Pros Of Vaccines
Vaccines are a revolutionary form of technology that save lives, lessen child mortality rates, and
strengthen child immunity. Vaccination technology has become sophisticated since the knowhow
of inoculation was first presented. Death resulting diseases are nearly eradicated in first world
countries. Herd immunity is a bonus to the aftermath of immunization, offering another level of
protection against disease. Though the potential side effects of vaccines cause concern for some,
the benefits of this medication knowledge outweigh the rare potential dangers. Vaccinations are a
key development towards survival and the eradication of fatal disease.
The first form of vaccines began in the 1100s through a process known as inoculation. This process

Lisa Estall expressed her uncertainty and concerns about vaccinating her year old daughter.
Every where I go, someone s talking about the danger of vaccines, ... I can t help but wonder:
Should I really be injecting a healthy child with these things? (Vaccines: The Reality Behind the
Debate). As all new parents will eventually go through, whether to vaccinate their children or not
is a valid concern created from uncertainty of the pros and cons of immunization. The chemicals
used in vaccines are harmless with a low dosage of active ingredients. It is unlikely for individuals
to get seriously sick following a vaccination. Though an allergic reaction may occur, the
probability of a serious negative reaction is approximately 1/2,000,000 doses of vaccine (Vaccine
ingredients). Another concern is the misconception that vaccines are a direct cause for cognitive
disabilities such as autism. Autism is considered to be a mental condition that becomes present in
early childhood and may make it harder for the individual to communicate or connect with other
people. Symptoms of autism becomes most obvious between 2 and 3 years of age, however can
sometimes be diagnosed as early as 18 months. (What Is Autism? ) The hype that certain vaccines
will result in the child developing autism due to a chemical known as thimerosal is the subject of
outdated information. This specific chemical is no longer in use and therefore vaccines pose no
genuine risk to the mental capacity of children. As well, studies have been conducted in Denmark,
US and Canada between 1991 1998 determining that vaccination does not have a direct relationship
with the development of autism (Autism). Herd immunity is a beneficial side effect of
immunization. When a critical portion of a community is immunized against a contagious disease,
most members of the community are protected against that disease

An Argument In Shakespeare s Work
Therefore, Edward De Vere is a strong contender s an alternative writer to Shakespearean work.
Although Earl De Vere is the most likely candidate to have authored Shakespeare s work, there
are other alternative possibilities such as Francis Bacon and a group of individual writers.
Francis Bacon was a famous philosopher of this time period, who kept company and traveled
with other well educated aristocrats. (bbcamerica.com) Bacon s travels as well as his social rank
make him a notable contender as an alternate writer of Shakespearean plays. As a leading figure of
the English Renaissance, he certainly had the biography for it: educated at Cambridge, widely
traveled, Bacon was a famous philosopher, one of the inventors of the scientific method, ... Show

These believers cite important counter arguments supporting William Shakespeareas the true author.
For instance, No Elizabethan documents support the claim that Shakespeare s plays and poems
were written by someone else, or that the actor Shakespeare was not the author Shakespeare.
(shakespeare online.com) Clearly, the evidence doubting Shakespeare s authorship has no clear
backing emanating from the Elizabethan period when Shakespeare was alive rather it was a theory
started well after Shakespeare s passing. A more specific counter argument concentrates on the
number one alternate to William Shakespeare Edward De Vere17th Earl of Oxford. In examining,
the historical data, the dates do not support the theory that the Earl of Oxford wrote all of
Shakespeare s work. Oxford died in 1604, and significant evidence indicates that some of
Shakespeare s work was produced years later. (For instance, The Tempest was influenced by a
voyage to the Americas that did not occur until 1610). (news.psu.edu). This is convincing evidence
that the Earl of Oxford did not write all of Shakespeare since the Earl of Oxford s death predates
many references seen in Shakespearean

Socrates Vs Cepachus
Socrates is invited into Polemarchus home, he begins to engage in a conversation with Cephalus
where they eventually discuss the meaning of justice using Socratic dialectic. A Socratic dialectic is
a cooperative discussion where common opinions, that most people will say when asked, are
exchanged through socialization. To showcase Socratic dialecticin the conversation, Cephalus
answers Socratesquestion and states his own view of what is justicewhich is to follow the law,
which is divine, and to tell the truth. Socrates begins to engage Cephalus stance on justice which
leads to the deduction behind his viewpoint. Cephalus reasoning for this definition hails from his

Socrates and Thrasymachus discuss examples of such proficient individuals such as a doctor or
a pilot and their roles such as the doctor who is sought by those who require medical care or the
pilot who is commander of the sailors, Thrasymachus citing these examples as proof of his
claims. Socrates uses Thrasymachus examples to counter his argument by claiming it is the
exact opposite by stating how the doctor is the one who is dependent on the sick for his art, and
if there were no sick people, he would be useless and thus powerless. The pilot depends upon his
men to accept his authority and follow his commands, for if they so desired, they could easily
mutiny and overthrow him. This can be applied to the rulers of a nation, as they may also not
know if the laws they are implementing can be good or not, which also carries the risk of losing
the support of the masses. Socrates makes the case that without all these people to rule, the doctor,
pilot, and ruler would all find themselves without power for it comes from the ruled, after which
the discussion turns to these positions being self centered such as the doctor being a wage earner
and not concerned over their distribution of

Dr. Bernard, Canada s Nine Non Partisan Senators
Introduction In October 2016, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Nova Scotia s Wanda
Thomas Bernard as one of Canada s nine non partisan senators (Williams, 2016). According to
Semansky (2016), Dr. Bernard, who serves as the university s special advisor, diversity and
inclusiveness, [is] the first African Nova Scotian woman to serve in the Senate Chamber (para. 2).
In response to the news, Bernard has stated that equity for all is [her] primary goal in life. To be
able to enter the Senate with that perspective and contribute to the country is an incredible
privilege, one that [she] knows [she] will be accountable for (Semansky, 2016, para. 7). While
Trudeau has named diversity as a priority within the Canadian Parliament,... Show more content on

In this section, I will briefly discuss the effects of Trudeau s Senate reforms and argue that reform is
better than abolishment. Trudeau s three phased Senate reforms give minority group leaders an
opportunity to represent their communities. The reforms attempt to shift the focus from gaining
support for the Liberal party, to a collection of different and diverse minds within the Senate. The
first phase of the reforms focused on the [removal of] all senators from the national Liberal caucus ,
which inherently suggested that senators [no longer] have formal or organic ties with the Liberal
caucus, nor do they have any organizational, financial or other formal responsibilities within the
Liberal Party (Dion, 2015, para. 5). Going from there, the [creation of] a new, nonpartisan, merit
based, broad and diverse process to advise the prime minister on Senate appointments was the
second item on the agenda (Dion, 2015, para. 6). Finally, the third phase targeted the inclusion of
marginalized groups, such as women and minorities, in the Senate (Dion, 2015). Therefore, Trudeau
s appointments are changing the direction of the Senate to include historically oppressed minorities
and their representatives. That being stated, one particular argument that has been raised in
opposition to Senate reforms is that the upper house is no longer relevant and should be abolished
(Maclean s, 2013). The website suggests that

