Christopher Columbus loved the sea from a young age despite having little formal schooling. He worked on ships and proposed exploring a western route to Asia, though the king of Portugal denied funding. Columbus sailed west in 1492 and landed in the Bahamas, believing he had reached Asia. He encountered the native Taino people and explored nearby islands, establishing contact with various tribes but failing to find a western trade route to Asia. Columbus made four voyages to the Americas between 1492 and 1506, though he died in Spain from an unknown disease and is remembered as a pioneering explorer.
