The Merits And Merits Of Media Coverage Of Terrorism Essay
Q. Using any case/s of your choice, discuss the merits and de merits of media coverage of terrorism.
Introduction: From the outset, the paper makes clarity of the key terms terrorism and media coverage.
According to Magstadt (2009:506) terrorism has been defined in many ways, but the most definitions
take into account several factors including violence s, the desire for publicity, political motive and
intimidation aimed at the civilian populations. Jerkins (n.d.) terrorism is the use or threatened use of
force designed to bring about political change . As depicted from the above definitions activities of
terrorism have gone through premeditation stage, implementation and more to be fulfilled. In 1983 the
world woke up to the breaking news that terrorists bombed the United States Embassy in Beirut and
killed 63 people. Other acts of terrorism followed and in 1995 the world was shocked to hear that
members of the Aum Shinrikyo released deadly sarin gas in the Tokyo subway in five coordinated
attacks killing 12 and severely injuring 50 and causing temporary vision problems for others and this
is classified as domestic terrorism practiced within a single country by terrorists with no ties to
another government. As if that was enough, in August 1998 a large car bomb explodes in the central
district of Omagh, Northern Ireland killing 29 people and injuring 330. Dreadfully, four commercial
jet airliners are hijacked from East Cost Airport, two were directed to crash into the

Unrequited Emotions In Ralph Waldo Emerson s Poetry
Ralph Waldo Emerson was philosophical person so he had his views differently and express
throughout the poem, that poet puts his feelings and emotion to abstract words. Poems give idea just
like songs where it define meanings. By this people can define the meaning of the poem. The poet use
one s acts are like fair pictures of an object as people. Ralph Waldo Emerson s poems cause
unrequited emotions through the use of abstract nature ideas which reflects human emotion and
experience.
Human have emotion attached to love. Love is an emotion which a person feel towards one or more
subject, object or person. Emerson use give all to love as an example where the feeling is human
nature. Give all to love;Obey thy heart As this, a person can not literally give anything to love as the
word love is not a person or living thing that person can give anything. Love is a series of binaries or

Review Of Robert Mundell s Trilemma Essay
Section I: Exchange Rates Paper
Robert Mundell s Trilemma, also known as the Impossible Trinity, states that a nation cannot realize
monetary policy autonomy, free capital movements, and exchange rate stability at the same time.
While either of the two goals can combine and actualize in any given period, as a simultaneous and
three fold effort, each objective cannot coexist. Together they are simply incompatible. Thus, and
holding true to the tradeoff nature of economics, Mundell s undisputed theory illustrates that in order
for a nation to attain its preferred monetary goals it must give up one desired option. Nevertheless, it is
no easy decision. Before any resolution is made, nations must invest substantial time and energy into
understanding the consequences at stake because the policies that they do deicide to implement are not
only felt at a national or international level but personally amongst those that they govern.
To exemplify the tradeoffs that define the Trilemma s policy combinations, consider a nation with a
long history of high inflation and a central bank that has limited credibility. Bearing in mind that low
inflation is a primary macroeconomic goal amongst world powers and likened to symbolize economic
stability, would not the aim of the nation be to promote steady financial growth through deflation?
And while the costs of inflation are substantially high on their own, when coupled with uncertainty
produced by an unreliable central bank the costs are only

Convergence Of Vengeance
The Convergence of Vengeance and Justice
Distinctly, it s those with nothing that are willing to risk everything owing to the fact that nihility
cannot be placed in jeopardy. It s such people that can allow their morals to subside, acting as a
grenade causing unparalleled damage in a moment; whilst leaving the impact of destruction to last a
lifetime. They implode, but never restore. I witnessed such an act twenty years ago almost to this day
and I still recall it as vividly now as I did then. The instantaneous switch of day into night occurred far
more hurriedly than ordinary as though foreboding of the events that frigid winter night would entail. I

Reflection On Swimming
Introduction
At the beginning of the semester, the health behaviour change I started pursuing is to swim regularly.
My goal of engage in this exercise is to acquire and grasp at least one swimming style by the end of
this semester, and the outcome I expect to obtain from it is the improvement of physical fitness.
Swimming is a strength consuming aerobic exercise that brings a variety benefits to one s
physiological and psychological states. Scholarly research has indicated that swimming contributes to
weight loss and acceleration of illness recovery (Yuan et al., 2016). Also, it can improve emotional
state, physical mobility and functional capacity, all of which can lead to a better quality of life
(Karapolat et al., 2009). Leg arm coordination and neural plasticity were both found to be correlated
with long term swimming behaviour. For aerobic exercises in general, it enhances pulmonary
functions and cognitive functions.
Methods
Dosage. After referring to my school and work schedule, I decided to swim at least two times a week.
Since I was a novice of swimming, I registered a swimming lesson for beginners at Hart House fitness
centre. The sessions took place every Monday and each took 50 minutes. My attendance of the lesson
each week was counted towards the dosage, which means that apart from the lesson, I intend to swim
by myself at least once a week to practice and strengthen what I had learned in the lesson. For each
practice session, I aimed on swimming 40 to 50

Interview write up 2
2:55 friday afternoon, I took a deep breath as my stomach turned inside itself as if doing somersaults
over and over. I sat there waiting for the interview call from Connor. Conor McMurdo, A highschool
graduate now at Cal Poly, offered to to help me on my project. I had never met him before; however,
he was recommended by my english teacher for doing his senior project on making his own surfboard.
Interviewing someone you have never met is always a little nerve racking. My stomach felt these first
time jitters as I picked up the phone to call Connor. Connor answered the phone with a friendly
disposition and a few questions about me. I in turn thanked him for his help and his time and asked
him how school was. Connor started surfing when he was 12. He started because it was a way to
connect with his dad and to evade his stress of life. Once Connor became good at surfing he started
teaching others his passion. Connor wanted to; share this peaceful way to have fun and relieve stress
of pretty much anything with other people while teaching them. His goal in ... Show more content on

Trade Between Africa and Eurasia Changed During the Era of...
Although key elements of the trade between Africa and Eurasia changed during the era of 300 1450, a
few factors stayed the same. In 300 C.E., trade routes were primarily between Europe and North
Africa. The way that they changed by the time of 1450 was that they expanded southward and
westward. By 1450, these trade routes went through West Africa, sub Saharan Africa, and the Indian
Ocean. One factor that stayed the same during this time period was that the northern coast of Africa
was always involved in the trade between Africa and the rest of Eurasia.
At the start of this period in 300 C.E, Afro Eurasian trade was not very sophisticated. There was some
collaboration with cultures in the Mediterranean. European goods were brought to ... Show more

This continued from the 800s to the 1300s. At this point of the time period, the Mongols had expanded
throughout Eurasia. However, the only parts of the trade that were affected were the northern parts
between Europe and Asia, because the Mongols concentrated on mostly China, Russia, and some parts
of Eastern Europe. By the 1450s, the gold salt trade started to decline, and soon, the center of trade
started to shift away from the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. This was because the age of
exploration started in Europe, and trade concentrated more towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Even though these aspects describe the ways that change occurred with trade between Afro Eurasia,
one important part did stay the same. North Africa was consistent and always a key part of trade
between the continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 300, North Africa was the only area that traded
with the Mediterranean. In the time of the gold salt trade, European venders and Islamic merchants
arrived in North Africa. North African merchants still traded even when Europeans started to shift the
balance of trade to the Americas starting from the mid 1400s. This is how trade systems between
Africa and Europe stayed the same between the years 300 1450.
The changes that took place regarding trade between 300 1450 impact other parts of history. One
effect of the occurrence of trade in this region was the