The Management Of Mental Health Disorders
Psychiatry and psychology work together in treating and diagnosing mental disorders. Mental
illness include abnormalities in the emotional, mental, and behavioral areas of an individual s life.
Mental disorders are diagnosed by the outlined criteria, in approved diagnostic manuals. The
management of mental healthdisorders involves a combination therapy of drugs and psychotherapy
such as electroconvulsive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy as well as others, depending on the
disease. The treatment can be outpatient or inpatient depending on the disease severity. Some
patients or their family may question the effect of the treatment they receive, like medicine, because
of the constant change of therapy plans and modifications in prescription. Although some
treatments have been questioned on their effectiveness, psychotherapy has a positive outcome in
patients.
There is much thought around psychiatry with people questioning the efficiency of the psychiatric
treatment and others arguing that mental disorders do not exist. Individuals with anti psychiatric
views claim that the treatments that are used for mental illnesses are ineffective, unsafe,
unnecessary, and are not any helpful to the patients. Questions have arisen that psychiatry hand out
medicine freely and that certain measures used in the treatment of mental illnesses like lobotomy,
an operation that disconnects connections in the front of the brain, and electro convulsion that send
electric currents to create

The B 17
On July 28, 1935, the first porotype of the B 17 or also known as the B 299 took off from Boeing
Field in south Seattle on its first ever test flight (Boeing B 17 ). Seattle Times reporter Richard
Smith dubbed the new plane, with its many .30 caliber machine guns, the Flying Fortress, (qtd.in
Boeing). A name that Boeingquickly adopted and trademarked for the gigantic bomber (Boeing B

response to the Army s request for a large, multi engine bomber. The B 17 financed entirely by
Boeing, went from the design board to flight tests in less than a year. In Boeings description of the

Goodnight And Good Luck And The Crucible Comparison
The Crucible and Goodnight and Good Luck are currently relevant due to recent news articles and
television programs that show communism in society today. There are many citizens who undergo
social and political segregation due to differences in culture, political views, ethnicity, etc. In
Goodnight and Good Luck, people would get fired and denied acceptance in society; They were
accused of having a tie with communism, similar to today s society. The reason for communism
existing today, is based upon genderidentity, disability, and race.
To begin, in today s society people are shunned or denied jobs based solely on how they prefer to
be identified as. Different countries have stereotypical qualities; thus, leaving them no option but to
flee their country and come to America. For instance, Many who have fled to the US seeking
protection from torture, sexual violence, and other forms of persecution in their home countries
related to their gender identity or gender expression. This is relevant to The Crucible and today s
society, because women and men are fleeing from America to seek protection from gender identity
discrimination. Like in the movie Goodnight and Good Luck people were leaving the country or
committing suicide to escape their reputation of being a communist. Like in today s society people
are fleeing the country and committing suicide because of rejection. Like in The Crucible they
would get denied if they had any ties with witchcraft or the ... Show more content on

The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Essay
The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In her feminist critique of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Anne Millard Daughtey described Buffy as
a show which obviously promotes female strength and power (159). Buffy herself is a symbol of
female empowerment (149); as feminists we can all take comfort in the fact that Buffy kicks butt
and so can we all (164). Sherryl Vint agrees that Buffy is a positive role model for young women,
one which feminism should celebrate (para. 3). I find this understanding of Buffy, both the
character and the series, to be very problematic, and with this paper I aim to undertake a revised
feminist critique of the show, and expose the Buffyverse as the product of a very traditional
patriarchal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before Buffy and her friends discover this, Dawn has a number of unnerving experiences, in which
people walk up to her staring, saying There s nothing there, you re not real, there s nothing there .
Truly, in the Buffyverse, there is no such thing as woman .
Prior to embarking upon my own analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it this pertinent to consider
Joss Whedon s envisioning of his series, and in particular, his heroine, Buffy. In interviews he has
often explained his desire to create an alternative ending for the horror movie:
It was pretty much the blond girl in the alley in the horror movie who keeps getting killed ... I felt
bad for her, but she was always much more interesting to me than the other women. She was fun,
she had sex, she was vivacious. But then she would get punished for it. Literally, I just had that
image, that scene, in my mind, like the trailer for a movie what if the girl goes into that dark alley.
And the monster follows her. And she destroys him. (Quoted in Vint, para. 6)
Whilst we see here that Whedon s intention is to subvert the conventional horror movie/slasher
genre, I m not sure that he is successful. He is running the considerable risk of merely replacing
the fetishised female victim with a fetishised female hero; she is still a pretty blond girl, she is
still fun, she is still sexual, she is still Barbie with

American Indian Reservations
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 26.6 % of single race American Indians and Alaska
Natives were living in poverty in 2015, the highest rate of any race group (American Indians By
The Number). This statistic is even more surprising when informed the Indian Reservations are
managed by the Federal Government. The Indian Removal Act, Federal Trust Doctrine and
Reservation Period played a major role in current Native American economics. These historical
policies were designed over 200 years ago to prevent Native American prosperity and they need to
be eliminated.
The Indian Removal Act was the legislation that opened the door for current economic struggle of
the Native American communities. President Andrew Jackson signed the policy... Show more

The Indian Appropriations Act of 1851 authorized the establishment of legally recognized
reservations in the United States (Indian Reservations). The land which makes up the reservations
are owned by the United States Government. This allows the Government to mediate and dictate
everyday life of the Native Americans.
Chief Justice John Marshall established the foundation of laws pertaining to the Native Americans
in 1831, through the Federal Trustee Doctrine. The Supreme Court verified the Federal
Government was the trustee of Native American affairs, instead of the State. Most of the policies
made, pertaining to Native Americans, were created from the seed of this policy. This type of
verbiage and ideology is why the Government is to blame for the current economic struggle on
reservations.
The information previously stated gives credence in which the U.S. Government is fully
responsible for the prevention of Native American prosperity. The Native Americans are restricted
from utilizing the land for agriculture and energy resources. It was designed this way, from
policies created in our history, to hinder prosperity and make a once great society reliant on its
conquer. If the land dedicated to reservations were to be relinquished and managed by the tribes,
then reservation economics would be able to flourish. It s time to exterminate these ancient policies
and give the Native Americans their life

The Importance Of Education
Why do students continue to enter a college education system that is no longer focusing on them?
The education system was built to serve the interest of the public, to provide opportunities for
people to further their education and move up or maintain their social classes, and to teach people
to think for themselves. All of the authors Menand, Roth, and Couturier all agree that educationis
threatened by the fact that colleges are focusing more on their private affairs instead of the students.
They believe collegeshould be focused on the student and their ability to think on their own and
enhance their capabilities (Roth 2). Rose Hulman does this well by challenging their students with
a hard curriculum, but at the same time they are willing to give them plenty of opportunities to find
success with smaller class sizes and a student friendly environment.
Michael Roth believes that people aremore than just human capital for society; he thinks that
everyone should be able to find significance in their lives and work (3). In his essay Learning as
Freedom, by he discusses why education should be more than just learning how to do a skill;
John Dewey said, it should be about enhancing our capabilities (2). He describes how everyone
has their role is society and that not everyone can be a leader, but Roth quotes Dewey saying, the
great thing for one as for the other is that each shall have had the education which enables him to
see within his daily work all there is in it

Beloved
Slavery has been a vital part of America s history since it began in 1619. Such history must be
preserved in order to understand its ongoing influence in issues today, but thousands of stories of
those enslaved have been lost or forgotten in time. Toni Morrison expresses why the narrative of
slavery must be continued on by integrating the life of Margaret Garner into her novel Beloved. In
Beloved, Toni Morrisonintertwines fiction with the story of Margaret Garner in order pass it on and
explore what might have been if the circumstances surrounding Garner had been different.
Margaret Garner and Sethe s murder of their children happened very similarly, but the reaction and
the aftermath differed. In 1856, Margaret Garner killed her youngest child, and went to trial as a
result. The case garnered nationwide attention and inspired sympathy for the abolitionist cause.
Despite the support, Garner struggles to process what she has done. She knows her child is dead,

