This document provides guidance and outlines the process for students completing their professional inquiry (PI) for Module 3 of the BAPP Arts program. It discusses defining a PI, the stages and steps involved, developing inquiry questions, conducting research and practitioner research, reviewing literature, addressing ethical considerations, and completing the critical review, professional artefact, and oral presentation which make up the final assessment. Key points covered include identifying goals and questions for the inquiry, proceeding after receiving feedback, conducting practitioner research ethically, reviewing literature sources, developing an action plan, and important submission dates. The session aims to help students understand the PI process and feel prepared to make progress on their projects over the coming weeks and months.

Share Your Action Research Study
Action research is a form of inquiry in which a problem is identified and a series of actions are planned as a way of gaining deeper understanding of the range of possible solutions. The purpose of this discussion is to promote reciprocal sharing of your final action research report with others in your community of practice (your peers in this course) who would value the knowledge you have gained through the action research process. In this discussion, you will create a presentation using the software of your choice (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Docs, Present.me, YouTube, Prezi, Jing, SlideRocket, or another program) to present your findings to your school at an after school staff meeting. Include speaker notes if using PowerPoint. If using a program other than PowerPoint, submit a document with speaker notes included for each slide.
There are two parts to this discussion.
Part 1:
Share the process and results of the action research planned in EDU671 and conducted in EDU675. At a minimum:
Describe the purpose of your study by writing a statement that completes the following sentence, “The purpose of this study is to…” (two to three sentences).
Post your research question(s) - Include definitions of key technical terms, if necessary. (one to three sentences)
Outcomes/Results The “so what?” of your study—Answers to your research questions. (three to four sentences)
Assuming you would conduct another cycle of this study, what specific modifications or adjustments would you make, and why? (three to four sentences)
Explain why this study is important to the school and the students. ( two to three sentences)
Explain why this study is important it is important for teachers and other educational practitioners to become researchers of their own practice. (two to three sentences)

In one paragraph, reflect on your experience with the redesign of the Week Three Assignment in terms of challenges you encountered and how you overcame those challenges. Also include how your assessment promotes learning and innovation skills and how it could be used as a tool for ongoing evaluation of student progress.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The professional inquiry is a learning approach that develops knowledge
and understanding about an arts-related area of practice that is
contextualised by your experience.
The inquiry uses steps and stages to allow inquiry questions to evolve
responses or solutions & develop valuable expertise in particular subject
areas. It informs your thinking using your experience, appropriate
literature and data from practitioner research; the process allows you to
think about the meaning of what you do.
The critical review explains what you have done in more formal terms.
The professional artefact demonstrates that you can communicate your
new knowledge within your professional setting.
The inquiry involves professional and personal dimensions that are
reflexive. There is a progression in the ability to think through issues and
problems using analysis and interpretation, academic argument
(convincing someone of your point of view using evidence) and critical
reflection.

9. To review your plan for your professional inquiry -
look at feedback from your Module 2 plan and
discuss with your tutor and peers

Week 1: Task for 7a
After looking at your adviser feedback from Module 2 -
students send a 1 page summary to your tutor/adviser
with your inquiry title, your research/inquiry questions
and ideas, ethical issues, literature review up to this
point, changes to your plan, ideas for your artefact, and
any questions or issues that might have arisen for the
module after reading the Module 3 Handbook.

your thinking
Reviewing your plan… talk with someone over Skype or
phone to pinpoint what you need to do… tell this to your
partner and they write it down for you…

1) Your topic area & inquiry questions
2) Ethical issues that are involved in the inquiry
3) What you have done so far in terms of researching
literature
4) What you have done so far in terms of gathering data
5) Have your partner write this down for you and give/send
it to you – it is a great way to get started and to clarify
what your are doing.

14. Follow the process form your Ethics Release Form agreed with
your tutor – and any additional conditions sent by the university.
Your tutor will work closely with your to monitor your ethics. Keep in
touch with them.
Use the BAPP Arts informed consent form provided.
You can check your invitation to participant and information
sheet (sometimes sent as an email or posted online) used to invite
and inform participants before the practitioner research with your
tutor before you send these out (if you have any questions).

15. Literature and Research Literature
It is now time to be looking for more literature about your topic to
find expertise and ideas to inform your thinking.
Within the library on MyUnihub you can use Summon, the Library
Guides, go directly to ebooks and journals. Remember that

You have a Reading list on the My Learning WBS3760 site and
the library for what we call research literature – so books etc. that
talk about how to do the practitioner research e.g Bell, Costley et al.
Blaxter Huges and Tight, Fox et al., Gray etc.

16. Reviewing the
Ideas/Literature
The review of ‘literature’ for the inquiry is more comprehensive than
Module 2 - which showed you how to find and review individual pieces
of literature – look at Reader 7.
Continue to accumulate sources that will inform your thinking
throughout the inquiry – discuss with your tutor and peers.

help you find academic sources as well as Google and Google
Scholar (books, audiovisual, audio sources).

There is information about reviewing literature in Reader 7 – it will become
summarised in your Critical Review but you can also do a fuller review and put
into your appendices.

Remember resources are available under the Reading List
Your literature should come from the areas that you are finding out about
for your research and work-based activities and should show the
expertise in the various fields (disciplinary) or workplace
(transdisciplinary) where you are focusing your inquiry.
