This document discusses why the author organizes Rails Girls events. It notes that while computer programming was pioneered by women, it is now a male-dominated field due to marketing and talent crunch problems. Getting more women involved in programming could help address these issues and double open source contributions. The document encourages helping out at Rails Girls events as coaches, spreading awareness of the events, and making the community more inclusive and welcoming to women. The overall goal is to improve diversity and inclusion in the Ruby programming community.
This document provides guidance on time management. It discusses distinguishing between big and small tasks, creating a time management matrix to plan your week, and identifying habits that waste time like social media or television. A key part of the plan is to enter your current tasks and daily habits into a matrix to help prioritize big things over small things and eliminate time wasters so you can get more important things done.
Digital Membership and an organisations that's 173 years oldAnna Dick
How do you apply the culture, practices, processes and technologies of the internet to an organisation that’s 173 years old? And how do you make sure you’re building the right products for the members (who are also the owners) of that organisation?
Anna and Simon are going to talk about how they are answering these questions in their work with the Co-op Membership Programme. They will share both good and bad experiences. And they’ll outline some of the challenges they’ve come across when trying to change how Co-op colleagues think about how and what they deliver. You can expect to hear more about:
how we’re helping people to think less about solutions and more about the outcomes they want to achieve
how we’re embedding user research skills in our teams to inform product development
how we’re applying agile thinking to improve the way we deliver
This document summarizes a discussion about technology in public libraries. The discussion covered emerging technologies like voice assistants, virtual reality, and augmented reality. It explored how libraries can help patrons prepare for technological changes without abandoning existing services. The discussion also addressed challenges like privacy concerns with voice assistants and ensuring equal access to information as technologies change. The goal is for libraries to help patrons navigate new technologies while maintaining core services and remaining relevant in the future.
The document discusses automating tasks to save time. It recommends automating repetitive, low-value tasks that you dislike and that do not help you reach your goals. Examples of tasks to automate include email sorting, scheduling, image and video conversions, file renaming, search and replace functions, and converting documents. Automating recurring tasks can free up time to focus on higher priority work and personal activities. The presentation encourages attendees to identify five tasks they could automate to become more efficient.
8. Tidying only allow what makes you happyzmtanvirmehedi
This document provides training on tidying based on Marie Kondo's book. It discusses how tidying involves keeping only possessions that spark joy and getting rid of everything else. Tidying allows one to let go of people and circumstances holding them back. The philosophy is that clutter uses up mental and physical energy, draining one's success. By tidying and removing what doesn't serve you, one can feel happy and calm every day with only what they love around them. The training recommends choosing a day this week to tidy the entire house at once through donating, throwing out, or not storing extra items. Implementing tidying principles across all aspects of life can help focus only on the 20% that gets results.

This document discusses how to form effective habits by establishing triggers. It explains that for a habit to form, it needs to be motivated, achievable, and triggered. Common triggers include time of day, location, preceding events, emotional states, and other people. The document provides examples of habit stacks and implementation intentions to create strong triggers. It emphasizes finding triggers that work for the individual through testing and committing to habits regardless of motivation.
The document discusses how declarative programming may be better suited than imperative programming for complex systems like big data and artificial intelligence. Declarative programming focuses on describing what you want to achieve rather than how to achieve it. This makes it suitable for logic programming languages like Prolog. However, logic programming is difficult to learn and inefficient on traditional von Neumann computer architectures. Future computers may need to move towards more distributed, graph-like architectures to better support declarative paradigms and induction-based reasoning.
7. how to be ruthlessly good at hiring to be recordedzmtanvirmehedi
This document discusses the importance of hiring others to handle tasks you are not good at or do not enjoy. It argues that hiring allows you to focus on high-value work and achieve better results. Specifically, it recommends hiring when tasks become painful, using personality tests to find the right fit for positions, and ensuring new hires have high integrity by evaluating their work when unsupervised. The overall message is that hiring frees up an entrepreneur's time and energy for profit-generating activities by delegating mediocre or disliked responsibilities to qualified staff.
This document discusses tools for project management and organization. It recommends using Trello as a comprehensive filing system to manage all documents and projects in one place. Slack is recommended for communication over WhatsApp/Messenger as it is more conducive to productivity. Zoom is suggested for video calls as it is easily accessible through links. Screen-O-Matic or similar screen recording tools allow for clearly delegating work through video instead of writing instructions. The overall message is to set up an organized system using these free or low-cost tools to efficiently manage all aspects of one's work and life.
Navigating relationships when no one knows what your job isSarah Khan
This document discusses strategies for digital community coordinators and social media managers to build trust and prove the value of their work when others do not fully understand their roles. It recommends asking questions to understand others' perspectives, meeting stakeholders where they are at with communication plans and project pitches, documenting all processes and reports, and showcasing work through regular updates, reports, and personal branding on social media and other channels. The goal is to shift from unclear or undefined practices to well-documented, transparent processes and measurable outcomes that demonstrate the impact of this type of work.