According to Palmer and Brewer (2012), the superiority effect of sequential line ups might not
always present in real world settings. Wells et al. (1998) also suggest that the real world settings
could affect how witnesses respond to the line up, where experiments on line up procedure effects
rely on staged crimes and are assessed in a controlled environment. Similarly, Pozzulo et al. (2008)
suggest that the difference between simultaneous and sequential line ups regarding false
identification in target absent conditions could be decreased in realistic conditions. Nonetheless,
according to Lindsay et al. (1991) sequential line up presentation will still result in higher quality
evidence than simultaneous presentation. Furthermore, Palmer and Brewer suggest that it is

According to the words of Aristotle, a city state is viewed as a natural organization that is
comprised of a large sum of individuals who share a common goal but hold unique identities. He
mentioned the following, For a city is by nature a mass of people; as it becomes more and more
unified, first the citywill turn into a household, and then the household will turn into just one
person for we would say that a household is more unified than a city, and one person more unified
than a household. And so, even if someone were capable of completely unifying a city, he should

good ruling is done by those who are intelligent have learned the necessarily skills to rule a city

justice, but the make only limited progress and do not describe the whole of what is fully just.
Justice seems to be equality, for instance, and indeed it is but for equals, not for everyone. Again,

What furthered my love for this field was seeing how passionate people are about taking care of
others. As well as seeing how each person, whether it s a nursing aid or a doctor, creates a

cardiac system, as I want to become a cardiac doctor one day. The thing I liked least would be the
nurse drama and conflicts on the floor. This field has always been important to me and my family,

Co sleeping or crib sleepers that is the question for new parents. There are people that feel that co

The Issue Of Mainstream Media Bias Essay
The world is not responding to events in this country, but rather to the description of these events
by news organizations. The key to understanding the strange nature of the response is thus to be
found in the practice of journalism.... (Friedman, 2014) This article considers the concepts in
arguing that mainstream media bias exists. Exists and presents, in message and content, an
essentially biased product, in direct opposition of their industry standards declaration of
impartiality and neutrality. In an effort to establish meaning and prepare the reader this article
applies the definition of bias as applied by Grosclose and Milyo, whose paper A Measure of
Media Bias which was published in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in November of 2005 and
is still relevant today; Before proceeding, it is useful to clarify our definition of bias. Most
important, the definition has nothing to do with the honesty or accuracy of the news outlet. Instead,
our notion is more like a taste or preference (Groseclose Milyo, 2005). In the context of a
quantitative content analysis of media bias, its delivery, its targeted audience and ultimate
evaluation will determine the taste and establish preference . Through the intentional and un
intentional portrayal of an established or implied bias the target audience s opinions, ideals and
motivations are necessarily affected. Specifically, the term media in the context of this article refers
to journalistic news sources that are

Does the way we consume caffeine determine our social standing? Java Man by Malcolm
Gladwell is an essay describing caffeine s effects, social standing, and acceptance by society
throughout time. Malcolm Gladwell recounts how caffeine appeals to different classes when
used in different beverages and gives examples of how this legal stimulant affects the body.
Caffeine is the stimulant of choice for many to get them going in the morning and socialization
with others. Malcolm Gladwell gives examples of a very short and unconventional study, which
showed the harmless impacts of caffeine and how caffeine is consumed by a variety of age

Security Breach Of Banking Industry And Retail Business
Security Breach in Banking Industry and Retail Business
Financial technologies play a significant role in modern banking system. Most of us are familiar
with internet banking and mobile banking. These technologies allow us to access our accounts,
transfer funds, pay for our purchases, and even apply for a loan without leaving a house or an
office. In addition, most of us prefer to pay for our purchases with a quick swipe of a credit or a
debit card. No doubt, it is more convenient than caring and counting cash every time we go to a
store. But, unfortunately all these technologies come at a cost. Time to time, we hear news about
another security breach in the banking system or retail business, when customers personal

The Catholic Church And Nazi Party Essay
One is a faith that billions of people have worshiped for hundreds of years, and the other is a regime
based on racist theories. Catholicism and Nazism. These two congregations have more in common
than anyone could have imagined. Both had principles and theories. History shows that both parties
shared hatred and sought out those they disapproved of for questioning, torture and even execution.
The medieval Catholic Church and Nazi Partyhad common motives. However, those in
disagreement argue that one is a faith and the other is politics. The actions of the Nazi Party were
distinct replications of those of the medieval Roman Catholic Church, which is a reminder to all that
any prevailing party, whether it be political or religious, can command a threatening power.
Catholicism was a prominent religion for over 1,000 years. Before the Reformation of the 1500s,
anyone who was Christian belonged to the Catholic Church any other form of Christianity was
considered a denomination. To eliminate denominations, the Church turned to inquisition. The Papal
Inquisition began in the late 12th century, when Pope Innocent III sent cardinals to Southern
France, where heresy was popularizing. However, the official inauguration is considered 1231,
when Pope Gregory IX sent Dominicans to Southern France, Germany, Austria, Lombardy, and
Aragon to convict heretics. Heretics were granted the chance to admit their deceit and return to the
Roman Catholic Church. If their heresy was sustained,

Stylistic Devices In The Opening Ceremony
Another tendency noted in the British newspapers is the frequent use of stylistic devices such as
oxymoron, antithesis or paradoxes, in order to describe the opening ceremony and Britain. Most of
them were retrieved from The Guardian, but they were present in all the newspapers:
The latter sentence suggests that the opening ceremony, and by extension the country itself, tends
to be described as a contradictory entity. This tendency is confirmed above all in The Guardianand
in The Times. As far as the adjectives are concerned, one can see that The Guardian is more
objective than The Independent, which only showcased Britain and the opening ceremony under a
very positive light. However, a majority of positive qualifications were used, and Matthew Caines,
from The Guardian, pointed out that the newspaper was pretty much all out of adjectives to
describe the spectacle.

Reaction to Boyle s Socialist Vision of the United Kingdom
Whereas the majority of the audience praised the opening ceremony, some did not agree with the
general burst of enthusiasm. As mentioned in a previous section, one recurrent negative adjective
that was used in all of the newspapers that have been analysed is the word leftie .
That controversy ensued from a series of tweets posted by the British Conservative Member of
Parliament for Cannock Chase, Aidan Burley, on July 27, 2012, during the London 2012 opening
ceremony. The MP fiercely denounced the social and multicultural aspect depicted in the spectacle,
labelling it leftie, multicultural crap . The actual tweets were:

Episode 4 (Death Runs Riot) In the 1850 s, more American pioneers moved west, bringing with
them slavery that would ignite the Civil War. Tactics that had defeated the armies of the South
would then begin to be used against the Native Americans of the West. In Bleeding Kansas,
abolitionists battle for free soil. In Utah, federal troops march against Mormon their practice of
polygamy. The war between North and South unleashes visceral savagery in the West, and leaves
behind an army prepared for total war against the Native Americans of the plains. Introductory

Julia Lovejoy, an antislavery advocate who had recently moved to Kansas, provides some
narrative unity for the first theme. Her letters, written to relatives in New Hampshire, detail the
horrors of bleeding Kansas. The second theme is told effectively from the perspective of Black
Kettle, the Cheyenne peace chief, whose people were the victims of both Colonel John
Chivington s massacre at Sand Creek, Colorado, and George Armstrong Custer s 1868 attack on
the banks of the Washita River. Individual segments, which could be shown separately or safely
omitted, tell the stories of: Samuel Clemens sharpening his wit in his early years as a reporter in
Nevada City; and John D. Lee, who led the Mormons in a massacre of a wagon train at Mountain
Meadows. This tragic incident, controversial both then and now, is explained in the context of
rising American hostility toward Mormons, and the latter group s fears of the U.S. Army marching