Support Of The 2016 Pathfinder Award Nomination For...
I write this in strong support of the 2016 Pathfinder Award nomination for Isabella (Bella) Greene, a
student at Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches. At the outset, let me state that Bella is an
extraordinary student and it is truly a pleasure to write this letter about her.
When Bella first contacted me in 2014 expressing her interest in working in my lab, I gladly accepted
her. High School students in general are very busy with their studies, homework and extracurricular
activities. From the beginning, she committed herself to a weekly average lab work schedule of 12 14
hours along with additional time on the weekends for the opportunity to learn new procedures. The
kind of passion and commitment Bella exhibited is truly exceptional.
My laboratory focuses on understanding the basic mechanisms of memory storage and aging
associated cognitive dysfunction and we are actively trying to develop novel therapeutics for
Alzheimer s disease. Bella is involved in a project that is aimed at elucidating the molecular
underpinnings of the establishment and maintenance of excitatory and inhibitory synapses. The
molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain elusive. Bella s goal is to determine whether a
specific family of molecular motor proteins, kinesins, plays a critical role in this process. There are
about 40 different kinesins and she wanted to identify a specific kinesin that is responsible for the
establishment and maintenance of components of excitatory and

Business Value Chain Analysis Of Diageo
Diageo s code for business value creation does involve their tangible assets, however other
organizations can easily buy them, so these are rarely the source of competitive advantage. The
greatest tangible source that is not easily obtainable by other companies is their own resource to
produce raw and unique materials to their own products. Diageo has competitors purchase materials
from their owned and operated distilleries and land to make their own product. Intangible assets are
difficult to measure and can t be touched or seen. These assets drive innovation and contribute to
Diageo s success and competitive edge in the market place. Above, examining Diageo s unique mix of
resources explores how Diageo develops certain resources necessary to support corporate strategy. As
we have reviewed, Diageo has a purpose, vision, mission and objective, and has strategically
implemented internal assets and has the capability and resources to deliver their strategy. Diageo is
interested in growing their people and business as well as improving financial returns and shareholder
value to avoid situations of competitive parity. These views emphasize asset valuation using
accounting and economic measures over effectiveness measures and lack a holistic approach to
understanding value as an internally driven strategic effort (Barney 2001; Hawawini et al 2000). The
RBV performed here on Diageo showcases how Diageo creates value and profits from their internal
resources and focuses

Nothing Wrong With Child Labor In The United States
Nothing Wrong With Child Labor
Imagine sending your son or daughter to work just to stay out of poverty or just to get by. This is what
some brave parents have to do to their children. The Fundamental reason many families in developing
nations send children to work is for plain survival. Wages earned by these children can mean the
difference between passable subsistence or being absolutely miserable. Although sending children way
before the age of 15 16 may seem terrible looking at what children are working with dangerous tools,
it s a way to stay out of poverty, and to continue on with life.
Although sending children to work young may seem bad, but being in a poor situation just a little
more money can help a family a lot. According to Douglas Clement, families in developing nations
send their children to daily jobs, despite the hardships they ll endure. he has a positive analysis on
working as a child, has benefits to families in developing nations. This proves child labor isn t, all that
bad and helps out in developing nations children that really need funds. Therefore child labor should
be acceptable than letting kids suffer from absolute poverty, only to a certain degree and not having
kids work in hazardous workplaces. In addition to U.S. State laws in Sheryl Delozier s article in

competition from child workers, but families lose income from their children . This shows that the act
of banning child labor can cause families to lose money. Therefore action should be taken so children
can work in safe environments. And banning child labor would kill families in developing nations. In
addition children still work says Clement but their hours and activities have been severely curtailed by
both custom and law. Hence banning child labor should be out of the

Clara Machumann s Impact On Society
Franz Schubert is known to be one of the last classical composers and one of the first romantic
composer. Schubert s music is well known for its melody and harmony. Although he was a fantastic
composer, his music did not become as recognized until he had already passed. His vocal
contributions were written for both male and female voices, as well as mixed voices. Schubert is
considered to be a Romantic composer for many reasons, some being were that he combined
Romantic poetry and music, and that he was extremely emotional which led to his melodies and
feelings. Schubert s life and personality also were a huge impact that made him fit into the Romantic
stereotype. He came from a poor family and lived a miserable life. Throughout his life, he was always
known to be a loner which help him be the creative person he always was. Schubert died very young
at the age of 31 and was very sick; Syphillis.
Robert and Clara Schumann were a couple that were in love. Their story is full of music, love, and
marriage. Before marriage, they went through a difficult time of parental disapproval and gossip.

A Traditional Indian Culture And American Culture
Identity and Names
The names we are given are essential in forming our identity. It is the way we are addressed by
everyone starting from birth. It is the beginning of how we define ourselves in our own terms `as a
result of growing up and experiencing life. In Indian culture, from The Namesake, the grandmother
chooses a good name for the child before they are born. Gogol was supposed to be a pet name only
used by family and close friends. For Gogol, his name highlights his differences to everyone else, but
more importantly, himself. He endures a consistent struggle with his two cultures throughout the
novel. He, as a young adult, is searching for acceptance of both his traditional Indian culture and
American culture. The Namesake, explores the theme of identity by examining the differences of both
cultures. He has two names and therefore two identities, Gogol and Nikhil, and throughout the novel
he looks for a way to incorporate them into one whole.
Naming a child following Bengali tradition is extremely different in comparison to American culture.
This highlights the importance of a child finding their own way in their own time, but also allows the
parents to choose the best name. When it comes to naming the child, that honor is given to an elder
relative. There are always two names that a Bengali child will have: a pet name and a good name. In
the case of Gogol the letter containing his names was never received and considered lost. Therefore,
his parents chose the name

The Debate Over Unauthorized Use Of A Person s Art Work
In contemporary photography a major issue has been debate over unauthorized use of a person s art
work to create something new. Appropriation is the most frequently used word whenever a body of
work comes into question. Exploring deeper into this phrase used to justifying stealing, may sound
simple on the surface, but appropriation has been a hot topic for many legal battles that can favor
either side. Photographers and other artist are constantly in and out of court, fighting that their works
is being infringed, while others argue originality. What guideline is there to protect someone from
their being considered stolen? Exploring the laws behind appropriation and plagiarism, as well some
photographer that fought on both sides may give a better idea of on how one can protect them. The
first step to understanding the controversy appropriation is to know the definition, The MOCA in Los
Angeles states, To appropriate is to borrow. Appropriation is the practice of creating a new work by
taking a pre existing image from another context art history, advertising, the media and combining that
appropriated image with new ones. Or, a well known artwork by someone else may be represented as
the appropriator s own. Such borrowings can be regarded as the two dimensional equivalent of the
found object. But instead of, say, incorporating that found image into a new collage, the postmodern
appropriator redraws, repaints, or rephotographs it. This definition in itself can leave

Functions Of The Respiratory System
Functions of the Respiratory System
Introduction
The main purpose of the respiratory system is to exchange oxygen and carbon monoxide between the
body and the environment. Throughout the body are specific organs and structures that make the
respiratory system possible. In humans, respiration takes place in the lungs. In the article by Kim Ann
Zimmermann, Respiratory System: Facts, Function, and Diseases she explains how the series of
organs in a person s body work together to exchange the gases we breathe and distribute it throughout
the rest of the body.
This information is useful for any person wanting to know more about their body, a medical student,
and people in the healthcare field. This report will go over the parts of the respiratory system starting
with the first step in the process to the last step.
Description of Each Part of the Respiratory System
Mouth/Nose The nose and mouth are part of the facial area in humans. The main purpose for both is to
let in and out air. The nose is responsible for a human s sense of smell. The mouth is responsible for
the intake of fo od and water.
Trachea The trachea is a broad membranous tube assisted by rings of cartilage. The main purpose is to
provide air flow to and from the lungs.
Lungs The lungs are two organs located within the rib cage. They consist of elastic sacs with tubes and
airway passages which air is brought in so that carbon dioxide will be removed and the oxygen will go
into the blood.