The document provides an introduction and overview of using a wiki for sharing information. It explains that a wiki allows for easy sharing of content, makes it simple for multiple users to edit documents simultaneously, and ensures changes are visible immediately. It also notes that some content can be locked while still allowing comments, and that large files can be uploaded. The document invites the reader to get started using the wiki and provides basic instructions for setting up an account.
This document discusses habits and how they are formed through repetition that builds myelin in the brain. It defines a habit as an automatic action that results in a massive outcome. When a behavior is repeated over 10,000 times, the brain forms dedicated neural circuits and wraps them in myelin to make the behavior more efficient. This document encourages focusing on small, daily improvements of 1% rather than long-term goals, as daily habits are what drive real progress over time.

This document discusses advances in voice and speech recognition technologies that have enabled intelligent conversational interfaces. It notes that machine speech recognition accuracy has recently surpassed 95%, achieving human-like levels for the first time. This allowed for the development of voice assistants beginning in 2011, though early assistants had limitations. The document outlines the major companies that have developed voice assistants and notes that 2015 marked a tipping point when adoption of these assistants started to rapidly grow. It envisions how conversational AI will transform how companies engage with customers through applications like personal assistants, on-demand services, and smart home control.

The document describes the author's journey from a childhood of facing societal expectations as a girl, to overcoming health challenges through rehabilitation, to building a career in technology as one of few women in the field. She faced obstacles such as unconscious bias but addressed the lack of female representation by starting mentoring programs, writing articles, and creating initiatives to educate more women and girls about opportunities in STEM fields. Her efforts contributed to increasing the percentage of women attending technology conferences and entering technical careers. The author advocates using writing, public speaking, and social media to gain respect and influence as a way for more women to succeed in male-dominated industries.
This presentation illustrates the challenges of learning new skills while working at a high level with your current skills, and how we might balance the two. Presented at TechWell's Agile and DevOps West 2021.
The document discusses key competencies in e-learning. It summarizes that the New Zealand curriculum is proving to be a major influence on how teachers are using information and communication technologies in education. Teachers from ICT professional development clusters met at a conference to share ideas and explore how they are using e-learning to enact the revised curriculum. The curriculum is seen as the key driver of professional development for teachers in how they integrate technology into learning. A variety of e-learning tools and their potential for being efficient or effective for learning are also discussed.
The document discusses how technology has advanced faster than teaching pedagogy and how teachers must evolve their role. It advocates for student-centered learning where students work collaboratively with technology empowering the teacher to mentor. The author believes there will be an "explosion of innovation" in pedagogy in 2012-2013 and teachers need support during this improvement cycle to build both technology and support systems in parallel. A Khan Academy quote is included that says technology allows teaching to evolve and empower teachers to better spend time interacting with students.

Technology has grown tremendously over time. Early technology like the typewriter from 1714 had limitations like lacking backspace, autocorrect, and storage. It required printing files. In contrast, modern technology like MS Word allows backing up, editing, and storing files online without printing. It has helped speed up work and make projects easier. Technology has also advanced entertainment media from silent films to animated cartoons. Overall, technology has helped streamline daily life tasks through online calendars, cell phones, and education apps, making schedules easier to coordinate and share information.