Implications for Today’s Online Educators Essay
Introduction
This research includes a comprehensive understanding of the current outlook of present online
educators in which the applicable implications can be extracted and retained for novice web based
instructors. The problems relating to this research are the various factors that arise in the provision
of web based instruction. These various factors include variables of interest that pertain to particular
successes and barriers in which web based instructors have encountered. For purposes of this
research, online and web based instruction (instructors) will refer only to higher education

Literature Review
The essential problem presented in this research deals with instructors taking the role of online
educators without proper support and application of research that clearly describes an effective
process that constitutes achievements and goals. Thus, several online teaching and learning
dimensions are presented to explain many successes and barriers that are often experienced today in
online instruction.
When considering course design, novice online instructors may consider the use of discussion
boards as a technique to promote critical thinking. Asynchronous online discussions are an
important communication tool for distance education (Bai, 2009). Many researchers agree that
asynchronous discussions encourage reflective learning, in depth thinking and meaningful
processing of information (Bai, 2009; Black, 2005; Dixson, Kuhlhorst Reiff, 2006; Gilbert
Dabbagh, 2005; Hara, Bonk Angeli, 2000). However, the actual quality of these discussions has
become a major concern regarding students cognitive engagement (Bai, 2009).
To address this concern, Bai (2009) conducted a study in which students participate in online
discussions to

For thousands of years, many cultural traditions have stood uninterrupted by one another. As culture
inevitably changed, societies remained respected. However, with the influence of globalization in
recent centuries, change has become intertwined with conflict. In many instances, a natural change
is not enough. When two societies collide, acculturation can occur, as members of the weaker
society acquire aspects of the dominant society. Despite acculturation s oppressive nature, dominant
cultures may seek the complete eradication of the other: genocide. An excerpt from The Convention

Before understanding how gravely women have been treated, we must first comprehend how the
ethnic crisis in Darfur occurred. Darfur is a region in Western Sudan, with a population of nearly
six million people. In 1896, the British staged a colonial invasion of Sudan, hoping to carry out their
discriminatory world views of European domination. According to Savo Heleta (2007, 4) the British
administration heavily invested in the north, modernizing and liberalizing political and economic
institutions and improving social, educational, and health services... . With focus in the North, the
British created a Sudanese government that has never recuperated from colonial policy and impact.
Centered in Khotoum, the government was set up without regards for previous ethnic differences
that had been present in the country for centuries. The British followed through with a divide and
rule policy; a policy which established a division between Muslim Arabs and African Blacks. A
few elite (namely, African Blacks who were converted to Christianity) were put into power by the
colonists, creating a great unequal distribution of privilege. Tensions continued to rise between the
Muslim Arabs and African Blacks, especially when the colonists left. In 1989, General Omar Bashir
overthrew Sudan by a military coup. The National Islamic Front government, now in power, stirred
deeper cultural conflict. Wanting total political control and to showcase

Chivalry Compared To Today
Chivalry was designated for knights as a moral code or law for them to abide by, but sadly has
been slowly being brushed under the rug by their following generations. Growing up I was taught
certain aspects of a new hybrid of the Code of Chivalry such as courtesy, honor, humbleness,
respect, and proper manners. Chivalrysince medieval times has slowly dissipated into almost
nothing compared to today. Now I am not suggesting that these traits have been lost indefinitely but
they have certainly minimized. Parents are not teaching their children to be polite or use proper
manners. Those traits are something I would like to thank my father for instilling in myself. I hold
courtesy, honor, humbleness, respect, and proper manners highly because many people respect that.

Solemn Soot and Social Despair
In the Transformative World of William Blake England was changing. The rolling green shires
and inspiring scenery that was fixed in the earliest memories of the Romantic poets was quickly
vanishing. There was a trade off happening. Rivets for rocks, chimney stacks for trees,
locomotives for carriages and steal tracks for cobblestone. Piece by piece England s quaint
agricultural backdrop was being replaced by a stern industrial one. Progress! Some shouted. The
greater good! Others exclaimed. Expansion was becoming virtuous. In droves they came from the
country to work in London s factories. The machines ruled the fields now. Farmers turned their
plows in for hammers and the way peopled lived was never going to be the same.
A new social class was developing in England. It was the working class. And although a wider
segment of the population was producing, creating steam for the Empire, certain leading minds of
the time had to examine the under belly of this fiery beast. In William Blake s poems The Chimney
Sweeper and London he does just that. Through this examination Blake dwells on the theme of the
loss of innocence. He writes these two works in a straight forward tone, almost like a social
awareness pamphlet, urging the reader to wake up. And in typical Romantic fashion he does this
through stark imagery. What impression would a first time reader have after digesting these pieces
when first published? Depending on their class

Animal Vivisection
Live animal dissection have been recorded in ancient Greek writings from as early as 500 BC.
Vivisection (dissection of living organisms) was first practiced on humans in ancient Rome, but it
was soon prohibited and thus the need for animal subjects.
During the early stages of animal testing, Many philosophers debated on animal vivisection,
Aristotle argued that animals lacked intelligence, and so the meaning of right and wrong had no
meaning to them. Theophrastus, Aristotle s successor, disagreed and objected to the vivisection of
animals on the idea that like humans, they can feel pain, and causing pain to animals was an insult
to the gods. Descartes knew that animals could feel, but lacked a conscious, thus he argued that
they were unable to consciously experience those feelings. Many others believed that animals were
automata and that the way they experience pain and feelings is not the same as humans. Not until
animals as pets were becoming more common did people start to really question the morality of
animal vivisections, and thus, the birth of animal rights groups started popping up in 19th century
England.
Theodora Capaldo is president of the New England Anti Vivisection Society(NEAVS). An animal
rights organization with a goal to end the use of animals in research, testing and science. NEAVS is
dedicated to giving outreach and education for helping replace animals with more modern
alternatives that are more efficient, ethical and humane. In Capaldo s article

Citizen Kane Research Paper. When Discussing The Greatest
Citizen Kane Research Paper When discussing the greatest films of all time, Citizen Kane,
directed by Orson Welles, usually comes up. It s influence in American cinema can still be felt
today, but at the time the film was not released without controversy. The main character in the
movie, Charles Foster Kane, is undeniably based of the real life figure of William Randolph Hearst,
a famous American newspaper publisher. Hearst was very aware of this fact and tried to hinder
the success of Welles picture by denying it any sort of press in his newspapers. Despite the smear
campaign Kane s influence lives on through Welles revolutionary filmic techniques and its presence

Mayer helped Hearst by offering to buy the print of the film only to destroy it. Other Hearst
defenders intimidated film curators into not showing the movie. With the attacks were coming left
and right, Arnold Weissberger, the manager of Orson Welles
, sent this memo to him: This is not a
tempest in a teapot, it will not calm down, the forces opposed to us are constantly at work.
Members of The Hearst organization seemed to have it constantly out for Welles, even if direct
orders weren t given from Hearst himself. They repeatedly try to align Welles as a communist,
trying to get him on the Hollywood communist blacklist. The craziest scheme set forward by one
of Hearst s lackeys, was a plot to frame him as a pedophile. Welles was on a post film lecture tour
when a police officer stops him before entering his hotel room. The officer said that a
photographer had planted a fourteen year old girl in his closet, waiting for Welles to enter so he
could take pictures. Welles decided to stay overnight at the train station to avoid all the controversy.
Hearst s campaign to diminish the film s returns were, at the time, somewhat successful. The film
did get released and was the sixth highest grossing film of that year, the studios had expected more.
It went on to receive nine nominations and one win (best screenplay) from the 1941 Academy
Awards.
Citizen Kane as a film is highly heralded, its fresh techniques went on to influence film everywhere.

