The Humboldt Energy Independence Fund (HEIF) was established in 2007 by Humboldt State University students to finance energy reduction projects through student proposals. HEIF collects $10 per student each semester to fund projects that reduce the campus's energy impact. Example projects include retrofitting lighting systems in the Redwood Bowl and library, optimizing server usage, and installing solar panels. HEIF reviews proposals, provides advising, and funds the most viable projects, often collaborating with the Green Campus Program. The take home message is that synergy between groups like HEIF and GCP can enable significant energy savings and emissions reductions through student-led initiatives.
