Estimate Quotients Mrs. Young EMC 1 Division
Objective To estimate quotients Estimate the quotient for 4,210 ÷ 6 -What is a quotient?? That’s right! The answer to a division problem!
Step 1 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 4,210 ÷ 6 -First we need to find numbers that are compatible This means that we need to see if there are any basic division facts that we can solve easily. And there is! 42 ÷ 6 = 7
Step 2 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 4,210 ÷ 6 42 ÷ 6 = 7 6 )4 2 1 0 7 0 0 Now all that we do is place the 7 above the 2, and everything else becomes a zero in the answer.
Step 1 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 635 ÷ 8 -First we need to find numbers that are compatible This means that we need to see if there are any basic division facts that we can solve easily. And there is! 64 ÷ 8 = 8
Step 2 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 635 ÷ 8 64 ÷ 8 = 8 8 ) 6 3 5 Now all that we do is place the 8 above the 3, and everything else becomes a zero in the answer. 8 0
Step 1 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 369 ÷ 7 -First we need to find numbers that are compatible This means that we need to see if there are any basic division facts that we can solve easily. And there is! 35 ÷ 7 = 5
Step 2 to estimate quotients: Estimate the quotient for 369 ÷ 7 35 ÷ 7 = 5 7 ) 3 6 9 Now all that we do is place the 5 above the 6, and everything else becomes a zero in the answer. 5 0