Funeral Planning For Life After Death

Funerals
It s assumed that people have knowledge of what is appropriate planning for life after death, but
nobody is ever prepared; and that is why preplanning is necessary. Death and dying is a part of life
nobody likes to discuss, plain and simple, it makes us uncomfortable. This is a major contributor to
why no one plans ahead. Nobody likes to think about death, it isn t a pleasant thought to most of us.
However, unfortunately, in our lifetime, avoiding a funeralis inevitable.
In pursuing this further, there are several aspects to this topic; such as, preplanning, financial
planning, cost, and the surviving family members. Funeral planning is something we all will
have to do at one point in our lives, but where should we begin? It is a good idea to start with the
preplanning of the funeral. Preplanning is crucial; it provides piece of mind, especially for
surviving family. As said earlier, discussing one s mortality is an extremely uncomfortable topic;
however, by preplanning a funeral, it will relieve the family of having to make important
decisions during a period of immense stress and grief. Furthermore, preplanning gives time to
explore the options for a ceremony and allows time to discuss the financial aspects. It also gives a
chance to choose a funeral home that best suit ones needs and budget. Moreover, the first decision
that needs to be made

duplex, the property itself did not comply with the space necessary to fulfill a duplex standard.
Therefore, with this lack of space, the home did not uphold to the municipal code, which would

Kidd Understanding Human Origins Summary
Kidd, like many European Christians, explains the importance of Genesis on understanding human
origins. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis by stating that this first book of the Bible
explains the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion
of language (Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching
how legitimate the book of Genesis was and what the underlying similarity between the races was.
Race quickly became a theological problem that challenged the Bible and Christian teachings. It
was important for European Christians to prove the unity of race because it was fundamental to
Christian theology(Kidd, 26). If race was challenged and later stated that... Show more content on

It was seen as a reliable source in understanding the world and how it came to be. Kidd begins to
focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of
certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the
discovery of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention
anything of the New World and most importantly the people living there. Other commentators of
this idea questioned which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the
Bible ignore the New World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its
credibility. It once again challenged and undermined the Christian authority. It challenged the
Christian authority by further questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd,
57). European Christians then turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World
and its new people .
Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer
questions of human origins. These interpretations of biblical passages have also pushed to
question biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn
these specific events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so
hard to make sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. Biblical passages like the stories of Cain
and Noah s sons have paved interpretations for European Christians that lead to certain answers of
human origins over

Adapting Climate Change Involves Taking Practical Action
Adapting to climate change involves taking practical action. Humans that live on the earth have
to learn that the world is constantly changing and anything is bound to happen at any moment. In
order to protect what s yours and for others to survive, humans must learn to adapt to climate
changes. It s not only protecting what s yours, but it s also about protecting the environment as to
where one gets their resources from. It s just like how the seasons change throughout the year in
some parts of the country. There is Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall; it s a repeating cycle. Some
seasons may be longer than others depending on where a person lives. So people who live in
certain areas of the world know or should know how to adapt to these climatechanges based on the
history of that area. For humans to survive they must protect the natural resources that are on the
earth. Meaning they must protect the crops, they must protect the land, they must protect the water,
they must protect the animals, and most importantly they must protect each other. The earth is
4.543 billion years old, so the land we have here on earth could diminish at any time. In order to
make earth worth living on, every human being must adapt to the climate changes that evolve. One
must understand as to why climate changeis important. What are humans doing that affect the
climate and how can it affect the lives of billions of people across the world.
Humans must learn strategies to protect natural

She imagines Northanger Abbey to be full of the horrors she has read about in her Gothic novels.
Her imagination gets the best of her and she believes that General Tilney had murdered his wife.
After exploring the Abbey, Catherine finds it to be an ordinary family home: The Abbey in itself
was no more to her now than any other house (Austen 198). She realizes that she has been gravely
mistaken and is ashamed about her feelings: Astonishment and doubt first seized them; and a
shortly succeeding ray of common sense added some bitter emotions of shame (169). She
recognizes that her gothic novels are not reality (Mathison 142). Catherine s disillusionment of
Northanger Abbey is a pivotal moment for her ascent into

prejudice in greek system Essay
A major part of every college campus is the Greek system. Although, many times it goes unnoticed
there is major segregation among the fraternities and sororities in the south. Why is such an
important issue often overlooked? We need to be more aware of segregation because in many cases
it causes conflict. What if an African American wanted to join a traditionally white fraternity or
sororityor vise versa? The chancesof him/her getting in are pretty slim. In fact, it would be most
likely that they would not. The walls of race and the barriers from so called ?traditions? in the
Greek system should be broken in order to diversify the organizations and lead to the changes
necessary to end segregation and discrimination for good.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

A complaint of discrimination was filed last year at the University of Georgia against the Alpha
Gamma Delta sorority. One member was outraged and concerned when an African American
membership candidate ?was discussed separately from other potential members? and her sisters
were finding fault with the candidate (McCarthy). Many gave her low scores ?attributed to her
race? and made comments such as ?Why did she go through White Rush?? (and) ?If we had a
black girl in our sorority, none of the fraternities would want to do anything with us? (McCarthy).
Although it was the first time a sorority had been accused of racial discrimination, one student
made the comment that ?Alpha Gamma Delta probably aren?t the only ones who do it?
(McCarthy). According to Richard Mullendore, vice president of student affairs, few African
American students choose to participate in membership recruitment, or rush, which shepherds
participants from one predominantly white sorority to another? (McCarthy). Why then was this
African American girl being punished and viewed with conviction because her actions were
different from the beliefs of so many? The member of the sorority was even accused by her sisters
?of overreacting to an issue that just wasn?t that important!? Equality is not important? I am
positive those members of the sorority would not like it one

A Psychologically Fascinating Tool For The Classroom
A psychologically fascinating tool for the classroom Video games get a bad name for
themselves because some people will spend hours in front of a screen working towards a virtual
goal. They are blamed way too often for making kids violent and giving them an unrealistic view
of the real world. Video games such as Atari s Pong and Tomohiro Nishikado s Space Invaders
only had one objective (Welch). Now there are games like Fallout 3 and Assassin s Creed where
there are many objectives, puzzles, and achievable items. When video games were first made
they were seen as mindless entertainment for young and even middle aged people. Now, there
are games that give you entertainment, but also educate you in a fun and creative way. Video
games should be played more because there are many lessons and educative tools used to help
people learn and think while playing and also having fun. According to an article published by
the private University of Rochester, cognitive scientists did a study on fast paced games like Call
of Duty and Battlefield, and they help players be able to think on the move and multitask. They
also help students in classrooms by giving them the ability to have a better understanding of core
materials and take tests easier. The human brain learns easier and retains information better when it
is excited or entertained while learning. Video games such as the Assassin s Creed Series can help
someone learn about history and solve puzzles while enjoying every

the user and the information resource.
There are two main approaches to IR, which are statistical approach and semantic approach. In a
statistical approach, documents are analyzed and broken down into chunks of text and each word
or phrase is counted, weighted, and measured for relevance or importance. Meanwhile, semantic
approaches to IR use knowledge based techniques of retrieval the broadly rely on the syntactic,
lexical, sentential, discourse based, and pragmatic levels of knowledge understanding. In practice,
semantic approaches also apply some form of statistical analysis to improve the retrieval process.

plain and unprocessed item and need to be processed. Data itself is useless until it is organized.
Meanwhile, information is a collection of data after it process. Generally, there are three main
differences between data and information such as their meaning, example and definition.