In my career, I've had the chance to observe many different styles of leadership behaviour, and the unique habits of leaders, some of them unexpected.
Talking to people: the forgotten DevOps toolPeter Varhol
This document discusses how conversation has declined as a tool in DevOps due to increased digital communication and a desire for control. It argues that face-to-face conversation is important for DevOps work because it allows for spontaneity, unexpected ideas, trust-building and practice in communication. The document provides suggestions for incorporating more conversation, such as designing shared work spaces, limiting digital distraction during meetings, bringing dispersed teams together occasionally, and using chatbots to facilitate both communication and tasks.
The digital divide refers to the gap between those who have access to computers and the Internet versus those who do not, as well as the gap between those who are computer literate and those who are not. The digital divide creates disparities in society's ability to teach people equally and effectively. While connectivity does not necessarily mean productivity, studies show that students from lower-income families who rely on smartphones for Internet access are less likely to complete writing assignments. However, lack of connectivity has not beaten creativity, as students have still created presentations using smartphone apps. The digital divide is an expression of differences in levels of connectivity, but it is not an indicator of intelligence, creativity, or dedication to education.
While Beyoncé may answer this question with a loud, enthusiastic “GIRLS”, let’s be real: the people in technology are making this world go around. And in STEM careers and STEM majors, the gender gap is still clearly in effect. In this talk, a recent high school graduate and Girls in Tech leader will offer a fresh perspective about the disconnect between girls and careers in technology, despite the ongoing efforts by many to close this gap. We'll get real about why we still aren’t seeing enough girls pursue these careers, why it’s still important to change this, and how we can all become better allies (or “STEMinists”) to help fix the issue.
Attracting & Retaining Top Talent: Millennials In the WorkplaceMcKonly & Asbury, LLP
This webinar will be hosted by McKonly & Asbury Human Resources Director, Suzanne Sentman, and Human Resources Coordinator, Holly Kressler.
Millennials, the cohort of Americans born between 1980 and the mid-2000s, now surpass Baby Boomers as the largest living U.S. generation. In 2013, they represented one-third of the total U.S population and by 2020, they are expected to make up half of the workforce. How are employers responding to this employee population shift?
This webinar will explore the defining characteristics of the Millennial generation and how companies can utilize this information to successfully attract, recruit, and retain these employees. As employers create a culture that supports this generation’s need and desire for career growth and advancement, best practices will be examined in areas such as recruiting, onboarding, training, and performance management.

It discusses how traditional IT models are not designed for today's business needs and how DevOps can help through improved communication, collaboration, and integration between development and operations. DevOps allows for more frequent releases, improved quality, and better cooperation compared to traditional models. The document provides an overview of DevOps benefits and describes how DevOps is not just about automation or increased deployments but enabling continuous improvement and efficient delivery of production-ready code.
Application monitoring is being talked about a lot these days and it helps provide key information that is helpful in developing better software and also in taking some key business decision. Datadog offers monitoring as a service.
Continuous Testing using Shippable and DockerMukta Aphale
While setting up continuous delivery for your product, one of the biggest challenge is to implement continuous testing. We are gradually moving away from manual testing to automation. But how do we integrate the automated tests into your system? How to run integration tests everyday considering that the test environment can get polluted with failed tests? Docker is a type of a virtualisation platform, a container. Shippable is a hosted cloud platform that provides hosted continuous integration, deployment, and testing to GitHub and Bitbucket repositories.
The document discusses how concepts from manufacturing such as car assembly lines and testing can be applied to software development using DevOps. It provides an overview of fundamental DevOps concepts like version control, continuous integration, continuous delivery, configuration management, artifact management, monitoring and how automating these can help build software more efficiently similar to how manufacturing uses automation. It also outlines an assignment to set up a basic CI/CD pipeline from source code to deployment to get hands-on experience with DevOps tools and processes.
The document discusses using Docker and configuration management tools like Ansible and Chef together. It provides examples of building Docker images from code using tools like SBT and Maven. It also describes using Ansible playbooks and Chef recipes to automate pulling, running and managing Docker containers. Configuration files and credentials can be handled securely. Overall, the document shows how Docker and configuration management can be integrated to provide an automated and flexible deployment pipeline.
Mukta Aphale presented at ChefConf 2015. She discussed her background transitioning from developer to DevOps architect. She contributed to Chef development and created several Chef knife plugins. Aphale also discussed using Docker and Chef together to automate container management and deployment. She showed how to build a Docker image using Chef recipes and push it to a registry for deployment using Chef push jobs.

Impact of Effective Performance Appraisal Systems on Employee Motivation and ...Dr. Nazrul Islam
Healthy economic development requires properly managing the banking industry of any
country. Along with state-owned banks, private banks play a critical role in the country's economy.
Managers in all types of banks now confront the same challenge: how to get the utmost output from
their employees. Therefore, Performance appraisal appears to be inevitable since it set the
standard for comparing actual performance to established objectives and recommending practical
solutions that help the organization achieve sustainable growth. Therefore, the purpose of this
research is to determine the effect of performance appraisal on employee motivation and retention.

17. Moral of the Story
• Girls are born with the quality to question
stereotypes
• Boys take time to adapt to the "pink things"
• I had to be a mother to realize this!
• We set an example for our kids
• We can change our kid's perception of the
Pinks and Blues!
27. You can manage Infra;
And you can manage Life!

