Multiply Decimals Mrs. Young EMC 1
Remember… When you multiplied decimals and whole numbers, you didn’t need to worry about decimal placement until the end of answering the problem!
Step 1: Multiply 1.2 x 5.3 --- you don’t need to line up the decimal or place values! 1.2 5.3 Reminder: We always multiply from right to left. (3 x 2 = 6 ) We right down the unit, In this case 6 , Under the 3 6
Step 2: Step 2: 1.2 5.3 6 3 We then multiply the 3 by the 1 (3 x 1 = 3) Write down the 3 next the 6
Step 3: 1.2 5.3 Now we start multiplying with the 5 3 6 Before we begin multiplying we must first place a in the units column 0 We multiply the 5 by the 2 (5 x 2 = 10 ) Again, we right down the unit and carry the tens 0 0 1
Step 4: 1.2 5.3 3 6 We multiply the 5 by the 1 (5 x 1 (+1) = 6 ) Again, we add the 1 carried earlier 0 0 1 6
Step 5: 1.2 5.3 3 6 0 6 0 Now, we must add the numbers together + 6 3 6
Step 6: Finally, we need to add the decimal point to our answer. 1.2 5.3 6 3 6 For correct decimal placement in your answer, you count how many numbers are to the right of the decimal in the actual problem. 1 1 (1 + 1 = 2) There will be two digits after the decimal point in the answer. Start at the right of the answer and move left that many spaces. .