Thomas Edison Discovers Light
Thomas Edison Discovers Light Have you ever wondered who made light and where it came
from? Have you wondered what light is? Well, I am here to tell you about the man who not only
created light, but also taught many people how to use it in the future. That man was Thomas
Alva Edison. He was inspired by many things, but the wonders of light really amazed him; he
even thought about how light worked and how he could make it. People might say that Thomas
was inspired by how light was so fascinating and what it can do. That is just too simple he was
really inspired by the complexity of it and how he can help other people by making light. Now, this
is something that is not so simple, but he not only created light, he created many other things. Let
me first tell you about his life.
Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. He was from a family of nine; out
of the seven children, he was the youngest. His parents were Samuel and Nancy Edison and they
stayed in Milan, where he spent most of his childhood. For his education, he went to the Cooper
Union. At one point people considered him a difficult child, so he was home schooled. He had very
little education but he was taught reading, writing, and arithmetic. When he had free time, he
would read scientific and technical books.
Thomas credited his mother for his success he said My mother was the making of me . Before he
went to school, he worked as a newspaper carrier and a telegrapher; he would deliver

Vaclav Havel s The Power Of The Powerless
The dictatorships of Eastern Europe significantly contrasted the classical dictatorship. In Vaclav
Havel s The Power of the Powerless, the idea of the post totalitarian system is used to distinguish
the dictatorships of Eastern Europe from classical dictatorships on the bases of: its verified
historical roots, lack of social distinction of the ruling, open wielding of power, and reliance on
ideology . The post totalitarian system fell victim to the use of ideology as a power source founded
in lies and modifications of reality. The threat truth posed to the post totalitarian system highlighted
its fragile dependency on ideology as a source of manipulative power and falsehoods that allowed
mankind to cope with its departure from humanity. Ideology... Show more content on

Havel explains that the primary excusatory function of ideology was to provide people with the
illusion that the system was in harmony with human order and the order of the universe . It is
because of this that the post totalitarian system was so deeply rooted in lies. It had to falsify the
past, the present and the future to give the illusion that its goals were aligned with those of
mankind, although its true goals were in the name of self service. Individuals may not have
necessarily believed these lies, but they behaved as if they did. This means they had to live within
a lie and accept their place in it. Doing this confirmed the system thereby giving it more power.
Those who accepted the ideological excuses of the system too constituted its power by becoming an
active component of that power. This resulted in the system s power gradually relating more to
ideology than to reality, thereby becoming entirely dependent on deceptions. The structure of the
system was sustained and held together through the power created from the lies and excuses
provided by ideology. It supplied rules and regulations for its subordinates and integrated
communication by guaranteeing the inner coherence of the power structure . Here it can be seen
that the presence of truth, would have been an undoing element to the functioning of the

Sylvia Plath Thesis
Sylvia Plath is best known for the intense coupling of violent or disturbed imagery with the
playful use of alliteration and rhyme in her work. (poets.org). Daddy, one of Plath s poems is a
way for her to express her life story and allow others to see into it. Living in an abusive home, she
was torn down daily. She makes it clear that her father was a male dominating, evil individual. By
constantly being in this environment, it ultimately affected her work. Daddywas written only
months before she committed suicide by placing her head in a gas oven. By taking her life in this
extreme way, it shows how much of an impact the relationship with her father had; she could only

(need an argumentative thesis) Those that have read Daddy, know that there is a repetitive
mention of victim and villain, Nazi and Jew. Plath uses the Holocaust as an analogy and final cry
to be heard. This poem was written roughly twenty years after the Holocaust occurred, some may
find this as insensitive, however Plath knew she was using it to her advantage, a way to express the
intensity and horridness of living with her father. It allowed an insight for the readers to truly
understand her feelings. Plath grew up with her father, a German, who was a manipulative man that
did not understand the idea of being kind. Poets.org suggests that Mr. Plath was a strict man, and
that Sylvia Plath lived in what seemed like a communistic environment. Until she was eight years
old, Plath put up with her father s wickedness; after his passing, she became obsessed with his
death and began to overwhelm herself with a mix of emotions. This went on to define her
relationships and poems. She went on to marry Ted Hugheswho, shortly after, left her for Assia
Gutmann Wevill, which threw her into a deep depression. She proceeded for ten years to attempt

