Everything Old is New Again: The Fundamentals of Fundraising in the Digital World
The game of fundraising and community engagement seems to be constantly shifting. New tools, new trends, new challenges all seem to be vying for attention, and charities are being held to account for every penny spent and every hour worked and volunteered. How do you tie together traditional fundraising with the brave new world of fundraising and campaign-building online? Learn why online giving is an extension of everything you already know, and why most of us could improve both our online and offline fundraising using techniques that are as ‘old as the hills’. Finally, discover why online fundraising actually emphasizes the need for proper and targeted traditional offline fundraising, marketing, and communications.
Websites 101
Your website is one of the most important communication vehicles you have - is it working for your organization the way it should? Take your website from good to great by learning the fundamentals of what makes for a really good website, one that is user-friendly, attractive and drives up online donations.
We live in the 21st century, and volunteerism is shifting and changing to meet the times. More and more volunteers are looking for ways to use technology to support the missions they hold dear.
With the rise of digital volunteers, nonprofits need to have systems and practices that encourage, validate, and support this new trend.
We will review ideas and strategies that other nonprofits have used to capitalize on the digital volunteer. We will have plenty of time for live Q&A, so prepare your largest concerns for discussion.
At the end of this presentation you will have
An idea of what features your volunteer system should have
A good plan for utilizing small aspects of social media for large impact
Ways to engage volunteers with different time requirements.

A Networked Nonprofit is a simple, agile and transparent organization that lets outsiders in and insiders out. Large or small, they work more like a network than a single organization.
In The Networked Nonprofit: Connecting With Social Media To Drive Change, co-author Beth Kanter shows how social media is catalyzing a shift away from "organization-centric" advocacy, governance and communications toward a "networked" approach.
What you'll learn:
- How to understand social networks through social network analysis
- How to do more with less by leveraging your network
- How to create a social culture at your nonprofit
- How and why you must value relationships as well as transaction

You’re already overwhelmed. And yet every day there is more and more information to filter. For you: What strategies, tools and techniques do you need for this new literacy? How do you find the trusted sources that curate the information you need each day? How can you ensure that the information you find, use and act on is credible? For the people you serve: How can you become (or remain!) a trusted source of information and enhance your reputation? What if you could find/share something once and have it show up everywhere you need it to be?
Attendees Will Walk Away With:
• A strategy for handling information overload
• Free, practical online tools they can implement immediately
• Connections to sites, experts, resources to help them with the above (i.e. early adopters who are testing this all out and thinking deeply on this stuff for you!).

Marco has worked with the web and social media for numerous non-profits and believes that technology is valuable when it is connected to our daily work. Marco believes that social media is a means to an end. You probably care about the end. This is reasonable.
How do you get men to take action on ending violence against women? Well, you talk them into walking a mile wearing high heels of course! This workshop will look at how the White Ribbon Campaign has worked to transform online interest into concrete, offline actions in our work to engage men in ending violence against women. Two of our campaigns, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, and “It Starts With You, It Stays With Him” will be highlighted.
Takeaways:
- How to use social media to foster change on a challenging social issue
- How to translate online interest into offline action

Learn more about your CanadaHelps donors and why they give! CanadaHelps and McMaster teamed up in the summer of 2010 to survey CanadaHelps donors. We wanted to understand more about who’s giving online in Canada: where they live, when they were born and what their interests are. We also wanted to know what motivates Canadians to give – when, why and how are they moved to make a donation. The findings will surprise and delight you!
In this special 2-part webinar series, we’ll explore the results of the survey and delve deeper into what this means for your charity in terms of online fundraising. In Part 1, we’ll explore the finding of the survey in-depth. Part 2 will focus on your next action steps for engaging more online donors.

When you evaluate your fundraising efforts - you have two sets of data sources: what you think and what you know. What you think is often based on gut, proven experience or conventional wisdom about performance. What you know is based on data analysis, proven statistics or measurable trends. To drive real fundraising results, you need to validate what you think with what you know and then take action. In this interactive session, participants will do a self-assessment of their fundraising efforts and then learn real strategies to translate what they know into an action plan to increase fundraising. With a special emphasis on event fundraising, we will address change management, participant and donor relations, segmenting communications and using technology to maximize fundraising.
Takeaways
An understanding of how your data should inform and influence your fundraising strategies
Strategies to take your analysis and turn it into a fundraising action plan
How to effectively introduce the plan to your organization and engage them in the implementation

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