[unused38]on s Moral Sense, By Hutcheson And Shaftesbury
Hutcheson and Shaftesbury believed that human nature contained all it needed to make moral
decisions, along with inclinations to be moral. Moral sense is a kind of sense because, like external
senses, it is common to all mankind. It is independent of our will and its deliverances are not
conclusions mediated by premises. In particular it is not mediated by considerations of personal
advantage or harm. It is on account of this feature that we are able to admire actions that took place in
remote times and regions and even actions that are contrary to our own interests .
Moral philosophers say that the main contribution of Hutcheson to the concept of moral sense is that
he describes the working of moral sense. The process, Hutcheson described, ... Show more content on

Approbation of our own action is given when we are pleased with ourselves for doing the action
and/or pleased with our intentions for doing the action. Hutcheson puts it this way: Approbation of our
own action denotes, or is attended with, a pleasure in the contemplation of it, and in reflection upon
the affections which inclined us to it . Consider what happens when someone picks up and returns
something that another person drops. In response to the action, the person who picked up the dropped
item would have feelings of approbation toward his own action. This person would be happy with
what he did, especially after giving it some thought. Further, they would be pleased if their own
intentions were ones with which they could also be pleased. The intention could possibly be that they
just wanted to help this person; however, if the intention was to gain advantage with the other person,
then they would not be as pleased with themselves. Approbation of another s action is much the same
except that the observer is pleased to witness the action of the other person and feels affection toward
the agent of the action. Again Hutcheson writes: Approbation of the action of another has some little
pleasure in attending it in the observer, and raises love toward the agent, in whom the quality
approved is deemed to reside, and not in the observer, who has

painted at the time. She wears an abnormally dark, basic dress with a creased bodice, with gold
weaving. The dress has a low neck area that uncovered her chest. She is not wearing any adornments
and a scarf dangles from her left shoulder. There is a cover hanging over her marginally muddled hair,
accepted to be a grieving shroud.
The fine dull cloak that spreads Mona Lisa s hair is frequently accepted to be a grieving cover, a bit of
apparel worn to symbolize social position. However, the subject s dress is fairly basic and standard
and neither her outfit nor the scarf around her neck demonstrates her highborn standing.

Why Physical Therapy
Why Be a Physical Therapist?!
Sometimes in life we don t know which direction to take in choosing the best career for us. I was once
in that place knowing that I wanted to do something in the medical field but I didn t know exactly
what. After doing some research I came across physical therapy and how rewarding it is to become
one. Knowing that I can make a difference in people s lives meant a lot to me. I suggest many to
follow the physical therapy career path. You will work one on one, see them progress through
treatment, and know that you are making a difference in their lives, (said APTA Meredith Harris).

The Suicide Note By Janice Mirikitani
TOPIC
There are times when we feel like we must be perfect in other to please others. No matter if we did the
best we could, if it isn t perfect, we felt like a failure. We want the approval that comes with
perfectness but perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be our best. Perfectionism is not
about healthy achievement and growth; it s a shield. Perfectionism is refusal to accept any standard
short of perfection. Suicide Note, by Janice Mirikitani, is about an Asian American college student
who commits suicide by jumping from her dormitory window. This poem is read as the suicide note
that was left behind by this young woman to apologize to her parent s for having received less than a
perfect four point grade average and not being perfect in life. Her last thoughts and feelings were left
on this note, describing why she did what she did. The pressure to succeed that this student felt from
herself and her parents was far too much to overcome. Even though the girl worked really hard and
did her very best, it wasn t good enough in her mind and maybe in her parents minds to be worthy of
her parents love or life itself and so her only option was death to atone for her sin of imperfection.
Sometimes pressure to succeed that a student feels from herself and her parents is far too much to
overcome.
This poem begins by describing some of the harsh feelings associated with failure. She starts by

An Overview On The Investment Services Industry
Industry Information and Overview:
The investment services industry is one of the fastest paced and rapidly evolving sectors of the
economy. The industry is highly dependent on the state of the economy and is highly cyclical. In 2000
when established firms in the industry began to tap the potential of the Internet, trading volumes
crashed in what is now termed the Dot Com bubble. In 2002 when it seemed that innovative
technology and telecommunications companies would continuously improve business productivity,
the technology and telecom sectors crashed. More recently, just when the industry thought it figured
out how to rig the mortgage market to secure record profits with little to no risk, the entire mortgage
market crashed and created a liquidity crisis and a recession that would be later described as the Great
Recession. Investment services firms have learned time and time again that they still must contend
with an inevitable cycle of boom and bust.
The primary functions of an Investment Bank:
Raising Capital and Security Underwriting: One function of an Investment Bank is to package and
issue securities for sale to clients, companies or the general public. An investment bank would for
example facilitate the sale of shares of a previously private company that would like to go public and
offer those shares for sale to investors on an open market. The investment bank would determine the
value of the security and the underlying risk of the asset in order to sell it at an

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Ci Engine
Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Diesel engine is a very popular prime mover used for surface transportation, agricultural machinery
needs and in industries. Diesel engines of more than 6.5 million units are being used only in the Indian
agricultural sectors for different activities and the import of petroleum products is a major draw off on
our foreign exchange sectors and with increasing demand in future years the condition is likely to
become worse.
Hence, it is an urgent need for a country like India to search for an option to run CI engine using a
different fuel than the conventional and petroleum based diesel and recently biodiesel, as CI engine
fuel alternative, has received more attention among many other possible options. Biodiesel has also ...

under environmental conditions when spilled, as it is 100% organic product.
1.8.3 Economic Benefits of Biodiesel The biodiesel can be extracted from any material that contains
fatty acids. The various vegetable fats and oils, animal fats, waste greases and edible oil processing
wastes can be used as feedstock for the production of biodiesel. The future needs for imported oil to
manufacture regular diesel fuel could be reduced by the significant use of biodiesel. The cost of
biodiesel is most likely to remain stable than fossil fuel costs in future, as fossil fuel supplies
decreases over time. As biodiesel is produced from agricultural feed stocks, it helps in improving
economy in rural areas. Some minor changes are needed in refuelling structures and spare parts
inventories. It is the only alternative fuel that runs in any conventional unmodified diesel engine.
Based on mutagenicity tests, 90% reduction in cancer risks are possible using biodiesel. Major engine
problems can be attended by the diesel skilled mechanics only.

