اَـــهِبَر After preposition (جر state) ➢ Let us look at the effect of preposition on such pairs. If you have ْنِم + a pair of relation If you have ـِب + a pair of relation ْنِمــهِبَر +ْنِم ــهُّبَر ــهِبَرِب ـِب+ ــهُّبَر ْمِهــِبَر ْنِم +ْنِم ْمُــهُّبَر ْمِهــِبَرِب ـِب+ ْمُــهُّبَر َــكِبَر ْنِم +ْنِم َــكُّبَر َــكِبَرِب ـِب+ َــكُّبَر ْيــِبَر ْنِم +ْنِم ْيــِبَر ْيــِبَرِب ـِب+ ْيــِبَر ْنِمْمُــكِبَر +ْنِم ْمُــكُّبَر ْمُــكِبَرِب + ـِب ْمُــكُّبَر اَــنِبَر ْنِم +ْنِم اَــنُّبَر اَــنِبَرِب + ـِب اَــنُّبَر اَــهِبَر ْنِم +ْنِم اَــهُّبَر اَــهِبَرِب + ـِب اَــهُّبَر Third Pair (that shows relation) with pronouns 19a

The house of Allah ِهللا ُتْيَب The book of the Muslim ِمِلْسُمْال ُابَتِك The book of the Muslims َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ُابَتِك ➢ Practice these sentences showing only one TPI sign as only one word will change. َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ُابَتِك اَذٰه َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ُابَتِك Original state (رفع state) َنْيِمِلْسُمْال َابَتِك ُت ْ أَرَق َنْيِمِلْسُمْال َابَتِك When there is effect (نصب state) نْيِمِلْسُمْال ِابَتِك نِم ُتْبَتَك َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ِابَتِك After preposition (جر state) ➢ Now, instead of َنْيِمِلْسُمْال ُابَتِك we will take ْمُهُباَتِك. Remember that, in case of object, it will be ْمُهَباَتِك and after preposition ْمِهِباَتِك. Let us practice with TPI! ْمُهُباَتِك اَذٰه ْمُهُباَتِك Original state (رفع state) ْمُهَباَتِك ُت ْ أَرَق ْمُهَباَتِك When there is effect (نصب state) ْمِهِباَتِك نِم ُتْبَتَك ْمِهِباَتِك After preposition (جر state) ➢ Preposition affects the noun after it! Let us take three examples: دْعَب+ْنِم(after) لْبَ+قْنِم(before) +ْنِمونُد(other than) هِدْعَب ْنِم هِلْبَق نِم هِنْوُد نِم ْمِهِدْعَب ْنِم ْمِهِلْبَق نِم ْمِهِنْوُد نِم َكِدْعَب ْنِم َكِلْبَق نِم َكِنْوُد نِم ْيِدْعَب ْنِم ْيِلْبَق نِم ْيِنْوُد نِم ْنِمْمُكِدْعَب ْمُكِلْبَق نِم ْمُكِنْوُد نِم اَنِدْعَب ْنِم اَنِلْبَق نِم اَنِنْوُد نِم اَهِدْعَب ْنِم اَهِلْبَق نِم اَهِنْوُد نِم ➢ Let us take few examples from the Qur’an: ٰٰلَع ُهللا ُعَبْطَي َكِلٰذَكَنْيِرِفٰكْال ِبْوُلُق ُعْيِضُي ََل َللا نَاَّوَنْيِنِمْؤُمْال َرْجَا َوُهللاَنْيِنِمْؤُمْال ُّىِلَو Thus does Allah seal over the hearts of the disbelievers and [of the fact] that Allah does not allow the reward of believers to be lost And Allah is the ally of the believers Third Pair (that shows relation) with plurals 19b
- 17. www.understandquran.com 17 In this lesson, we will learn Three states of Nasb: (1) object; (2) for emphasis; and (3) to denote the reason. ➢ Remember this example: Why? The same? (emphasis) Who? ًةَاعَط اًرْكِذ َللا ُتْرَكَذ in obedience (to Him) remembrance Allah I remembered ➢ Let us take additional examples for each of the above three cases. 1. Examples from the Qur’an for: Who / What? (object). َ ْاَل ُهللا َقَلَخَضْر Allah created the earth ُبِرْضَيُهللاَ ْاَلِاسلنِل َالَثْم And Allah presents examples for the people اْوُلُتْقَت ََلَوَاْمُكََلدْو And do not kill your children 2. Examples from the Qur’an for: Emphasis. اًرْكِذ َللا واُرُكْذُا remember Allah with remembrance ًلْيِتْرَت َٰانْرُقْال ِلِتَر and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation ُهللا َمَّ ََكَوُمْيِ ْْكَت ىٰسْوًما And Allah spoke to Moses with [direct] speech 3. Examples from the Qur’an for: Why or for what? ق َلْمِا َةَيْشَخ ْمُكَد ََلْوَا ْۤواُلُتْقَت ََلَو And do not kill your children for fear of poverty ِتْوَمْال َرَذَح ِقِعاَوَّالص َنِم ْمِهِناَٰاذ ْۤىِف ْمُهَعِباَصَا َنْوُلَعْجَي They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death ِللا ِاتَضْرَم َءٓاَغِتْبا ُمُهَالَوْمَا َنْوُقِفنُي They spend their wealth seeking Allah's Pleasure 3 states of نصب19c