  • 2. Pros Of Vaccines Vaccines are a revolutionary form of technology that save lives, lessen child mortality rates, and strengthen child immunity. Vaccination technology has become sophisticated since the knowhow of inoculation was first presented. Death resulting diseases are nearly eradicated in first world countries. Herd immunity is a bonus to the aftermath of immunization, offering another level of protection against disease. Though the potential side effects of vaccines cause concern for some, the benefits of this medication knowledge outweigh the rare potential dangers. Vaccinations are a key development towards survival and the eradication of fatal disease. The first form of vaccines began in the 1100s through a process known as inoculation. This process ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lisa Estall expressed her uncertainty and concerns about vaccinating her year old daughter. Every where I go, someone s talking about the danger of vaccines, ... I can t help but wonder: Should I really be injecting a healthy child with these things? (Vaccines: The Reality Behind the Debate). As all new parents will eventually go through, whether to vaccinate their children or not is a valid concern created from uncertainty of the pros and cons of immunization. The chemicals used in vaccines are harmless with a low dosage of active ingredients. It is unlikely for individuals to get seriously sick following a vaccination. Though an allergic reaction may occur, the probability of a serious negative reaction is approximately 1/2,000,000 doses of vaccine (Vaccine ingredients). Another concern is the misconception that vaccines are a direct cause for cognitive disabilities such as autism. Autism is considered to be a mental condition that becomes present in early childhood and may make it harder for the individual to communicate or connect with other people. Symptoms of autism becomes most obvious between 2 and 3 years of age, however can sometimes be diagnosed as early as 18 months. (What Is Autism? ) The hype that certain vaccines will result in the child developing autism due to a chemical known as thimerosal is the subject of outdated information. This specific chemical is no longer in use and therefore vaccines pose no genuine risk to the mental capacity of children. As well, studies have been conducted in Denmark, US and Canada between 1991 1998 determining that vaccination does not have a direct relationship with the development of autism (Autism). Herd immunity is a beneficial side effect of immunization. When a critical portion of a community is immunized against a contagious disease, most members of the community are protected against that disease ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. An Argument In Shakespeare s Work Therefore, Edward De Vere is a strong contender s an alternative writer to Shakespearean work. Although Earl De Vere is the most likely candidate to have authored Shakespeare s work, there are other alternative possibilities such as Francis Bacon and a group of individual writers. Francis Bacon was a famous philosopher of this time period, who kept company and traveled with other well educated aristocrats. (bbcamerica.com) Bacon s travels as well as his social rank make him a notable contender as an alternate writer of Shakespearean plays. As a leading figure of the English Renaissance, he certainly had the biography for it: educated at Cambridge, widely traveled, Bacon was a famous philosopher, one of the inventors of the scientific method, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These believers cite important counter arguments supporting William Shakespeareas the true author. For instance, No Elizabethan documents support the claim that Shakespeare s plays and poems were written by someone else, or that the actor Shakespeare was not the author Shakespeare. (shakespeare online.com) Clearly, the evidence doubting Shakespeare s authorship has no clear backing emanating from the Elizabethan period when Shakespeare was alive rather it was a theory started well after Shakespeare s passing. A more specific counter argument concentrates on the number one alternate to William Shakespeare Edward De Vere17th Earl of Oxford. In examining, the historical data, the dates do not support the theory that the Earl of Oxford wrote all of Shakespeare s work. Oxford died in 1604, and significant evidence indicates that some of Shakespeare s work was produced years later. (For instance, The Tempest was influenced by a voyage to the Americas that did not occur until 1610). (news.psu.edu). This is convincing evidence that the Earl of Oxford did not write all of Shakespeare since the Earl of Oxford s death predates many references seen in Shakespearean ... • 4. Socrates Vs Cepachus Socrates is invited into Polemarchus home, he begins to engage in a conversation with Cephalus where they eventually discuss the meaning of justice using Socratic dialectic. A Socratic dialectic is a cooperative discussion where common opinions, that most people will say when asked, are exchanged through socialization. To showcase Socratic dialecticin the conversation, Cephalus answers Socratesquestion and states his own view of what is justicewhich is to follow the law, which is divine, and to tell the truth. Socrates begins to engage Cephalus stance on justice which leads to the deduction behind his viewpoint. Socrates and Thrasymachus discuss examples of such proficient individuals such as a doctor or a pilot and their roles such as the doctor who is sought by those who require medical care or the pilot who is commander of the sailors, Thrasymachus citing these examples as proof of his claims. Socrates uses Thrasymachus examples to counter his argument by claiming it is the exact opposite by stating how the doctor is the one who is dependent on the sick for his art, and if there were no sick people, he would be useless and thus powerless. The pilot depends upon his men to accept his authority and follow his commands, for if they so desired, they could easily mutiny and overthrow him. This can be applied to the rulers of a nation, as they may also not know if the laws they are implementing can be good or not, which also carries the risk of losing the support of the masses. Socrates makes the case that without all these people to rule, the doctor, pilot, and ruler would all find themselves without power for it comes from the ruled, after which the discussion turns to these positions being self centered such as the doctor being a wage earner and not concerned over their distribution of ... • 5. Dr. Bernard, Canada s Nine Non Partisan Senators Introduction In October 2016, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau named Nova Scotia s Wanda Thomas Bernard as one of Canada s nine non partisan senators (Williams, 2016). According to Semansky (2016), Dr. Bernard, who serves as the university s special advisor, diversity and inclusiveness, [is] the first African Nova Scotian woman to serve in the Senate Chamber (para. 2). In response to the news, Bernard has stated that equity for all is [her] primary goal in life. To be able to enter the Senate with that perspective and contribute to the country is an incredible privilege, one that [she] knows [she] will be accountable for (Semansky, 2016, para. 7). While Trudeau has named diversity as a priority within the Canadian Parliament,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this section, I will briefly discuss the effects of Trudeau s Senate reforms and argue that reform is better than abolishment. Trudeau s three phased Senate reforms give minority group leaders an opportunity to represent their communities. The reforms attempt to shift the focus from gaining support for the Liberal party, to a collection of different and diverse minds within the Senate. The first phase of the reforms focused on the [removal of] all senators from the national Liberal caucus , which inherently suggested that senators [no longer] have formal or organic ties with the Liberal caucus, nor do they have any organizational, financial or other formal responsibilities within the Liberal Party (Dion, 2015, para. 5). Going from there, the [creation of] a new, nonpartisan, merit based, broad and diverse process to advise the prime minister on Senate appointments was the second item on the agenda (Dion, 2015, para. 6). Finally, the third phase targeted the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as women and minorities, in the Senate (Dion, 2015). Therefore, Trudeau s appointments are changing the direction of the Senate to include historically oppressed minorities and their representatives. That being stated, one particular argument that has been raised in opposition to Senate reforms is that the upper house is no longer relevant and should be abolished (Maclean s, 2013). • 6. The Management Of Mental Health Disorders Psychiatry and psychology work together in treating and diagnosing mental disorders. Mental illness include abnormalities in the emotional, mental, and behavioral areas of an individual s life. Mental disorders are diagnosed by the outlined criteria, in approved diagnostic manuals. The management of mental healthdisorders involves a combination therapy of drugs and psychotherapy such as electroconvulsive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy as well as others, depending on the disease. The treatment can be outpatient or inpatient depending on the disease severity. Some patients or their family may question the effect of the treatment they receive, like medicine, because of the constant change of therapy plans and modifications in prescription. Although some treatments have been questioned on their effectiveness, psychotherapy has a positive outcome in patients. There is much thought around psychiatry with people questioning the efficiency of the psychiatric treatment and others arguing that mental disorders do not exist. Individuals with anti psychiatric views claim that the treatments that are used for mental illnesses are ineffective, unsafe, unnecessary, and are not any helpful to the patients. Questions have arisen that psychiatry hand out medicine freely and that certain measures used in the treatment of mental illnesses like lobotomy, an operation that disconnects connections in the front of the brain, and electro convulsion that send electric currents to create ... Goodnight And Good Luck And The Crucible Comparison The Crucible and Goodnight and Good Luck are currently relevant due to recent news articles and television programs that show communism in society today. There are many citizens who undergo social and political segregation due to differences in culture, political views, ethnicity, etc. In Goodnight and Good Luck, people would get fired and denied acceptance in society; They were accused of having a tie with communism, similar to today s society. The reason for communism existing today, is based upon genderidentity, disability, and race. To begin, in today s society people are shunned or denied jobs based solely on how they prefer to be identified as. Different countries have stereotypical qualities; thus, leaving them no option but to flee their country and come to America. For instance, Many who have fled to the US seeking protection from torture, sexual violence, and other forms of persecution in their home countries related to their gender identity or gender expression. This is relevant to The Crucible and today s society, because women and men are fleeing from America to seek protection from gender identity discrimination. • 9. The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Essay The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer In her feminist critique of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Anne Millard Daughtey described Buffy as a show which obviously promotes female strength and power (159). Buffy herself is a symbol of female empowerment (149); as feminists we can all take comfort in the fact that Buffy kicks butt and so can we all (164). Sherryl Vint agrees that Buffy is a