Malnutrition And Nutrition
Approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year ( World Child Hunger Facts ). Hunger
for a long period of time results in malnutrition which is the lack of proper nutrition, caused by not
having enough to eat. Hunger and malnutrition is a serious problem faced by many children across the
globe. It is even more prevalent among the developing countries of Asia and Africa where millions of
children are underweight because they do not get enough to eat. Not only does the malnutrition
severely affect children s physical and mental health, it also affect their academics. Malnutrition has
several negative effects on a child s learning and school performance as it can lead to lower
attendance, unsatisfactory student behavior, and poor academic performance.
School plays a huge role in children s development as it teaches them to think differently and provides
them with the skills necessary for success. It also helps children get out of poverty and encourages
them to bring positive changes to their society. Identifying the effects of malnutrition on academic
performance is important because education is every child s right and not having enough to eat
prevents them from performing at their full potential.
Hunger and Malnutrition negatively affects school attendance. Malnutrition leads to more school
absences which affects children s academic performance. A study conducted in Southwest Ethiopia by
Tefera Belachew et al found that food insecure adolescents were nearly

Absolutism Dbq
After the Renaissance, there were many factors that gave way and led to chaos, and then the choice
between an absolutist government, or a constitutional one. These factors included the decline of the
previous social order of Feudalism, the Protestant Reformation, new logical and scientific ideas from
famed Renaissance thinkers, and riots/revolts from unhappy citizens of numerous classes. Some states
like France, Russia, and Prussia, resulted in all the power gathered under the monarch s personal
control, which happened due to comparable actions by the ruler. In the 1600s and 1700s, Absolute

They all had similar tactics in taxation, but each had economic policies which resembled one another.
Colbert, Louis XIV s financial manager, promoted mercantilism, a policy of maintaining a favorable
balance of trade in order to accumulate wealth. These mercantilist policies massively boosted France s
economy. The French people were to produce everything they needed, exports were increased, and
immigration by talented peoples was encouraged. Positively, this approach allowed France to become
a competitor in trade. As a result, France surged in power and wealth, giving Louis XIV the ability and
money to reform other areas of the government. Likewise, Peter the Great was inspired by his travels
to use mercantilist ideas. More money meant more opportunity to better the country. Furthermore, he
boosted industry and production of raw materials. This whole economic sector was underneath the
monarchy s control, in order to promote the success Peter the Great saw necessary and fit.
Correspondingly, in Prussia, the next Hohenzollern was Frederick the Great, who applied enlightened
absolutist ideas to the economy. Frederick took a more humane approach to policy, which would
strengthen the state, and he also reconstructed agriculture and industry. Altogether, the monetary and
financial systems these enlightened rulers employed were to make more money. More financial
capabilities would result in a stronger state, due to the ability to accomplish more goals, and a better

The Relationship Between Literacy And Symbolic Play
Worthington (2011) stated that: Play is a complex landscape where children s thinking and the
complexity of their ideas and signs deserve closer attention, if practitioners are to understand and truly
value children s meaning making.
Children s self chosen and spontaneous imagined scenarios and their play are in possibilities because
they are the children s own and in their culture (Riojas Cortez, 2001 in Carruthers et al, 2011). There
is a direct relationship between children s meaning making in play and in their ability to use mark and

The Opium Wars
Imperial China was one of the greatest civilizations. It was leading in its inventions, trading routes,
and craftsmanship. Beginning in 221 BC, it lasted up till the final Qing Dynasty. It s downfall can be
attributed to the introduction of the drug, opium, from the west. It s introduction inspired two wars,
namely The Opium wars of the 19th century. In the 18th century, the country was flourishing, while it
had control of international trade. By the 19th century, China had lost control of trade and was
struggling with mass amounts of poverty and addiction.
Many assume that because of the Qing Dynasty 1644 1912, China had no outside contact with the
world. However, this is false. Since the 16th century the imperial court had been receiving European
diplomatic and religious missions. From 1760 Canton or what is called now Guangzho, a city north
easy of Hong Kong, had the monopoly on foreign trade within China. During this time, China had
many cultural and diplomatic procedures involving foreign trade. Foreigners interacted with Cohongs,
licensed chinese merchants. More and more Europeans began to get involved with trade in China and
the city of Canton flourished with international trade. China had many exotic and high quality
products to sell to Europeans. Silk, tea, herbs, spices, and porcelain were among the chief exports.
Tea, being the most popular export to Great Britain, was in high

Eunuchs are generally defined as castrated males and are thus excellent choices to guard the Mogul s

showing the eunuch as the Mogul s right hand man . But with the passing of time these traditional

There are several roads that lead to a boy becoming a hijra. One way into the hijra life is to be

process, there is no way for the boys to escape and reintegrate back into mainstream society. They are
made permanent outcast.
Those with gender identities and orientations outside of the mainstream are welcomed by the hijra
communities. In Indian society boys must exhibit their heterosexuality by puberty if not, they are

writings are, Causation of Law 1959, Concept of Law 1961, Law liberty and Morality 1963, Of Laws

work, Concept of Law 1961. The book analyses on the law, morality and fear or threat through which
the author is attempting to classify the question as to whether the law can be conceptualized as the
forceful orders or the moral commands. Prof. Hart is of the opinion that all laws need not be classified
as coercive or moral commands, there need not be any logical connection between the Laws, and
morality or between the laws and coercion. He is of the opinion that by classifying all laws as either
moral commands or coercive orders will be misleading and mischaracterizing the purpose and
function for which the law was originally created. Different laws have different applicability as it is
drawn from several sources and there exists a purpose for which a law will be created. Laws are made
to curtail the actions of man, and to prohibit him from various kinds of actions. These are called duties
which a person has to do as he is bound by the law to do it. In case of breach of this duty, the law
imposes a punishment which a person has to undergo to keep an order in the society. The

Examples Of Byronic Hero In Jane Eyre
Byronic Heros were first introduced in Lord Byron s writing and have since then been utilized in
many different writings. In the novel Jane Eyre (1847), Charlotte Bronte creates a character that
symbolizes a Byronic Hero. Nevertheless, Mr. Rochester is considered a Byronic Hero due to certain
characteristics he has, however, this is only to an extent, as he lacks some qualities of a Byronic Hero.
He is central to the theme of Jane Eyre because he, like many others in in the novel, are searching for
a place to belong and find self identity.
Throughout the novel, it is asserted that Mr. Rochester owns the characteristics of Isolation/Wander
and Rejects Social Norms that a Byronic Hero holds. Mr. Rochester is isolated from society and exiled
by the upper class but only partially, due to his large sum of wealth. Although Rochester did not exile
himself by choice, he is considered peculiar by the other prosperous townsfolk for rejecting social
norms which causes him to be isolated. Bronte states this cause and effect chain through one of her

everyone to isolate him and cause him to wander, leaving him moody and temperamental which also

Rochester does lack the quality of superior intellect, the abundance of the other qualities make it so
that he is indeed considered a Byronic Hero. All these qualities of a Byronic Hero are somehow

This may require a fashion shoot by a reputable fashion photographer, a model, make up artist,

The finished artwork is assembled digitally in the digital studio by a graphic designer, under the
direction of the art director. Once the ad is completed and proofed, it goes back to the client for final

Terrorism Between Terrorism And Terrorism
Question ‐ What trends are evident in terrorism over the past 5 years? How have these trends impacted
on the ways in which counter terrorism has responded in the Australian context?
Introduction
Terrorism poses a serious security challenge to the Australia and globally as it prevalence has
increased over a decade although less attacks occur in the Western nations. The purpose of this
assignment is to examine what trends and terrorist tactics are evident internationally over the past 5
years and how Australia responded to these trends.
Definition
To have an understanding of the trends in international terrorism, it is essential to have an
understanding of the meaning of the term terrorism. There are hundreds of proposed definitions of
terrorism and researchers, experts, security professionals, NGOs, etc have adopted their own
definition.
In covering the trends and responses, the assignment also examines the debate over a definition of
terrorism that distinguishes acts of terrorism from criminal acts. One of the definitions that the
international communities had agreed when violence is used for political objectives is as follows;
Terrorism is the deliberate use of violence aimed against civilians in order to achieve political goals
(nationalistic, socioeconomic, ideological, religious, etc.) . It is important to note that this framework
is not for regular criminal activity, which warrants the application of criminal legal norms (Boaz
Ganor, pp 11 42, 27 May 2009).