28. And I Repeat...
• Motherhood and DevOps are NOT disjoint sets
• Do not give up your passion for your kids
• Do not give up kids for your passion
• "Efficiently" working mothers set a better example for their kids
• Being a mother grooms and teaches you in may ways
• DevOps teaches you many things too
• What you learn as a mother can be applied in DevOps
• What you learn in DevOps can be applied to MomOps
(smile) - Yeah, this is not a feminist talk. This is simply to share my experiences trying to bridge motherhood with technology!
Let me start by introducing myself
I would like to share my experiments with Dockeer. As you see, I have worked on projects that involved working with Docker for testing, for dev env setup, to run tools and services and also in production.
For testing, I performed a POC that used shippable with docker for headless selenium tests for nightly builds.
We tried to setup dev env inside docker, so that any developer could run the container and access his workspace with all the needed setups already done on it.
We ran services like chef, ansible tower and other services as docker containers
The best experience was in setting up a prod like env and trying to run our product as docker container. It was success, the product is not yet live its still in the development stage.
I am an ordinary woman, who is privileged to get a chance to talk at the docker con! I believe docker is the future of devops. And its really my pleasure that I have got a chance to talk here!
I love technology, i am in love with devops, with docker. I also love my kids and I love being a mother. And I wish to share my experiences of being a MomOps in the DevOps world!
A quick glance at the technology jobs in tech companies shows that women workforce is around 18%.
More specifically, at the silicon valley, the numbers are similar, but marginally better at 20%
Technical jobs have a lesser contribution from women.
in devops the contribution of women firther drops
DevOps is a male dominated field.
As per the survey in 2015 by PuppetLabs and also by Devops.com only 4% of the survey respondents were women
13% women in DevOps teams as per the PuppetLabs survey
As per the DevOps Salary Survey conducted by devops.com, Women get 26% salary less than their men counterparts
Oh yeah, we can do it. But why so poor numbers?
I think thats because most of the women get married, have kids and think thats it - Their primary purpose in life is just to run their house. So they tend to give up their jobs in technology, or they prefer to not work in a dynamic technology world of DevOps.
Here's why women prefer to stay away from devops.
But look at the reasons closely - they are reason enough to fall in love with DevOps!
Its not routine work - hence its always interesting!
Learning curve - yes, but you get to learn. You are encouraged to learn and contribute to DevOps!
No, there are no shifts - but there is a possibility to work 100% remotely in DevOps! So if you think working from home can help you balance your home & office, come, contribute to DevOps!
We are running short of DevOps engineers. Women make 50% of the population, and women can contribute!
Women can bring in diverse ideas. Its been proved that women impact the eCommerce field largely and are the largest economic force in the world.
Also bringing in more women to DevOps and Technology NOW can set an example for your daughters and sons as well, so that the little girls today can contribute more to STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths.
Mothers are mature women! And mothers in DevOps can help you grow and better perform as a company!
Mothers can multitask - they get so trained in multitasking with kids around, that they can be a great asset for your office work too!
Mothers can store lots of data - they have the ability to gather and work on more facts!
Mothers have a faster memory recovery - they are much more attentive and can find out more bugs and issues with your setup!
Mothers have a higher processing power - they can get more tasks done in less time!
Mothers can be more concerned and reliable and yet they have learnt the odd way to be more emotionally strong!
Men and women's brains are differently wired. After being a mother, she knows and understands those differences much more than before. Women and especially mothers can compliment how men work.Together they can build a more beautiful solution!
I am going to tell you a story. Its a story about my kids.
We have created certain stereotypes. Well dont mean to, but roughly the ones shown in the slide are what the kids believe.
I am sure, like me, none of you teach anything like above to the kids. But they learn from patterns that our society follows...
So kids think, Barbie is for girls. And sports like soccer or cricket are for boys.
One day, My 6 year old son was playing with his friends. They decided they will watch TV. So his female friend, Gargi, switched on the TV and started her favorite program - Barbie! All the boys, including my son, were like - Oh barbie, we are not going to watch barbie! Only girls watch barbie! And they walked out to play something else!
Now, same set of kids were playing cricket on the ground. Gargi too wanted to play, but they told her - hey boys play cricket! You wont be able to play! Gargi fought, cried, complained and finally she played cricket with them!
Thus, we can build a better future for our kids. If you follow your passion for technology, your kids would know that the "stereotype" is - "one should follow his passion!"
So what is stopping us women, in contributing to DevOps?
External factors include society, culture, norms and strereotypes (which we women are born to break!)
