MUSIC VIDEO
ASSIGNMENT 2
Cameron Roy
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
VAMPIRE WEEKEND – A-
PUNK
Vampire weekend
music video by A-
PUNK is produced
very well, it is filmed
slow and sped up
when edited to give
the jittering effect,
however each word
mimed is in time
with the word,
extremely clever
and unique.
STORMZY – VOSSI BOP
Vossi bop music video
was in my opinion the
best out of the five we
researched, with many
amazing shots of
London and excellent
transitions when
tempo of music
changes, features of
idris elba helps with
the brand exposure,
for those in the target
audience who may
know of Idris and not
Stormzy, it may help
engage
HOT CHIP - I FEEL
BETTER
Click to add text
this music video starts
with 4 members on
stage with a
"american" and "back-
street boys" type of
feel, then as the video
develops the member
comes out with a
jesus-like glow which
gives a connotation of
his status......until he
comes onto the stage
and kills each member
with his energy,
however all members
appear on stage once
IDLES – MERCEDES
MARXIST
this music video
illustrates
something much
deeper than how the
song sounds, it
displays an insight
into mental health
and how he is
fighting against his
mind, the phrase
"banging my head
against a brick wall"
sums this video up
very well, he is
trying to escape his
thoughts however
APHEX TWIN – COME TO
DADDY
This music video
engages its
audience though
is weird and
whacky style,
although many
may find the
concept of the
video strange, it
very clearly is a
success
POTENTIAL SONGS
"Location" - Dave, Burna boy -
Slow beats, would be ideal for change of shots.
Plenty of content means the video will be more engaging.
"GREECE"- drake, DJ Khalid
Beach/Holiday vibe, built up, plenty of tempo change.
"A teen" - VIC
Builds a story good for tense change of tempo.
"Ain't it different" - AJ Tracey, Headie One
Fast throughout duration of song
"Real life" - Burna boy
Great song for shot changing as it keeps a consistent pace throughout.
POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Slow rotation, (can be edited if the shot is good quality)
Variety of shots, allowing audience to have plenty to look
at. (keeps them interested.
Slow shots down and speed shots up, allowing a really
good effects
Keep on tripod to get a steady and high-quality music
video
CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
Idea 1
Slow build up, shot change on each main beat, a footballer
training to be pro and being rejected, by the end as he
keeps developing and the music builds up, he makes it
pro by the end.
Training clips and success throughout merged with shots
of nice views, time lapses of moving objects or sun setting
or rising etc. (cool shots blended in the tone of music.
Steady tripod shots with camera, and if available a drone
for good footage to be able to edit.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
SUMMARY
Different shots with music over, cuts and change of clip
on beat etc.
Training/motivation build as the song progresses.
Feel a story as the song progresses so it has something
to build up to.
Make sure the filming is to the best ability, producing
the best piece of work possible
Better to film too much than not enough so when edited
there is plenty of options.
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
Timings – however if planned should be able to avoid
being postponed by friends/family etc.
Weather – Make sure plan a few days for filming incase
weather stops us filming so it cannot go ahead
Preparation - cannot let the preparation hold us back,
so get everything ready in advance
Equipment – Make sure camera battery is charged, tripod
is accessible and everything is set ready.
Make sure days booked in is suitable for everyone
involved, including myself with the days I'm not in
college
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
GREECE – drake, dj khaled
No specific relation from song artist to the actual song,
however it’s a good flow for music video and for editing
purposes
Hip hop/contemporary RnB/beats
Really good beats, not too many different lines, therefore
easier to make a muic video for.
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
Slow start, builds up and the beats will match very well
with lyric and shot change, when edited, it should allow a
very creative mindset to allow me to take this further.
The idea of different shots of views and creative things,
will fit really nicely with this song.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Due to the slow start, it could have an introduction to
cast in slow mo, on each beat change, followed by a
build-up of different shots and transitions
As the song progresses, I expect the feel to the song to
be interpreted by the content of the video, with
suspense/intense speed and tempo at the selected parts
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Cool shots and wide range of interesting shots relevant to
song and tempo of the part of song.
The music video should consist of a story-like flow and
high-quality shots that will engage the audience to the best
ability.
The song chosen if still goes ahead will be "Greece" by
drake, it consists of many different tempos allowing me to
be very creative with my ideas, the tempo and speed of the
song changes often throughout the song, meaning there is
room for anything and everything to fit in.
I will be using a Nikon camera with a tripod, and this means
I will fulfil the potential of any shot. A stable camera will
make an average shot look good, once filmed I will be
editing on Premiere Pro on my Mac at home, this means if
any shots need to be filmed after I can do so and add them
in there and then.
LOCATIONS
Locations used will most likely be in York & Leeds City
Centre. With good backdrops such as tall buildings,
multi-story car parks, train stations, canals etc.
The risks could be the Availability of friends/family who
may participate in the video, if we plan to go elsewhere
for the day to catch some better shots for example
London, this will cost a fair amount on the train, both
Leeds and York are on my doorstep therefore shouldn’t
cost too much.
Hopefully, we land good weather on the days we plan to
film so the shots will come out the best and we have no
restrictions.
EQUIPMENT
Camera – sd card – extra battery on hand
Tripod
Mac pro – for editing
Turning tripod attachment for different shots
FACILITIES
Editing will take place at home and at
college, with mac pro and macs at
college.