Graffiti Is A Beautiful Crime Linda Ngo Summary
A Rhetorical Reading Response: Graffiti is a Beautiful Crime Linda Ngo, author of the opinion piece
Graffiti is a Beautiful Crime (2017), argues that graffiti should be legalized on grounds that it is an
artistic expression of free speech. Ngo uses many comparisons between graffiti, which she claims is
harmless, to many legal activities that cause people harm. Her purpose in writing this paper is to
establish a legal form of graffiti to protect graffiti artists from legal action. Ngo s target audience for
this paper is peers who may have different views on graffiti and its purpose. This paper contained
many flawed arguments that frustrated me. The question How could beautiful quotes and images
destroy boring plain walls? (Ngo 198) has a simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the person wants the graffiti on their building, it is not vandalism and is already legal. Ngo also
compares alcohol and tobacco use to graffiti. This is a weak argument because a person chooses to
consume the substances and suffer their own personal consequences. A graffiti artist chooses another
person s property and inflicts damage to it. Freedom of speech is a protected right we have as
Americans, but it does not and should not extend to protect vandalism. Linda Ngo creates her
arguments primarily from two methods. Her first two arguments are made in the form of syllogism.
For example, Ngo states Freedom of speech and expression is a natural right that we assimilated when
we were born (196), and This right gives people the opportunity to speak their mind whether it s
directly using your mouth or using indirect methods through poetry, music, and visual arts (196).
Since graffiti would be a visual art, the argument is; if freedom of speech legally protects art, and
graffiti is art, then graffiti should be legally protected. Another example of this is when she defines
vandalism as Action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to

We were the metal, Ericson stadium the magnet. With the burning heat reaching down to scold our

Vigorously focused on reaching the front I passionately fought my way through undeserving listeners,
to then enjoy their slow mind exploring sounds, I slipd into a hypnotic state of mind swaying to the
movement of the trancing beat as pulsating vibrations penetrate my whole body from limb to limb to
the end. I tried to battle my way through brick walls of people in pursuit of my now lost friends my
fight was soon restricted to a slow stumble, step by step, inch by inch, while breathing sweat infested
air I viewed humanity on display up close in all its glory in all its disgrace.
The search for one friend brought the discovery of another from Napier, it was like finding a pin when
looking for a needle in a haystack. I attempted to describe the indescribable experience I had endured
at the HDU set, I then realised I am suffering from temporary hearing loss as they begin screaming
down my ears, and still I heard nothing. The day progressed I felt weak and weary, so tired my next
step could have provoked leap oracy, vertigo consumed me. I sought the remedy of food and water to
energise my lethargic body and brain dead mind by tailing a queue that stretched as long as Pinocios

Okinawa Research Paper
Japan is an archipelago, or cluster of islands, that has four main islands: Honshu, Shikoku, Hokkaido,
and Kyushu. Bodies of water surround the four islands and one of the major terrain features is the vast
amount of mountains throughout the land. The Ryukyu Islands lie southwest of the Shikoku Island.
Okinawa is the largest island within that area. In Okinawa, the summers are hot, oppressive, wet and
overcast; the winters are cool and mostly clear; and it is windy year round (Weatherspark). The
average temperature fluctuates from the mid 50s to high 80s. Okinawa s wettest part of the season
lasts roughly 3 months ranging from March to June. With the island being near the water, you can
expect wind throughout the calendar year. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On 1 April 1945, allied forces invaded the island of Okinawa and engaged the Japanese. The Battle of
Okinawa took place during World War II and was one of the bloodiest battles. During the end of
World War II, Japan s economy was shattered and the United States captured the island of Okinawa.
Roughly, 40% of the industrial plants and infrastructure were demolished. Japan opened themselves to
Western ideas and influence and experienced economic changes. The national goal was to make
themselves powerful and prosperous so their independence would never be threatened by another
country again. Japan made a new start toward economic reconstruction and since has gained a

Conflict And What s Dispute
What s Conflict and What s Dispute?
Often time conflict and dispute are terms that are often confused in the field of conflict and resolution.
Yes, many scholars argue that conflict and dispute are terms or concepts that may seem to have similar
meanings but in reality they are much different and frequently misinterpreted very confusingly. Before
we evaluate what is conflict and what is dispute, let s explore key factors that determine what makes it
a conflict and what makes it a dispute.
According to Spangler and Burgess (2012), Conflict and dispute distinction made by John Burton
which distinguishes the two based on time and issues in contention. Disputes, Burton suggests, are
short term disagreements that are relatively easy to resolve. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Spangler and Burgess (2012), Costintino and Merchant (1996) defines conflict as the
fundamental disagreement between two parties, of which a dispute is one possible outcome (p. 4 5)
and Yam (1999) observation that conflict is a state, rather than a process. In this sense, a conflict can
exist without a dispute, but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (p. 115) . To simply sum it up,
Costintino, Merchant and Yam expressed, a conflict is when individuals who have opposite views on
issues, ideas, concepts, desires and values that are in a disagreeable manner (state of conflict) which
the underlying issue or problem have not been addressed in a civil manner or process such as in the
method of a dispute or a disputing process. Better yet, a conflict between individuals who totally
disagree with each other on their ideas or values, thinks that their point on the matter is correct/proper
and very important to them and yet the real issues have not been addressed in a neutral setting without
all the yelling, shouting and talking over one another. Once again, a prime example, the Hatfields and
the McCoys feuded. It was stated that the initial feud started over the ownership of hog, which was not
true, the underlying issue was Asa McCoy who returned from war was killed by a group of ex
Confederate soldiers whom they thought a Hatfield and a cousin committed his murder in

Quito Tectonics
Ecuador s large number of earthquakes is due to their location relative to other countries. In general,
the grinding of tectonic plates happens constantly (one beneath the other) and sometimes they get
stuck but keep moving. This causes the buildup of tension. When the plates finally break free, it
results in an earthquake.
One example is the location of Ecuador s capital, Quito. Quito lies on a fault line. When these fault
lines are displaced it is similar to a domino effect and can create breaks in other parts of the tectonic
plates. Tectonic plates are gigantic, irregular in size and shape, chunks of rock that lie beneath earth s
surface. The movement of these plates and the buildup over time results in the earthquakes we hear
about. Also,

Battle Of Vimy Ridge Research Paper
Pre 1950
The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place in April 1917. This battle was the most intricately planned
operation on the Western front by the Allied troops during World War One. It was led by Canadian
General, Sir Arthur Currie, and was the first time all four Canadian Corps fought together in the war. It
was also the first time Canadian troops, led by a Canadian, shared a total Canadian victory. This battle
was a defining event for Canada, as it was a major step in achieving full independence from the
British. It was important for the growth of Canadian nationalism and pride.
Alberta s Famous Five were a group of accomplished Canadian women involved in the Persons Case
of 1927. At the time, The Constitution stated what requirements had to be met for a person to be
delegated into the Canadian Senate, and other government jobs. For years, it had been a given that by
a person they meant a man. The five women challenged Parliament and asked them whether or not
women were seen as persons. When the case went to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1928, it was
ruled that the Constitution meant persons as in men. However, when the British Privy Council heard
of this decision, they vetoed it, and so ruled that women were indeed persons and eligible to be
appointed to the Senate. In Canada, this was an important step forward for the women s rights
movement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Canada greatly, as businesses closed and unemployment rates went up. Prairie farmers were hit the