In this lesson we will learn additional three states of Nasb: (4) when or what time; (5) where; (6) in which condition – external/internal. ➢ Let us extend the example that we have seen in the last lesson. In what condition (external, internal) Where? When? ، اًدِعاَقاًفِئاَخ ِماَمِ ْاْل َفْلَخ اًاحَبَص ًةَاعَط اًرْكِذ َللا ُتْرَكَذ while sitting, afraid behind Imam in the morning 4. Examples from the Qur’an for: When or at what time? اًراَهَن ْوَا اًاتَيَب هُباَذَع ْمُىكٰتَا ْنِا if His torment should come to you by night or by day ِدْمَحِب ِْحبَسَوِسْمَّالش ِعْوُلُط َلْبَق َِكبَر and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Rabb before the rising of the sun اًراَهَنو ًلْيَل ْىِمْوَق ُتْوَعَد I have called my people night and day 5. Examples from the Qur’an for: Where? َتْحَت َكَنْوُعِياَبُي ْذِاِةَرَجَّالش when they gave their Bai'a (pledge) to you (O Muhammad SAW) under the tree ْمُكَقْوَف اَنْيَنَبَواًادَدِش اعْبَس And We have built above you seven strong (heavens) ِماَرَحْال ِدِجْسَمْال َدنِع ْمُهْوُلِتٰقُت ََلَو And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram 6. Examples from the Qur’an for: In which (external) condition? اًدْوُعُقو اًمٰيِق َهللا َنْوُرُكْذَي They remember Allah standing and sitting ًةَيْفُخو اًعُّرَضَت ْمُكَّبَر اْوُعْدُا Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret Examples from the Qur’an for: In which (internal) condition? ْوُعْادَواًفْوَخ ُهواًعَمَط and invoke Him with fear and hope Additional Three States of Nasb19d

Let us first recall the example that we have used to explain the Nasb states: In what condition (external, internal) Where? When? Why? The same? (emphasis) Who? ِئاَخ ، اًدِعاَقاًف َفْلَخِماَمِ ْاْل اًاحَبَص ًةَاعَط اًرْكِذ َللا ُتْرَكَذ while sitting, afraid behind Imam in the morning in obedience (to Him) remembrance Allah I remembered Let us extend the above example and say that in that condition, I prayed with the following words: In which area? Calling who? (in the pair that shows relation) َفَااًرِفاَغ رْيَخ َتن !ْيِل ْرِفْغِا َنْيِمَالَعْال َّبَر اَي So, You are the best in forgiving I said: O Lord of the worlds, Forgive me! Khabar of Kana Ism of Inna ُهللا َن ََكَواًرْوُفَغ َوَاُمَلْعَارْوُفَغ َللا ن and Allah is Forgiving. and I know that Allah is oft-Forgiving Negation of a class / category ُللا ََّلِإ َٰلهِإ ََل There is no god except Allah Let us take examples from the Qur’an for each one of these five additional states of Nasb. 7. Examples from the Qur’an for: Calling who? (in the pair that shows relation). ُلْهَاِبٰتِكْالِبٰتِكْال َلْهَٰۤيا O People of the Scripture ُءٓاَسِنِِىبالنِِىبالن َءٓاَسِنٰي O wives of the Prophet! اَنُّبَراَياَنَّبَر O our Rabb! 8. Examples from the Qur’an for: In which area? اًمْلِع ْىِنْدِز ِبَر O My Rabb! Increase me in knowledge. اًرِفاَغ رْيَخ ُللا Allah is the best in forgiving Additional five states of Nasb20a

