NATURE OF INQUIRY
AND RESEARCH

LESSON 4
The Kinds of Research Across
Fields
REVIEW
Quantitative research is a
type of educational research in
which the researcher decides
what to study; asks specific,
narrow questions; collects
quantifiable data from
participants; analyzes these
numbers using.

REVIEW
Qualitative research is a type of
educational research in which the
researcher relies on the views of
participants; asks broad, general
questions; collects data consisting
largely words (text) from participants;
describes and analyzes these words
for themes; and conducts the inquiry
in a subjective, biased manner.

WHY DO RESEARCH???
The writing process will make
you confident in your ability to find
information and present it effectively
in varied ways. It may be on:
1. A report in Nail Care Services
2. A paper on the History of
Beauty Care
3. An archeological field paper
on the burial practices of the early
Filipinos.
5
Practical Research 1
What is Field Research?
Field Research is defined
as qualitative method of data
collection that aims to
observe, interact and
understand people while they
are in natural environment.

9
Practical Research 1
Direct Observation
In this method, the data is
collected via an observational
method or subjects in a natural
environment. This method of field
research is widely used in a
public setting or environment but
not in a private environment as it
raises an ethical dilemma.
10
Practical Research 1
Participant Observation
In this method, the researcher is
deeply involved in the research
process, not just purely as an
observer, but also a participant. In
this method, researchers live in a
comfortable environment with the
participants of the research, to make
them comfortable and open up to in-
depth discussions.
11
Practical Research 1
Ethnography
Ethnography is an expended
observation of social research and
social perspective and the cultural
values of an entire social setting. The
entire communities are observed
objectively.
12
Practical Research 1
Qualitative Interviews
It is a closed-ended questions
that are asked directly to the
research subjects. It could be
informal and conversational, semi
structured, standardized and open-
ended or a mix of all the above three.
13
Practical Research 1
Case Study
It is in-depth analysis of a
person, situation or event. This
method may look difficult to operate;
however, it is one of the simplest
ways of conducting research as it
involves a deep dive and thorough
understanding the data collection
methods and inferring data.
14
Practical Research 1
Some examples of field research
1. Marshmallow Experiment
2. Fast Talk with Isko Moreno
3. Kulot
4. Unearthed “Kutkot”
15
Practical Research 1
Some examples of field research in
Beauty Care
1. A Study of Factors Affecting on
Men’s Skin Care Products
2. The Beauty Industry’s Influence
on Women in Society
3. A Study of the Possible Harmful
Effects of Cosmetic Beauty
Products on Human Health

Let’s be a researcher!
Mode of Communication: Group
Activity
Time: 7 Minutes (5 minutes Discussion
and 2 minutes presentation)
Question:
What are the Possible Harmful Effects
of Cosmetic Beauty Products on
Human Health?
WHY DO RESEARCH???
“Give me a fish and I eat today.
Teach me how to fish and I will
eat for a lifetime.”
17
Practical Research 1
You need to learn application
skills. This means you need to
engage personally in what they
are doing.
To become competent
researchers, you need to gain an
understanding of the various
stages of the research process.

Collaborative Work
1. Identify two researchers in an area of
interest (arts, humanities, sports, science,
business, agriculture and fisheries,
information and communication technology,
and social inquiry).
2. Differentiate the researches by identifying
their similarities and differences.
3. Present your output using PowerPoint
presentation. Ask someone in your group to
present your output
THANK YOU!