Introduction Approximately 20 million Americans are diagnosed with some form of thyroid disorder
with up to 60 percent unaware of acquiring such conditions. Thyroid disorder if uncontrolled may lead
to serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, infertility, and possibly
death if severe. (1) The thyroid gland, a butterfly shaped organ, located in the middle of the lower
neck synthesizes and releases thyroid hormones. These vital hormones affect multiple body functions
such as the brain development, nervous system functions, metabolism, cardiac system functions, body
temperature, cholesterol levels and menstrual cycles. Not only is the thyroid gland one of the largest
organs of the endocrine system, the gland is the only organ in the human body that absorbs iodine
necessary to produce the thyroid hormones. The most common issues with the thyroid gland are when
the gland is overactive, hyperthyroidism and underactive, hypothyroidism. ( 1, 2 )

Analysis Of The Cat In The Hat
The Cat in the Hat is a picture book, written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name
Doctor Seuss. The book was published in 1957 and follows the actions of an eccentric
anthropomorphic cat who wears a red and white striped hat, colloquially named The Cat in the Hat.
When the cat invades the house of two children, Sally and Conrad, while their mum is out, he is
extremely destructive and, much to the children s despair, everything spirals out of control. At their
mum s arrival in the driveway, the children eventually convince the cat to leave but are then left with
the mammoth task of cleaning the house. Everything seems lost until the cat returns to clean the house
after a dramatic change of heart. The struggle between order and chaos is the most predominant theme
in this text, presented through the cat s conflict with the children. Order and chaos is also paramount
in another picture book of similar style, written much later by Seuss in 1971, The Lorax. A similar
conflict is presented between the protagonist and antagonist, the Lorax and the Once ler. When the
Once ler discovers a peculiar forest filled with wondrous Truffula Trees, he begins to ravage the trees
to produce sweater like objects called thneeds, much to the dismay of the Lorax. The texts incorporate
a range of techniques to present the struggle between the voices of order and chaos, in the protagonist
against the antagonist. Characterisation, setting, narrative structure, stylistic devices and narrative
voice are used by Doctor Seuss in similar and contrasting ways to demonstrate the same theme of
order and chaos in the books, and despite having the same author, different contexts, based on the time
period when the books were written, introduce alternative perspectives.
Written with similar purpose and by the same author, both The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax have a
target audience of young children and employ relevant language and stylistic devices that allow the
key theme of order and chaos to be portrayed to the younger audience. The most significant
techniques used by Seuss in both The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax are rhythm and repetition, which
emphasise the characters emotions. Thus, the younger audience can more easily