But the internal factors are in our hands. I believe your attitude can take you to your dream destination!
In the next few slides I would like to share those internal factors which help me manage motherhood with DevOps...
Introducing Laxmi. Yeah - She makes cane baskets and sells them for a living. She makes just about 1.5 dollars a day. She has 4 kids. She has a lazy and troublesome husband. Yet she is an entrepreneur - a working mother!
One thing we need to learn from her is - Lean In! Give in your best. Beat the odds. If you love DevOps, then come take a deep dive in.
Life is quite a bit of a juggle for us moms. Yes its difficult. But have you tried to give in your best? Looking after kids, groceries, school, homework, tantrums and then "lean in" at office?! Well in a way, when I go to office, I get my personal peaceful time as well! So I prefer going to office and interacting with colleagues. There are many companies that offer work from home, you can opt for that. But as Sheryl Sandberg said - lean in. And lean in - not just in office, but lean in and juggle efficiently between office and home.
You have worked with multi threaded models in DevOps. You need to apply it to your personal life.
Lets talk of a situation which we all face many times... So you have all this happening at the same - You have a very important release in office. Your kid is ill and you need to take him to the doctor. You havent found time to do groceries so you have trouble figuring out what to cook. Your mother calls you up and she needs your help. You friend wants you to run an errand for him. And gradually things start to pile up and it all gets only worse.
What do you choose to do first?
Prioritize! You need to figure out what means the most to you? That would solve half of your problems.
Sometimes its ok to compromise on what you want to do for your kids. You need to let go.
Sometimes you need to make work wait for you.
Notice that the girl trying to climb up is taking help of the ropes and the crevices in the rocks. To move up you need to take help. To give in your best at work , and yet not compromise on bringing up your kids - you need to take help.
Whom to lean on? Your family and friends are the best bet.
I come from a culture where its ok to stay with in laws. I am lucky that my inlaws are very supportive and encouraging. You too can count on your extended family for help. Make good friends - they say - God gave us relatives, thank God we can choose friends! You can form a good friend circle and take turns in helping each other with house and kids related work.
Above all, the most important pillar whom you can rely on is your husband. We do not have a talk on DadOps in DevOps. But I am sure there are many men out there who support and encourage their wives to follow their passion for technology.
This is An automated conveyor system keeps inventory flowing to the loading docks at Dollar Tree's southeast distribution center in Savannah Georgia.
Automation is the DevOps mantra too. The software industry has matured and now we need to automate Ops.
As a mother, your life too has matured into a complex juggle. You need to automate your routine tasks too!
What are the standard daily tasks a mother does? Wake up the kids, get them ready, breakfast, send them to school, go to office and write automation scripts for dev-ops, cook dinner, spend quality time with kids, get the kids to bed. Some of these tasks can be automated. Send them to school by bus if you can. Teach them to get up and get ready quickly by themselves. Take help from friends and family for cooking.
Some tasks should better remain manual - like spending quality time with kids!
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/careers/career-advice/the-networking-gender-gap-and-how-to-bridge-it/article4183138/
http://smallbusinessbc.ca/blog/how-women-network-differently-men/
You need to network. I feel the way men and women network is very different. Men tend to talk more about office and technology when they meet. If they have a question, they come straight to the point.
Women typically network and talk about what problems they face in their day to day life while they try to balance office and home. They like to hear stories of "how do you manage".
Well, since we women are born to break stereotype (just like what i mentioned above)... we can work to network better. We can talk about the woes of handling kids. And we can also talk about technology. Networking in DevOps today is especially important. There are many innovative tools and creative ways to tackle every problem here. So you need to network, talk, discuss and keep yourself updated.
Most women lack self confidence. Women are taught to be modest and this kind of interferes in their confidence.
After being a mother I feel I have become more confident. I dont care much about what others will say? At the end of the day when I see those 2 pairs of happy eyes, the world seems like a beautiful place!
Being a mother has taught me that its ok to advertise and market yourself at times.
While you are treading this path and rapidly progressing, you need to slow down once in a while and evaluate if you are doing it right - are you happy doing what you want? Do you need to make any changes to your life's project plan? Follow the agile methodology and keep connecting with yourself by giving yourself timely feedbacks! Appraise your progress. Invest in continuous improvement! You need to ensure you are continuously improving the quality of your life, improving the quality time your spend with your kids and improving on the efforts you put at work!
