Machine Learning for Kids puts IBM’s AI technologies in the hands of children so they can learn about AI by playing, experimenting and making with them. It was created as a volunteer activity, initially for Dale’s own use, but this was incrementally scaled - with a variety of approaches used to enable and encourage use by both IBM locations and schools around the world.
This presentation describes some of the lessons learned doing this. It describes how you could increase the impact of the volunteer work that you do and ways to turn something that you do in a single local school into something that can be used around the world.
Increasing girls participation in stem sydney june 2016
This document discusses ways to increase girls' participation in STEM fields. It recommends promoting atypical role models of both men and women in information and communication technology fields. It also suggests being conscious of unconscious gender biases in teaching practices and curriculum that can negatively impact girls' performance through stereotype threat. Continuity in software development is all about shortening cycle times. For example, continuous integration shortens the time to integrating changes from multiple developers and continuous delivery shortens the time to get those integrated changes into the hands of users. Although it is now possible to get multiple new versions of complex software systems released per day, it still often takes years, if ever, to get software engineering research results into use by software development teams. What would software engineering research and software engineering development look like if we could shorten the cycle time from taking a research result into practice? What can we learn from how continuity in development is performed to make it possible to achieve continuous adoption of research results? Do we even want to achieve continuous adoption? In this talk, I will explore these questions, drawing from experiences I have gained in helping to take a research idea to market and from insights learned from interviewing industry leaders.

Some people insist that machines will replace humans in many different ways; others disagree, but without explaining why. You could say a smartphone app replaces an admin assistant by managing your schedule. However, to make the app work, you must modify your usual behavior by providing input in a formal, explicit way, and then interpreting and correcting its output to make up for the app's inflexibility. But storing, transforming, and displaying data are only part of the picture. Truly managing your schedule means making decisions about values, politics, and social concerns, and that requires tacit knowledge internal to you and not easily transmitted to machines. Michael Bolton describes how great testing depends not only on requirements but also on people's ideas, experience, and social interplay. Machines may accelerate or extend some human actions, but machines do not have access to people's tacit knowledge. And without that, important things get lost. Michael describes the implications for testing—and for the products that drive us crazy.

iCode is a program run by iBridge hub that aims to teach computer programming skills to children, youths, educators, and parents in the community. It offers coding courses at iBridge hub, in schools through after-school programs and clubs, and online for individuals to learn at home. The goal is for coding to become a core subject in education and to make programming more accessible and seen as an essential 21st century skill. iCode uses a three month curriculum that introduces programming concepts and then teaches different languages appropriate for different age groups. It provides computers and resources at its hub and online for individuals to learn and practice coding.

Who Run The World?
While Beyoncé may answer this question with a loud, enthusiastic “GIRLS”, let’s be real: the people in technology are making this world go around. And in STEM careers and STEM majors, the gender gap is still clearly in effect. In this talk, a recent high school graduate and Girls in Tech leader will offer a fresh perspective about the disconnect between girls and careers in technology, despite the ongoing efforts by many to close this gap. We'll get real about why we still aren’t seeing enough girls pursue these careers, why it’s still important to change this, and how we can all become better allies (or “STEMinists”) to help fix the issue.
Lynne Parker - Engaging Women in Robotics
This panel discussion focused on engaging more women in robotics. The panelists discussed current statistics on female representation in robotics fields and brainstormed questions about how to better recruit and retain women. They shared some efforts that have been made, such as outreach programs and special scholarships, but noted the need for more evaluation of their impact. The panel proposed that increasing advocacy from male colleagues could help address issues like unconscious bias facing women in STEM.
COULD THE NEXT GOOGLE COME FROM LATIN AMERICA?
This document discusses the possibility of the next major tech company coming from Latin America. The cultural heritage sector plays an important role in our society, primarily because it has the responsibility to collect and preserve both artifacts and knowledge from the past in order to share them in the present and maintain them for the benefit of future generations.
Nearly all cultural heritage organizations operate as nonprofits, with specific mandates and very tight budgets. With those constraints in place, the sector must still find a way to compete for the same customers as all other consumer-oriented businesses - in that light, leveraging digital content offers a strong potential path to success.
In order to attract and engage 21st century audiences and contributors, cultural heritage organizations have become digital publishers, creating and providing access to meaningful content on a scale that was never anticipated. While most have become adept at producing digital content, the sector has been playing catch up when it comes to organizing, cataloging and sharing that content.
This session will look at how cultural organizations can achieve mission-focused success and competitive advantage by adopting best practices in digital asset management and digital curation. In addition, we will examine the formal responsibility and challenge for nonprofit/cultural heritage organizations to ensure long-term preservation and provide access to digital assets in perpetuity.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