  • 2. The Merits And Merits Of Media Coverage Of Terrorism Essay Q. Using any case/s of your choice, discuss the merits and de merits of media coverage of terrorism. Introduction: From the outset, the paper makes clarity of the key terms terrorism and media coverage. According to Magstadt (2009:506) terrorism has been defined in many ways, but the most definitions take into account several factors including violence s, the desire for publicity, political motive and intimidation aimed at the civilian populations. Jerkins (n.d.) terrorism is the use or threatened use of force designed to bring about political change . As depicted from the above definitions activities of terrorism have gone through premeditation stage, implementation and more to be fulfilled. In 1983 the world woke up to the breaking news that terrorists bombed the United States Embassy in Beirut and killed 63 people. Other acts of terrorism followed and in 1995 the world was shocked to hear that members of the Aum Shinrikyo released deadly sarin gas in the Tokyo subway in five coordinated attacks killing 12 and severely injuring 50 and causing temporary vision problems for others and this is classified as domestic terrorism practiced within a single country by terrorists with no ties to another government. As if that was enough, in August 1998 a large car bomb explodes in the central district of Omagh, Northern Ireland killing 29 people and injuring 330. Dreadfully, four commercial jet airliners are hijacked from East Cost Airport, two were directed to crash into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Review Of Robert Mundell s Trilemma Essay Section I: Exchange Rates Paper Robert Mundell s Trilemma, also known as the Impossible Trinity, states that a nation cannot realize monetary policy autonomy, free capital movements, and exchange rate stability at the same time. While either of the two goals can combine and actualize in any given period, as a simultaneous and three fold effort, each objective cannot coexist. Together they are simply incompatible. Thus, and holding true to the tradeoff nature of economics, Mundell s undisputed theory illustrates that in order for a nation to attain its preferred monetary goals it must give up one desired option. Nevertheless, it is no easy decision. Before any resolution is made, nations must invest substantial time and energy into understanding the consequences at stake because the policies that they do deicide to implement are not only felt at a national or international level but personally amongst those that they govern. To exemplify the tradeoffs that define the Trilemma s policy combinations, consider a nation with a long history of high inflation and a central bank that has limited credibility. Bearing in mind that low inflation is a primary macroeconomic goal amongst world powers and likened to symbolize economic stability, would not the aim of the nation be to promote steady financial growth through deflation? And while the costs of inflation are substantially high on their own, when coupled with uncertainty produced by an unreliable central bank the costs are only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Reflection On Swimming Introduction At the beginning of the semester, the health behaviour change I started pursuing is to swim regularly. My goal of engage in this exercise is to acquire and grasp at least one swimming style by the end of this semester, and the outcome I expect to obtain from it is the improvement of physical fitness. Swimming is a strength consuming aerobic exercise that brings a variety benefits to one s physiological and psychological states. Scholarly research has indicated that swimming contributes to weight loss and acceleration of illness recovery (Yuan et al., 2016). Also, it can improve emotional state, physical mobility and functional capacity, all of which can lead to a better quality of life (Karapolat et al., 2009). Leg arm coordination and neural plasticity were both found to be correlated with long term swimming behaviour. For aerobic exercises in general, it enhances pulmonary functions and cognitive functions. Methods Dosage. After referring to my school and work schedule, I decided to swim at least two times a week. Since I was a novice of swimming, I registered a swimming lesson for beginners at Hart House fitness centre. The sessions took place every Monday and each took 50 minutes. My attendance of the lesson each week was counted towards the dosage, which means that apart from the lesson, I intend to swim by myself at least once a week to practice and strengthen what I had learned in the lesson. For each practice session, I aimed on swimming 40 to 50 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Prj: learning to surf Interview write up 2 2:55 friday afternoon, I took a deep breath as my stomach turned inside itself as if doing somersaults over and over. I sat there waiting for the interview call from Connor. Conor McMurdo, A highschool graduate now at Cal Poly, offered to to help me on my project. I had never met him before; however, he was recommended by my english teacher for doing his senior project on making his own surfboard. Interviewing someone you have never met is always a little nerve racking. My stomach felt these first time jitters as I picked up the phone to call Connor. Connor answered the phone with a friendly disposition and a few questions about me. I in turn thanked him for his help and his time and asked him how school was. Connor started surfing when he was 12. He started because it was a way to connect with his dad and to evade his stress of life. • 9. Trade Between Africa and Eurasia Changed During the Era of... Although key elements of the trade between Africa and Eurasia changed during the era of 300 1450, a few factors stayed the same. In 300 C.E., trade routes were primarily between Europe and North Africa. The way that they changed by the time of 1450 was that they expanded southward and westward. By 1450, these trade routes went through West Africa, sub Saharan Africa, and the Indian Ocean. One factor that stayed the same during this time period was that the northern coast of Africa was always involved in the trade between Africa and the rest of Eurasia. At the start of this period in 300 C.E, Afro Eurasian trade was not very sophisticated. There was some collaboration with cultures in the Mediterranean. European goods were brought to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This continued from the 800s to the 1300s. At this point of the time period, the Mongols had expanded throughout Eurasia. However, the only parts of the trade that were affected were the northern parts between Europe and Asia, because the Mongols concentrated on mostly China, Russia, and some parts of Eastern Europe. By the 1450s, the gold salt trade started to decline, and soon, the center of trade started to shift away from the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. This was because the age of exploration started in Europe, and trade concentrated more towards the Atlantic Ocean. Even though these aspects describe the ways that change occurred with trade between Afro Eurasia, one important part did stay the same. North Africa was consistent and always a key part of trade between the continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia. In 300, North Africa was the only area that traded with the Mediterranean. In the time of the gold salt trade, European venders and Islamic merchants arrived in North Africa. North African merchants still traded even when Europeans started to shift the balance of trade to the Americas starting from the mid 1400s. This is how trade systems between Africa and Europe stayed the same between the years 300 1450. The changes that took place regarding trade between 300 1450 impact other parts of history. I write this in strong support of the 2016 Pathfinder Award nomination for Isabella (Bella) Greene, a student at Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches. At the outset, let me state that Bella is an extraordinary student and it is truly a pleasure to write this letter about her. When Bella first contacted me in 2014 expressing her interest in working in my lab, I gladly accepted her. High School students in general are very busy with their studies, homework and extracurricular activities. From the beginning, she committed herself to a weekly average lab work schedule of 12 14 hours along with additional time on the weekends for the opportunity to learn new procedures. The kind of passion and commitment Bella exhibited is truly exceptional. My laboratory focuses on understanding the basic mechanisms of memory storage and aging associated cognitive dysfunction and we are actively trying to develop novel therapeutics for Alzheimer s disease. Bella is involved in a project that is aimed at elucidating the molecular underpinnings of the establishment and maintenance of excitatory and inhibitory synapses. The molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain elusive. Bella s goal is to determine whether a specific family of molecular motor proteins, kinesins, plays a critical role in this process. There are about 40 different kinesins and she wanted to identify a specific kinesin that is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of components of excitatory and ... • 12. Business Value Chain Analysis Of Diageo Diageo s code for business value creation does involve their tangible assets, however other organizations can easily buy them, so these are rarely the source of competitive advantage. The greatest tangible source that is not easily obtainable by other companies is their own resource to produce raw and unique materials to their own products. Diageo has competitors purchase materials from their owned and operated distilleries and land to make their own product. Intangible assets are difficult to measure and can t be touched or seen. These assets drive innovation and contribute to Diageo s success and competitive edge in the market place. Above, examining Diageo s unique mix of resources explores how Diageo develops certain resources necessary to support corporate strategy. As we have reviewed, Diageo has a purpose, vision, mission and objective, and has strategically implemented internal assets and has the capability and resources to deliver their strategy. Diageo is interested in growing their people and business as well as improving financial returns and shareholder value to avoid situations of competitive parity. These views emphasize asset valuation using accounting and economic measures over effectiveness measures and lack a holistic approach to understanding value as an internally driven strategic effort (Barney 2001; Hawawini et al 2000). • 13. Nothing Wrong With Child Labor In The United States Nothing Wrong With Child Labor Imagine sending your son or daughter to work just to stay out of poverty or just to get by. This is what some brave parents have to do to their children. The Fundamental reason many families in developing nations send children to work is for plain survival. Wages earned by these children can mean the difference between passable subsistence or being absolutely miserable. Although sending children way before the age of 15 16 may seem terrible looking at what children are working with dangerous tools, it s a way to stay out of poverty, and to continue on with life. Although sending children to work young may seem bad, but being in a poor situation just a little more money can help a family a lot. According to Douglas Clement, families in developing nations send their children to daily jobs, despite the hardships they ll endure. he has a positive analysis on working as a child, has benefits to families in developing nations. This proves child labor isn t, all that bad and helps out in developing nations children that really need funds. Schubert s music is well known for its melody and harmony. Although he was a fantastic composer, his music did not become as recognized until he had already passed. His vocal contributions were written for both male and female voices, as well as mixed voices. Schubert is considered to be a Romantic composer for many reasons, some being were that he combined Romantic poetry and music, and that he was extremely emotional which led to his melodies and feelings. Schubert s life and personality also were a huge impact that made him fit into the Romantic stereotype. He came from a poor family and lived a miserable life. Throughout his life, he was always known to be a loner which help him be the creative person he always was. Schubert died very young at the age of 31 and was very sick; Syphillis. Robert and Clara Schumann were a couple that were in love. Their story is full of music, love, and marriage. Before marriage, they went through a difficult time of parental disapproval and gossip. • 15. A Traditional Indian Culture And American Culture Identity and Names The names we are given are essential in forming our identity. It is the way we are addressed by everyone starting from birth. It is the beginning of how we define ourselves in our own terms `as a result of growing up and experiencing life. In Indian culture, from The Namesake, the grandmother chooses a good name for the child before they are born. Gogol was supposed to be a pet name only used by family and close friends. For Gogol, his name highlights his differences to everyone else, but more importantly, himself. He endures a consistent struggle with his two cultures throughout the novel. He, as a young adult, is searching for acceptance of both his traditional Indian