No other facilities will be used despite
the ones filmed in (in locations section)
PERSONNEL
CREW: I will be filming and producing myself, however, i
may rarely feature and different points in the video.
2 of my mates will be the main features in the video,
which can both expand my ideas and make shots
potentially more creative.
Names Joe, Ethan
CAST: No external performers will be involved, however
cost of food and transport to meet could be the only
expenses.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Double sided blue/green smoke
Different outfits, helps develop different shots (different
shots suit different outfits better.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
KEY MOMENTS IN THE
VIDEO-
The parts which will be key throughout the video will
most likely be the build-up of the story in the cuts
between the good shots of views etc.
The reason this may be the key parts Is due to this being
the relevant link towards the song.
This is the difference between a music video which is
matched up and a music video which has no relevance to
the song.
COLOUR/LIGHTING
I would prefer to approach the music video with bright
and colourful shots as this may help engage the
audience.
If the video is nice and bright, it won't have a miserable,
dull and dark feel to it forcing the audience to feel the
need to click off as they are no longer interested.
If I use natural day light, rather than a room light, the
shots will be clearer, and the camera will pick up a much
more high-quality shot easier.
If an indoor shot must be taken, I will make sure it has
actual lights behind the camera with all intentions on
making the shot look brighter rather than trying to use a
light bulb to make it better lit.
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
Completed and uploaded on to my
blogger.
INTRO
As the intro builds, change from
shot to shot on the correct beat at
the tempo of the song, portraying
different snippets of shots that will
feature throughout the video.
As this will force the audience to
watch the rest of the video if there is
a particular shot which engages
them.
General shots such as bridges,
buildings, busy roads, lakes etc. will
be great for the build-up/ intro , as
it has the one thing everybody has
in common....a nice view. So if they
don’t like the rest of the video, they
CHORUS
Come with me, leave all of
your things, yeah
We can stop at Gucci, stop
at Louis V, yeah
Come with me, fly you out
to Greece
Full speed, survoler Paris,
yeah
Come with me, leave all of
your things, yeah
We can stop at Gucci, stop
at Louis V, yeah
Come with me, fly you out
to Greece
Full speed, survoler Paris
Casts runs down
tunnel to location -
slow motion
Shots of Gucci and
Louis Vuitton clothes,
Another running in
slow-mo shot as the
song is still building
All repeated for
second part of the
verse however
different shots of
everything
French lyric translation
clip
VERSE 2
Rolls Royce, baby, in Hidden
Hills
Bags full of hundred dollar
bills (oui, oui)
Joggin' past your wife and
she get chills (oui, oui)
All because of how I kept it
real
Life's sweet, baby, on the G-
Way
I get you anything you need,
baby, yeah
Worked for everything you
see, baby
Ooh-wee, baby, ooh
Building/lake/boat shot
Flashback to cast
running to certain
destination
Private estates, big gates
to mansions,
Big houses, cool gardens
and expensive cars.
Rolls Royce shot if
spotted.Joke type shot of fake
money
VERSE 3
Never fallin', why you makin'
problems?
I've been silent, why you makin'
problems?
I'm a problem, bein' rich is not my
fault
You decide who you think the shit
reside with
I been quiet, hard to miss me when
I'm flyin'
Gone out to Caicos, she can stay in
my room
She can stay in my room, and it ain't
my
I was tryna play it right
I was tryna treat you nice
Funny how I had to stop
See me when I'm outside
We ain't have a problem
Then you went and found one
How you gonna get a bag?
She can't help but get attached
See me when you're outside
See me on the Southside
I could tell you're sick inside
'Cause she just wanna love me
Shot change on every
line and beat change.
Much slower tempo
from the rest of the
song therefore give
space for different
shots which may need
more time.
Right at the end,
shows the cast
reaching the
checkpoint in slow mo
and then portray
celebration shots with
smoke bombs etc.
STORYBOARD
Here is some
inspiration in to how
some of the shots may

TASK 3.2 Organisational
Planning
PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Cam (me)
Ethan, Joe – cast
They will feature throughout the video in different
sections however will star for most of the video.
LOCATIONS
Leeds and York City Centre
Shots of cool buildings public art and different things
which may happen eg Super cars, boats etc.
Leeds canal boats time lapse
Underground car park
Hotel rooftop shot - Potentially
RISK ASSESSMENT
If filming on a busy road, make sure is safe before
filming takes place.
If filming near canal or water, stay well back, to ensure
everybody is safe and none of the camera equipment is
damaged.
If filming in carpark, the chances of it being busy is high
therefore lookout for oncoming vechicles towards the
shooting areas.
Fire safety – Make sure no dangerous actions could lead
to a fire.
Tripping could result in a serious injury, before filming
starts make sure there are no potential hazards.
If any of the cast has any allergies/medical health issues
CONTINGENCY PLAN
If multi-story car park cannot be used, find another,
there are many located around city centres.
If the part of canal/river cannot be used, find a spot
which can be used.
If one building is too busy to film or enter, finnd another
there is many quirky building which can be used.
2 batteries must be taken incase one runs out and an
extra SD card incase one is faulty or runs out of storage
unexpectedly.
Book with casts in advance so they have plenty of notice
to cancel and rearrange if needed
SCHEDULE
10 hours of filming will commence over 2 days,
Wednesday and Thursday will consist of 5 hours filming
both days, this allows one in Leeds and one in York,
which means there will be plenty of locations to film at.
