This document discusses ideas for creating a movie poster and magazine cover to promote a film. For the movie poster, the author considers using a single background color and photos from the film. They choose the second idea of using photos, feeling it will catch attention and show parts of the comedy-drama story. For the magazine cover, the first idea uses photos of the actors to draw fans, while the second uses characters. The author selects the first idea, thinking teenage girls - the target audience - will respond more to the actors. In both cases, the author analyzes font, color schemes, and character placement to best represent the film.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Idea 1;
Film Poster
Background-
I like the idea of having the background
to my film poster similar to the one’s
beneath where they use colours as the
sole background. The background
colour choice in the poster will have to
associate with certain parts of the
actual film for example the background
in the ‘Juno’ poster is similar to the
main characters top and the bright
yellow background for the ‘Little Miss
Sunshine’ poster connects to the title
of the film as yellow is a colour that is
associated with the sun. I also think
that having a minimalistic background
such as these would pair well with my
genre because there would not be
chance that the comical side or
dramatic side will show more than the
other.
My film-
I would choose a colour that has
relevance to the the storyline. Blue for
example as it would reflect the
depression of the main character.
However it would have to be a shade
that can also be seen as happy because
the end of my story will show hope and
progress for her.
Title-
Placement of the title in the poster
needs to be right, it needs to coincide
with the picture/background and the
rest of the text. Also the style of the
text is important as it creates and
impact on the viewer.
My film-
I would use text that is in the style of ‘the ugly truth’
and ‘that awkward moment’. I like these titles because
it separates the words and creates emphasis for the
audience. The title will be placed at the
top of the poster, this is so that it
will be the first thing my target
audience will notice. It would
also place nicely against the
background and characters.
Character placement-
In the posters below the main characters are placed at the bottom of the
page. The title is an important part of the poster and film overall so
allowing space for it is essential. Having the main characters as part of
the poster will help interest the target audience as they would be actors
usually associated with popular comedy/drama films.
My film-
For my film I wouldn’t have the
characters of the brother and sister
placed so low down on the poster, they
would be on the lower portion of the
poster however still in main focus. The
sister will be leaning her head on the
brothers shoulders to show he’s her
support.
3. Idea 2;
Film Poster
Objective-
The use of photographs in the examples below is and
interesting and fresh way to show a certain amount of
information from the storyline to interest people to
watch the film.
My film-
An idea for my film using this styles is having the two
main characters sitting in the train station or on their
sofa as it has relevance to my storyline, there would be
just over half of the poster taken up by a wall and on the
wall I will PhotoShop in photographs of key moments in
the film. I really like this idea as it allows people viewing
the poster to see interesting parts of the film that will
intrigue them and make them want to watch the full
film.
Title-
For this poster idea I think that using a font that looks similar to writing will work well. I like the
‘paper towns’ writing because it doesn’t look stable which is similar to my main character as she’s
unstable with her eating disorder. I also think that it will relate to my character and my target
audience. My film-
I will use the font that looks as if someone has written it, my target
audience are young and still in school or college so they can relate to the
stress of the characters that will be shown in the writing.
Character placing-
The placement of the characters in the poster is
key and needs to intrigue the target audience into
wanting to watch the film.
My film-
I will be placing the characters at the bottom on
the poster similar to the poster below however
they will stretch across the full length of the
poster. I either want them to be in a location that
I will be shooting on during the film for example
the train station or on their sofa. I feel
that this would work nicely because
the train station shows the adventure
aspect of the film, where as the sofa
setting will show the part where they
are getting told off and make the
audience wonder why they are in
trouble. I would place them on the
bottom half of the poster as above them
will be photos of their journey also
showing the viewer some of the storyline.
4. Which I have chosen and why…
I have chosen to create a movie poster in style of idea 2, this is because;
• The use of different images is much more eye catching and will interest my target
audience by showing them little parts of the film that appeals to them.
• Since I have chosen the hybrid genre of comedy-drama the front cover will need to
convey both genre aspects. I feel that the main image along with using smaller
shots will show the different emotions that are going to be happening throughout
the film, which will overall show comedy and drama.
• Journey is a main theme in my film which will also be portrayed by the second idea
rather than the simplistic style of the first idea.
• Idea 1 would be easier to create than idea 2 however I feel that the effect and
connection with the film would not work as well as idea 2.
5. Idea 1;
Magazine
Front Cover
Image-
In the magazine covers below they have the actors as
themselves as the main focus to advertise the film. This
works in a way because fans of the actors will want to
hear about the actors more than the film however the
main theme of the article being the film. This is more
commonly seen on gossip magazines.
My cover-
I don’t really see this type of magazine cover working in
way that helps my film. However if I were to use this style
I would have my actors being playful in a sibling kind of
way but as themselves instead of their characters.
Title-
In these magazines the title has been placed behind the main
background image is nice as it makes the celebrity stand out more,
which is a good thing as it will draw that celebrities fans in to buy
the magazine.
My cover-
I think that this would work well on the magazine cover because it
will give the cover different levels. Even though some of the title
might be covered slightly enough of it will be in view so
its still readable. Personally this would attract me
to the magazine because I would like the actor/
actress.
Colour scheme-
The magazine “GQ” changes its colour scheme with
different cover people. The same colour is weaved
throughout the text and other certain aspects of the
cover and the rest of the text on the cover is in black or
another plain colour.
My cover-
This is a positive idea for my front cover as teenage
target audience will react well with a burst of bright
colour, specifically when they think its special to the
cover person.
6. Idea 2;
Magazine
Front Cover
Image-
This magazine that is specifically about film is a very good
example of using characters for the main image. Using the
character rather than the actor appeals to people who will
already have seen the film or know about the film.
My cover-
I like the use of the character and think that it is good for
appealing to the imagination. It connects more to the
promotion of the film as it is a direct reference to the main
characters of plot line. The whole image will have to link to
film and make sense to the characters and story. I think this
would be a good idea for a target audience who are more
interested in films than the actors.
Title-
With this type of film poster I
think that the title works both in
front of the image and behind, however the
Image will be the first thing that is noticed
due to the characteristics so the title will
have to compliment that aspect.
My cover-
For this type of cover I think that I would
place the title behind the image because I
feel that it will attract my audience into
buying it more because of the characters
not because of what magazine it is.
Colour scheme-
In a lot of magazine that are similar to the ones to the right the title
and text on the cover are directly linked to the character or film that is
on the cover. The joker cover is a good example: they’ve used a green
outline on the title and green is a colour that is famously the jokers
colours.
My cover-
I will use a specific colour scheme that has some link to the film
because I feel that it would not only look better with the image but it
will have more of a connection over all.
7. Which I have chosen and why…
I have decided to create a magazine cover in the style of the first idea, this is because;
• My target audience is young teenage girls and they will react more to buying the
magazine because of the actor on the front cover rather than the film itself even
though the main subject of the article is the film .
• I also think that designing a cover like idea 2 will speak to wider audience as gossip
magazines are more popular compared to specific film magazines.
• Also I feel that I will be able to create a better cover in this style that looks
professional and compliments the film.
