Orde!ng Decimals
Essential Standard

I can compare and order
decimals to the thousandths
place.
Ordering Decimals

 When ordering decimals, we
follow a series of steps.
Step One
Highlight whether we are going from
least to greatest or greatest to least.

Place the following decimals in order
          from least to greatest.

             0.3 0.12 0.37
Step Two
If the numbers are in a row, write them
in a column.

Place the following decimals in order from
               least to greatest.

                     0.3
                    0.12
                    0.37
Step Three
Line up the decimal points.

           ones tenths hundredths thousandths

 0.3 0 . 3
0.12
0.37 0 . 1 2

            0 . 3 7
Step Four
Put a zero at the end of decimal, if the
numbers being compared are uneven.

              ones tenths hundredths thousandths
 0.3
0.12 0 . 3 0
0.37 0 . 1 2

               0 . 3 7
Step Five
Working LEFT to RIGHT, compare the
 numbers.
                ones tenths hundredths thousandths

                 0 . 3 0

                 0 . 1 2

                 0 . 3 7

Least to Greatest: 0.12 0.3 0.37
Let’s See That
Process Again!!!
Step One
Highlight whether we are going from
least to greatest or greatest to least.

Place the following decimals in order
          from greatest to least.

             6.15 6.157 6.2
Step Two
If the numbers are in a row, write them
in a column.

Place the following decimals in order from
               greatest to least.
                   6.15
                   6.157
                    6.2
Step Three
Line up the decimal points.

           ones tenths hundredths thousandths

6.15 6 . 1 5
6.157
            6 . 1 5 7
 6.2
            6 . 2
Step Four
Put a zero at the end of decimal, if the
numbers being compared are uneven.

               ones tenths hundredths thousandths

 6.32 6 . 1 5 0
6.157
  6.2 6 . 1 5 7

                6 . 2 0 0
Step Five
Working LEFT to RIGHT, compare the
 numbers.
                ones tenths hundredths thousandths

                 6 . 1 5 0

                 6 . 1 5 7

                 6 . 2 0 0

Greatest to Least: 6.2 6.157 6.15
The Five Steps
Highlight whether we are going from least to
greatest or greatest to least.

If the numbers are in a row, write them in a
column.

Line up the decimal points.

Put a zero at the end of decimal, if the numbers
being compared are uneven.

Working LEFT to RIGHT, compare the numbers.
