INTRODUCTION
 The term automation, inspired by the earlier word Automatic refers to the use of computers and
other automated machinery for the execution of tasks. Automated machinery may range from simple
sensing devices to robots and other sophisticated equipment. Automation of operations may
encompass the automation of a single operation or the automation of an entire factory.
 The dictionary defines Automation as the technique of making an apparatus, a process, or a system
operate automatically. We define automation as the creation and application of technology to
monitor and control the production and delivery of products and services.
 The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor, however, it is also used to save energy and
materials and to improve quality, accuracy and precision. Efficiency and better productivity can be
considered to be the major outcome of automation.
 Automation has been achieved by various means including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic,
electrical, electronic and computers, usually in combination. Complicated systems, such as modern
factories, airplanes and ships typically use all these combined techniques.
AUTOMATION TYPES
 Open and Closed Loop
All the elements constituting the measurement and control of a single variable are
called a control loop. Control that uses a measured signal, feeds the signal back and
compares it to a set point, calculates and sends a return signal to make a correction
is called closed loop control. If the controller does not incorporate feedback to
make a correction then it is open loop. Loop control is normally accomplished with
a controller.
 Sequential control and logical sequence
Sequential control may be either to a fixed sequence or to a logical one that will perform
different actions depending on various system states. An example of an adjustable but
otherwise fixed sequence is a timer on a lawn sprinkler.
States refer to the various conditions that can occur in a use or sequence scenario of the
system. An example is an elevator, which uses logic based on the system state to perform
certain actions in response to its state and operator input.
TRENDS(Current and Future)
 Internet of Things
A proposed development of the Internet in which
everyday objects have network connectivity, allowing
them to send and receive data.
Benefits-
• Managing everything from anywhere.
• Reducing complexity and hardware costs with one
network technology.
• Moving control and information at will.
• Expanding it all easily.
 Big Data
Big data is a buzzword, or catch-phrase, used to
describe a massive volume of both structured and
unstructured data that is so large that it's difficult
to process using traditional database and software
techniques.
Benefits-
• Cost reduction
• Faster, better decision making
• New products and services
 Cloud Computing
The practice of using a network of remote servers
hosted on the Internet to store, manage, and process
data, rather than a local server or a personal
computer.
Benefits-
• Reduce spending on technology infrastructure.
• Improve accessibility.
• Improve flexibility
 Robotics
The branch of technology that deals with the design,
construction, operation, and application of robots.
Benefits-
 Increase In Production.
 Operating In Unsafe Surroundings.
 Improvement In Quality
INTEREST AREAS
Technology is a big part of my world, there isn't a day where it doesn't touch my life. In the industry
when a new technology becomes commercially available and steamrolls in - you have to be on the
steamroller otherwise you are part of the road. I keep working on every new technologies I come
across. My interest in automation includes the IT Automation and Robotics(Designing Algorithms for
Robot Controlling). Being a tech enthusiast I have keen interest in the area of artificial intelligence
and robotics, I have been studying about the algorithms for Big data analysis , computer vision and
Natural Language Processing since few months. I have thought of a project which includes the
technologies like computer vision and robotics and a system for analyzing the customer trends to
increase overall production of organization.
I feel that Mphasis Group places prominence in similar areas and having the privilege of serving as an
intern with you, will give a further exposure that I need to advance my career.
With the right options and experiences to the cutting edge projects and designs, I believe that I can
achieve this goal.
If given an opportunity to work with your esteemed organization I would like to work on the field of
IT Automation and Robotics.
