Setting and Props
• A setting is an important visual aspect of a film, they can be used naturally in existing locations or artificially created either
on set or in said location. There are multiple types of setting types, these include
• Interior
• Exterior
• Location
• Natural
And those are just a select few of possible settings. Sets can also be created entirely from scratch to create fictional locations and
/or buildings, arenas and continents.
Props are an important aspect for any production, Like the setting they help create and manipulate the scene in a variety of ways.
Multiple methods include
• Objects
• Foreground
• Background
• Key
And these are just a handful of the possible methods used.
Lighting and Color
These can be used to set the mood for the production. Light can also determine the mood and emotions of a certain character.
Below is an still image from the film Resident Evil Apocalypse, The sky is dark and foggy with very dim lighting to create a spooky
scene as nemesis approaches. The creature itself is very shadow like and can hardly be seen due to the fog.
Dark skies and dim/foggy areas are usually used to created to form an dark and menacing setting. While bright lights and blue
skies indicate a calm and peaceful setting.
Costume hair and Makeup
• Depending on the film in production multiple costumes are created and multiple makeup types are used.
For horror type films you many find false wounds and fake blood are used, along with tattered clothing and ghostly white face
makeup to create a visually horrifying experience. Masks may also be used to portray killers or monsters. Below is an example of a
mask being used in the Film Halloween.
Facial expressions and Body language
These are often used to portray a character’s mood and /or emotions. Below are screenshots from the film Scarface they show a
mixture of multiple expressions and moods.
To the left is Scarface smiling in the usual happy mood, And on the right He looks furious.
Positioning and space
It’s important for all cameras and actors to be in the right place at the right time and to ensure there’s enough space for each
shot. Positioning is crucial to all shots in a film, all props must correctly be in place.
