Multiply by Two-Digit Numbers Mrs. Young EMC 1
Objective To multiply 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers First let’s review some vocabulary: Factor - Factors are the numbers you multiply together to get another number: Example: 3 and 4 are factors of 12, because 3x4=12. Also 2x6=12 so 2 and 6 are also factors of 12, and 1x12=12 so 1 and 12 are factors of 12 as well.
Vocabulary Product – the answer in a multiplication problem Example: 3 x 4 = 12 ; the product is 12
Step 1: 3 5 2 4 (4 x 5 = ) We multiply the 4 by the 5 . We start multiplying with the 4 We always multiply from right to left. 0 We right down the unit, In this case 0 , Under the 4 2 We carry the 2 and place it by the 3
Step 2: 3 5 2 4 (4 x 3 (+2 )= We then multiply the 4 by the 3 1 4 2 0 We add the 2 carried earlier We right down 14 next The 0
Step 3: 3 5 2 4 Now we start multiplying with the 2 1 4 0 Before we begin multiplying we must first place a in the units column 0 We multiply the 2 by the 5 (2 x 5 = ) Again, we right down the unit and carry the tens 1 0
Step 4: 3 5 2 4 1 4 0 We multiply the 2 by the 3 (2 x 3 (+1) = ) Again, we add the 1 carried earlier 7 0 0
Step 5: 3 5 2 4 1 4 0 0 7 0 Finally we must add the numbers together + 0 4 8
