Christopher Columbus was born in 1451 in Genoa, Italy. He was fascinated by the ocean from a young age and taught himself Latin and Castilian. Columbus proposed voyages to reach Asia by sailing west, and convinced the Spanish monarchs to fund his expedition. In 1492, Columbus landed in the Bahamas, believing he had reached Asia, but had actually discovered the Americas. He made three further voyages to the new lands, establishing Spanish colonies. Columbus faced later criticism over his governance and treatment of native peoples. He died in 1506 in Valladolid, Spain from Reiter's Syndrome.