positive role model for young women, one which feminism should celebrate (para. 3). I find this understanding of Buffy, both the character and the series, to be very problematic, and with this paper I aim to undertake a revised feminist critique of the show, and expose the Buffyverse as the product of a very traditional patriarchal ... Before Buffy and her friends discover this, Dawn has a number of unnerving experiences, in which people walk up to her staring, saying There s nothing there, you re not real, there s nothing there . Truly, in the Buffyverse, there is no such thing as woman . Prior to embarking upon my own analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it this pertinent to consider Joss Whedon s envisioning of his series, and in particular, his heroine, Buffy. In interviews he has often explained his desire to create an alternative ending for the horror movie: It was pretty much the blond girl in the alley in the horror movie who keeps getting killed ... I felt bad for her, but she was always much more interesting to me than the other women. She was fun, she had sex, she was vivacious. But then she would get punished for it. Literally, I just had that image, that scene, in my mind, like the trailer for a movie what if the girl goes into that dark alley. And the monster follows her. And she destroys him. (Quoted in Vint, para. 6) Whilst we see here that Whedon s intention is to subvert the conventional horror movie/slasher genre, I m not sure that he is successful. He is running the considerable risk of merely replacing the fetishised female victim with a fetishised female hero; she is still a pretty blond girl, she is still fun, she is still sexual, she is still Barbie with ... American Indian Reservations According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 26.6 % of single race American Indians and Alaska Natives were living in poverty in 2015, the highest rate of any race group (American Indians By The Number). This statistic is even more surprising when informed the Indian Reservations are managed by the Federal Government. The Indian Removal Act, Federal Trust Doctrine and Reservation Period played a major role in current Native American economics. These historical policies were designed over 200 years ago to prevent Native American prosperity and they need to be eliminated. The Indian Removal Act was the legislation that opened the door for current economic struggle of the Native American communities. President Andrew Jackson signed the policy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Indian Appropriations Act of 1851 authorized the establishment of legally recognized reservations in the United States (Indian Reservations). The land which makes up the reservations are owned by the United States Government. This allows the Government to mediate and dictate everyday life of the Native Americans. Chief Justice John Marshall established the foundation of laws pertaining to the Native Americans in 1831, through the Federal Trustee Doctrine. The Supreme Court verified the Federal Government was the trustee of Native American affairs, instead of the State. Most of the policies made, pertaining to Native Americans, were created from the seed of this policy. This type of verbiage and ideology is why the Government is to blame for the current economic struggle on reservations. The information previously stated gives credence in which the U.S. Government is fully responsible for the prevention of Native American prosperity. The Native Americans are restricted from utilizing the land for agriculture and energy resources. It was designed this way, from policies created in our history, to hinder prosperity and make a once great society reliant on its conquer. If the land dedicated to reservations were to be relinquished and managed by the tribes, then reservation economics would be able to flourish. • 11. The Importance Of Education Why do students continue to enter a college education system that is no longer focusing on them? The education system was built to serve the interest of the public, to provide opportunities for people to further their education and move up or maintain their social classes, and to teach people to think for themselves. All of the authors Menand, Roth, and Couturier all agree that educationis threatened by the fact that colleges are focusing more on their private affairs instead of the students. They believe collegeshould be focused on the student and their ability to think on their own and enhance their capabilities (Roth 2). Rose Hulman does this well by challenging their students with a hard curriculum, but at the same time they are willing to give them plenty of opportunities to find success with smaller class sizes and a student friendly environment. Michael Roth believes that people aremore than just human capital for society; he thinks that everyone should be able to find significance in their lives and work (3). In his essay Learning as Freedom, by he discusses why education should be more than just learning how to do a skill; John Dewey said, it should be about enhancing our capabilities (2). He describes how everyone has their role is society and that not everyone can be a leader, but Roth quotes Dewey saying, the great thing for one as for the other is that each shall have had the education which enables him to see within his daily work all there is in it ... The rolling green shires and inspiring scenery that was fixed in the earliest memories of the Romantic poets was quickly vanishing. There was a trade off happening. Rivets for rocks, chimney stacks for trees, locomotives for carriages and steal tracks for cobblestone. Piece by piece England s quaint agricultural backdrop was being replaced by a stern industrial one. Progress! Some shouted. The greater good! Others exclaimed. Expansion was becoming virtuous. In droves they came from the country to work in London s factories. The machines ruled the fields now. Farmers turned their plows in for hammers and the way peopled lived was never going to be the same. A new social class was developing in England. It was the working class. And although a wider segment of the population was producing, creating steam for the Empire, certain leading minds of the time had to examine the under belly of this fiery beast. In William Blake s poems The Chimney Sweeper and London he does just that. Through this examination Blake dwells on the theme of the loss of innocence. He writes these two works in a straight forward tone, almost like a social awareness pamphlet, urging the reader to wake up. And in typical Romantic fashion he does this through stark imagery. Vivisection (dissection of living organisms) was first practiced on humans in ancient Rome, but it was soon prohibited and thus the need for animal subjects. During the early stages of animal testing, Many philosophers debated on animal vivisection, Aristotle argued that animals lacked intelligence, and so the meaning of right and wrong had no meaning to them. Theophrastus, Aristotle s successor, disagreed and objected to the vivisection of animals on the idea that like humans, they can feel pain, and causing pain to animals was an insult to the gods. Descartes knew that animals could feel, but lacked a conscious, thus he argued that they were unable to consciously experience those feelings. Many others believed that animals were automata and that the way they experience pain and feelings is not the same as humans. Not until animals as pets were becoming more common did people start to really question the morality of animal vivisections, and thus, the birth of animal rights groups started popping up in 19th century England. Theodora Capaldo is president of the New England Anti Vivisection Society(NEAVS). An animal rights organization with a goal to end the use of animals in research, testing and science. It s influence in American cinema can still be felt today, but at the time the film was not released without controversy. The main character in the movie, Charles Foster Kane, is undeniably based of the real life figure of William Randolph Hearst, a famous American newspaper publisher. With the attacks were coming left and right, Arnold Weissberger, the manager of Orson Welles , sent this memo to him: This is not a tempest in a teapot, it will not calm down, the forces opposed to us are constantly at work. Members of The Hearst organization seemed to have it constantly out for Welles, even if direct orders weren t given from Hearst himself. They repeatedly try to align Welles as a communist, trying to get him on the Hollywood communist blacklist. The craziest scheme set forward by one of Hearst s lackeys, was a plot to frame him as a pedophile. Welles was on a post film lecture tour when a police officer stops him before entering his hotel room. The officer said that a photographer had planted a fourteen year old girl in his closet, waiting for Welles to enter so he could take pictures. Welles decided to stay overnight at the train station to avoid all the controversy. Hearst s campaign to diminish the film s returns were, at the time, somewhat successful. Death and dying is a part of life nobody likes to discuss, plain and simple, it makes us uncomfortable. This is a major contributor to why no one plans ahead. Kidd points out the significance of Genesis by stating that this first book of the Bible explains the origins of mankind, the peopling of the world by the sons of Noah, and the confusion of language (Kidd, 19). Kidd then begins to explain how historians were tempted into researching how legitimate the book of Genesis was and what the underlying similarity between the races was. Kidd begins to focus on this idea and whether the Bible was a reliable source or if it only covered the history of certain part, or parts, of the world (Kidd, 55). This phenomenon can most be seen with the discovery of the New World and Native Americans. Kidd explains how the Bible did not mention anything of the New World and most importantly the people living there. Other commentators of this idea questioned which lineage, if any, did the Native Americans descend from and why did the Bible ignore the New World. This spawned an entire new form of questioning the Bible and its credibility. It once again challenged and undermined the Christian authority. It challenged the Christian authority by further questioning if Noah and his sons populated the entire earth (Kidd, 57). European Christians then turned to other parts of the Bible to make sense of this New World and its new people . Throughout history, European Christians have used personal interpretations of the Bible to answer questions of human origins. These interpretations of biblical passages have also pushed to question biblical authority and its accountability. This has proved that it is significant to learn these specific events in history because these events allow us to understand how historians tried so hard to make sense of the Bible and ensure its authority. Havel explains that the primary excusatory function of ideology was to provide people with the illusion that the system was in harmony with human order and the order of the universe . It is because of this that the post totalitarian system was so deeply rooted in lies. It had to falsify the past, the present and the future to give the illusion that its goals were aligned with those of mankind, although its true goals were in the name of self service. Individuals may not have necessarily believed these lies, but they behaved as if they did. This means they had to live within a lie and accept their place in it. Doing this confirmed the system thereby giving it more power. Those who accepted the ideological excuses of the system too constituted its power by becoming an active component of that power. This resulted in the system s power gradually relating more to ideology than to reality, thereby becoming entirely dependent on deceptions. The structure of the system was sustained and held together through the power created from the lies and excuses provided by ideology.