We have learnt this in previous lessons. مْيِحَّر رْوُفَغ َللا نِا Indeed Allah is oft-Forgiving, most Merciful ِامْيَلَع مْيِكَح َكَّبَر ن Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing. اًدمَحُم ن َ أ ُدَهْش َ أِهللا ُلْوُسَّر I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the messenger of Allah. 10. Examples from the Qur’an for: The Khabar of َن ََك (and its sisters). We have learnt this one too in previous lessons. اًمْيِحَّر اًرْوُفَغ ُهللا َنََكَو And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful اًمْيِكَح اًمْيِلَع ُهللا َنََكَو and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise اًرْوُفَك ُانَسنِ ْاَل َنََكَو And ever is man ungrateful 11. Examples for Negation of a class or category. َبْيَر ََلِهْيِف ۛج٪ىلص٭ no doubt in it َمْلُظ ََلَمْوَيْال No injustice today! َلْوَح ََلَوَةَّوُق ََلََّلِإِللِاب No strength and no power except with Allah Example From Zikr Example From Adhan
- 21. www.understandquran.com 21 We have seen that the chopper word drops ن of these five verbs. Such verbs are called الَعْف َ أةَسْمَخ (the five verbs). They are classified in this way for us to remember the above change. Note again that the five verbs are: َنْيِلَعْفَت ،َنْوُلَعْفَت ،ِن َلَعْفَت َنْوُلَعْفَي ،ِن َلَعْفَي. There are five nouns (ةَسْمَخ اءَمْس َ أ) that are very special in Arabic. They are: ْوُذ ،ْوُف ،ْوُخ َ أ ،ْوُمَح ،ْوُب َ أ The special thing about them is the way they change their forms in the three states of رَج ،بْصَن ،َعَفَر. Let us practice these states for each of the five nouns with TPI. - 22. www.understandquran.com 22 ➢ Examples from the Qur’an - وُب َ أ َوَاْوُبْيِبَك ٌخْيَش اَنر ْوُب َ أ and our father is an old man دمَحُم َن ََك اَمۤاَبَاْمُكِلاَجِر ْنِم دَحَا اَب َ أ Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men ۤاَدَي ْتَّبَتْىِبَابَهَلَّبَتو ْيِب َ أ May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he ➢ Examples from the Quran - ْوُخ َ أ اَنَا ْۤىِنِا َالَقَكْوُخَا ْوُخ َ أ He said, Indeed, I am your brother ىٰسْوُم اَنْلَسْرَا مُثُاهَخَاَواَنِتٰيٰاِب ٪۟الَنْوُرٰه اَخ َ أ Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs ىٰسْوُم ٰلِا ۤاَنْيَحْوَاَوِهْيِخَاَو ْيِخ َ أ And We inspired to Moses and his brother ➢ Examples from the Quran - ْوُف اَفَغُلْبَيِل ِءٓاَمْال ىَلِا ِهْيَّفَك ِطِساَبَكُاهَف like the one who stretches his hands toward water [from afar, calling it] to reach his mouth ➢ Examples from the Quran – ْوُذ ِمْيِظَعْال ِلْضَفْال وُذ ُهللاَو ْوُذ And Allah is the possessor of great bounty ِنْيَنْرَقْال اَذٰي اْوُالَق اَذ They said: O Dhul-Qarnayn ِرْكِالذ ىِذ ِنٰاْرُقْالَو ْيِذ By the Qur'an containing reminder
- 23. www.understandquran.com 23 You have learnt the three states of a typical noun and also used them in the examples: The Muslim came. َءاَجمِلْسُم مِلْسُم Original state (رفع state) Zaid saw the Muslim. اًمِلْسُم دْيَز ى ٰ أَر اًمِلْسُم When there is effect (نصب state) Zaid heard from the Muslim. ْنِم دْيَز َعِمَسمِلْسُم مِلْسُم After preposition (جر state) However, there are some interesting exceptions to the signs on certain nouns, for example: ُرَبْك َ أ ُهللَا ٰٰلَع َتْيَّلَص اَمَكِإٰٰلَعَو َمْيِهاَرْبَمْيِهاَرْبِإ ِلٰا Such nouns are called Partially Flexible Nouns. They do not take any Tanween on them nor any Kasrah when they are in Jarr state. No Tanween, No Kasrah. Fully flexible noun ِلْسُمم Original state (رفع state) ِلْسُماًم When there is effect (نصب state) ِلْسُمم After preposition (جر state) Partially Flexible Nouns َبْك َ أُر ْيِهاَرْبِإُم Original state (رفع state) َبْك َ أَر ْيِهاَرْبِإَم When there is effect (نصب state) َبْك َ أَر ْيِهاَرْبِإَم After preposition (جر state) Partially Flexible Nouns20c No Tanween No Kasrah

To remember their types let us make a story of word types given in the right column (The left column shows additional examples of each word type). Read the words downwards while reading this story. معاوية and مريم got married. They were blessed with عمر ،انعف ،أحمد ،.إبراهيم The family went to مصر for vacation. They ate in مطاعم (restaurants) and were very سعداء (happy). However, معاوية was very much غضبان because of heavy مصاريف (expenses). ةَيِواَعُمةَزْمَح ،ةَفْيَذُح ،ةَماَس ُ أ َمَيْرَمبَنْيَز ،ةَشِئاَع ،ةَمِطاَف مْيِهاَرْبِإ ،نْوُراَق ،انَماَه ،نْوَعْرِف ،بْوُقْعَي ،اقَحْسِإ ،لْيِعاَمْسِإ تْوُراَم ،تْوُراَه دَمْح َ أمَحْر َ أ ،رَبْك َ أ ،مَرْك َ أ انَّفَعانَمْلَس ،انَمْثُع ،انَضَمَر ُرَمُعُلَحُز ،ُرَضُم رْصِمَل ،ةَّكَمنَدِلباَب ،ن مِعاَطَمِدجاَسَم ،بِراَشَم ،عِفاَنَم اءَدَعُسَقُع ،اءَمَلُع ،اءَفَلُخَلء انَبْضَغانَعْبَش ،َانَبْعَت ،انَعْوَج يفِراَصَمتْيِقاَوَم ،بْيِراَحَم ،حْيِباَصَم There are some exceptions to the جر ،نصب ،رفع rules for these partially flexible nouns that you will study later on.

Pick verses 30 till 37 from the Mushaf and try to identify the three states on different nouns and verbs using very light marks with a pencil.