culture and American culture. The Namesake, explores the theme of identity by examining the differences of both cultures. He has two names and therefore two identities, Gogol and Nikhil, and throughout the novel he looks for a way to incorporate them into one whole. Naming a child following Bengali tradition is extremely different in comparison to American culture. This highlights the importance of a child finding their own way in their own time, but also allows the parents to choose the best name. When it comes to naming the child, that honor is given to an elder relative. There are always two names that a Bengali child will have: a pet name and a good name. Appropriation is the most frequently used word whenever a body of work comes into question. Exploring deeper into this phrase used to justifying stealing, may sound simple on the surface, but appropriation has been a hot topic for many legal battles that can favor either side. Photographers and other artist are constantly in and out of court, fighting that their works is being infringed, while others argue originality. What guideline is there to protect someone from their being considered stolen? Exploring the laws behind appropriation and plagiarism, as well some photographer that fought on both sides may give a better idea of on how one can protect them. The first step to understanding the controversy appropriation is to know the definition, The MOCA in Los Angeles states, To appropriate is to borrow. Appropriation is the practice of creating a new work by taking a pre existing image from another context art history, advertising, the media and combining that appropriated image with new ones. Or, a well known artwork by someone else may be represented as the appropriator s own. Such borrowings can be regarded as the two dimensional equivalent of the found object. But instead of, say, incorporating that found image into a new collage, the postmodern appropriator redraws, repaints, or rephotographs it. This definition in itself can leave ... [unused38]on s Moral Sense, By Hutcheson And Shaftesbury Hutcheson and Shaftesbury believed that human nature contained all it needed to make moral decisions, along with inclinations to be moral. Moral sense is a kind of sense because, like external senses, it is common to all mankind. It is independent of our will and its deliverances are not conclusions mediated by premises. In particular it is not mediated by considerations of personal advantage or harm. It is on account of this feature that we are able to admire actions that took place in remote times and regions and even actions that are contrary to our own interests . Moral philosophers say that the main contribution of Hutcheson to the concept of moral sense is that he describes the working of moral sense. The process, Hutcheson described, ... Hutcheson puts it this way: Approbation of our own action denotes, or is attended with, a pleasure in the contemplation of it, and in reflection upon the affections which inclined us to it . Consider what happens when someone picks up and returns something that another person drops. In response to the action, the person who picked up the dropped item would have feelings of approbation toward his own action. This person would be happy with what he did, especially after giving it some thought. Further, they would be pleased if their own intentions were ones with which they could also be pleased. The intention could possibly be that they just wanted to help this person; however, if the intention was to gain advantage with the other person, then they would not be as pleased with themselves. Approbation of another s action is much the same except that the observer is pleased to witness the action of the other person and feels affection toward the agent of the action. Again Hutcheson writes: Approbation of the action of another has some little pleasure in attending it in the observer, and raises love toward the agent, in whom the quality approved is deemed to reside, and not in the observer, who has ... In the novel Jane Eyre (1847), Charlotte Bronte creates a character that symbolizes a Byronic Hero. Nevertheless, Mr. Rochester is considered a Byronic Hero due to certain characteristics he has, however, this is only to an extent, as he lacks some qualities of a Byronic Hero. He is central to the theme of Jane Eyre because he, like many others in in the novel, are searching for a place to belong and find self identity. Throughout the novel, it is asserted that Mr. Rochester owns the characteristics of Isolation/Wander and Rejects Social Norms that a Byronic Hero holds. Mr. Rochester is isolated from society and exiled by the upper class but only partially, due to his large sum of wealth. Although Rochester did not exile himself by choice, he is considered peculiar by the other prosperous townsfolk for rejecting social norms which causes him to be isolated. Bronte states this cause and effect chain through one of her quotes in the novel, Come Jane come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rochester is an important character because he is lost and can not find himself or his place in the world. He is portrayed as a Byronic Hero with his character qualities even with the lack of a few. He is considered a Byronic Hero for his unconventional way of living that rejects social norms and causes everyone to isolate him and cause him to wander, leaving him moody and temperamental which also causes him to be rebellious and commit unnamed sexual crimes throughout the novel. Although Rochester does lack the quality of superior intellect, the abundance of the other qualities make it so that he is indeed considered a Byronic Hero. All these qualities of a Byronic Hero are somehow connected and Charlotte Bronte does an incredible job with the cause and effect as well as a normal cycle of the different behaviors to make Rochester a Byronic ... How have these trends impacted on the ways in which counter terrorism has responded in the Australian context? Introduction Terrorism poses a serious security challenge to the Australia and globally as it prevalence has increased over a decade although less attacks occur in the Western nations. The purpose of this assignment is to examine what trends and terrorist tactics are evident internationally over the past 5 years and how Australia responded to these trends. Definition To have an understanding of the trends in international terrorism, it is essential to have an understanding of the meaning of the term terrorism. There are hundreds of proposed definitions of terrorism and researchers, experts, security professionals, NGOs, etc have adopted their own definition. In covering the trends and responses, the assignment also examines the debate over a definition of terrorism that distinguishes acts of terrorism from criminal acts. One of the definitions that the international communities had agreed when violence is used for political objectives is as follows; Terrorism is the deliberate use of violence aimed against civilians in order to achieve political goals (nationalistic, socioeconomic, ideological, religious, etc.) . It is important to note that this framework is not for regular criminal activity, which warrants the application of criminal legal norms (Boaz Ganor, pp 11 42, 27 May 2009). ... Graffiti Is A Beautiful Crime Linda Ngo Summary A Rhetorical Reading Response: Graffiti is a Beautiful Crime Linda Ngo, author of the opinion piece Graffiti is a Beautiful Crime (2017), argues that graffiti should be legalized on grounds that it is an artistic expression of free speech. Ngo uses many comparisons between graffiti, which she claims is harmless, to many legal activities that cause people harm. Her purpose in writing this paper is to establish a legal form of graffiti to protect graffiti artists from legal action. Ngo s target audience for this paper is peers who may have different views on graffiti and its purpose. This paper contained many flawed arguments that frustrated me. The question How could beautiful quotes and images destroy boring plain walls? (Ngo 198) has a simple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the person wants the graffiti on their building, it is not vandalism and is already legal. Ngo also compares alcohol and tobacco use to graffiti. This is a weak argument because a person chooses to consume the substances and suffer their own personal consequences. A graffiti artist chooses another person s property and inflicts damage to it. Freedom of speech is a protected right we have as Americans, but it does not and should not extend to protect vandalism. Linda Ngo creates her arguments primarily from two methods. Her first two arguments are made in the form of syllogism. For example, Ngo states Freedom of speech and expression is a natural right that we assimilated when we were born (196), and This right gives people the opportunity to speak their mind whether it s directly using your mouth or using indirect methods through poetry, music, and visual arts (196). Since graffiti would be a visual art, the argument is; if freedom of speech legally protects art, and graffiti is art, then graffiti should be legally protected. Another example of this is when she defines vandalism as Action involving deliberate destruction of or damage to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this sense, a conflict can exist without a dispute, but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (p. 115) . In general, the grinding of tectonic plates happens constantly (one beneath the other) and sometimes they get stuck but keep moving. This causes the buildup of tension. When the plates finally break free, it results in an earthquake. One example is the location of Ecuador s capital, Quito. Quito lies on a fault line. When these fault lines are displaced it is similar to a domino effect and can create breaks in other parts of the tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are gigantic, irregular in size and shape, chunks of rock that lie beneath earth s surface. This battle was the most intricately planned operation on the Western front by the Allied troops during World War One. It was led by Canadian General, Sir Arthur Currie, and was the first time all four Canadian Corps fought together in the war. It was also the first time Canadian troops, led by a Canadian, shared a total Canadian victory. This battle was a defining event for Canada, as it was a major step in achieving full independence from the British. It was important for the growth of Canadian nationalism and pride. Alberta s Famous Five were a group of accomplished Canadian women involved in the Persons Case of 1927. At the time, The Constitution stated what requirements had to be met for a person to be delegated into the Canadian Senate, and other government jobs. For years, it had been a given that by a person they meant a man. The five women challenged Parliament and asked them whether or not women were seen as persons. When the case went to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1928, it was ruled that the Constitution meant persons as in men. However, when the British Privy Council heard of this decision, they vetoed it, and so ruled that women were indeed persons and eligible to be appointed to the Senate. • 48. Analysis Of The Cat In The Hat The Cat in the Hat is a picture book, written and illustrated by Theodor Geisel under the pen name Doctor Seuss. The book was published in 1957 and follows the actions of an eccentric anthropomorphic cat who wears a red and white striped hat, colloquially named The Cat in the Hat. When the cat invades the house of two children, Sally and Conrad, while their mum is out, he is extremely destructive and, much to the children s despair, everything spirals out of control. At their mum s arrival in the driveway, the children eventually convince the cat to leave but are then left with the mammoth task of cleaning the house. Everything seems lost until the cat returns to clean the house after a dramatic change of heart. The struggle between order and chaos is the most predominant theme in this text, presented through the cat s conflict with the children. Order and chaos is also paramount in another picture book of similar style, written much later by Seuss in 1971, The Lorax. A similar conflict is presented between the protagonist and antagonist, the Lorax and the Once ler. When the Once ler discovers a peculiar forest filled with wondrous Truffula Trees, he begins to ravage the trees to produce sweater like objects called thneeds, much to the dismay of the Lorax. The texts incorporate a range of techniques to present the struggle between the voices of order and chaos, in the protagonist against the antagonist. Characterisation, setting, narrative structure, stylistic devices and narrative voice are used by Doctor Seuss in similar and contrasting ways to demonstrate the same theme of order and chaos in the books, and despite having the same author, different contexts, based on the time period when the books were written, introduce alternative perspectives. Written with similar purpose and by the same author, both The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax have a target audience of young children and employ relevant language and stylistic devices that allow the key theme of order and chaos to be portrayed to the younger audience. The most significant techniques used by Seuss in both The Cat in the Hat and The Lorax are rhythm and repetition, which emphasise the characters emotions. Thus, the younger audience can more easily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
